>hair receive bullet
This is not for the dev, but for all of you reading this message. Do you think the others are good? Think they are neat? Think they are almost ready for sale?
Think again, motherfuckers. This game here is fucking genius. What, you think it's just some shitposting shit? Just play it. I dare you. It won't take you even a minute to notice how fucking incredible this game is.
Let me give you a spoiler: It will blow your fucking mind.
Great job dev. I'm looking forward to your next masterpiece.

>Zero Quest
This game is great, man. Just great. The graphics are nice, the music is nice, the characters are good and it's even funny. That's hard to achieve.
The QWEASDZXC layout is really hard to get used to, but I think you could fix most of the complaints by just using S as the down key.
The game crashed when I pressed the "End" key. The list of characters didn't update until I restarted the game when the full crew got together. I have no idea of how to use skills without using the mouse.
Also, I'm a fucking scrub so I died really quickly in the Ninja Fort.
Instead of just pressing Space, it would be nice to just press the last key you pressed. Like, if you're attacking up with W, you just need to time your W key instead of spacebar. This way you could even control most actions with only one hand. Really comfy. The problem of this implementation is defending, but you could just press the direction from where the enemy is attacking you? Like if he's on your left just press A. Just some food for thought. Good luck on your game, I really want to see it finished.
>>
>>147977581

>Bokube
The cat told me about one bokube I saw and that I should save but I didn't see any.
Pressing E to rotate never camera never ever works the first time. The camera rotates fine, but never the first time.
Even though I was playing with the fastest settings the game still wasn't at 60fps and some visuals were bugged (probably because of the fastest settings)
Nothing much else to say when Black cat constantly shits on your game and lays down some truths.
I don't know if it's because I dislike the genre or something, but I feel like everything in your game is trying to make me waste time.
Many times you rotate the screen just to find that one camera position that's ideal, you constantly walk through extremely narrow paths and swarms of enemies that can easily kill you and make you start all over again, you have to constantly stop moving to focus on the mouse (trackpad in my case) and get rid of useless shit that even brainless monkeys could do, and you ALWAYS need to go push some pink block that will most certainly put you through even more punishment paths. Nothing lets me just like beat level, always with the whole bureaucratic bullshit.
But then again, that might be just me.

Okay. This is is for me. No more video-games. I just like wanna dev.

Hey... that's actually a really good idea. It even makes defending require (more) skill because you have to react quickly to the direction the enemy is attacking from.

Thanks!

alright, I feel there's some disconnection between the boomerang and roll mechanics. rolling through an enemy feels cool and I wanted to do it all the time, yet the boomerang is a ranged weapon. so you either roll and hit them melee, or you stay away and plink them from a distance

also, being locked in the roll animation for so long feels like absolute shit. I think you should either let the player cancel it or make it shorter/faster

there's more but I don't want to write a book
>>
>>147979965
Its a different beast.

Obviously its easier to get simple art done with pixel art, but I think its easier to get better looking 3D models than really good pixel art.

I'm talking like top tier stuff.

Top tier Pixel art like SNK or Capcom in their prime is insane.

So what I'm saying is that Pixel art has the lowest skill floor and a higher skill cieling, where as 3D models have a higher skill floor and a lower skill cieling.

Makes sense?

It's not though. Both are still art. If you're really garbage at art then 3D models aren't gonna magically be easier to make. Yeah it's a different skill set but not different enough. Also it's much easier to make a game with simple pixel art than it is with 3D models.
And if we're talking about the really high polished stuff; a god-tier 3D model is far more time-consuming to make than a god-tier sprite, but the sprites are more time consuming to animate. So neither has a higher skill ceiling. And professional games have entire teams making art assets anyway.

Got my alpha up for Rocket Xeno. I'm the guy that was occasionally posting about 3D pre-rendered sprites.

If anyone wants to give it a try I'd really appreciate people attempting to run it on android. It works great on all my devices but one whodev can only have so many devices, so I am on the hunt to find if any android versions/models give it the NOPE.

Windows version is included for people who don't give a fuck and just want to play game.

It's probably going to look disgustingly easy once I show you how it's done, but if you're interested I'm releasing a tutorial video on monday (the tutorial will be on drawing and animating this fish).

A games success on AGDG is largely based on pure presentation. Its why a lot of the games getting talked about are the ones that are closest to being finished.

Is it ok to make my main character a tranny if I myself am a tranny?

I really hate the sjw approach of demanding devs make games more 'inclusive' when really they themselves should just make the games they want to see instead.
>>
>>147983687
>for no reason
No him, but RG/PG games get boring because you start to notice the repetition. Ideally, you should never or not until you've sunk hundreds of hours into it. But few people put that time into their game.
>>
>>147983687
I don't mind random elements but having the entire game built around it rubs me the wrong way.

First time I played Dungeon Break I walked into a red skeleton I literally couldn't kill, the second time I got to the exit only seeing 2 enemies.

Last update for this demo day. By popular demand, sound effects and music. The fact that this only took me like two hours shows I really had no excuse to not do it earlier

Sound effects are queued up and sorted by the distance between their originator and the player, with the eight closest sound effects being played

Sound effects that are connected to the player, like the explosion of one of their missiles or a machine gun fired at them, always play at at least a minimum volume regardless of distance to make sure the player always gets appropriate feedback or warnings

Right now the only two effects are explosions for missiles and gunfire for machine guns, but more are soon to come

I don't know if anyone here is still streaming or recording but if you are, I'd appreciate some video feedback

with tank you can focus on much more cinematic / deliberate camera angles because you don't have to worry about sudden camera changes causing confusion.

without tank you need to either make sure camera angles are consistent, or the direction the player is going becomes "locked" when there's a screen transition.

personally I prefer tank.

What do you think of my plot progression?

>Father is a general in the war effort, known for his exceptional cruelty and doing whatever it takes
>Despite their best efforts, they are over run and conquered by the enemy
>Fast forward 7 years
>Son of general establishes a resistance and begings retaking their lands
>Liberated about 3/4ths of the country, but is killed in combat
>Son uses some of his fathers ruthless tactics at times
>Father takes up his sons armor and pretends to be his son and continues to liberate, and lead a campaign against their oppressors
>Father is ideallic of his son and refuses to tarnish the heroic reputation he's built for himself

Concepts of redemption, and legacy will be explored. Once you swap back to the father as the PC the idea of legacy will manifest in that you'll have much stricter objectives like minimaizing losses on your side to reinforce the heroism he feels for his son.

Play progression goes Chapter 1 Father +Defending Country into failure

Chapter 2 Son establishing a a resistance and begings taking back the country only to be killed at the end

Chapter 3 Father taking up sons position, liberating the final parts of his country

Chapter 4 offesnive against the occupiers in their own territory

Thoughts?

I was 13 and had to lie about my age to join a HL1 mod team. I told them I was 18, and skilled at 3d modeling and animation. I bullshitted my way through small tasks until they realized I was good at learning things on the fly (little did they know I was learning EVERYTHING on the fly). I got the miscellaneous job role and started helping a little bit everywhere. Never made a dime from 4 years of working with them, but I learned a fuck load, and got to see how a functional and successful team operated.

That was me since I decompiled the first pass dll and then modified and recompiled it to see the secret lewd outfit.

Basically every Unity dev who doesn't know what they are doing is going to use PlayerPrefs, which is just a fancy wrapper for the registry. There are actually many times where it is appropriate to write to the registry, though in this case it would be better served to be stored in a file that can be copied between computers by a service like Steam. For a demo this is rather excusable though.

Father gets put in exile for his position in the war effort. Part of the sons storyline will be bringing him back and he'll act as an advisor for the beginning of chapter 2.

He puts on his dead sons armor and pretends to be him?

It's more like being an icon of the revolution. He won't be running around giving speeches. But he'll be the subject of propaganda and such It'll also be a closely guarded secret of the party. It's done by the father so that the people in the war effort don't lose morale and continue to fight. It'll be revealed eventually that he's been masquerading as his son probably towards the end of chapter 3 and the beginning of chapter 4.

If you don't understand the armor thing, it's a game about knights and wizards and shit and it's a full face helmet.

I feel like a more interesting story would be if the father dies instead of the son. You could keep the first act with the father fighting a losing battle, albeit being a brilliant and ruthless bastard of a commander.

The second act would be controlling the son who would fight to establish his own country while struggling to bring honor back to his family and legacy by not being like is father, and reining in what others would call his father's influence.

before each mission you could have a flashback with the father giving the son a twisted lesson on warfare of some sort that relates to the current mission.
>>
>>147984283
Now it looks like a real game, the sound effects and the [Warning] sign adds a lot of information for the player. Of course the AC OST helps a lot, but now you do need to find your own music, if you don't have a music bro I would suggest you to find one.
I didn't notice before how the planes jump back to the field when they touch the borders, it's a really good addition since last demo the enemies would just fly beyond the fight zone.
Your game crashes most of the time when I finish a mission (Zero being the only exception), so I guess it must be something with the AI.
After a while there's some visual bug when you move upwards fast enough in which you can see a lot of contrails bleeding to the screen. It's really common so I guess you're already aware of it.
Also, it's nice how the machine-gun has an active role in gameplay. It really needs those graphics, tho.
Level 1 feels good to play, but level 2 has way too many planes, Comona played fully 2 times and was midway the third play when I beat it. Still, it could work if the enemies came in waves, the friend CPU does help a little with them.
I have no idea how to play level 3. The bombs get the lock-on when I'm almost passing through the target so I can't even kill it with one pass. It needs a little more explanation I guess.
The yellows (Level 4) have a really nice difficulty, but the Ofnir-Grabacr squadron (Level 5) is very hard. I couldn't even beat it since the CPU gangs on me with 3 planes at a time (But you can't really complain if the CPU does a good job, can you?)
Lastly, Level 0 is fun but really silly, since the two planes keep spinning around each other.
Zero sounded really strange, though. Did you make the tempo slower or something?

Anyway, good job. See you next Demo.

Oh you guys. And yeah, I'm definitely gonna speed up the walking speed at the very least; it's been bothering me too. When I'm testing the game I always just run everywhere since walking is way too slow. As for attacks and such, especially her basic attack, they're supposed to be slow. I want it to be like the old Classicvanias where you end up using a lot of sub-weapons since the whip's got a pretty good delay.
>>147987628
Yeah, I was having trouble with the colors for the gate and the walls. Thanks for the advice.
>>147987661
Thanks! It's her fairy; in the dream, her guitar is powered by an electric fairy she saves. That's what's gonna happen in the empty room in the demo before the first checkpoint. If I go forward with this image I'll make it clearer that the fairy's next to her.
>>147987643
>>147988402
That was a concern of mine too. I mean, right now I've only got the beach level so it's not really a good metric of how the rest of the game will turn out, since the beach level's supposed to be a mellow start. But things will get less cute and more adventure-y as the game goes on so hopefully it'll fit better. I might make another sketch in a more cute direction too though

Thanks for the detailed feedback, it really helps

I guess an OST is something I actually have to think about now. Because I'm an absolute madman I've been trying to learn some music skills, but I'll probably just end up finding someone else
The visual bug is because my functions to determine if an entity is in the camera don't work, so it ends up drawing everything outside the cameras. They worked before so I don't know why they don't work anymore
I didn't put too much thought into the bombing mission, just slapped a ton of ground units in. I guess it was just to say that bombers will eventually be a thing
I can't beat Ofnir-Grabacr either, so they're definitely too hard. They shoot down your allies too fast and then all come after you. I'm trying to balance higher-skilled enemies towards one-on-one fights, like the Pixy fight, so they're less about spinning in circles
The slowed tempo is something with the mixer. I haven't quite figured it out yet since I only started with it today but all the tracks sound a bit slow

Again, thanks for the feedback. This demo day was pretty successful

Being an archer requires skill, so if you want to be realistic, I suggest not making the archers female. Just make them the healer or something that requires nothing but boobs.

Most of the feedback I got was about the ship getting lost in the background, so I took the opportunity to un-fuck the code around it and get a sprite that doesn't look complete like crap.

it should be exactly the same as making any kind f bullet collision, just make the hitboxes slow and big..

>objects move (sprites for corresponding notes/buttons)
>once htey're on top of the hitbox press the button, causing it to activate

Shouldn't be very difficult. You can potentially make the notes have multiple hit boxes so the closer you are the more points (corresponding to the bad/good/great etc)

You're most likely just going to need to count the steps and have that being the spawn timers.

Kind of a simplistic way to look at it. Women are inferior to men in a lot of major areas on average, but that's on average. There's a huge spectrum of men and women. Despite men being on average much stronger than women, there are still a few women stronger than some men for example. Even though most of the best chess players are men, there are still really good women who play chess that could destroy 99% of male chess players. Really everyone should be judged as an individual.

Unityfag here. Is f bullet a GM specific thing? The naive way I would make the rhythm game is have a queue of the next notes, and compare the object's position when the key is pressed to the target position, find the distance, and feed that to a function that calculates bad/good/great/miss. Seems simpler than having multiple hitboxes.

Oh, also, I guess I should explain that the overarching point of the game is to control territory, kinda like grand strategy (I've never actually played GS, so I don't know for sure). Basically, each map is its own territory and you're trying to conquer/unite the whole continent.

Anyway, that's where the real problem comes in, because I can't think of a theme that would also make sense where you'd be conquering territory.

artists and programmers are like oil and vinegar

It'll mix for awhile, but they always separate.

Artists often have their own vision for the things theyre making. While a developer may have another. So if the programmer is the project lead they may end up butting heads with things.

From my experience, artists are also pretty flakey, or they take longer than expected, especially when they've already been paid. Theres also entitlement and such.

Basically a high quality artist, who can meet deadlines, and has reasonable prices with no commitments is hard to come by.
>>
>>147992616
What's the problem with that anon? you can't just judge your game with an opinion of only one guy.
>>
>>147992975
Get general idea, write out general mechanics, take a few days to make a small alpha with the general mechanics I have, see if it would be fun, and if it is, then give a more detailed overview on paper. Then, again on paper, go through each level in my head and write/draw what will be planned for it. Everytime I have a mechanic I want to implement that may be hard, I write down how i would go about implementing that. Once I have that done, I get to work.

I don't worry about designing all the enemies and indepth graphics and such at that point, I usually worry about that stuff as I go along each level when actually making the game.

But that may be a really bad way to do it and only why I've finished 1 out of the 8 games I've done (hopefully 2/9 in a few months)
>>

>>147993034
Because a scenery is not enough to make a game, and also because artists ask for money for literally everything.

Don't get me wrong, it's ok to ask money for a job but at the start of a project nobody is expecting to get paid for making a simple prototype, except artists.

Basically, you have to :
- pay them before
- pay them during prototype stage
- pay them during alpha and beta stage
- pay them to finish
- pay them a part when the game is starting to bring money in

It's pretty unreasonable to ask why full length games don't tend to look like beautiful pictures that are made to be standalone pieces.

It takes lots of time and talent, and time and talent takes a lot of money. Indie developers and people with enough time and cash to make every part of a game look like a masterpiece are groups that don't have much overlap.

Is it because Like any arts field there's tons of people who try and few who succeed in getting somewhere. While game programmers can just do whatever because they have other types of software development as last resort and it's not hard to get a job like that.

How do I go about hiring an artist? Do I pay 1/3rd up front and pay the rest later?
>>
>>147994563
>So why do artists not work for the prospect of getting paid like most who make games?
Because fuck the "prospect" of getting paid that's not how professionals operate. Only the most defunct startup companies try to dangle "prospects" in front of people and they're a big reason the failure rate for startups is so high.

Not sure how "most who make games" operate but many game devs are NEET failures who are broke as fuck and not something to be emulated. Like gogem.pro

>Is it because Like any arts field there's tons of people who try and few who succeed in getting somewhere. While game programmers can just do whatever because they have other types of software development as last resort and it's not hard to get a job like that.

Sure but let's be honest, as a programmer I would also not work for the "prospect" of being paid. Clients either paid me or I fired them. Artists operate by the same principle. Unless they're greenhorn as fuck in which case hopefully someone teaches them some business sense.

you make arrangements.

You can have payments everytime an asset is completed.

You can have everything up front.

But always get a contract for paid work.

If they flake out you can sue their ass for failing to complete their side and you can usually get your money back or damages.

Does anyone know the reason why programmers are so willing to do entirely speculative work for no pay, that is, indie games?
I have some theories but maybe someone has more solid knowledge.
>Programmers are worth $50K minimum on the open market at any nongames job, and $100K if they are skilled enough to hack it for years as an indie. So taking two years or more off is not a real risk for them, as they can earn it back in a year at a real job. But artists are worth, what, $50K tops? And game art is not a skill that transfers to other art fields as easily as programming.
>Programmers take more ownership of the projects, they come up with more original mechanics, they are the leaders when there is no real director. They really do get final say in how the game works.
>Software already has a startup culture, but art doesn't really. I'm not sure about this, doesn't every artist hope to get noticed.
>Programmers can afford to hire artists, but not vice versa . So naturally the artist gets paid :^)
Anyone else know?

The programmer usually is actively making money from their work so can afford to be generous and patient.

The musician is just happy to have someone listen to or use his work and already understands that music is a lost cause financially.

The artist can only survive by demanding payment for their work at all times otherwise they might as well be a grocery clerk and give up.
>>
>>147995291
How about this? Programmers aren't whores and just expect to get their money once the product is finished.
A project can fail, that's the risk and everyone accepts it. Everyone but artists, they are the only ones who want to get paid because they think we won't be able to make anything without them.
And then, we started getting games with pixel limbs, programmer arts or even procedurally generated art on the market.

Artists here are always making fun of how programmers will become obsolete but honestly I think that the opposite will happen first.
The day someone makes a software that allows any non-artists to be able to make their own characters and scenery is the day when you will see only that kind of art on the indie scene.
People can get away with shitty art so you don't need an artist to fix anything, coding on the other hand..

Nobody understands what the programmer did and don't give a shit unless he's working with a musician and artist
>>
>>147995643
Yes. Most definitively. He technically does C++ but it's really just C. C is a very easy to understand language. He's going at it at high phase. I suggest you watch at your own phase. He recommends programming along but I disagree. Its much more important to just understand what's going on and why he's doing what he's doing.

You maybe should try and learn basic stuff in C first so it's easier to follow along. Alternatively Google when you don't understand. I'm not sure what's best really. Hard to tell.

Hello folks. Never posted in here before.

I'm a writefag by profession. While most of my day-to-day writing is of the non-fiction variety, a number of years ago I started working on a sort of speculative fiction novel. To make a long story short, I'm retarded and I lost the whole thing because I didn't back it up.

I've wanted to rewrite the book from the beginning, because I do think that it's a worthwhile idea, but every time I start, I can't seem to bring myself to do it and just remember all the work that I've lost. Last night, however, someone suggested to me that I turn it into a visual novel.

This sounds like a great idea to me as it's both different enough from what I had originally done to keep me interested, and challenging enough that I'm willing to bet I'll gain some new skills by the end of all of it.

I'll have to find and pay an artist to handle the "visual" aspect, but I figured that the coding aspect of things is likely to be relatively simple--as coding goes, anyways--since I don't really have to program in any physics or anything like that. I want to try and have the framework all ready to go before I pay someone to make the assets. It will run smoother, I think, I won't have to worry I'm paying for something that will never get finished, and I think it will leave me in a better position when negotiating a fee.

Problem is, I don't know the tiniest beginning of a fuck about any of it, or what I should start learning about.

So, where the hell do I start?

It's be great if I could start learning to use a tool or language or whatever that I could use for my final product; my only real needs would be dialogue, branching paths, changing character art and backgrounds, occasional "spread/splash/whatever" images, music and sounds, and to play pre-recorded video. And, if possible, I'd like to try and put in a very simple tower-defense like hacking game at certain points of the story.

Where the hell do I start learning?

tl;dr how make game?

Software development. I manage a small team.

I'm not working all 14 hours, I usually take 2-3 hours of straight up breaks and then obviously downtime while coding for thinking, coffee/water breaks, bathroom, etc.

They have food there so I don't have to leave. I stay later because its easier to get home after rush hour and then I usually just sleep.

If they let me keep a bed in my office I'd probably crash there 3-4 nights a week just because it would be easier.

It's not sustainable. I'm going to make like 2-4 million dollars and retire on a hobby farm back home when I'm like 35.

What you're saying is that anarchy devolves into states.
Not anarcho capitalism specifically.

But the big mistake people make when considering these ideologies is that you're considering our current culture.

I disagree that we'd (here anyway) start murdering each other tomorrow if all laws disappeared. But if that's the case where you live try to imagine a place where people are raised well and people see more of the long term effects of their actions.

They gave me assignments and when u had complaints about how the assignments were far too restrictive to teach anyone programming I got the literal answer "well you know too much to really get anything out from this". Yes, even at university they have passing as the main goal. Same problem with math and physics there. But im not as good there so it's less of an issue.

Sounds like a shit university or course

At my uni the functionality ceiling for projects is insane - last semester people were using thread pooling, radix sorting and AVX instructions among many other things, all for less than 0.5% extra.

In an operating systems class.

Obviously really well made. Things work pretty well.

I like that you removed the indicator around the character. I think you made the heart go from red to lighter red as you use charges which I think is an elegant solution. Doesn't break up the aesthetic and conveys the remaining charges on dash to be low.

I don't like this kind of super meat boy/I wanna be the guy style game but the movement was pretty fun. I don't really like the hopping while on the ground, it makes it very difficult to do minor adjustments to position. I think if you made it more of a walk while on the ground at least it would work better.

But obviously I'm not your target market.

>it's fragile
Then democracy is problematic.
Anon there's no reason why force being centralized is better than decentralized force.

Sure, if you exclude large groups of people you can quite easily ensure that your society is objectively better. But if you look at the world right now it's not in good shape. Would we have these problems with anarchy? Would we have China's problems or India's problems or even any of the multiple wars we have going on right now?

If you limit scope, yes. Democracy is certainly very good if you just look at the upper middle class in America or the western world in general. But if you care for more than that you get a lot of issues.
>>147998404
Sounds like pretty basic shit though anon.
>thread pooling
Whatever threaded scheme you're using we pretty much had one scheme required for each project.
>AVX
How is that even hard? SIMD is pretty basic shit.
>radix sorting
Super specific problem with a known solutions. Wowzies.

My complaint wasn't about what specific 'difficulties' they were missing. It's about how you learn. If I'm required to do a job system for a project (we never had to do a 'job system', we just needed concurrency) they shouldn't lock me in enough by arbitrary restrictions to make the assignment easier for those who don't know enough to choose the way to do things.

That's what bothered me the most. And I'm sure you agree that's ridiculous. I'm also pretty sure you've experienced the 'do this with a binary tree' assignments for example. There was too much of a "with a" in my courses.

Nobody learns how to be good at writing software that way. So for me who already knew most of the core stuff the courses taught me it was better to just go on my own. And if you can't learn that on your own you're not gonna learn it at university.

I see that you posted a pic of a book, I purchased a book a few weeks back called "Unity in Action".

It's been alright but honestly, it's no better than the plethora of tutorials around the internet. You are going to hack everything together at first, at second, and probably at third attempts to make something mediocre, and it will take ten times longer than you want it too.

But you will start learning how to get this object to talk to that object, or this trigger to set such and such condition. After that, it becomes more an exercise in how do I put these rudimentary bits of logic together to achieve a desired outcome, and then you slap a graphic on top of it.

You could try learning C# or javascript outside of Unity, but unless you plan on developing apps or programs that aren't game dev related then you will probably be better off with trial and error messing around in Unity. Try not to learn it all, only read through the documentation to find exactly what you are trying to do, and don't be afriad to ask on the Unity forums, there are people who will help even the simplest of problems.

Game dev as a whole is pretty daunting but it's really just a series of small bits interacting with each other. Although it'd be woefully inefficient, you could code an entire game with just "if" statements.
>>
>>147998957
My university taught in incredibly broad strokes.

Like 90% of my learning that was useful and practical was done by the project course which we were 100% on our own for, which means I got really experienced in google-fu.

Coding books are fucking -useless- when you can google specific questions. Someoen on stack overflow has asked it.
>>
Demo day needs a broader audience. I say we have a reboot.
>>
>>147998957
I think you're misunderstanding me. Students were learning skills from units to be taken 2 semesters later, from scratch, of their own accord.

Learning how to write a thread pooling library in C for an assignment worth 6% with 3 days to do it is not 'easy'. At the very least it was not at all expected of students to learn on their own in the middle of the semester.

The only kinds of restrictions were few and far between, save for compiler flags we could only use the power method when building an 'efficient' pagerank program.
>>
>>147999286
agdg as a whole needs a reboot
This entire thread is a meme plagued with constant sabotage attempts by steamchat, IRC, rogue shitposters, organized shitposter cells, the /v/ thread, the 8c han thread, the 8c han BOARD (they're so much of a problem you can't even mention them on this site), dogposters, frogposter, assorted animalposters, the reddit board and the facepunch thread. My current job the guys were graduates from my program. My friend and I both got interviews.

They told us post-interview that they were going to disregard us because they knew how shitty the course was for anything applicable. Then they saw the project work we did and they gave us a shot.

So yeah, fuck university. Biggest scam in the world. You'd be better served being a fucking NEET and actually doing focused learning.

can we just be honest here for a moment? /v/ threads are more positive but they are also full of idea guy tier posting with the only real posts about actual game development being from agdg posters. game development is fucked up and the agdg /vg/ threads reflect that. people who are just starting dont realize how fucked up it is and so they come in all nice and positive but this is the reality here in these threads, people like googum and vine and hopoo are the reality. so suck it the fuck up and deal with it or go back to /v/ to post idea guy tier shit that is not possible to make (but at least its fuuuun and sounds good right?)

Actually, earlier there were new people shitposting and calling people whodevs, erroneously. I'd like it if we were even more closed-off because no one lurks anymore. So it's glaringly obvious when someone comes in here and tries to mimic thread-culture.

RPG Maker 95 and beyond. I was a longtime member at RPG2knet and GamingW. I think I had over 20,000 posts and still no game. It was pretty cool, though: RPG Maker taught me basic programming stuff like variables and switches.

Then I went to college and wanted to be an electrical engineer so I could build a light saber. I quickly realized that was stupid and unrealistic, so I decided to become a game dev instead.

What a perfect statement to reflect the kind of myopic inbred retarded point of view so many agdg gnomes hold. There's a whole world of gamedev going on outside of agdg with gamedevs who are nothing like googem vine or hopoo.

Look at yanderedev and what he's done despite being an ultra autist. Grew up on 4chan and is now primed to cash in for millions with a Unity asset flipping game whenever he wants. He spent zero time in agdg so he isn't anything like those fags you just mentioned. Probably took one look at it (if ever) and laughed at the idea of spending time here.

I understand, but you'll eventually be able to say hey, I made a game, and look back to see how you evolved as an artist through those years

I believe that finishing and polishing your work are also skills in themselves

in any case, keep it up, I think you should be proud of yourself
>>
>>147998140
You should, that video gave me the motivation to finish my game for dd9

I don't think I could make the Demo Day, only really started back up from a 2 years hiatus like a week ago and I really didn't have anything to show.

Ill hopefully have some nice stuff to show at the next one though!

Every game should have music like this.

Are you writing your own physics or handling physics with GM's built in functions (not 'use physics', but speed, direction, etc)? Just wondering.

Don't bother at this point, I uploaded my game kinda late and it has no fucking downloads. People only try the first batch and give great feedback, then after that they stop caring.
>>
>>147998140
Doesn't really matter if nobody plays past the first 20 submissions.

Guys, people complained that 15 fucking MB was too large. So I split the windows and cross-platform versions into separate downloads. Now it's only 7 MB.

I'm packing in the Java Runtime Environment, because apparently I can't assume that people have Java installed

Good.
That's a good tradeoff.
A reason not to use java. But if you want to it's certainly better to be 15 megs than demand they install the JRE.

100% worth it even at 100 megabyte extra just for the JRE packing. Never don't do that.

>a reason not to use Java
If you use C#, you need to have .NET runtimes installed. If you use Game Maker, you need to have Visual C++ Runtime installed. This is not some dealbreaking flaw.

Have you considered that there's alternatives that don't have its flaw?
You have no idea how annoyed people are at the 'installing prerequisites' on steam.

You see streamers straight up not play the game when they discover that assuming it's a small download.

It's a major downside. So definitively pack it.
>>
>>148006990
No, I mean "a reason not to use Java" implies that this is inherent some flaw in the Java platform compared to other platforms.
>>
>>148007150
Yeah. Well don't you think it's a bit much to expect extremely generic speech?
