Dominions is a fantasy turn-based strategy game created by two dudes. One of them is a teacher.

The game combines a simple presentation with an extremely wide array of strategic options, including over 2800 units, 800 spells and 300 magic items. Turns are resolved simultaneously, with players planning battles rather than directly controlling them.

It has simplistic graphics but is easily moddable and extremely deep.

Basically, it's an autist’s wet dream of a strategy game.

Summon Tomb Kings and reanimate either chariots (trample) or tomb wyrms (sacred and hard to kill).

there is no redeeming factor in subbing a nation that staled 10 turns from turn 1.

other nations are litterally producing 4 times more gold and production than Pan is;
no turn played means nothing recruited, just 4000 gold and something like 100 resource bottlenecking him.
if someone sub him now by turn 16 he is going to have maybe 6 provinces and about to build a shitty fort, when suddenly his neighbours will have expanded in all the other provinces, with triple the gpt and 2 forts finished and some levels of research too.
taking his lands would be only slightly harder than conquering them if they still had indipendents.

Okay, how exactly do I do that? In the mean time I can give you more examples of how I won. Massed crossbows together with thunderstrikes slaughtered their infantry before they were able to engage. And the addition of Phantasmal Army and Earth meld which made them take even longer to reach my line allowing for more thunder and crossbowing sealed the deal. that's fucking it. remember that is always better to have items forged and doing nothing with them than having 100 water gems, doing nothing with them and cry a lot when you realize you actually need 6 water bottles to raid a province/defend a mage from assasins or a frostbrand to kit a makeshift thug for an emergency, because it will take at least one more turn to craft them and you are going to suffer during that time.

I usually go Ench 5-6 (for horde of skellingtons early aggression/raiding and Rigor Mortis), Evo 7 (Sweet Wind of Death, the slayer of doomstacks, plus shadowblasts/bane fire), while getting Const 4 somewhere on the way for skull staves. Then most players just quit and you win.

It depends on whether you want to go full bless, then probably a demilich or some other guy with a bless that may or may not include two-three of those: W9, D9, N9, B9. If you want to play a rainbow mage, then lich queen is a really good choice. Just go for paths that will get you more cool spells and summons with path access like elemental royalty. One of my favorite builds is awake lich queen with A4E4S6D6. Or you can do A4W24D6N4 or something like that.

Scales are ALWAYS dumped. You don't need them when you have freespawn sacreds and chaff. Trumoil 3, Sloth 3, Death 3, Cold or Heat 3 (Cold is more thematic and will help your guys with cold auras while heat is useful as skellingtons can cross rivers and your opponents usually can't), Luck 3, Magic 3 for cool events that give you +2953 gold each turn. You can dump Luck and Magic a little if you want strong bless.

Always build your first forts as early as possible, and as close to each other as possible. Then build temples only there. Never leave your temples in the open, it's wasted money.

Awake means you don't have to waste gems empowering to get mages and you get extra skellies from the extra domspread. Imprisoned means more points duh.

There are some very easy ways to deal with this.

One: Field a thug capable of killing dryads that won't be seduced. Have him lead your armies. It's a morale check, so make him a sleeper or some shit with a charcoal shield.

2.) Use your patrol dogs to patrol provinces you take to snatch his snatches.

3.) Seduction only works if there is a province to take the commander to. If you approach from multiple directions and take all adjacent provinces, you stop seductions that turn.

- the "debug mod" which just make all spells avaible at the start and give you a super mage to cast them

they are very different spells. Vine ogres are efficient line holders and evo catchers. Call summons wolf-summoning werewolves. These can be given minimal gear to serve as light thugs, or they can patrol for blood hunters, or you can just use it as a remote attack spell, knowing that if you manage to take the province you ALSO get some guys that can sneak out. It's a relatively versatile spell, but of course doesn't get you as much HP/gem as vine ogres.

Basically it went from 11 damage which ignores 60% of protection to 15 damage which ignores 20% of protection.

This was supposed to keep it performing fairly well against heavy infantry while reducing the effectiveness against heavier armor and troops with shields. I can't say how effective it was in practice, since I never played a gane using cronemod.

The problem which cronemod wanted to solve wasn't that crossbows were too good against unarmored units, it was that crossbows were too good against the troops which kate saw as the counter to ranged attacks (i.e. shielded infantry).

Reducing damage would be a good solution to make them worse against lightly-armored troops, but crossbows are already quite poor at doing so (1/2 the number of attacks). I don't think they need a nerf in that department.

Give each nation a recruitable unit that represents someone with minor magical talent. Not enough to get a full path, but more than John Militia. Set a reclimit of 2 or 3.
Give them a really shitty "spell" to cast, like a single fly Fire Flies. But have a series of rituals that transform all of these units in a province to ones with a better "spell". So your F magelet would start with a single Fire Fly, then at Evo 3 you'd be able to have him shoot an Orb of Fire for better damage and 1-tile heat shock, then at Evo 5 he'd be able to hit an entire tile with a miniature Falling Fires, and at Evo 7 he'd get a scaled down Pillar of Fire that hit a unit for heavy fire damage and the square for minor fire damage.

Just wanted to let you know., it's 2016 now.

And the game has a ton of information, that you've gotten a small taste of, but it's easy enough to just hop into single player for a bit to familiarize yourself with some basic strategies and the interface then start playing games online. You really do learn the game much better and much faster when playing against other players, jokes about 6 months of singleplayer notwithstanding. You'll suck, but most people suck so it's not a big deal.

It's not too difficult to learn how stuff works, how to play well is another matter. The main thing is that the method by which most multiplayer games are played, play by email, lends itself well to short daily periods of play to do turns. It's almost criminally easy to make your own game, and numerous guides exist to help you out. As well, making a game is actively encouraged by every dominions community. If you feel like you don't have time or aren't willing to take a double/not be the last player to submit a turn every turn, perhaps you should make a game with a super long turn timer, and advertise it as such.

Graphs time! First up is Research, where I have finally edged into 4nd place. Lanterns light the way! In first is, of course, Sauro. Niefel and Caelum are right behind though, and Fomoria only dropped off a little bit, most likely because of the war with Ulm. The Big upset here though is Lanka, rocketing through all the old competition from their spot on the bottom, and look to steal their way into the top 5 in the next few turns.

Next up is Provinces, which I am now in my rightful place as #1! Lanka was definitely in the lead for a solid while as they got to swoop in and eat both Pan and Abysia with no contest. Ulm, currently in a 5v1 is losing out on a lot of land, and as they decrease, other nations are getting a leg up on everyone else. Sauro and TC both in a solid 4th and 5th respectively, as the Ulm acquisitions start stacking up for them, though I expect Fomoria to start getting near the top if their fast expansion into Ulm lands doesn't slow down soon. Niefelheim is chugging right along in the top 5 though, securing the #3 spot, and not likely to be losing it any time soon. You guys pick the next graph, it's more fun that way, keeps me on my toes for what to talk about.

I will have you know that Every trade is a fight between friends, and I have been in a vast number of tussles this game already. Before Ulm started Staling, we had a deal for splitting C'tis between us which allowed him to take their capitol. Niefel does talk of casting AC and Illwinter often, but I believe Sauro is on board with my plan to cast Nexus and send everyone 50% of their stated gem expenses every turn as Astral. You know, tax rebates.

The problem is Xibalba is next to Lanka, and the both of them apparently have come to the conclusion that a fight against one another before all others are removed would be disastrous.

Well, Lanka was the Agartha in AY, so since they haven't snowballed to a win yet I don't think it is gonna happen this game. Also, I am pretty sure that all of the top 5 players atm have never dropped a game from anything other than being 100% removed from the game. There is talk of only casting fun globals like Ghost Pirates, and Drown-ball though. I plan on Putting the Sun in my Underground Resort and giving everyone a new Sun to replace the old banged up one. Fun things should keep happening for those that stick around and watch. Also, what Graph next guys?

Well, someone picked Forts, so Here we go! Sauro has developed land as far as the Eye can see, a real go-getter for infrastructure. Now you all can see why I want them working with me on developing Oeridia. Me and Neifel arn't slouching either though. Lanka is beating out R'leyh by one fort it seems, but with that Land expansion going on, R'leyh seems in position to set up a lot more coastal forts. That might positively effect their position in research as well. We'll be able to tell later on though.

For a while there, with Pan's Capitol and Lands, and Abysia's lands, Lanka was really close to beating me out, but the water provinces I recently took and the few C'tis lands I grabbed pulled through, and with that I have hit 80+ fire gems a turn, and rather solid income across the board (except air still). Tc was stagnating, but is starting to make gains again as they take some of Ulm's lands, and Niefel seems to have either stopped site searching, or run out of sites to search. Sauro on the other hand seems to be picking up speed, possibly having gotten some of Ermor's nicer provinces instead of Niefel getting them. Sauro could be gearing up to enter the top 3 sometime soon.


As for Blood slaves, it seems that either Lanka or Niefel is in first place for Blood income, with Sauro and I close behind. There is no graph for this, so I have just been listening to the gloating, and watching certain places fill up with units at certain speeds, and approximating. I do no know who else is sneaking a blood econ in under everyone's nose though at the moment.

Yes, that did happen a few turns ago, however I was talking about the flat-lining of increase in gem income from the last few turns for TC and Niefel. Sauro, after that jump, continued to increase in gem income from additional site searching. Niefel would also like for me to let people know that his blood hunting is not as good as I think it is, and R'leyh wants me to know that he is also a blood nation and got many a good deal from Neifelheim.

Hey, I am trying to have fun instead of Tryharding. I made multiple attempts to convince people to let me set up trading houses around the globe instead of actually expanding, but no-one bit except Kailasa, and then the Ermor war started. For singleplayer, play as many nations as possible. It's the only way to learn something. For MP, Fomoria covers a lot of ground, but you should try EA Vanheim/Pangea with several blesses and something like scale Sauromatia and/or Pythium to get a feel for squishy humans with sorcery paths.

Upgrades are actually really really easy to code. It's just tedious with the way triggers and requirements work. For example, there's no way to reliably trigger shit with a spell. So to upgrade a province with a site, for example, you need to code an empty province enchantment (think trade wind), and make events that trigger only when this enchantment is active AND some conditions are met (there are enough free site spots, the province has a fort etc). The other way is summoning (or hiring) some unit and again making an event that triggers ONLY when this unit is patrolling the suitable province. It's doable, but doesn't feel smooth in execution.

The right answer is: the one you find most interesting. How much fun you have playing one nation dictates how much you are willing to learn to make it work and that's what matters.
i would *prefer* to AVOID:
- nations that have the population of their provinces die every turn because they play a bit differently.
- nations that are really weak at expanding early. they are completely viable for a new player if you take an awake god and eventually you will have to understand how to expand with shitty troops, but it's not the best first learn.
-nations with a strong blood presence ( blood random on some mages might be ok). it's not hard to understand but it's microintensive ( look for keybinds) and it might make the lategame a bit boring.


All ages are ok.Early Age is better because nations are more stereothypical and tends to be deep into 2 paths of magic, making choices more obvious, while MA and LA tends to have more magical paths but you have to work to reach a certain level in a path.But you shouldn't mind that much. they are all ok to start with.

if i had to choose one nation to learn the game i would choose EA abysia, Pangea, EA/MA Ulm, Tienchi any era, Arcoscephale any era, EA/MA Caelum, MA man. they are not strong for multiplayer but if you join a noob game being able to play you nation is more important than how strong the nation is usually considered.

there are several ideas you can explore but you are not required to:

Sorry to break the circle-jerk for a minute but it's a run of the mill turn-based tactics game with some shallow strategy elements.

the amount of systems your game have are not an indication of how strategical it is. for example chess is simple, yet it has deep strategy, while large system like civilization culture and faith systems end up bringing few strategical choices and just play out like simcity upgrades.

Dominions and Civ games have about the same amount of strategical aspect, its just Dominions has an excellent tactical side (which Civ games utterly lack) while Civ games usually have an excellent grand strategical side.

There are far more ways to construct a war machine in Civ than there are in Dominions, but only a few to smash them into each other, vs Dominions which has only one or two ways to construct a war machine (blood vs gold eco) but far more ways to smash them into each other.

The difference between strategy and tactics is a difference of scale in the units you control and the mechanics involved in the game. Tactics games involve primarily army-based units or lesser, and have few mechanics that involve economic or political simulation. Dominions 4 has way more options at the last detailed level and very few at the top one, but it has many layers and i don't feel like trying to related those layers to different games is a fair comparison.And to be honest the top layers of dominions 4 might have few gameplay options but still give you some relevant choices.
For example i would say that the research and the spell selection you choose to fight a *war* with still belong to the strategy talk and allow more or similar ( depending on matchup) choice than civilization choices which are just " attacking when i unlock comp bows, infantry or tanks?", while i would define the provinces you exactly move your armies to and the battle setup of single units as tactic. but even then this is quite arbitrary.

turmoil( which goes hand in hand with full luck and some magic) gives you TONS of menads(buff them with alterations!), but you lose precious early gold for buying sacreds to expand.
growth 3 is forced unless you are playing 1vs1; you can take some sloth 2 or 3.
i'd say cold 3 is decent depending on enemy nations, although i've seen neutral temp scales being suggested for first year gold.

Pangea can be played bless less and expand with its many decent troops ( i think revelers and various satyrs) but W9 horses are extremely efficient at expanding. N9 blesses are a less strong but still viable options.

You are expected to cast Mother Oak: your pretender is the fastest way to cast it.
You might not want to go mother oak depending on diplomacy or other nations but it's crazy not to.
if you get a dormant pretender you will still probably get it at turn 20 +, but dormant feels too late and you are better off casting it with on construction 4->thistle mace->alteration 5->cast it with a Pan.


this was my starting pretender and i am happy about it. you can test some cold scales for more magic/dominion/nature but it's not necessary. it REQUIRES practicing the first 10 turns because you feel the lack of gold a lot.

I'm Pan in the newbie game, so my advice may not be worth a shit, but I'll give it anyway.

A lot of what>>146502286 said is what I did, though I didn't bother with N magic on my pretender. I went with a W9 bless so my centaurs could dodge more stuff and get quickness. They're pretty tough with or without it and you can expand very well with them (my expansion in RotP wasn't great, but that was because I kept running into my neighbors). Turmoil for Maenads is fun, but you'll be low on money so make sure to take growth. And take full luck and magic. I've gotten a shit ton of gems and gold just from lucky events.

I did beeline for Mother Oak, but in the event I didn't get an N5 Pan, I also beelined for construction so I could make a thistle mace. Unfortunately I didn't have a lot of great magic for fighting with, and now I'm trying to fix that. It's been fun though. Seducing/assassinating things with dryads is fun, unless they fail to seduce someone repeatedly. Then it gets annoying.

Some people just play Single Player forever. It's plenty of fun based on the breadth of the game alone, but MP is a different experience. The stalls and deadmins make it extra fun

You probably know it, but you dont really need a N5 pan at all.
It helps you casting it faster, but getting construction4 for thirstle mace and then alt5 isnt slow at all

That's what I meant. When I started playing, I had a plan to go for Mother Oak as quickly as possible. I was thinking that if I got lucky and got an N5 Pan, great, I'd use him. But if not, I'd have to devote time to construction. It wasn't slow, per se, but it did prevent me from researching magic that could have helped me in other ways in the early game.

Well, it's worth noting that games can feature several levels of operation to varying degrees. For example, Chess is primarily tactical while Go is primarily strategical but both have their strategic and tactical components as well (Wikipedia has good examples of what those might entail in its Chess/Go strategy/tactics articles).

The concepts are fairly well-defined and universally understood in circles that care about the distinction, the primary ambiguity is from applying real world military terminology to more abstract games (for example, NATO Glossary of Terms and Definitions defines tactical level as "The level at which activities, battles and engagements are planned and executed" but if you tried to apply this to Chess, it's not clear if the game itself is the battle/engagement or if we should be looking at more localized conflicts) in favour of more abstract strategy/tactics concepts as used by Chess communities among others (strategy=general long-term planning, tactics=specific series of moves to achieve a tangible goal).

However, generally speaking there won't be any major misunderstandings regardless, and not too many games are in the ambiguous spot if they are realistic enough for military terminology to be useful. For example, on both accounts it's clear that battles in Dominions are exclusively tactical, and ~everything outside battles is something else (strategic, grand strategic in terms of MP diplomacy, and while you could shove it into strategy as well, operational level of war might be a good way to describe the movement of armies).

There might be some disagreement about which level the game focuses on/which one is more impactful (and indeed it might depend on a player: a diplo monster might be playing a grand strategical game while a script wizard might win their games with tactics) but not to the extent where there couldn't be an agreement about which levels of operation the game involves, and which ones play a noteworthy role.

i don't feel like telling half-truth or lying. the answer is NO.
to its credit the AI makes big armies and try to kill you, which is already better than most strategy games where the AI passively stay neutral while you are winning the game.

but the AI is really bad at menaging armies and mages past mid game and, unless you like self-imposed limits and roleplaying or you are 14 or you are just ok with winning easily as long as you get to summon sick ass demons, you should lose the will to play single player after 2-3 complete games.

This game is for multiplayer and you should getting into a multiplayer game after few hours of toying against AI.

Jotunheim, Agartha and Vanarus please try and do your turns within the first 24 hours if you're able. The 48 hour limit is there for just in case something comes up and for the post turn 50 period of the game.

If you are last to do a turn, please do a double. This is the only game I'm involved in so I might just host another to actually get my dom4 fix. Atm its 5 minute turns every 2 days.

He's right though. It's fundamentally an academic point, but he's right.

It's not just scale, but nature. The boundary is somewhat arbitrary in real life, but rarely in games. Dominions has incredibly deep tactics (battles) and the strategy has depth mostly as a shadow of tactical depth, as you try to provide a favorable situation for upcoming battles. That, fundamentally, is what strategy is anyway, but the game mechanics of the game don't arbitrarily add strategic depth beyond that, and things like infrastructure and resource management are quite simple. I agree with the underlying point that Dominions remains more strategically complex than your generic 4x (be that Civ or whatever) but I disagree with your semantic points. I feel that economic micromanagement of civ games is of lesser significance than the totality of the strategy afforded to Dominions by the complexity of the tactical game, and that such economic detail is largely ancillary to strategy anyway.
