Here is my "mental justification for it". It's not that your pops know they want marble, it just be more a desire amongst the populace for high quality sculpture/building material. Or they might have experience with marble, just that the one known deposit is too tiny for any real practical use. "Geez, it would be neat if we had a shittonne of this here "bucket of marble"

Took a look at civ's wiki and also saw Gandhi there. Though it's hardly surprising

What is your recommended plan for building defense stations?

Do you wait until mid-game when your weapons are at like level 4 or higher?

Do you spam them all in your core systems, or spread them out?

I make two fortress designs:
1. Four Tachyon Lances+sentinel point defense with that boost that lowers shields and lengthens FTL timer+slows movement speed
2. Eight Advanced Strike Craft modules with that boost that lowers shield and attack speed.

I put #1 near important installations or space ports of important systems (like my main shipyard), then I put #2 as close by as it will let me. I make a ring of these with #2 on the outside.

Unless you have an insane energy surplus, I suggest putting them on systems on borders shared with your enemy. Then just decommission and rebuild accordingly as your borders move.

Design #1 actually help up to one scourge fleet with a rating of 10k (station just had 4.7k)

Any building that produces the type of resource gets the boost. If matching building is not present, no boost.

Capital adds food, minerals and energy so you better put it near fitting tiles and not, say, near science tiles.

There are some blockers that giver research bonus, I only know radioactive tiles on Tomb Worlds for sure.

LMAO it's because they're retarded.
This is how you sector:
>develop planets as you see fit
>advance basic science labs to labs you want established later (physics/social/engineering)
>sector
Personally I put planets into sectors once I have a planetary capital running so there's a Hyper Entertainment Forum built. Also don't build buildings which requires strategic resources not part of the sector or are sourced from other empires.
>>
So is seems stellaris is on its death bed or at least heading there, is there anything that could be added and/or fixed that would save itor at least make it more enjoyable? I'd hate to see paradox just drop it
>>
>>146681710
So, so basically the best way to maximise it is to build around an adiminstration building, right ?
>>
>>146682090
getting your fleet back up to strength is micromanagement hell if you have multiple 20k+ fleets. I hope paradicks would implement a system to automate this
>set your desired fleet strength: battleship/cruiser/destroyer/corvette
>set source planets from where these vessels are acquired
>set rally point to fleets or to systems to rendevous with target fleets so they don't get accidentally ambushed en route.
>>
>>146682090
Well for starters, revamp the entire government and ethics part, throw in diplomacy aswell. That would be a start.
>>
>>146682019
Usually by the time I need sectors, I already capturing alien planets. And put them into sectors.

On rare occasions I put my old planets into sectors as I colonize new one near my capital.
>>
>>146682019
I just stick fresh planets into sectors with research focus and respect tile resources.

Food goes on food, minerals on minerals, power on power, research everywhere else. Works fine.

>But what do we call a form of government that is under de-facto control by the military-industrial complex?

>>
>>146682690
unless you capture them late game when there's some development going on and you're happy with the development it's pure retardation to put an undeveloped planet to a sector

>>146682906
Do you place mines on mineral deposits just because there's a mineral deposit on it? Depending on my empire's needs I either build a power plant or research lab over it. I'm usually overflowing with resources by the time I'm capturing planets anyway so I just build research labs and power plants on newly captured planets to offset the research penalty incurred per planet and pops you acquire.
>>
>>146682090
It's dying because paradox is shitting the bed with 1.2. The only thing paradox can add to save it is a unified direction and non retarded balancing decisions.

RIP Research. If you want to prevent other empires from encroaching on your territory or if you want to cockblock them from joocy resources/planets it's better to establish frontier outposts on them until you have enough research labs to mitigate the penalty.

I know Planetary Annihilation: Titans is consodered a letdown compared to what was promised, but the interplanetary and orbital mechanics seem neat and I've kinda got an itch to play a SupCom-like game as well.

Is it worth $7.50?
>>
>>146685346
Kinda this.
Still DW have some problems.
>too much resources
>no refining or producing goods
>population or planet infra don't need any resources
>retarded ship designer
>no real internal politics(no parties, factions, fiefs, guilds)
>terrible goverment system
>ugly races

Thanks, that's exactly what I was looking for.
>>
>>146686171

>>
>>146686319
The resource system is fine. Its the right blend of abstraction and functionality. When you're managing a galactic empire resource refinement is an uneeded step because it can be assumed the planet or mining station handles that step.

Along with a UI update they could make it more clear what resources go to what.
>>
>>146686518

>>
>>146687797
Then you should know there aren't any games that really beat SupCom in the SupCom-like game category.

I'm not looking for one to beat it though, I'm just interested in a potentially okay clone that introduces a fresh spin on it.

IMO, while FA brought some great improvements, you should definitely play through vanilla atleast once, if only to actually learn how to play the game properly. FA's campaign assumes you have a working knowledge of the base game's mechanics and all that entails.

>>
>>146703298
I'm not sure that matters, as long as they're connected somehow it's the same increase in gold (I believe)

But your idea does have its advantages. If the AI was good/you were being invaded by a real player, your cities could easily pump units and quickly get to the defending city.
Iv also noticed it helps with defense to have cities next to each other facing where an army is coming to attack. They'll have to reroute or commence an assault on both cities at the same time, which will require a larger force than they initially intended, and will inflict many casualties on the invading army

In the base game, you could pick pretty much any ethic and government (besides Individualist) and do decently well. Now you are locked into a warlike civ with complete shit for bonuses or a peaceful one that can't conquer shit.

Retard. You systematically go from system to adjacent system, develop planets to your liking, give to sector and never see them again. If you need to colonize more than one planet in a system then do so before you cede that system to a sector.

inb4 Paradox releases some DLC that "fixes" the sector system and expand on governor functionality :^)
>>
This game needs better win-conditions. It's so damn tedious colonizing planets that aren't actually useful just to try and get that meter to tick up just a little bit further, while of course not getting to actually develop these colonies because of the stupid sector system, which will then leave the world undeveloped for the longest time.

Also, sector AI's need to start prioritizing special/unique buildings.
>Oh, you build Entertainment Center to keep those assimilated aliens happy? Fuck-a you, no minerals, energy, or research, so no pops!
>Oh, all those aliens are migrating because they're unhappy? Guess I'll sit here with my thumbs up my ass and let this planet never develop!
If the whole point of sectors is to keep players from having to micro-manage every planet, don't make the ai so retarded that players have to micro-manage anyway, only now at the expense of Influence. Because it's not enough to put an ai in control of these colonies as an auto-pilot, we'll also completely lock out player input to correct any mistakes they notice!

>>146716461
>do this thing that involves you giving up control of your main planets for extended periods of time to retarded AI
AI retardation is nullified if you develop your planets beforehand. Also, storing planets in sectors is good especially for when you win planets in wars and you get those sabotaging homosexuals constantly ruining your buildings. Sector AI will auto repair those for you.
>chewing through influence
You only get -25 influence if you remove a system from your sector.
>>
>>146716841
I forgot to add that your core planets are supposed to be your shipyards and invasion army raising grounds, so not having direct control is not an issue. Non-core planets are for resource, research, and fleet capacity purposes only. If you do otherwise you're stupid.
>>
>>146716841
>-25
Assuming it's on the edge of sector already, and as per >>146716616 you have to add the cost of resettlement. I need to do this all at once without unpausing otherwise I'll need to re-allocate another sector to free up a planet slot which would cost even more.

Basically it's fucked. There's a mod that removes the influence cost for re-assigning sectors and I think I'm gonna go with that. I'd probably be okay if I could just re-settle pops without it being under my direct control. I can fucking build robot pops why can't I resettle existing ones?
>>
>>146717149
>resettling pops
or just allow them to migrate freely. You can't have it all brah you have to compromise. Resettling has its benefits and the game is making you choose between having a lot of planets vs. having direct control of your populations, both having their own benefits.

>Governmental administration is messy and inefficient, even in space.
This is a shitty justification for bad AI.
The only solutions I've seen for dealing with sectors are ways to play around bad AI. These don't actually justify the AI being bad. The player is given this feature (which is mandatory because of inefficiency penalties) and told that it will reduce micromanagement, but you have to micromanage it anyway; that's bad design.
>>
>>146719340
you either micro and reap the benefits (better control) in exchange for tedious gameplay, or you can allow the AI to macro so you can focus on other things (warfare) in exchange for less than optimal governance.

If anything there should be a sector for fleet (ship replenishment, rally points)
>>
>>146719676
Micromanaging isn't an option because of inefficiency penalties. This argument is acceptable (but still doesn't justify bad AI) if we're talking about city governor AI in Civ, but it's nonsense when you're FORCED by game mechanics to delegate control to a badly-programmed AI.
>>

>Micromanaging isn't an option
It is tho. You can make a decent fleet if you have around 12 core planets, which is achievable through research. It is an option if RNG grants you the Core Planets tree early on, but the game requires you to have a certain degree of flexibility so you will have to ditch micromanagement if you don't get it early on to avoid getting encroached upon by other empires.

There's 3 levels of bombardment, but it's a policy you can only change every ten years (in game).

The "full bombardment" policy is the most likely to destroy buildings and civilians. I don't think you can kill them all, though. You can purge them over time once you conquer the planet.

>Too bad that Paradicks have no idea what to do with this game.
They've already outlined what they are going to do with it and it all looks good, particularly the plans for late game. I think their biggest mistake so far was mimicking popular mods (see shitty better battles mod) because they were popular rather doing something better.

But apart from that the new update is a great step forward, particularly since its so soon after launch.
>>

Give them time, Paradox are not know for speedy recovery. The fact the game is this good now is a miracle, normally it takes a decade to reach even this point.

>>
>>146758674
>They can't even copy mods properly in not fucked way.
It works better than the mod though, the issue is that the combat needs to be deeper, which they have admitted and are planning to fix in a big patch focusing just on combat.

They've already been over this, the first few updates are QoL and band aids to serious issues that need fixing like most of the bugs which have been dealt with. After this is over they are doing focused updates on certain parts like diplomacy/combat/sectors to actually expand them.

Leaders are already pretty much gimped shit simply because you do not have enough leader slots to even put governors on all planets and sectors, admirals in fleets and generals in armies.

And on top of that you have to maintain a pool of scientists with various traits if you want a chance of getting the reseearch options you need when you you need them and boost your science output to non-shit levels..

>>
>>146769549
Well I use it CBP and Better CS Diplomacy. I just finished an epic game with both. In fact I think I got the suggestion of using Better CS Diplomacy from a forum thread dedicated to CBP.

My game crashes from time to time, so maybe there's a problem with it and maybe I didn't get the suggestion from a CBP thread. But like I said, I finished a complete game with both of them. Several games actually.

>>
>>146770367
Well I don't use EUI. Maybe that's your problem? Pretty sure JFD civs work for the most part too. Then again, I've had crashing before, so maybe the incompatibility you speak of is that. Overall though, I can start the game and play through it for more than a couple eras.

I'm still playing through some of the changes CBP makes to some of the leaders. I think they are good changes.

Question: Since you are very compatibility minded, do you ever have crashes that happen on the same turn again and again no matter when you reload, as if a specific event is crashing your game? I seem to have that sometimes. It ruins some of my playthroughs.

Crunch time. Software companies tend to put in a lot of overtime as the deadline approaches, due to the nature of all software itself.

Vacations are there to avoid burn-out. I think they streamed their office after releasing an EU4 patch, and everybody was looking very tired and disheveled, much to the chat's concern.

Not this anon, but additionally, we know the size of the trees. Together they are 150% of the size CiV tree.

Seems smaller overall though when you factor in the number of available CiV cultural policies.
>>
>>146814707
Civics in the culture tree are different from policies. They unlock policies, among other things.
The policy system is part of the government system. Each government type has a certain number of slots for policies of a specific type.

The way barbs work in this is that they send out raiding parties, the necromancer one is very overpowered early on. If you cannot remove them the barbs get stronger then go back to their camp.

So I got rolled because it was a bad spawn because of it having desert nearby with an undead camp.

The ai doesn't do that well bellow emperor because of the way barbs work in this, you better hope that the ai with death never goes to war with you or they'll keep turning your land into desert.

Perpentach went to war with me. I was sure that I picked the neutral leader and not the good one, pretty sure Volana will attack me when she can again.
That blue border might be the Bannor then again Angaad is more warlike then just about everyone else.

I am just replaying base Civ IV at the moment on Earth18 and I am getting really frustrated.

I am playing as England but despite my best effort the enemy seems to advance well ahead of me with tech and also build HUGE armies.

Like for every 1 Archer I build the enemy has 10. Even though they only have 1 city and I have 3.

How is it doing this?

Also is there a similar scenario on Civ 5? I just want to play England starting in the UK but the only Earth map I can see starts you in a random location.

I feel like civ games do a lot of experimentation with their artstyle. civ 4 was like this as well, everything was exaggerated as hell, while civ 3 and civ 5 have a more realistic approach, at least with leaders. this one is going for caricatures on leaders, which I feel is a love hate relationship. I've brainstormed a better system, just add another level.
>Core planets directly administered by (you)
>Core systems directly under your control, but with planets administered by appointed governors.
>non core sectors administered by sector administrators
Core planets are determined by who you stick in the governor slot, you can stick your ruler character there now.
Governor administered planets effectively act as core planets, the mechanic is that they effectively extend core world functionality and add flexibility to the system, but also makes leader slots an actual resource, instead of using them to hire fuckloads of scientists to try and RNG the one with the bonus you're looking for. Sector administrators are generated automatically outside the leader pool, and you can spend influence to "fire" one, however the influence cost is included in leader influence cost bonuses. This makes certain govtypes far more powerful.
>>
>>146649941
Fucking Japan every fucking time.

That actually dont sounds half bad.
Add posibility to make governors from generals/admirals(militaryplanets/forge worlds/martial law/pacifications) and add few extra specialized slots based on goverment type(like military gov get few more officers when burecracy few more governors).
Having admirals/burecrtas leading sciecne ships and fleets would be nice to.

Seems like they haven't changed the code since civ4. City spamming was worthwhile because cities only went out 2 tiles.

I think the map might have been a bit too small... only bad thing is once the Sheaim have enough built up cities they get free units from their gates.
Also if units die around their mages they get skeletons from it so its pretty fucked up if the ai gets rolling.

The funny thing is I just had to look up what the deal with republics is now because I kept thinking there was something fucked with my game.

Apparently new candidates are only generated when there's a faction to generate them. This means your starting ruler runs unopposed until you get a new major faction.

Effectively democracies are autocracies if you can remove factions.

>>146931174
I've put a few hours into it, the battles are easily the best part. There's really nothing to city building though, you just eventually build one of everything in every settlement you control, not a whole lot of complexity.

The troop and faction diversity makes battles loads of fun though. There can be a surprising amount of back and forth over territory if you get careless, I've found that a slow and steady creep outward is the easiest way to win. But less interesting.

Influence is the main thing that keeps the game from being fun. Because it feels so artificial, detached from everything else in the game. How you gain or spend influence feels random, decided more on what things needed to be limited or slowed down than by logic. Can't have players expanding too fast, so we better make it cost influence. Can't have players hiring leaders carelessly, so they cost influence. Man it would be so much easier to manage that world if you could just enable a few edicts, but too bad they cost shitloads of influence. Want to join an alliance? Too bad, the influence upkeep is bonkers, better save that for later.
>>
>>146934296
I still can't fucking believe that colonization costs influence now. This basically means you never ever ever can't hire new leaders if you hope to stay competitive early/mid game, which makes starting RNG on leader traits absolutely fucking frustrating.

I can for example understand Sentient AI requiring some sort of next-level breakthrough but it should've been a randomized tree or some shit and most of the 'techs' are literally just Inventions as far as Vicky 2 would care

random tech generally doesnt work unless you have a lot of strategic options so that when one option is closed others are available. Right now there just arent enough techs, the game needs abotu 500% more techs and it needs some basic tradeoffs like long term research vs short term research

>>
>>146939301

>>146939289
No, random tech could work if it applied specifically to 'breakthrough' techs that had a small chance of becoming (permanently) available in your tech tree every month, which you'd be able to see one branch ahead of but might be semi-randomized from the start.
Then you need the Vicky 2 Inventions system for smaller techs (Lasers are ONE tech, Xray Gamma whatever are INVENTIONS ffs it's LITERALLY a problem of technical ability not actual fucking inventions), it is EXACTLY what the randomtech tries to emulate - breakthroughs happening more or less at random.
Fucking hell I am angry, half the techs in game are obviously just political reforms, Xeno Leaders obviously comes from Xeno Voters which is literally just yet another Vote reform.
Then there's the INANELY retarded Monarchist government groups which can spawn heirs, not only of completely different ethnicity (from an Asian twink to some giant WEWUZ? Really?) but of an entirely different fucking dynasty. Bullshit.
