Basically. You could also just grab a few good companions and focus on leveling yourself and them up to get to a high level so that trainer is useful. Remember that castles and towns give you T2 troops instead of T1 peasants (though those T2 troops are on the path towards infantry instead of archers/skirmishers, if you care about that).

also a few tips:
-do trading caravans for early monies, I think cossac cites are closest together so it may be a good place
-spend them on good armor, make it your priority so you don't die so easily, starting armors are much worse than in WB and there are guns
-once you get your ok armor go for mercenary job at a nation of your choice, they're more profitable in WB
-check out mercenary camps, they have troops that can be customized which is nice

I have problems with blocking downward but that's because when I move down I tend to move left/right after I move but before I block
So I end up blocking the sides.
Another difficulty with down-blocking is that it seems to sort of throw my brain for a critical .3s to see a stab incoming and then having to block low, where the other ones are much more obvious to me and so don't require as much thought.

I don't have any problems with having to move a bunch up or down for it to actually register, though. That sounds weird.
