I would just pick a character you like the general feel of then practice their bnb combos until it's muscle memory, then do the combat training mode to learn more about movement, bound status, etc

Well I mean yeah it's pretty obvious that's how the development went. Just as a reminder, the first time we saw the game and it looked like total garbage, Oda said the game was 70% complete. They no doubt got every character working on a really basic level so they could be balancing while they made the game and then slowly did graphical improvement passes again and again and again. Angel's model for instance the first time we saw it was almost completely different to the one that is in the game now.
