I also take long breaks between dedicated scoring practice (been playing Deathsmiles on and off for the past 4 and a half years, which is the only game I've tried scoring seriously in), and it usually comes back to me pretty quickly when I decide to start again after a break.

Trying to please everyone never works out. It seems to be especially true for the shmup community because everyone has a different definition of "gitting gud", and trying to meet everyone's expectations is just silly.

Do what you wanna do, play the games that you enjoy. Who cares if so-and-so person thinks that you're not good compared to so-and-so player? I'd imagine that forcing oneself to adapt to a different playstyle than you enjoy is a very easy way to stop having fun with shmups, and what's the point of playing if you're not having fun?

That's exactly why you would value one trick ponies more. If you only have one single excellent score, you get more popular than having hundrets of decent scores. But in the end, the player with hundret decent scores is still better at the genre, which is what really counts.

There are Touhou players with good scores that can't LNB the very same game because they played on a lower difficulty for so long.

That's the case for every player. Every shmup is different, and you always have to memorize the game first.
Even players like SWY first suck at the game if they are new to it.
Shmups are not about fucking reflexes or whatever. They are about memorization, execution and strategy. That's why you can't just simply master one game, and magically become good at the whole genre, like some retards here seem to believe.

I did the Casper run on the spreadsheet, and yes it was Normal mode.

No Death Mode means not triggering suicide bullets in the run, which means not choosing Level 3 five times. And No-EX (or No-Extra as mine says, same thing) means not doing the optional Gorge level (or Canyon, as everyone calls it).

Perhaps there should actually be a better distinction between run types than just "No Death Mode" and "No-EX", since there is a third criteria where one does a No Death Mode -with- EX, resulting in a Hades Castle with Death Mode, but I'm not quite sure what to do for it. Since it doesn't apply to either of the runs on the spreadsheet so far, I don't think it's an issue that needs to be addressed just yet anyways.

I can only judge by what I see, but when you look at Jaimers Youtube channel it's obvious that he plays more than you. You also already spend a lot of time with shmups, otherwise you wouldn't have vids uploaded from 6 years ago and over 2000 posts on the farm, but Jaimers seems to practice harder and doesn't just play Final Fantasy or whatever.
