This has probably been asked numerous times in the past and google doesn't give a good answer on this issue that I've run across in EU4.

Essentially, I'm playing a custom nation that is part of the Japanese culture group with Shinto as the religion, which must always be a Noble Republic (the idea is that the nation is formed from the right and powerful non-samurai who ran overseas with a daughter of the shogun of the time's minor branch families and has been using them as the basis of a puppet government since then).

From writing that you may have an idea on the issue I'm facing now: the Western Trade modifier. Is there any way of removing this modifier as a custom nation? The big penalty to missionary strength makes it impossible for me to convert anyone right now, and what I've googled up seems to point towards it being a Japan as a nation only option.

By 1944 when i had dealt with commies USA+UK had stationed 8k fighters and an unbeatable navy in the channel. i tried to cheese it by landing 1 million troops in scotland but they had ~3 million troops in britain, including 300k men in the fucking tiny islands above scotland. No idea what happened with your ai, did they randomly send all their divisions overseas or lose them in naval battles/invasions?

Because a bunch of bulky equipment slows down horses (especially loading, unloading, and in terms of logistics) more than a human.

They had some but the amount they could carry and the amount of ammunition they could bring was significantly less.

To put it another way, virtually all the German army was accompanied by horses. You could march with the horse while its pulling as much shit as possible, or you could strip off 90% of what it was pulling and ride it to get somewhere much faster.

There's both softness/hardness and armor/piercing.

66% softness = you suffer 66% damage from soft attack and 33% damage from hard attacks.

50 armor = if the enemy has less than 50 piercing you deal 50% more damage and take 50% less. If the enemy has more than 50 piercing then no change.

This is basically the same between HoI3 and Hoy4. The difference is that divisions could have 5 brigades in HoI3 so you needed at least 20% of your division as armor to get a bonus, In HoI4 the same division can get a bonus with only 5% of their division being armor. And the AI is too dumb to build AT.

Not at all. The US army starts out quite small, and won't have the time or economy to really churn out much for the first couple of years. You should focus on building a small cadre of light tank divisions, probably with armored cars (if mexico has armored cars - they may not.) since you can't get motorized infantry. Even LARM LARM will be pretty okay - you just want speed to cover the vast amount of land in the US before they can react. Your cavalry will also help with this, though don't focus on it.

Anyway, if you can declare in the first 2 years and have say 5 or so of these LARM divisions with a couple dozen infantry divisions, you can definitely stage some encirclements with the former, and while you won't be able to have a stocked front line with your infantry once you push in deeper, if you're quick enough the US will not be able to form an effective line of their own, either.

As for targets, you should obviously grab the West coast. The rockies are not critical and should not waste your time. It's really not important to going any further north than denver in that area. You should also advance eastward and northeastward, along the gulf and through the deep south, so that you eventually reach the eastern seaboard and great lakes with each of these drives. capture all the cities around - these should not be snake advances, you should use a couple speedy tanks to clean up your supply lines when necessary, plus it denies the US IC. Eventually, you'll just overwhelm them.

I found it surprisingly easy to beat the U.S. as Mexico - after taking advantage of their low division strength at the war's outset and overrunning them at the border, they never could really manage a serious counteroffensive. Within a year or so they surrendered.
