Agreed. The whole thing with Lia was covered up lore-wise. It doesn't make sense that anyone beyond Rance and Sill knew what was going on. I like Menad and Yulan making another appearance + all the monster cameos, but it doesn't make sense.

I'm conflicted about the way they used My Glorious Days. I like where they moved it, but Lia's scene feels empty without it, having played the game this is based on. Another nice touch: everywhere Rance goes after escaping Leazas, the gold bag on Sill's back shrinks as he spends more and more of their money. That's funnier than just leaving it like in the game.

Question for anyone who has done a 5 Star No Bonus run of SR. How do you normally go about capturing Isoroku?

I can never decide with of these tactics is best:
A) Try to grab her at the Oil Field's final battle.
B) Let Owari be conquered up to the castle, and then just let her come to you.
C) Attack Ashikaga at every opportunity, until so many of their units are damaged to the point where Isoroku is forced to appear, preferably in an attack on your turf.

Option A is the only choice that isn't dependent on luck (well, outside of Ashikaga reclaiming their land) but it's the toughest fight you'll ever have against her.
Option B is insanely risky, if you get attacked too many times per turn, you can get a Game Over and you're also betting everything on luck, but if Isoroku does appear, she's yours.
Option C is the middle ground, but sooner or later I can see C just becoming A due to not being able to attack anywhere else.

Y'know, for a pretty fucking absurd challenge run, I'm astounded by how lazy I'm being. I couldn't even be fucking bothered to fight Tokugawa or Imagawa.

Fun facts:
Turn 63 and I still don't have the Battle Permits.
Isoroku died to the Tenshi Sect.
In sharp contrast to my Kenshin Route run, I took Uesugi from Kensai in under two turns (they could barely protect themselves, they had less than 30 commanders before Kenshin was captured).
I'm getting very lucky with regular textbooks, with Rance at all 6s, I'm struggling to figure out who to give them to.
I'm dreading catching Ran, but Niwa is still alive, so it could be ok.
Despite this post, I feel like I'm caring too much about my troops, after all, I'm going the Ran route.

As normal, I'll post my roster and shit in the next post. To recap, this was 5 Star No Bonus, Ran Route, no Footsoldiers.

As for the challenge itself, I'm surprised by how little it added to the difficulty, we always assume that you need 2 Foots in every fight in 5 Star, but it turns out that you don't. If I fought the Demon Army (either on True or DK, Isoroku and Kenshin wouldn't have cut it) or maybe even Mouri then I probably would've felt the difficulty, but for everything I faced in the run, nothing was at all special, expect for my frequent early to mid game lack of money caused by losing more expensive troops (hence >>146599754).

As always, Hara was vassaled without issue.
Ashikaga was the only time where the lack of Foots was a problem (they're always the hardest part of the game), and that's really just because I lacked Shibata's offensive power. I couldn't even reach the final Oil fight until I got Isoroku, I ended up capping her through the random chance of finding her while I was fighting my way to the final Oil battle. Anyway, as is always the case, Isoroku cap=Ashikaga beat, although for the second run in a row, I failed to cap her before trigging Takeda's gourd break, not that that's a problem.
As for the Mikos, >>146435345 sums up my approach, all that was needed to crack them was persistence and a little luck on attacks and insta-kills. I'm starting to think that using your second SAT bonus on Dousan is optimal, she really puts in a lot of work. Thoughts?
Uesugi - trivial as always, Rance puts in some serious work.

As per usual the game was won post-Uesugi (Ran route also helps)

Of course it says. Pikes were revived for the sole purpose of being used in tight formations to beat cavalry. When the battle devolved into a brawl they'd switch to swords. I suggest you to research a little bit more about this.

Yes, pikes were used against cavalry. When the brawl starts your opponent isn't cavalry anymore. In a hypothetical 1 on 1 situation against cavalry you'd still prefer a pike over a sword.

Pikes are much too big to be used by a lone man in general. Of course there are certain situations that they can be useful, but that is besides the point (a fucking glass cup can be useful if the circumstances are good), but you can't swing a pike around fast enough for it to be practical. It is not the same as using a naginata, halberd, or poleaxe in a 1 on 1.

Spears in general were meant to be used for poking things from a safe distance, with the pike being king in that regard due to its massive length. A proper formation could only really have its front toppled by fucking ELEPHANTS. They also had a pretty good synergy at keeping early rifleman safe from meleeing by standing behind them and poking like hell.
However, they suffer the most from being flanked regardless of if they are wielded by a lone mman or a group. The Swiss too care of that through a hardcore training plan that resulted in troops that could turn flanks into new fronts in seconds on the run as they charged at the enemy instead of sitting back in phalanx mode.
