hey guys just letting you know that if you are interested in making music for your game and don't know where to start I can suggest using MuLab, which is a completely free program that I came across just recently. As someone who is planning on writing all the music for his game (and doing everything else as well) I can recommend it.

Got some more work done on the weapons system yesterday. By finding different chips for your blaster, you can affect the fire rate, number of projectiles, damage, and effects, which also affects how fast the blaster will overheat, and how quickly its able to mitigate heat.

These chips will be randomly generated as you open crates, and different brands will perform differently, such as Rojier Arms chips are mostly balanced, whereas Smuggler chips will do more damage but overheat pretty fast.

He posts somewhat infrequently, usually when he adds a new feature. I'm not sure if it's because he's busy with non-dev stuff or he's just slow at progress, but these updates are very spaced apart.

Added a unit that can steal enemy units.

This will be interesting to balance. This unit has more parameters to balance than any of the others:
>move speed
>maximum size
>minimum size to cast its capture
>range of capture ability
>cost to cast capture
>restrictions on size of captured unit
>can you used the captured unit this turn, or wait?

Currently it takes about 3 turns to get set up and into position. I'm balancing for solo play where the AI gets many more units, not PvP, so I could afford to make this unit very powerful. Mind control units feel fun, when they're not used against you.

I'm very wary about adding lag units (called Clog iirc), especially the one that stops it completely. With a combination of Bit-Mans and Clog, you could make a 2 wide tunnel and kill enemies one at a time.

Turbo and Fiddle were OP when combined with the Bug units, since your could make a Bug with 10 speed and 30 health (20 was not the max, only what they gave to Sumo) if you had enough time and a protected space, which Lag and Bit-Man buy you.

Giving the AI some equivalent to Bit-Man mitigates this, of course. I'll probably still add Clog and Tuurbo, but nerf them.

Sumo is definitely going in, it's simply a variation on the basic move-attack unit with extreme parameters. I might give it an ultimate if it has over 16 segments too.

The devs of the original knew all that too, and still left in a strategy that easily beats 90% of their levels. Obviously they were aiming only at a casual market. I want to build a system that doesn't have any degenerate strategies like that, and still feel like you are exploiting the AI.

Yeah, I might have made a mistake when I made the player be the defender. Turn limits are no viable in the current game.mode, where the goal is to survive

I like what XCOM did in EW, where the alien DNA stuff that expires. No overall turn limit, but two small ones. I could add captures that give you a bonus unit, at places far from the center of the map.

I agree with this part of your post even though I really love Dark Souls. The first encounter with the dragon where he burns the bridge is a good example. It reminded me of a shitty flash game or IWTBTG where something comes out of nowhere to kill you.
No one can argue that the Bed of Chaos fight is good either. Mindnumbingly easy until you get to the 'platforming section' and it's like an 70/30 tossup whether you will actually make it.
On that note, the Anor Londo archers, I know they're an epic meme, but it's just fucking terrible design.

The current arcarde mode, where you defend an orb in the middle. I'm thinking that each unit is unlocked during gameplay, and the AI gets each new unit first. Once you kill one of a unit type, you can start spawning it.

One where the roles are reversed, and you try to advance. I think that one will happen in a long tunnel, with maybe disappearing terrain bhind you? That way you have incentive to proceed.

Nightfall style missions where you select a team of units, or are given a fixed set of units. The enemies and their locations are always the same. I;m just now realizing NIghtfall was really a puzzle game. The goal can be either kill all enemies or capture a point. I can make the puzzles much harder than NIghtfall.

Unity hates pixel art.

This guy's talk covers pixel art and how to fix it some issues.

The set pixel to unit size in ration to the screen should fix the gaps between the points. Pressing V while moving and snapping the top left of the object's square to the next one might help too.

Nice. To add to this feedback. About the hitscan enemies. Around 1:00 there's an enemy that doesn't trigger until you're right around the corner. With a non-hitscan enemy that'd be an interesting interaction. Here it's just as any other interaction. Perfect example of how hitscan enemies can be very uninteresting and limit design when you use them.

I can't decide which direction should I take this to. Be cartoony (the head is basically just a circle with the nose standing out), or realistic (with lips and chin). Nobody is going to sue you for copying publicly available code like say stack-overflow.
If you copy an implementation from say Unreal Engine 4 if you've subscribed and have access to the github that's actually illegal but it's not like anyone is going to know what your source looks like.

If you're solving the same problem then ideally the compiler should compile down to the same byte code anyway.

Well to be honest the only thing that told me it's a girl is the hair. The overall artstyle in those books I'm making my assumptions based of was fairly androgynous so I'm an expert at telling if there's a trap or not. A boy would have the right side kind of eyebrow on the left face. And the chin makes the one on the right far close to a boy. I wouldn't say most recognize it, sorry.

Some progress on my Space Jam entry.
Now NPC ships can chase and attack the player. I'm trying to understand why they don't look at the player while chasing, since I'm using the same logic as when they're patrolling. I already fixed the ship shooting even after exploding.
Also added a "owner" variable to bullets. Haven' implemented it yet, but this will enable ships to know who is shooting them, so if a NPC ship gets shot by another, it will attack it.

Moreover, I changed the way the player ship moves. Now it uses Unity's physics. I don't like it a lot but it works I guess.
Also, clicking the middle mouse button you can insta-brake. This will help with not running into obstacles when you're going fast. To not make it OP, I'll put it behind a cooldown so you can't spam it.

I try to get nicely formed unwraps and spend time getting them cut good for anything that will be very visible.

I get ambient occlusion bakes for most things, it makes the shadows pop better usually.

For most things I use a ton of layers, often using closeups from photos. I'll have different things on different layers and blend them together. the shirt for example is a blend of a few different shirts. And anywhere that looked too plain got a clone-paste of some creases from a part of the picture of the shirt that had more. Added a few things like some burlap texture to the elbows and knees and set it at like 90% transparency so that it just barely shows through.

I'm just merely ok, but try best and trying to stick just to regular textures without adding normals, psec, and occlusion maps (because that would be a ton more work). If you want to go down that path, the results look really good and there are free tools, but it just takes so much fucking time.

Finally got around to integrating new tile model exports (old ones were exported the wrong size by the modeler) for movement. The two slight problems seem to be that the border-edge tiles are slightly darker in transparency than the middle ones, probably because I added two gradients together for the texture, and the second problem is that the grass layer is popping out. Should be easy fixes I hope

So I don't know a better place to ask this so here's my issue.

I made some model in sketchup for a mod, all fine so far. Now, sketchup is shit for textures as far as I know and I have no clue on how to do them there anyhow. So I export the whole thing to blender.

My question now is, how do I properly uv unwrap a complex model so I can get a sensible texture map to work with?

The auto function only does shit and I had no luck with seams so far. Is there some trick to this or is it just really this difficult?

The first thing that;s making me cringe is that everything is in triangles instead of quads. Going to be a bitch and a half to work with. You can auto-convert tris to quads by hitting "CTRL+F". It is probably going to have some glitches, so I'd go over the new topology with a fine tooth comb to unfuck everything.

Then I'd separate the model into multiple models based on every moving part or everything that is going to be a different material from the surroundings.

THEN you can try auto unwrapping for simple pieces, or you can try drawing your unwrap seams.

A summary on Clarent's video, since it's kind of long: There's a ceil bug at 15:08, the mushrooms are dicks, the game is rad, and most important of all, I got lost after gaining air dash (14:00 onwards). Maybe I'm a retard, but I couldn't find where I needed to go.

I tried to do Deeplink as well, but it started crashing in the middle of the game. The issue is definitely on my end, though, because the crashes happened earlier at higher resolutions and when I was recording at the same time. So, sadly, I couldn't get it running correctly. Almost done with the new movement system.

There's now a grid which keeps track of every object's positions, this will be very useful for object culling later on.

It also now compares object weights with the player's strength so you can't push too many objects at the same time.

How do you turn your drawings into usable sprites, anons? If I simply scale down my stuff to some common resolution (64x64, 128x128 etc) it'll be shit, and makes me wonder why I haven't jumped to pixel art right away, since drawing at that resolution is just a hassle. I've tried to search for engines which support SVG, but even if there would be one, that doesn't make any sense, since it'll be rasterized after all. I still would like to avoid pixel art, but I don't know how I could do that. Like how do you create something like pic related?
