Why in the fuck would you ruin your first blind playthrough with summons? The whole point is the first time you fight shit and you don't know what's going on, you get your shit pushed in, you get frustrated, build up an immense amount of stress and pressure, and finally "release" when you finally win against something you thought was potentially unbeatable.

And yes, DS3 is my first souls game and Abyss Watchers was in that sweet spot where I was still a newbie but also haphazardly skipped crystal sage (didn't even know she existed) and was underleveled for it. It took me 8 tries and I won with 0 estus left, 1 HP and killed him with the 4th swing of my sword that used up the very last of my stamina. The bosses before that were relatively easy and the ones after I got gud enough to beat them all relatively easily (pontiff took me 3 tries, and surprisingly by the time I got to NK at SL80 I beat him on the first try with like 4 estus left).

Abyss Watchers though... that was an amazing experience, my whole body tingled, idk how to describe it. Like twice as good as a normal orgasm but with no cleanup. Makes me sad that you ruined it for yourself.

There's two NPC summons that further questlines but the summons themselves are the only step.

IIRC you have to summon Sword Master to get chaos blade, and you have to summon Culculus for Cornyx Set and Spotted Whip

The trade off there is that both summons won't contribute much to the fight, except that sword master can take a few hits and culculus can poison multiple times

If it's a first blind playthrough of any Souls game then there's no reason to necessarily assume that

I'm going through all 3 games at SL1 to test how viable the playthrough is in each of the games, and something I took notice of is the progression of the number of bosses you can parry in each game:

The Lightning Spear family is incredibly fast, but is still practically a melee spell. They hit hard, though, especially Sunlight Spear.

Gnaw, Dohrys' Gnawing, and Lifehunt Scythe got speed buffs as well and aren't too shabby. The first two are great on FAI/LCK builds since they apply tons of bleed buildup. Lifehunt Scythe is great when paired with a talisman because it greatly benefits from their WA. It also got a huge damage buff and health drain buff so it's actually useful now.

There were a lot of other speed buffs for spells, too, but not enough to make good quite yet. I think magic will improve a lot once the DLCs come around.

The Old Monk, when offline, is still the worst designed boss in the entire series.
It is just an NPC with a fist weapon in a game with terrible fist weapons with an auto assist mini spell, in a oval room.
He will fist R2 you. You should remember how bad the fist R2s were.
In no situation should you ever encounter a semblance of challenge in this if you can get past the BP mindflayers, who are the real boss.
It is the simplest boss and the one with the least amount of effort.

I think the opposite is true, actually. DS3 was beautiful to look at and fun to play for me, I really took my time with it, my first playthrough taking well over 150 hours (mostly because I'd take long breaks doing invasions and duels at various stages). It got me interested in the whole scene.

Now I can go back and play DS1 and eventually DS2:SotFS and enjoy them because I already fell in love with the gameplay, have a good rough understanding of the lore, and have seen enough webms here and videos on the internet to be unphased by the graphics now. I'm prepared for a lot of the bugs and glitches and such. I still don't know shit about the areas, bosses, etc, but I'm far enough along to have an appreciation for the game and want to play the rest of the series now.

Besides all that aside, honestly I don't really give a fuck about the story/lore at the end of the day. I care about the game and the gameplay. I care about facing areas and bosses that give me enough of a challenge that I get my ass handed to me over and over and over again, so that when I finally win it feels amazing. That's why I got into the series in the first place.

Kind of a problem I have with the game as a whole, it goes in heavy with the call backs that the original ideas and plots don't feel too important. In 1 and 2 by the the time you reached the half-way point you were told to meet some big important character (Gwyn and Vendrick), but 3 doesn't really have anything like that. The Twin Princes should have been the most important characters in the game, but they don't feel anymore important than the other three Lords, who are all call backs in themselves.
