Ok, so I know we can make SPARKs in the Character Pool. but I haven't finished my first campaign with them yet, so can someone tell me how the Character Pool affects SPARKs?

For example, if you set your options for a game to "Character Pool only," does the game actually draw SPARKs from the pool whenever you build one in the Proving Grounds?

You can lose a mission or maybe two, but not squad members at the same time.

Legend difficulty curve is just like EU impossible, you absolutely must win the early missions but once you reach a certain point it hardly matters (and you can straight up skip them). In EU that point was getting a colonel sniper, in 2 it's probably just simply getting psionics up and running. It's also pretty hard to lose with a full squad of grenadiers. Legend just happens to be more drawn out so that will also affect the scales.

It's not the end of the world

If it's a guerrilla op, losing to the timer means you lose out on the reward(sometimes pitiful, sometimes good), a dark event gets through, and the councilman calls you mediocre. Council missions however, best case you somehow manage to get the entire squad extracted and gain absolutely nothing. If you're struggling on the timer, that's rarely going to happen forever, so you'll be forced to evac with 2+ guys on the field. That is worse, but still manageable, as you can fill in the slots with people from HQ/Black market, although you have to dish out considerable supplies/intel.

All in all, painful, but manageable. Don't do it repetedly

I swear the openxcom AI's logic/aggression for attacking xcom bases is way different from the original DOS games. Like it'll hammer your shit like the fist of the north star, there's something wrong with it.

I think the last time I had an OpenXcom playthrough, base defenses were like one of the most common missions I had to play because they just couldn't stop trying to raid my bases. I didn't even have any of the OXC options like the aggressive scanning on or anything.

The way I'd do it is to create a slot in the Laboratory that you can slot a soldier into to give them a gene mod. Gene mods are just unique perks that add abilities or static effects, depending. That's how I'd run it, anyway.

The thing with armor rush in LW is that it's overkill. You can get 7hp (on a 4hp rookie) from day one, which is enough to survive any sectoid shot in cover and most of the flanking crits too. Ranked up soldiers will be 8hp (unless it's a squishy class that started as a 3hp rookie), and that's enough to slug it out with non-flanking thin men or floaters. With alien materials you can boost that to 9; there's no reason to go any deeper, what does having 10 base HP give you that 9 already doesn't? Nothing can hit that high.

Well, you do get biotanks (which are amazing except on council missions) and overall more mobility, but I doubt anon was going for that.

Infantry pretty recently opened up. The first real ones hit the fleet maybe a year ago? I know AFSOC just opened like six months ago because my brother was at Lackland for basic and the first female PJ candidate was there at the same time.
I was at Camp Lejeune when the first females graduated SOI East (and were promptly assigned a non-combat MOS anyway). I was none too impressed and neither was anyone in the training command, from what I heard.

Most of the issue comes from lower platoon performance in integrated platoons versus traditional. On top of that, the most pressing issue, their physical standards are not equal and there's a big mess saying how it could endanger the platoon if a female can't live up to a male's standards. You got 65lbs of gear on, your buddy has 65lbs of gear on, you weigh 120lbs and he weighs 180lbs, he gets shot, you gotta carry him at a jog for 200 yards. God forbid your buddy is a machinegunner or a SMAW gunner. Not many women can do it so people call it an endangerment.

Plus the Marines actually just removed pullups from the female PFT so they can do pushups instead, making it easier and exacerbating the worry. It's all a big mess right now.

I mean, he's got a vanilla leged X2 playthrough he's slowly updating on X2 that's already left the early game behind. I don't think he's had a single hiccup in that game. It'll show you someone smashing legendary, but its not his best work.

The streams have moved on to heavily modded X2, but are actually pretty good now. He toned it back and its a challenge, but stuff isn't breaking constantly and he doesn't tweak stuff on stream.

If you want to use this one its provides a better los preview than what's in the vanilla game (includes flanks, los on objectives, squad-sight on targets). Could be helpful if your trying to hunt for that one tile that has vision on the objective.

I hate mercenaries so much. Even after you figure out all their tricks it doesn't matter becuase their ships are always loaded, they have good gear, high health, and just good stats overall.

Only two bit the dust, but of my 16 crew, at least 3/4 of them are wounded and out for a month+

Good news is that with this raid I don't need to ever bother with them again. With the capture of multiple engineers and a captain, any technological secrets they were hiding will soon be mine.

I just realized how big the Micro/Strategy portion of PirateZ gets as the game progresses. I've now got four different bases, they all have very different functions.

Base 1 houses my Assault craft and troops, as well as being my primary research base.

Base 2 Exists to provide hangar space for my expanding fleet (6 hangars) and spits out counterfeit money and a variety of alcohols for easy cash.

Base 3 is my primary production center and makes all my craft, craft weapons, guns, ammo, and armors.

Base 4 exists to have a foothold in the Western hemisphere and has training facilities both physical and psi to pump out new recruits with incredibly high stats to be garrisoned at other bases for defense and to restock my assault team with fresh blood when they take casualties.

I clawed my way to this point with a single small base and 500,000 in cash. Maintenance for all my staff, ships, and facilities now cost me $5,201,500 a month, and I have an income of $8,670,000.

In my usual weekly management I deal with the manufacturing, purchasing, and selling of items ranging from 50 bucks to a million each.

My initial staff was about 10 engineers, and 12 squaddies. I now have 109 soldiers and 165 engineers on staff.

The first technological advancements involved black powder bombs, muskets, bows, and spears. At this point I pump out armor that can allow soldiers to survive exposure to lasers, plasma, and heavy explosives, as well as rudimentary powered armor. Weapons that can now be fielded consistently consist of lasers, gauss, and precision explosives.

I'd say I go on a minimum of 10 missions per month, maximum about 20. In those months I skip anywhere from 50 to 75 percent of all possible missions I could pursue.

3.75 years into the campaign and still going strong.

When you get later in the game, there is just zero reason to go on some missions, besides money and score (which I rarely need either). The smaller ships won't have weapons I need, won't have tech I need, won't have materials I need, and won't have prisoners I need. There are entire factions that I ignore 90% of the time now.

I have a very focused research game at this point, so I know what missions I need to go on and which ones I can skip.

With maxed stats in relevant areas, this bow deals 99 cutting damage, is 100% accurate up to 30 tiles, and only cost 35 TUs to fire. That's really impressive. Considering a gauss rifle only deal 85 piercing, I'm not surprised they didn't bother explaining how this "Future" bow even works.

You can mine hellerium literally from the start of the game with just an excavator.

Pimping is also piss easy, you just need to research the various slave types. Which you really should start hoarding since you're already on year 4. They add negative storage space which is amazing. I have hundreds of slaves and am at year 3 and a half.

The main base has negative storage space, meaning I don't even need a single vault.

Hit next turn until all your gals are panicking wrecks. Finish the last guy when you feel they had enough panic rolls.

Didn't really test it but it should train bravery since it seems triggered on panic/berserk and is always a flat 10 bonus.

Only 2, lost it both times since it was just being built and is in middle of fucking north america which seems to be an invasion magnet.

I never really cared about defense rating because I rather have a few stationed hands with high explosives, super shotguns and a tank.

The defense on all my bases is purely a side effect of those specific buildings having it as a secondary attribute. Those missile silos are there mainly as a test, I'm assuming defensive value of over the max enemy ship hitpoints is enough to stop all but the luckiest attempts. I think there are also ground assaults which supposedly don't care about that but never had one.

Could be, never really cared about bravery since killing enemies restores tons of morale, and there's tons of enemies.

Rangers: They're pretty amazing, but swords aren't without modding support. Don't get me wrong, I love swords, but on anything over Veteran, they're just too risky to make real use of (they put you out of position, miss a bit too often, and don't do anywhere near enough damage to offset the downsides). However, you can build stealth Rangers that absolutely DOMINATE the battlefield.

Specialists: Personally, I think they're basically useless. However, if you really hate mechanized units or you really have to have a ranged medkit, they've got their uses. They're hardly the best class in the game though, easily the weakest IMO (gunslinger Sharpshooters in vanilla are surprisingly excellent actually). Grenadiers almost certainly take the cake as the best class, of course (discounting Psi Operatives).

Concealment/shotgun rangers are the real deal. You should always have one as a scout if nothing more. Any rifle-built sharpshooter will gain a huge edge with such a ranger on the roster and he can drop absolutely massive rapid fires from concealment to finish off a big-bad.

Swords unfortunately don't offer much reward for the risk involved but hey if you think they're cool and you're winning missions don't let anybody tell you you're not playing right. Lots of people here probably get bored of running 2 grenadiers and just flattening the map to win everything.

Not sure if im the only one. But i never played original xcom. until a year before the new XCOM came out for PC last year or 2. And i HATED the new xcom and even enemy within with the long war mod. It just sucks the stupid cinematic deaths and kills. i also hate the abilities, and the having 2 turns a round thing.

I do not even want to torrent the new one.

OpenXcom with mods is WAY WAY better. And i dont have nostalgia goggles cause i never played it back in the day.

Havent played since day 2 of alien hunters because of an unholy streak of computer trouble potentially involving gypsy curses and i have two questions.

So blacksite refers to the story mission, you're thinking of facility assaults. Its feasible, just not easy because on legend the first alien facility can spawn farther away on the map. You really have to prioritize making new contacts if you want it to work, which can be tricky while also juggling early game pursuits like engineers, supplys, intel, and getting a GTS and AWC up. Basically its not going to just happen, you will actually need to shift your focus to make sure it happens.

Frost bombs are extremely powerful, I would say yes, though I personally don't have to much experience using them. Certainly on any mission without a super strict time limit they are worth it early game, and then once you hit mid game they will always be good.

Think I'm finally gonna do a modded playthrough of X2 that actually changes the gameplay. All I've got under my belt right now is a finished Commander ironman (my first campaing) about 3 botched legendary attempts, and a legendary ironman that is currently at full gauss weapons, plated armor, all the special ammo and grenades I could want, and about to start pumping out plasma weapons with a healthy roster (probably on track to victory, only a matter of time).

What have you guys tried in order spice up the X2 formula in terms of gameplay? Any collection of mods that you have found to make an interesting expericne?

I just discovered the hard way that having at least 9 soldiers in your squad completely fucks up the spawn. Landed on top of all the enemy pods in a supply raid, then spawned right next to the extract in the next mission with the VIP being literally in the corner of the other side of the map.

Is there a way to get around this problem? I prefer bigger scale engagements with huge pods.

A Better Advent to add a lot of variety to the game, and make it more difficult. Grab some timer extension/removal mods if you take it, since there's actual engagements which go on for a prolonged time

The PJ one, which stands for Projectile(i guess) controls, well, the projectile. If you open it you'll get a new window with a bunch of projectile elements, usually the first controls the projectile itself, others control other things like the sound and stuff. Anyway, the first will usually say something like "Main_Beam - Hit/Miss" in the first line, and in one of the lines below it says Muzzle Socket Name, and in this case it says the socket is "gun_fire". That is what controls where the projectile is shot from.

That said, the projectile archetype doesn't control all the effects that play when a weapon fires.

Other effects are set up on the animations themselves, in the case of weapons, they usually have a specific unique animation for that weapon that plays the effects. So, you go to the animation which is in this case in under weapons under packages and so on, and you open the animation and you get the animset editor or something.

Which is divided in a million windows and tabs and stuff, at the top left window it has a tab that says "Anim" and these are the animations inside this animset, you pick one and if it has an anime effect, it will say on the model window with blue text(sound and other things have different colors), so in this case it has a muzzleflash.

So, on the bottom left window you go to anim sequence and it will have a notify, open it up and it'll say what particle effect it plays, when it plays and on what socket it plays it. When it plays it is very easy to change, you can just click on the name of the effect on the model window and drag it around.

Sockets are set on the socket manager, the red icon at the top, you click it and it opens the socket manager window, where everything should be self explanatory, you click new socket, then it asks you what bone you want it to be parented to, and then the socket name, and then it creates it.

Once the socket is created you can just drag it or rotate it around in the model window to where you want it to be.

So in my case, for that shotgun i just basically made extra sockets, moved them around so they're on the barrels, and then on the projectile manager i duplicated the ones that control the projectile itself and then made them use the other 2 sockets. ezpz

I was thinking about some kind of Kingsguard for the alien rulers to spawn with, and some others that will probably go under massive changes before actually being made. I've also got a babby chryssalid that's technically working but doesn't want to attack, so I'm debugging that.

Before you asked, I already fixed the floating. I'm reinstalling the SDK right now so I can't tell you everything, but I think I took out poison and added mobility citing that they were too young for poison glands. Every other stat is probably going to change before release.
