Based on the discussion a while back on who was a permanent party member.

This is a chart of characters who have been Rance's party members in at least 3 canon games.

Now there are a few things here.

Sill is considered a party member in 01 because even though she's not in battles she's working closely with Rance and following him.

Likewise Feliss is down as a party member in IV. She gets summoned by Rance a fair bit and takes part in a lot of the things and is an active member of the group.

Shizuka is down as a party member for Sengoku because the History blog post for her had her Sengoku appearance down as canon.

Rick joining the party in Quest however is unlikely to be canon given it happens in the same patch that let's you recruit Am so I didn't include it.

Here's a thought, why don't they just jump around.

01 to 5D to 03 to VI then chronologically from there. The jump from 01 to 5D isn't that big and the characterization is the same. They're both mini-adventures for Rance, when compared in scale to the other adventures and this way you give a good introduction and get the troublesome middle game out of the way.

Next you go with 03 because it sets up thing with Patton and give introduction to Kanami and the Kanthom gang which allows you to go to VI.

02 is left out sadly, but I don't think the gameplay of II will make it. If you have to put it in, maybe after 5D but before 03?

Checked the wiki, aside from a weird generic that's on the progress report (Tanegashima Shin), the biggest I can find is Yamanaka Kojika who starts at 11 and caps at 45, making a 34 level gap.

1) There are some exploits which involve using the ultra-fast speed of 2 Ninjas to switch out your units to get more attacks in per enemy attack than is usually possible. I do not know the details of these.
2) Monks are necessary because Convert Action maximises your damage.
3) You MUST savescum to get extra captures, allowing you to up Rance's level and acquire an optimised team of generics.

Really though, if you're going Ran route, you've got nothing to worry about, it's without doubt the easiest route in the game (ok... MAYBE KTM is easier). As for Tenshi, even though you're going Ran and won't get Seigan, you might as well just keep them alive so that you don't end at war with with places like Iga before you've entered a route.

Since anon is going Ran, I'd suggest being insanely tactical and let the Tenshi Sect conquer Kyo before vassaling them, hence making a barrier between you and the rest of the country, but I doubt there's any real need to do it... there's no need for optimal play here.

Get some lube, you're gonna spend about 30 turns sitting on your ass and fapping because barely anything happens in the fucking route. I think it's universally agreed that it's the worst real route in the game.

Oh, come to think of it, as much as I shouldn't be spoiling you. I strongly recommend not conquering Tenshi in the Ran route, if you're only using auto-saves, the Ran route can become unwinnable if certain events happen at bad times.

The DK route always pisses me off because of how little effort I feel that they put into it. Pic related, but there's so much else that shows that they just didn't try.
1) Despite how much they go out of their way to tell you to just quit, the route isn't even that hard if you've got Battle Permits. Heck, if you really know what you're doing, it's not too hard without them either.
2) Anyone can totally annihilate Xavier's unit, despite him being a demon like Kentarou's unit.
3) Not even Rance can annihilate Kentarou's unit (or even hurt Miki, for that matter).
4) The castle battles in the original Shimazu provinces are the exact same as they were in the True route.
5) The route can become unwinnable if you closed the gate on Takuga and Xavier conquered them.

Thanks, I've been meaning to double check that. The only reason that I put that waning their is because most commanders can't be captured from their original house until you've seen all of their events with the house, so I speculated that the Shikibi and Ran event might cause some trouble.
