You're ranked compared to all the players of that current match. If you're getting gold medals (i.e. being the best on your team) then you're more likely to be more highly ranked. The game will notices that you're excelling compared to your teams and as a result place you higher for your real matches.

Competitive mode is a blessing. I've won all my placement matches so far and have been matched up with competent teammates. I've been playing Reaper the whole time and he is fucking INSANE when you're able to depend on teammates to take advantage of your flank attacks and create reliable defensive lines you can work for sneak attacks.

If you're, say, 0-4, just go Lucio. Do nothing but stay on the objective and heal. You'll probably get 2 gold medals, and maybe a couple of bronze/silver if you're on a good enviro kill map like Lijiang or Ilios. Don't make your ranking suffer from shitty teammates.

Am I playing him wrong? Am I just shit? Should I pick another hero? Feels like I'm constantly getting into situations where we're getting steamrolled and I try and stop it by contesting the payload and no matter who I pick I can't deal with them all on my own and it just contributes to the snowball.

At least my Pharah got better today though. Gold in both elims and I started landing a lot more direct hits. I think I need to pick her up again in between practicing Zarya and Hog, she's a lot of fun.

I just want to get good with some characters besides Zenyatta because as much as I love him homeboy's gonna be straight garbage when D.Va gets buffed if Blizz doesn't do something about him too

Yeah, I get the idea of using it as an alarm, but that still doesn't actually make it good; it can only mark one route into your nest, and at least one of your counters has the ability to just scream UNGA BUNGA ME HATE SNIPER and jump right down your fucking throat, so it's still kind of incredibly useless. The only thing you're gonna do with it is mildly inconvenience someone because now they have to pause for a single second to shoot or step around it, or make them tut and grimace a bit when they accidentally trigger it and realize that they're going to be fighting you at 90% health instead of 100%.
