Colored elements have both a smoother ramp up (feels like you're getting stronger and making progress weekly if not daily), AND you will reach your end-game faster. After 3 months of playing light and hitting rank 70, I'm finally able to MVP omegas. Meanwhile I've unlocked every tier III job class except 1. It's not because I suck, I just didn't have the attack power. Well it's possible it's because I suck too but being stuck at 20K attack power or less for a long time was also a reason.
If you start with a colored element and then go light or dark, it'll make that grind much easier as well. You can host and get double red chests, farm events effectively, etc.
