I like the border, it's cute, but the viewport is way too big. Make the sidebar 20 wide, and make the viewport 58+2 wide. Then make it a bit shorter, 16+2 tall is good. Then you have 6 lines of message log, and some extra space for the sidebar so that people can play in 80x24 terminals (widely considered standard). If possible, allow expansion so that people can play with huge viewports if they so please.

I am not familiar with ruby, but I feel like this is a curses problem. I don't know if it's just my system, but border, player, and monsters flash every turn. It's also very slow.

This is crucial, HJKLYUBN should move you in a direction until interrupted. The qualifications for that interrupt should be

Look at how other roguelikes with curses displays handle redraws.
I don't know any roguelikes made in ruby, but I'm pretty sure roguebasin has a list of roguelikes by programming language, so check there for any curses-using ones.

There's also fcrawl, it's written in python, but it may be similar since it's also an interpreted language. fcrawl redraws much faster- it's still slow, but it also doesn't flash.

Now there's a self sustaining firewall around this thing because apparently it's got such frequent and massive spore output that it's spreading fast enough to keep the fire going, but any fire that gets any closer is smothered by spores one or two turns later. I can't get close enough to consider throwing an explosive in there without taking heat damage and my ranged skills aren't good enough to reliably shoot it from a safe distance. Wound up just leaving it like that to go loot the bunker, is it worth going back and killing that thing or should I just leave it in the fiery prison I've manage create around it?

Eh, I don't mind them that much. They scratch my pyro itch cuz I like to just burn them all. Plus it's better than just fighting zombies all the time. Fungaloids can spawn and reproduce up to 100 maptiles from a fungal tower.
And a single spore if left alive will create a single fungaloid, which will continually spawn spores which will continuously evolve into fungaloids which will continuously evolve.

Works great now. And it actually looks really nice with the border/coloured LOS features.

Another thing I noticed about redrawing:
Some things don't update immediately, I assume this is because the screen seems to only redraw certain things on player input, you should change it to make monster death and other things "force" redraws. So, for example, you kill a goblin, the space he was in looks empty, but the goblin who was behind him is actually standing there! You don't know this until you try to move into that square. It's very weird.

Also the low HP effect doesn't appear until you take another action, which can be really odd with the regen per turn(you go down to low HP, then on your next turn you heal out of it while killing a monster, then you immediately go back).

In a roguelike, you're meant to redraw the screen every turn, which is already a lot less of a performance impact than redrawing it every frame (16.6... ms @ 60fps, or 6.94... ms @ 144fps), so if you're noticing that the game is slowing down when the screen redraws, it's not because it's being redrawn every turn, it's just that the redrawing function, or indeed the entities it is in charge of drawing, are extremely inefficient.

I haven't taken a look at the code, and I'm not sure I would understand it if I did, on account of my not knowing any Ruby at all, but I find it very likely that it's simply because the Ruby interpreter can't keep up. Coincidentally, this is why games made entirely in Python generally don't go very far.

yep. I copied the code from the "extended_firestarter" and applied it to every source of fire available. Even matches and refillable lighters.

Works the same way, do not try to light shit on fire at 0/1 skill because it'll take an hour and half an hour respectively. At skill 2 it takes around ten minutes and at skill 3 5 minutes.
I suggest just crafting some bindles/makeshift slings to get it to 1 survival right at the start and get to two using another quick recipe like atlats.

Replace with ?Enchantment. ?Enchantment lists all the weapons, armours, and rechargable devices in your inventory as well as -(remove curses) if you are cursed. Add more two school necromancy spells, specifically necromancy/poison and necromancy/hexes.

Rework most of the conjurations spells so that they aren't "shoot the dude with a black beam." Make the level 9 conjurations more unique and take a few turns to amp up like tornado. Firestorm should make a small localized storm of flame rather than dumping a large amount of fire and elementals on a dude. Stuff like that.

I tried to put the "no joke items" it in the mainline with coolthulu's help, but Grenade was strongly against it and it never reached the pull stage.

Fighting a catoblepas, death yak, and polyphemus, who all hit really hard, at the same time when you're a flimsy octopode is a bad idea. Standing in the calcifying cloud is another bad idea. Tabbing straight through the several turn petrification process is outright trying to kill your character, because you know you are petrifying and willingly ignore your several chances to use a consumable to prevent CERTAIN death.

Just tacking on 'oh well I knew it was my fault, we all make mistakes, am I right guys?' is like putting a vase precariously near the end of a table then picking it up with both hands and smashing it into the ground, then shrugging and saying 'shoot that was totally my fault, I could have stopped that.

The Dynamic Spawn options only affected zombies spawning via noise, I thought, and it's off by default anyway.

I think keeping one item to a letter and making letters temporarily static would be a huge improvement.

It means that you can unify w/t. You don't need t when w has the full selection of items.

It means that, with an adjust command, you can effectively hotkey items. Say I want my weapon and bow to be easy to swap between? Put the weapon on w and the bow on q. Then I can ww or wq depending on which I want, or if I want to unwield for some reason.

Has anyone used a rune sword? It seems okay against things that vampiric works on, but I'm not sure if it will get good enough for endgame monsters. In theory shieldmaster is one of the better classes for it since you can wield it two-handed and use a shield, so I tried it out.

You pretty much have to try to get yourself instakilled. You know what a new threat is capable of by examining them. You don't gain an advantage by pausing between every step to search for traps. There's no convoluted hoops to jump through to use-ID items. You don't need to drop your items before fighting a corrosive/burning/shattering enemy. Etc.
Stuff like this makes the game a hell of a lot more approachable, while still allowing them to keep the game challenging where it matters (getting murdered in combat.)

He is a good god for characters who don't want to invest ANY experience into having a good god. He saves you valuable experience in both stealth and dodging and buffs your offense in exchange for no fire. Pretty good guy and shadow form isn't bad if you don't mind investing for it.

I remember watching some melee dude who used very heavy armor with Dith and he still managed to have like 6 pips of stealth. Also shadow form provides torment immunity and 50% overall damage reduction, it's a great escape panic button.

I haven't tried, but you could probably train throwing, use sleeping or paralysis needles and become an endgame stabber who gets away with using medium to heavy armor. I'm going to give it a try one day.

I was thinking in reverse, you have good armor so your stealth is low and you use Dith to gain stealth and become able to stab. If it fails you can fight back with moderate safety. The stealth is really great for defense, but melee guys don't get to abuse the shadow as much as casters, which is the biggest draw after the umbra. Besides the weapon though what else would he be switching to? The head and maybe the amulet aren't so critical that keeping them cursed is a bad thing. He'll have to get those 8 ring slots cursed though. Remove curse scrolls aren't exactly rare though. Scrying is a great ability but it won't save anyone who already got themselves into trouble. Ash has no mid-battle support or panic buttons, besides passive clarity. The skill boosts are pretty good too.
I have never used transfer knowledge. If you trained a skill it's for a reason, so it's pretty strange to want to move the experience to a different one.

All the branches have gotten significantly nastier over time, new threats have been introduced to spruce up the Dungeon, Depths happened, lots of "free" XP has been cut out, Abyss got a host of ~fun~ enemies exclusive to it, and so on.

Shadowcasting is a fair bit harder to write than raycasting, but it is faster and produces nicer results.

The one disadvantage it has is that there is no simple way of guaranteeing symmetry. But for that you can just use raycasting for monsters with some trick like

Nah. Dispel magic should work like this:
Every buff has a default dispel chance of 100%-(BuffsRemoved^2*5%) or so.
Certain buffs will have a different base %, so Weaponmastery/ManaBranding will have 70%, Giant Strength will have 25%.
Invulnerability should still be 100% and cause paralysis on removal.
This way the serpent actually has to spam dispel if you have 7 or 8 buffs, and obscenely rare shit like Giant's Strength will pretty much always resist it, especially if you have another buff.

You enforce the curse by having the item have trade-offs between negatives and positives.
Aggravating items in 'bands do this very well without having to be sticky.
Calris in Sil gets -5 to hit (higher than anything in the game except Grond iirc, maybe mattocks too?) and cold vulnerability in exchange for dishing out ridiculous damage.
The Amulet of Air in DCSS gives you a shitload of useful intrinsics, but also reduces your accuracy (this one is generally considered a very good tradeoff though).

If you want to do sticky curse, of course that's fine, but sticky curse is kind of boring and shitty IMO.

I think this is blue mage and he is absorbing spells from jelly (and so it counts as an attack), and you can get exp from some attacks in poschengband I believe.

How is the dungeon progression supposed to go now? I fired up a character and cleared out dungeon, orc and lair but ended up feeling much too weak to do shoals, swamp or depths, not to mention Vaults.
Should I dive into one of the less dangerous of these branches and hope for pickoffs on weaker enemies or something?

I don't feel like nethack has terribly much replay value.
While it has a lot of cool stuff, it has an equal share of problems (some of which are absolutely huge- and yes this carries onto variants which try to fix stuff). It was fun to play through a few times, but I don't have any particular urge to play it again.

This game looks odd. Default PC is a lich and loading and saving is a character abillity? Does that mean I have save points? Sounds oddly like that isn't permadeath, so I'll try the other default. So I chose the soldier, who has no powers of saving or loading. He starts out with some gear and low HP/HP growth. No idea how that'll impact this game. Looks dangerously similar to a roguelike so far. Still wary.
