Reposting from last thread.

Hi, I'm not exactly a new game dev but I haven't yet completed a game yet. However, I think I have an idea of what I want to do.

I like playing Corruption of Champions but I dislike it for three reasons:

1.) It is made in Flash. Flash will soon become deprecated and newer technologies are appearing, things like HTML5, WebGL, CSS3, etc. Therefore, I want to recreate the engine using these technologies.
2.) Furries. I hate em'. This leads into my third reason.
3.) I dislike the way the story ended up. The game was like, oh, wow, you're corrupted. Guess it's fine now, totally okay to let down your friends and family. Basically it was fanfiction tier writing.

Therefore, I want to create a CoC clone, except with less faggotry and more plot. Add in a multiple follower system, camp raids, actual difficulty, a changed combat system, and keeping the player transformation system (but delaying transformations). Plus, if I could hire an artist or get good enough at drawing, I could make a character viewer.

So, this is just me throwing my ideas out there. I pretty much made the UI all in HTML5 and CSS3, and there's still a little bit left for cross-browser compatibility.

TL;DR, I could use some feedback on my ideas / UI designs. It does not show, but there are shortcut keys to activate each button.

Practice. I suck at it too but when you get used to it it's not that hard I think. Every rhythm game needs repeated playthroughs to git gud.

Wait, what do you mean exactly? I thought I already synced the song to the beatmap.
if you really did it should be unlocked in the main menu screen
otherwise try to get a A, I may have forgotten to make S rank unlock the costume because I thought no one would be able to get it

Sorry you feel that way kiddo
I feel like demoday encourages people who wouldn't normally post progress to share by making it into an event.

I get being a little upset at completed games showing up one day just to shill, but a "my first geme DD6 edition" that gets posted once isn't all that bad, don't you think? It shows we've got some actual aspiring devs here

>>147802058

I mean that timing the button press wrong should play a sound out of sync. It works really well in IIDX, but I can understand if it won't work for a game that doesn't require massive amounts of button presses
It's probably broken, I did this next and I still don't see any secret costume. What's the criteria for unlocking it?
>>
>>147802564
Then define for me, please, what is a bad code? I'm honestly curious. The only occasion when a code works but is bad is when it has shit performance, but for me that goes into the bad code category.
>>
>>147802478
>At least for some games I think it's pretty valuable knowing how a first time player plays your game
It is
>>
>>147802639
Oh I see. I thought about adding sfw when you hit or miss a beat but kind of forgot to implement it.
Shit, I have on idea then. Can you show me how the title screen looks? The only condition to unlock it is to get an A so it should be selectable now
>>
>>147802681
I've seen actual code where someone did
void ParentClass::func() {
static_cast<ChildClass*>(this)...
}

bad code can make it so you can't do things you want to do. bad code makes it so it takes a really long time to add something new. bad code is copy/pasting something over and over instead of doing it properly so it's difficult to modify.
>>
>>147802681
buggy, hard to read, unnecessarily long or convoluted, poorly designed

all of which leads to more bugs
>>
>>147802681
Not him but if it's disorganized or redundant then it can quickly become difficult to maintain and write, which can wind up wasting time on the part of the developer(s). I'd say that's bad.

Well, it's less that a miss sound is played and more that your timing being off means that beats of the song are off, if that makes sense.
>>
>>147802692
I think for most games it's not too hard to implement a rudimentary replay system

You just record the delta time (if any) and user input every frame to a text file

I had this in my love2d games but then I stopped using it. It helped me figure out my levels were hard as shit and not as intuitive as I thought

Adding a little more enemy variety. Now there's 3 spiders, 3 trolls, and 1 boss of each type. That's probably good enough.

I could use one of my xbox controllers, but I don't know if the game knew it was an xbox controller and the other xbox controller didn't work at all. They're not official Microsoft controllers, but they are made to be used with the Xbox 360 and I've used them both for xbox and xinput before.

With the controller that did work, the button used to start the game was mapped to the right stick being pushed down, which was hard to find. Movement only worked with the left stick and it was very hard to change direction. It felt like you had to return the stick to the centre position before you could move it in a new direction.

Loving the game itself though. I like the progress. That hunter is actually a threat now.

You should consider removing the black background from the game over screen. It makes taking a screenshot of your score more difficult than it should be.
The costume should switch when you click the button on the main menu.
Also, the first two parts near the beginning like this are out of sync. I think they're set a little bit too early, but either way they don't have the same timing as the song.

Just finished my game of the night

today's theme was 'match 3'

https://hephaestus_rg.itch.io/matchmeme

i'll make a stronger effort to get sounds done for tomorrow's challenge.

if you guys have suggestions for the next theme, then post them here.

i'd like to have a general idea fleshed out before i start next time, i spent a few hours on a concept that was going to take way too long for 1 night.
>>
>>147805253
The gameover and pause screens are the last things i worked on so yeah, I didn't pay much attention to them but you're right. I'll fix them.
For the costume, yeah I was thinking the same thing, it should be an easy fix so I'll do that right now.
As for that section of the song, you're absolutely right. I tweaked the timings a lot and still couldn't get it quite right. I'll work on it some more though.

>>147805752
The "Quit" button the pause menu should take you to the main menu.
>>
>>147805778
Yeah, those functions are basically "GM detects a joystick button #n is pressed" and you just map a key to it. But well, I'm not suprised they don't work properly with newer software/hardware. I'll have to look more on that.

With further testing, I'm seeing a bug with the controllers that appears similar to one I had when using legacy joystick functions in Studio.

If I run your game with a controller that is confirmed to work plugged in, it runs at the proper frame rate, but if I run it with a controller that doesn't work or with no controller plugged in at all there is a noticeable hit to the framerate.

If this is the same bug I had, I narrowed this issue down to all the joystick functions taking a really long time to run all their code if they are unable to find any connected joysticks.
I fixed it by having a joystick_exists() saved somewhere and checking it was true before getting any input from the controller.

Idoldev, playing 4k rhythm games is not fun one handed and if you try to play it two-handedly with the QWER layout you get cramps. So consider making the DF-JK layout the default, pretty much everyone that plays 4k rhythm games uses this layout.

I agree with both things that people have already said
>Game needs a different control scheme, or maybe just an option to keybind it to your own taste. Using QWER two handed is kinda difficult for people with big hands or small keyboards.
>Sometimes the song layout feels off beat with confuses me a lot because I usually end pressing the keys to the beat of the song.
Also I know this is kinda inevitable, but you focus so much on the song you barely look at the bunny and miss all her dance moves and expessions.
Besides that is really fun, and I would keep playing. But poor Bunny will never be an idol with me because I really suck at rythm games.

https://itch.io/jam/agdg-demo-day-9/rate/74916

It has a new tutorial / story introduction section at the beginning that takes about 10 minutes. So if you've got 10 minutes to spare I'd love to hear your thoughts on it. The character names aren't final either, still trying to think of better ones.

Now I'm going to try to play every demo and leave a comment for each....

Their AI still works because if I get too close, they attack - they just never move. If I delete some enemies, they start working again. I have no fucking clue how to fix this.

I'll ask here, too, just for good measure.

would an action game similar to pic related be alright to make in GameMaker? I don't know how well GM games do in terms of performance when there's a bunch of stuff going on on-screen

mostly I'm worried about loading all the sprites needed for combat (several animation sets for the player and several enemies, attacks etc.)

also I have never even touched programming anything

No, it's actually this: https://www.freesound.org/people/dlovere/sounds/167571/ with a filter applied. It's a really nice laugh though.

Also I just played your game before. Here's the feedback I left on itchio:

- As always your title screen pixel art looks really nice.
- I game over'd on Night 4 due to running out of time. I think you need another way to scale the difficulty as the nights progress (although I guess this is just for the demo).
- I'd be interested to see how the game would play with: way longer time limit, 2+ enemy dudes, only 1 villager girl at a time, and some way to affect the movement of the other characters (e.g. lure the enemies away while you trap the girl). Or something. Just more a "stealth game" compared to the current "frantically mass leech hordes of girls".
- You've really captured the classic pixel art aesthetic well.
- I can't really tell what the enemy dude is doing when he catches you. It sort of looks like he's holding something up but I can't tell what it is... maybe it should be a cross?
- The girls really like running across the bridges towards me at the start.

Thanks, I apreciatte your feedback a lot.
The time limit will have a lot of rework in the future, either by making it longer, and/or having some sort of special item or power that you can use to stop the timer or move faster for a few seconds.
Same with the villagers, I want to rework their AI to make them more intelligent, adding stuff like have them act different if they see you, run away from you or alert the hunter. Wich will make you be more stealthy when hunting. Still have to think a lot on how to implement that wthout loosing the fast-paced feel.
The hunter is supposed to hold garlic when he catches you, but seems it isn't legible enought, so I have been thinking about changing it for a cross too.

To be honest I don't have an idea, I started playing it thinking I was the frog and that it was a shoot 'em up and somehow managed to make 4000 points. Then I realized I was not the frog started trying to understand it and couldn't get past 100 points.
>>
>>147810773
Two small things I noticed, which you're probably already aware of. Fistly, walking whilst up against a wall will often make you "hump" the wall, like the player is sliding up and down the wall small bits in a jagged manner. Secondly, shooting the robots feels a bit flacid - there's not enough juice, in other words.

Still though, this is really neat.
>>
>>147812472
Lesson learned.
>>
>>147812526
I don't know if someone who can't even figure out how to play a game where you press one button should be allowed to give that kind of feedback.

Even with no gems on the screen and a cripplingly unstable fps I can get the frog from the bottom of the screen back to the top. So when you hear that people to actually die from falling off the screen, you've got to wonder how they even manage to fuck up.

For a top down shooter, would you use cast a ray for conventional guns or would you use projectiles?

At the moment I'm casting a ray, but the ray is ignoring some of my rects (SDL) in my level. I'm considering just doing everything as projectiles and making sure they go slow enough to not pass through anything.

>>147812718
Yeah that 'humping' is the buggy collision code, it only corrects against one plane at a time, that typically being the floor. I have another approach for fixing it but that's even buggier right now

I'm intending on having them stagger a bit and making them flash white instead of tinting red. That, and some more particles like an oil splash should help. They're also not going to just "poof" out of existence forever, I just don't have a death animation yet.
>>
Does your game have any original or at least underused features?
Or is it just a straight up clone or a collage of features taken from already existing games?
>>
>>147813154
Yeah I'm probably going to go with projectiles, they seem easier.

I know a potential solution this problem though, I could join every adjacent vertically or horizontally, and it would probably work.

Trouble is I have no idea how to figure that out.

Oh well.
>>
>>147813229
No, I hate the game. Just not for retarded reasons like not being able to figure out how to work the one button the game uses.

I really don't like how jumping slows you down.
Add a shotgun.
>>
>>147814325

I don't know how much you can flesh out an experience based on the same game play mechanic. it would be like trying to make a unique type of tower defense which would end up feeling awkward like those orcs must die games.

A game where the level is a realtime 3D scanned scale model 3D printed in ice. The teams collect points and can extrude new ice infrastructure or aim a heatgun at their opponents area.

So it is a game that uses real destructible ice to "simulate" the ice level in game.
>>
>>147814398
Thanks!

>When you press the red button
It is supposed to end, I didn't get that ready in time for this demo day

>is there Mouse Acceleration?
No, I detest mouse accel, it just uses whatever your desktop mouse setup is because LibGDX doesn't have hardware mouse control as far as I know.

>Jumping slows you down
It doesn't, your horizontal velocity is preserved, you just can't accelerate properly in mid-air. This isn't something I'm planning on changing as it's implemented using the same algorithm as Quake's (just without strafe-jumping)

>Shotgun

I don't like zombies. Here, you have zombies, there's no need to explain why you're shooting masses of enemies. They are dumb, so you don't need to worry about tactics, at best they'll have better stats or special abilities.

I don't like survival games. There's no progression. You get better stuff. Better enemies appear. Resource management is just cumbersome for a single entity.

I don't like crafting systems. I don't see the appeal in trading X item for Y and calling it a craft. It's just more management.

I think map design is important in a FPS.

Basically i don't like the whole concept of your game. You should go to boards of people that enjoy that kind of stuff and ask there.

Is allowing the player full movement control while jumping a bad idea? I see in a lot of platformers the player usually has some control over jumping movement, but it seems like a lot of games used fixed distance and stuff and once you jump you're committed to that jump/direction.

yeah, the last few % of the votes were pushed through by a keys for votes scheme my publisher did (which every game seems to do now)

thought the initial 97% (?) was just from the page release. check the greenlight page, i think having a decent animated gif and trailer will work for you (and hitting popular tropes like roguelite, fps, zombies, survival..etc). i didn't/haven't marketed this in the slightest, that stuff is so boring to me but i know i gotta do it at some point

How do you debug segfaults? (in C/C++)
I have no decent debugging tools for it. I get invalid pointer dereferences and all kind of bullshit but there's just n debugging tools that help me with that. I don't see why, it should be among the most trivial stuff to debug. Should I just write some wrapping for memory allocation/freeing?

Ok I'm going to sleep now. 5 demos down, 25 left to go (although I guess there'll be way more tomorrow).

I'm still going to try to play every demo and leave a feedback comment for each. So don't feel bad even if you didn't get many downloads. There's always going to be some games in the spotlight - some have been in dev for a lot longer than most (and are insanely polished), others have certain aspects that make them more appealing for a quick demo (vs other games that need more effort from the player), etc.

Remember that demo day is a milestone in your own game's dev. Getting a demo together is an achievement in and of itself.

Well in this case the issue was really simple I was erasing items from a map while iterating through it so finding it was as simple as running the game with debugger and looking at which function it crashed in. The main issue was setting up the dev environment on an ancient XP laptop.

I was thinking more generally. I just don't know anything that can help me. If I've invalidated a pointer in some way I just don't know where from. I just know it has to be a system connected to something that operates on those pointers.
I'm tempted to start using all kinds of terrible C++ features but it hasn't been worth it in the past. If I could find some tool that lets me have more information it'd be great.
>>147824394
>subtle

Funny.
What's the symbolism in Bioshock though? It's just anarchic views.

You can attach symbolism after the fact. Since no symbolism is a 100% inclusive piece of material it's very easy. You just point them at it and let the viewers draw their conclusions. Just as long as there's enough to draw. There may be tweaking required.

Oh so apparently blatantly presenting political views in an extreme and bias manner is 'symbolism'.

I don't think it is. Symbolism is when you have an object/subject representing another thing in real life and you describe the real situation in terms of the ingame objects. Like an analogy except in a different context and more representing through action rather than relationships.
>>
>>147826579
I'm not making it for a jam, but selling it for 10 (or selling it at all) would be pretty presumptuous with the type of game it is.

No, that's not what I was getting at. I see a lot of proof-of-concepts or babby's first gameplay loops get posted ITT, but it doesn't look like anyone is actually trying to make a complete game. That doesn't mean AAA scale, just that it is a packaged thing.

I went to google and apparently he's based on Ayn Rand. So I felt a little embarrassed I don't know enough about literature to get any of those references.

But a juxtaposition like that is clearly not symbolism in any way. It's Andrew Ryan being completely oblivious to his hypocrisy at best.

Hey snek dev, i played your demo and i like it

here are some pointers

- make a UI element that displays what unit you have selected, what abilities it has(and what they do), how many "moves" it has(left) and how many tiles it covers
- make it more obvious somehow that the first ability is a "move-attack" and consider giving the sword a "move only" ability instead
- make the border where enemies can spawn glow a special color or something
- consider making the symbols/models for the different "programs" a tad bit bigger so it's more clear what they are
- its not all that clear since most everything is an instakill right now, but it seems damage propagates from head to tail as opposed to from tail to head like in the lego game. i dont think this is a good way to interpret that game since the entire premise was that different damage values would matter since a cheap enemy could leave your big "unit" with fewer segments to pull off expensive abilities rather than simply killing it outright. as well as gigantic bloating units not dying instantly from a shot to the "head".

Okay, AGDG. Good friend is an artist and we were going to do a point-and-click adventure for Space Jam, but IRL shit came up so now I'm working alone.

I don't mind doing programmer art, but I'm going to hold off on the adventure game until we can collaborate

Now I need to start over with brainstorming an idea for Space Jam. The games I enjoy most are cozy games I can enjoy while watching TV. That means (in addition to the aforementioned point-and-click adventures), games like Arcanum, Fallout 1 & 2, Spiderweb Software games, Ultima, etc.

But that's way too fucking huge for the amount of time allotted.

What do?

Guys, serious question:

Why do you guys laugh at unity?

I am not even considering using it since besides C++, Python and a marginal amount of JavaScript, I don't know any other languages, so I am mostly looking into frameworks/libraries/engines using C++. Still curious, though, because it seems so popular and from what I've read, it has good tools for VR (better than UE4 from what I've read).
>>
>>147831206

well one, like the other anon said, just fucking do it, and two, scale it back, keeping stripping features of those games that mean little to you until you come up with something you can dev yourself
>>
>>147818476
If you stream it Ion twitch you can automatically post the VOD to youtube.
just play them game in a defined order and people who can't watch it live can find their game pretty easy that way

Vr-tools are just as good in both, with UE4 having some better performance.

i have a couple of feedback for you:
-no edge panning, this I feel is a must
-middle mouse panning should be reversed direction i think
-text is unreadable on the default zoom level
-really fucking arcane resolutions supported, you need to add at least 1080p support
-the area display for aoe attacks is a bit confusing

overall the game is pretty well made and all the stuff are just nitpicks. has good potential for the srpg niche

I need to make a huge tilemap. Each tile would contain it's type, coordinates, if you can move onto it or not, if the tile is occupied, a list of adjoining tiles, etc.
What would be the best way to store all this data? I need suggestions since I'm not sure if writing a huge-ass array in a script is the best idea lol. It's what I'm currently doing as I'm working on other things.

Handmadehero.org made a very nice tilemap system. Virtually infinite, allows for cheap async simulation.

What are you working in?
Regardless of the performance the basic sparse tilemap storage scheme he's implementing will probably work fine.

https://hero.handmade.network/episode/game-architecture/day031
https://hero.handmade.network/episode/game-architecture/day035

The basic rundown of this system is that the world is chunked, every chunk contains a static amount of tiles. The chunks are stored in a hashtable which you index into using a hash made from your chunk coordinates for each entity. There's then sub-chunk posiitoning via floating point XY coordinates.

It's a very simple system.

He went further with it afterwards but you don't have to. I don't think this system would be all that problematic even for a slow-language game.

Using a csv file would still allow for a custom notation, but if you have extra data attached to each tile a custom file format would be better,

>>147835332
You have a pretty low fill ratio on the map. You should think about whether it's worth it saying what is in every tile, or just listing the tiles that have something, and then assigning a default (e.g. grass) to the ones you didn't specify.

Like, have a data structure that's a Map((x,y) -> tileType)

Does working on game mods make a person likely to be better at just like making game?

Been thinking about modding Baldur's Gate 2, Wasteland 2, or Torchlight 2, but I also want to make my own game. Will doing the former help me with the latter at all?
>>
>>147835489
>are you saying that's _real_ proper English or something people generally understand?

I've seen people get mad about it on the interbutts but it's just accepted without question for corporate communications where I'm from. There are persistent people who insist it's better to use wordplay to leave out the pronoun entirely.

Also CSV is the easiest thing to write a parser for. Just look for the next comma.

I never tried modding but I don't see why not
>>
>>147835849
Yeah. They certainly will assuming it's a mod that actually goes some depth. You have to consider what you can do in the game. 'extending' the game with new functionality like lets say Dota 2 did with WC3 is definetively very close to making games. Making extra pretty snow in Skyrim is just texturing. Building a new scenario for Baldurs gate/wasteland 2 would be good practice assuming you don't limit yourself according to what you feel is convenient for your development.
But it's not like the barrier to entry to making games is high. I think that you should probably start there if you want to make a game. You should mod if you feel like that's what you want to do. It's gonna help you probably. But making a game is the best way to learn how to make a game.
>>147836048
>it's just look for the next comma
It's a very simple format for sure. But when you suddenly need to extend your datagathering it's not that good. I think just a file with ASCII and some labels is fine.
>>
>>147834606
The way I prefer to do stuff like that is to make an image file like png, make a color to represent each file type, and then make a system to read the png one pixel at a time. That way you can easily edit it in paint or similar software, and prevent the human mistakes that comes from making stuff like that in text files.
>>
>>147835849
i made a decently rated dota2 mod, but valve updates broke my game. i learned a lot about animating and texturing through the mod. because thats what i changed mostly. the programmming side of things was kind of simple on my end just a lot of number tweaking and disabling of functions

>>
>>147836449
*each tile type
>>
>>147836567
yeah every update fucked with a system i had in place or something. the one that put the nail in the coffin is when they shifted to source 2 and all of the source 1 files were deleted making it impossible to edit animations already in the game.

after months i tried loading it up in the client and it just crashes at startup. worst and best game dev experience for me. luckily now i have a code monkey
>>
>>147836449
Honestly that was my first idea. Just have no idea how to read a color of a each pixel in a picture in C#.

Maybe I will just use Matlab to read my picture and convert it to some readable file.

@clarent dev, game is pretty cool.. i think i made it to the end or at least i couldn't find anywhere else to go

the only real problems i have with your games are the hitboxes (if that's how you're doing it) for savepoints/chests, felt very finicky to me - having to stand in a particular position but not directly over that object

2. text is a little slow, and 3. when the player is given an item/ability, you should either describe the ability or direct them to the menu that does

i was jumping around for 10 minutes aimlessly before i realized that i'd picked up double jump

Haven't played the game, but from that image with a text that puts Man before kings or gods, all the art deco stuff, and the fact that the guy's name seems to be Andrew Ryan (check the filename), I'd say it's a reference to Ayn Rand and her novel Atlas Shrugged.

Not sure though, maybe it's something US specific.
