looking to buy a new cpu. My understanding is that DCS isn't really multi-threaded and that having less but more powerful cores is most important correct?
>>
>>145537564

Yeah, DCS runs on one core (with audio handled on a second, IIRC)

so single-core performance trumps multiple cores. That's actually true for most games, from what I understand
>>
>>145537564
Correct. Either get a Sandy Bridge and OC at will (i'm 100% serious, those CPUs are the embodiment of futureproof), or get a newer Intel CPU, delid it and replace the fuckawful thermal paste between the heat spreader and the die with Noctua or something. Of you don't need a fucking hammer for deliding it.
>>
>>145537950
>>145538020
thanks, i'm currently looking at Intel's i3-6100. From what i've been reading it seems to have amazing single core performance for the price. Seems like it would do really well with DCS

Just make sure that you can OC it, inform yourself on how to do it if it's possible, and get the "tray" version of that CPU and an aftermaket cooler. Even something really cheap like a Raijintek Aidos or Coolermaster TX3 makes a whole world of difference.

When it comes to headtracking for third worlders:

Shit tier:
smartphone tracking (lol3DOF, might be decent for memegames like El*te or Arm*, but definitely doesn't work if you actually need SA)
facetracking (implying it ever works, implying facetracknoir isn't total shit)

God tier:
Aruco paper marker tracker (accurate as fuck, the only con is that you need a hat and a rigid piece of plastic/cardboard and a hat)

>>
>>145551130

I mean, you can energy fight without boom and zooming, strictly, but it's the easiest and least risky method

Fucking turnfighters, man. Angle fighting is the easiest shit, you don't need to know anything about flying or your airplane to make it work well (Obviously knowing how to yo-yo and your optimal speed for sustained/instantaneous turn rates is good, but you don't NEED that)- you just fucking bank and yank. Meanwhile, energy fighting requires a sound understanding of fighter tactics, the capabilities of your airplane versus the enemy's airplane at different altitudes and starting conditions, and good gunnery to put shots where they'll do something in the split-second opportunities you usually get.

Apparently DGC does provide a dynamic campaign as long as you stick to one map. The airfield capture and transfers keep you busy for a while, just be sure to read the readme because it requires the user to enable a log to keep track of the losses in the campaign. I dont know if it works properly for the pacific theatre though.

>>145594465
If you mean entry entry, then DFGT, but they don't make those anymore. If you mean mid-range then G27, but they don't make those anymore.

The G29/G290 seem to be decent and more or less repackaged G27s but with the DFGT wheel button layout (which I personally prefer). However, the G29, at least last I checked, is a bit overpriced for what it is.

Honestly there isn't a good answer to that question anymore. I'd still say try and find a used G27 as an all encompassing starter wheel that has everything, but those things are getting expensive as fuck priced way beyond what they're worth.

As for G290 vs G29, get the G290 only if you plan on using this wheel with an Xbox One. Otherwise, get the G29 because it has a few more buttons. Both are compatible with PC.

Probably because the LEDs used were different. A single one of my LED require 1.5v to light and I am using USB power, so even if I were to get rid of my resistors and over volt, it would't be very much. Plus over volting will shorten the life of the components. Fk too late now, should I even bother to pull the resistor out?

Okay, maybe I've been a bit unfair towards smartphone headtracking. It has the advantage of being relatively accurate (assuming you you use Opentrack and set accella filter right), and you can't go out of bounds with it. And it requires you just to have a smartphone and a router that supports wifi/a bluetooth dongle.

Greece and Turkey have a long standing border dispute regarding a bunch of islands in the Aegean sea. Tensions flare up from time to time, there have been a couple collisions during intercepts, in 95 a Greek Mirage F.1 ran an evading Turkish F-16 into the ground, and in in 96 a M2K shot down an F-16 with a Magic II.

Is there any interest in a flyables mod?

I'm currently fucking around with giving an F-18 mod a modified F-15 EFM. If this proves successful I will try and give more mod aircraft EFMs.

Modding DCS will be the death of me I swear.
>>
>>145746219
>got called a retard in wtg because I said you can't use HARMs on the A-10C or fly the F-18 in game

I mean you can with mods but I'd hardly class mods as features of the base game
>>
>>145746219
While that'd be nice why use the F-18 and not the F-15E, or something like the MiG-31?
>>
>>145746863
You can't use HARMS on the A-10C in DCS, even with mods. The systems are just too complex to mod something like that in unfortunately.

>>145747461
The F-18 is a testbed at the moment as its one of the better done mods, alongside the A-7E.

Once I have this one working everything else should be much easier. The F-15E will be a copy paste, and the MiG-31 should be fairly simple, just increase thrust and reduce manoeuvrability. I'm not going for exact real world performance, just close enough and what feels good.

I have a long list of flyables I'm compiling together and modifying, so it may take a few days, depending on my motivation.
>>
Are games like Red Baron welcome here? It's a flight sim with very light RPG elements

also its old as shit
>>

Of course, the RPG elements in career mode aren't even significant enough for it not to be welcomed here.

I used to love the shit out of Red Baron as a kid. AoP and AoE had more shit and were less bland though. But i like WWI so i always find myself going back to Red Baron.

/kspg/ was nuked because it turned into a general with the sole purpose of raiding the devs which is against the rules, not because the community was toxic. /gsg/ is full of shitposts because it's probably the oldest general on /gsg/ and thus has lots of history and personality drama. The mods won't nuke it because of that.

>>
>>145751531
so when /gsg/ raids johan's wikipedia page that's not grounds for their deletion?

>>145751681
/gsg/ still talks about the games they play though. /kspg/ was nuked because the whole general was mobilized against the devs instead of talking about the game.

>>
>>145752329
It's not against the rules to shitpost the majority of the time and talk about your game a little bit. The reason /kspg/ got banned was because they stopped doing this and the whole general became an invasion/raid thread which is against the rules.

Are there any recommended audiobook memoirs of pilots (and modern infantry/cavalry, although pilots are preferred?)

Just finished Civilian Warriors (Blackwater CEO's memoirs) and Viper Pilot (F16 SEAD in the first and second gulf wars).

Something about A-10s or similar ground attack/interdiction/SEAD, rather than just fighters, would be preferable.

I've always thought that the Su-24 would be ED's first multi seat module. It was updated with one of the nicest 3D models in the game out of the blue a few years ago and ED have been updating the 3D models of all the Russian A2G missiles.

For 4th gen niggers: separate throttle for dem hat switches and buttons.

I'm curious why older fighters have so many less AAM pylons than older ones (early F-5s and MiG-21s only having two, for example).

Was it because of weight, cost, did they just really think they didn't need more?
>>
>>145766404
Missiles were unreliable, guns much more dependable. The more external stores you slap on the outside of your plane, the more you degrade your performance and considering the missiles are all rear aspect only, you actually need turning performance.

Just look at the DCS:MiG-21, you can load up with the maximum 6 missiles but you'll never get on anyone's tail unless you ambush them as you end up flying like a brick compared to a clean 21.

Since it's Friday, I'll try and organise some ops in a few hours at 22:00 UTC, details below:

Countdown:
http://www.timeanddate.com/countdown/vacation?iso=20160617T22&p0=%3A&msg=%2Fsimg%2F+flies+friday+OPS&font=sanserif&csz=1

Report in TS just before the time listed above, Brits should beware that UTC =/= British Summer Time.
ts.artificialanimation.com:7997

The size of the mission will scale with how many people we get;
If we just get a few (~4) then we'll fly *one* of the stories in the briefing to the left,
If we get more (~8) we'll fly them both simultaneously,
If we get even more still (~10) then some people can fly as a MiG-21 OPFOR flight.

The selection of planes available is generous, we even have Su-25T slots for SEAD/attack.

maybe I'll just do this.
BARCAP: "Barrier Combat Air Patrol", in fleet terms, a mission flown between a carrier battle group and the direction from which it is most likely that an enemy attack will come. Also refers to fighter aircraft placed between a friendly strike force and an area of expected airborne threat, also known as a "MiG screen".

Some DCS questions:
1. Can I be militarily useful in the free SU25T?
2. With ~300 ping, would I be too laggy for multiplayer?
3. Would people be upset by a useless SU25T providing target practice to the other team in multiplayer because the pilot hasn't mastered weapons systems yet, or would I just be ignorable? [i.e. is there any disadvantage to others caused by my presence.]

Thinking about committing to DCS for a while. If it's fun then I can buy an F-5 or something.
>>
>>145804364

The Su-25T is a fairly competent ground attacker and the only player-flyable aircraft capable of SEAD (aside from suicidal wild weasel type shit).

You'll be useless in MP, though. What sort of hardware are you running?

Useless in a way that's detrimental to others, or just useless in a way that wastes my own time? I'm not concerned with wasting my own time [that always happens], but I'd hate to make a burden of myself by displacing a useful aircraft or something.

I fall below the minimum hardware requirements [i3 @ 2.1ghz, 6GB RAM, GT540M], but it was playable when I briefly tried it a while ago [I don't even think I was on minimum settings]. I'm currently downloading the update. If the update's put up system requirements [I don't remember them being that high] I may have to defer.

CONSPIRACY: ED is going to release a Su-24

We have to dig deeper:

First we get heavy Su-24 footage in a video about Su-25s
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BeKVU1g2loM

Next we get Su-24s parked at Nellis on one of Papi Wags' livestreams

And finally today they updated their Facebook cover to a Su-24

Because there is an android app that just sends your device's gyro orientation and it works well but, in case it doesn't work:

Are you good at DIY? Buy a PS3eye, tape a piece of exposed film/floppy disk in front of the lens and make yourself a hat based IR emitter.
Are you bad at DIY? Can you afford to spend 40/50 bucks? Buy a Delaclip/Trackhat kit.
You can't afford to spend 50 bucks? Do you have a webcam and a printer? Print two/three different aruco markers and attach them to a hat.

If you can't do anything of what I listed get a fucking job.

Oops yeah, Hong Kong.

<---- This is the one I bought. Came with the point model, a PS3 Eye /w IR filter removed and a visible light filter installed, a mount for the PS3 eye, and a lense cap.

It's probably the most convenient way, his point model is way better than the piece of shit I made out of hollowed out bic pens and hot glue, and the camera mount is skookum.

I don't think so, you don't need huge magnets or anything.

How's the tracker itself, build quality wise? Is it easy to replace the leds/resistor? Does it have a PTC fuse? If it's good on those accounts we probably should put it the link to it in the pastebin.
>>
>>145832540
>Back to /a/
KEEP ANIME OFF /simg/ !
>>
>>145832559

The point model is made up of 2 3d printed parts glued together, it's really sturdy but isn't easily serviceable if an LED burns out; not sure it has a fuse or not.
>>
>>145832801
nice quote, faggot
>>
>>145832884
I was afraid it'd be built like that, thanks for confirming my suspect. I'd still put it in the pastebin nevertheless, as it costs half of a Delanclip and shipping is free.
>>
>>145833306

Bang for buck it's probably the best solution, especially since he sourced a replacement lens so the camera actually focuses properly without the IR filter.

Who in their right mind buys the cameras from those people anyway? It's not like you *need* to remove the IR filter, and they sell them for absurd prices, while you can find them for 10 bucks or so if you know where to look.

Why not? From this particular seller it's only $10 more than his LED point model, and it comes with a proper monitor clip.

And sure, you can use thse camera unmodified, but removing the IR filter and adding a visible light filter makes a pretty big difference, especially if your gaming room is well lit. In this picture there are multiple light sources behind me emitting visible spectrum light.
>>
>>145837897
Mine can perfectly see the IR leds and the only modification I did to it was taping a piece of floppy in front of the lens (the only mod it really needs, otherwise the point tracker starts picking up random shit).
>>
>>145838128

I read there are 2 different models of this camera, maybe that's why the first one I did was so shitty unmodified; I've heard other people say they work fine with just a visible light blocker.

Anyhow, that HK seller sells the kit without the camera or camera-mount for $10 less.

fug. Any landing you can walk away from though, r-right?

Seriously though how do you reliably land in a confined space? Preferably without slowing way the fuck down beforehand- I'm trying to git gud for combat ops.

>Seriously though how do you reliably land in a confined space?
Planning & skill, once you git gud at landings you'll be able to land almost anywhere as you'll get a feel for how far away you need to be to start your approach without going into VRS.
>>
>>145848824

I've owned the huey for a long ass time and I can make like... normal field landings fine, even land in those revetments they use for loading bombs onto aircraft (I think that's what those are, at least) on most military airfields, but landing with obstructions in my path that require a steep descent still fucks me over. I always end up overtorqueing the helo (which doesn't really do much in DCS, but I still avoid it because muh RPing engine life), or overrunning the landing zone.
