rixels are rotated pixels. It's when the pixels in the image are actually rotated so they look like diamond shaped.
Mode 7 and rotating the sprite in a native resolution will not have rixels because the pixels will still be aligned with the pixel grid, they will still be squares.

>>
Why would you ever use pixel art for sprites if you're not going to make it so the composed image is also pixel art?

It's like making a figure meticulously carving lots of different pieces and then sloppily gluing them together and painting them.
>>
>>147555353
because once you reach a low enough res, it's easier to do pixel art
>>
>>147555063
Because normies will see ANY pixel art as a retro old school game. Even if it has lighting, bloom, mixels, rixels, gradients, and any other shit that modern devs add to their pixel art.
>>
>>147555446
Except then adding mixels, rixels etc. is actually not low-res at all.
>>
>>147555182
Ah, I see. Thanks for the info.

So what would be the best way to work around this if you're using low res art? Would it be to upscale everything so it's higher resolution?
>>
>tfw you're too retarded to work out simple parallax scrolling, AND posted in the last dead thread because you missed the new thread links.
>>
see: filename
>>
>>147554750
It's pretty simple actually.
4Chan's API provides a json document for each thread:
a.4cdn.org/vg/thread/147553724.json

Program parses each reply, validates it, grabs the image if it passes and then stuffs everything into its own HTML file. HTML is converted into a PNG. I manually post it here, but that takes less than a minute. Whole process takes about 2 or 3 minutes. Only manual thing is updating the CSS.
>>
>>147555541
Render the entire scene and upscale in post. That's all you have to do.
>>
>>147555663
Both are garbage. If you need to rotate, either suck it up and draw frames yourself or don't use fucking pixel art.
>>
>>147555541
You make all the art in its native resolution. 1 pixel = 1 pixel. You make the game, the game window, and everything related to the game in its native resolution, 1 pixel = 1 pixel.

Only then after everything is in its native resolution, you can upscale the viewport of the game so that it stays pixel perfect.

This is the reason it confuses me as to why people don't make their pixel games pixel perfect. Not only is it easier to work with it when everything is native resolution, but it looks better too.
>>
>>147555352
And you are right.

No, it's because if you are rotating a "pixel" from a square into a diamond it is not being treated like a pixel at all. The bloody SNES had hardware to rotate sprites, but it sure as hell didn't rotate the pixels of the display themselves.

Java sucks but libGDX is pretty good if you're gonna use Java. Biggest issue you'll find with Java is bullshit with either packaging the JRE (or whatever the right term is, it's been a while) with your game or expecting the user to install it beforehand

Game Maker language is close to scripting but you'll still have to learn the mindset you need to program. After that you can try and learn C# or other "real" languages. If you've already trained your brain to think in code then you'll have a much easier time.
>>
>>147563854

>>
>>147563804
Yeah it can be 100% code if you want it to be. There's drag and drop actions to help out beginners, but each action has equivalent code.

I've never felt limited by Game Maker, but I also only make 2D games.

The knightgame I'm working on is all in Game Maker, and it has random level generation, a pretty decent inventory system, etc. and none of that is pushing GM to its limits by any means.

GM is basically worthless for 3D though.

This is one of the latest games released by Digital Homicide Studios, all of who's games are notable for their extremely negative reviews.
According to SteamSpy, this game has sold ~20,000 copies. Assuming most of those were during the recent Steam sale, Digital Homicide Studios earned a profit of roughly 5 to 6 thousand dollars.
Even if your game is absolute garbage, you can make a decent amount of money by just putting it on Steam. Good luck /agdg/!

I evolved another creature with my genetic algorithm. This relentless motherfucker here might only have a single neuron in its brain but it seems to be enough.
I feed a sine wave into this creature's neural network from a single input, and it's up to evolution to translate that into some kind of locomotion.
Most creatures die out because they end up spinning in circles, but this one has a pretty cool system of counterweight and side limbs to even things out.

I suck at maths, and I don't know half a thing about logarithms, so take this with a grain of salt: you don't need to know all this shit to program. You can always look things up when you need to use advanced math.

Here's some advice if you actually want to solve this: Break it down into small parts.
Look up primes. Look up logarithms. Write code that prints out the log of prime 2. Then use a loop to do that from 2 to n. Then sum up all the results and print the sum. Then calculate the ratio and print it.

What's your answer to Problem 1? If you used a loop there you should have a decent place to start, assuming the course you're taking isn't horribly bad.
>>
>>147566575
I know what they are, I just don't think I have enough under my belt to write that program. I'm really just getting started and that scared me. I mean, the class lightly covered the if else and while conditionals, I don't know how to do it with just that.

Mixed sizes of pixels.

Imagine you have some graph paper, and each square is a pixel. Imagine you divide one of the squares into quarters, and colour in each section a different colour.

You now have 2 sizes of pixels, thus, mixels.

We've seen so many indie hits come out of it because indie devs have talent independant of the engine they're using. Many of them stick to GM because they probably grew up messing around with it and that's what they know.

We know that neurons form networks based on random branching (locally), and are subsequently modified based on their activity (as well as other processes).
Neural networks obviously don't do everything the brain does, but they do share core similarities in how they work.
>I called those meme topics because everyone treats them like the be all end all solution for many problems
I don't know anyone who actually thinks that way. I've seen far more of the opposite:

Neural networks aren't a meme; "neural networks are a meme" is a meme.

Confession time

I've made multiple games already, but I still don't know how to code.
At first I tried to learn but it's just so easy to find some chunks of good code on the internet that I never felt the need to learn more. When I get bored of searching I sometimes buy some stuff on the Asset Store.

I still know some basic stuff so I can tweak the values of the scripts I find, but sometimes I would get frustrated because I find the perfect script but it's too complex for me so I have to look for something else.

What should I do? I can't continue like this, it feels wrong but at the same time I really don't want to start over the Unity tutorials and do some baby shit games while I could do way better in terms of design..
>>
>>147568307
In GM you have to put in alot of effort to do certain 3D effects. In Godot, you can simply instance a 3D scene in the the 2D engine, so it renders your shit in 3D and puts it directly in your 2D.

You can imagine this woud come in handy for a Diablo type game for example, where you want to make the environments with 2D art, but have 3D characters that rotate in the direction they're moving.

My AI is starting to prove inflexible and ineffective. Wasn't originally designed to understand that there could be dangerous tiles and various other complications. Tacking an understanding for harmful tiles has resulted in it often getting stuck in a single area, waiting for the player to come to it instead.

Abandoning attempts at repairs for now. Going to try and get shops working for the Overworld. Thoughts on battle damage being persistent in a tactical rpg, meaning you have to heal after a battle?

This 100%. Way too often people see something unfamiliar and mathy and just go "Nope" without even really looking at it.

You've described the correct approach though. Break it into parts, identify what you don't know, and then learn what you don't know.

In this case, he wouldn't have to necessarily even know what a logarithm is, just that he can compute it with log() or something. But if you turn your brain off when your eye hits it you wouldn't even know that, because your picture of the problem would just be "uhhh hard"

I always wondered why old 3D games had jittery models. Turns out the vertices were being snapped to integers while rendering. And I'm learning how to make shaders, so I made a simple shader to emulate that effect. The snapping happens while the model moves and while the camera moves, so it looks authentic.
I will post the code in the next post.

my thought so far is:

#1) some kind of match 3 game where you identify the pieces by listening

#2) a game where you have like 20 cows, and you have to listen with your mouse to figure out which ones is possessed by aliens

#3) a maze/escape game where you're followed by a creature you can only hear. to see it you have to stop moving. but if you're not moving you can't hear it. (sound weird)

>>147553976
2D arrays are great, they're the fastest way to access something on a modern computer. I'm not sure I understand why you're looping over and copying the array? Perhaps elaborate on what you're doing and what your goal is. If you're just looking for a specific value it'd be way faster to just do a linear search. Even better (if you can sort it) would be a binary search. If what you want to do is copy every element faster it's a marginal improvement but if you have a memcpy (cfunction) equivalent they tend to be very efficient at copying.

I don't really see when you'd want to copy every element in an array like that though. Wouldn't you just want to reference it?
If all you're doing is accessing the array then the 'copying' (cpus rarely actually copy stuff if it's just intermediate value use) isn't such a big deal if you just make sure those 100-200 times happen close to each other and the size of the array is less than maybe 64k (cpu L1 cache size).
So yeah maybe this helps you get an idea of how to make it more efficient.

Glad you're still chugging away at this after all this time.

I have one suggestion: the lighting effects are really neat in your game but the parts where it's dark lack interest somewhat because there's not much of anything to look at. This is fine sometimes but I think if you made a bunch of different bioluminescent scenery objects and scattered them about in choice locations then your game and its dynamic lighting would pop a lot more.

I don't know, but retro game consoles have a synthesizer chip for audio, so it's not just making one tone at different notes. You have to program in the different sounds. So one soundfont isn't going to do that.

If you have money, you could always get/learn to use a proper music sequencer (i.e. FL Studio) and something like https://impactsoundworks.com/product/super-audio-cart/

Why would you make a half-assed cash grab instead of going all out?

Picture this.

A game where you open loot crates. You get a couple free loot crates every day when you log in. Each loot crate has a rarity between common and legendary, and a special godly rarity. The usual crates contain procedurally generated loot, and the godly crates have an increased chance to generate a brand new loot which makes your copy a special unique foil loot.

There is a limit on how many free crates you get per day but the first few days you get to open a couple more. You can buy loot crate loot crates for cash, which contain 3 loot crates of a random rarity and one guaranteed uncommon or higher.

Loot parts, loot crate parts and loot crate loot crate parts can be crafted by breaking down 5 respective items of the same rarity, letting you craft a higher tier item. Godly/Unique crates and loot can't be broken down. Players can trade these parts as well as loot, loot crates, loot crate loot crates, and there are leaderboards for those who collect many loots, many unopened crates, those who open many crates per day, those who have many duplicate loots, etc.

game has a tile based map. I've stored the tile data in a 2d array. Units only have knowledge of tiles in sight radius and use that for a number of things, one of them being path-finding in this game.
What units do is only know whats in sight radius-> get a destination outside sight radius-> assume that anything that they don't see is open space that they can travel-> calculate pathfinding on that assumption -> update pathfinding as they see more.

This leads to some dumb units, but purposefully dumb units.

Code wise, each unit queries the real map and copies over only the data that is in sight radius and has the rest at null.

This isn't really slow at double digits of units but it starts to get bad past that and the game can have more than double digits.

P.S. would you guys prefer for me to encode your ip address via some one-way function, so you don't have to share it, or would you rather i make it available on windows first?

I intend to make it a nice game even if the theme is absolutely retarded. Maybe if I make it fun enough, people will follow me and look into my other projects when the time comes.

All my games will be pretty aggressive/violent/gory anyway. I don't think I'm gonna lose a huge chunk of the audience who'd play my games with a south park style product like this.

That's when you'd do it, once you have your final transformed vertex position you just round them to integers.

I prefer it in sequels when you keep your arsenal from the previous game, although maybe toned back a bit.

X5 did this really well, they just straight up give you the Fourth Armor if you start as X, which means you aren't completely fucking useless out of the gate.

Games like God of War 2 are huge offenders of just ripping all your shit from you and it sucks and it's annoying.

But let's be honest, the only real way to play shovel knight is on the 3DS, which it is pixel perfect on.

Well the game right now is about timing the length of your jumps properly. Miss a platform and fall into the "lava" and you die. I don't know how the game would get "faster". Faster in what?

Rixels are when your rendering resolution is bigger than your sprite resolution, and each fake "pixel" in the sprite becomes a rotated rectangle instead of just being a new pixel interpolated from the old ones.

Mode 7 could not go above the resolution of the console. Mode 7 did the way on the left. Modern fake-pixel fangames do the way on the right, which is ugly.
>>
>>147590871
Not that anon but possibly a scrolling screen or the jumps charge up faster so they are harder to hit correctly

Looking pretty good! I think the head might need to tilt upwards slightly as it moves forward, the chest seems like it's too thick towards the front, and some work needs to be done on consistence with the legs from frame to frame... but other than that it's a really solid start. The overall motion of it looks great.

yes, a drawing a did mostly by accident in junior high (I made some random lines, then I was like "oh if I cross off this and this and I draw an eye here etc. it's a dinosaur thing")
otherwise, no
it reminds me of comic strip characters put through an autism filter
it's also placeholder art, but I may come back to it for my next game
also the attack appears to show up for one frame because of the settings I used recording it, in the game it's active for around 7 ms and has a cooldown of around 10 ms (it's inexact because it's based on a variable used by the engine so the game doesn't behave really weird when it's short on resources, and the timers are based on it are modified once per frame, and the engine variable is modified on some time scale I'm not sure of; I just know it keeps things fairly smooth)

apparently the 3 broken enemies were clipping through the ground by a few pixels so they couldn't move. Make the platforms shake and crumble with time. Like "This has to shake 10 times for it to fall down", so the shaking will get faster the more you go on. Also, make the number of shakes the same for all platforms of a same type, that way people tend to learn unconsciously to count the shakes to death.

I dunno it depends on what your quests are going to require.

In typical "fetch quest" you'll probably need some kind of hashtable of monsters/items and then some kind of counter, and a boolean for complete.
>>
>>147592591
You're already doing better than many released games.

Not like that's an accomplishment

Definitely some good ideas here, but like I was suggested, the arms would look better with more than one pixel, which could give you more freedom with the hands

How is it going to be animated?

It looks pretty good, maybe a bit flat I guess. that's not a huge issue though. I't probably ditch the teal and dark blue on the belt, or make them more pronounced. They're supposed to be suspenders but it'll be hard to see at the intended size.

I broke mine into Task building blocks, so I can add them together and add more Tasks later if I want. It's pretty simple and doesn't allow things to get super interesting, but it gives a wide enough variety. I could add "visit this location" task, "use this item on this object at this time" task, etc. if I wanted.

When I finish a quest or kill a monster, I look through all the quests and update their status. When I talk to an NPC, the dialog stores a quest flag, and I check the flag and update the pending quest if it's the active one.

you have to spend months learning how to program regardless of it you use your own engine

what you're thinking of is spending months learning how to write your own engine (which is on top of the learning how to program and making actual games).

Maybe do some programming exercises, then start in GameMaker Studio
