It's not that hard to grasp f-a-m, DCS is the crysis of our day
>>
>>145137230
Sims are filled with optimization issues so you're better off with a mid to high end rig, at least. I'd recommend an intel processor because a lot of vidya is meh to bad at handling more than 4 cores.

>I wanted to use DCS as my reference point
read the recommended specs and add a bit more of raw power to the mix
>>
>>145139553
Are you genuinely retarded? Crysis was a benchmark because
1. it looked good
2. it required not only a beefy CPU but also a lot of graphical power.

DCS is bottlenecked by the CPU first and foremost, then storage devices, and also RAM.
>>
>>145139893
Oh and for the record Crysis can run with decent FPS even on toasters if you play with potato settings, the same can't be said about DCS.
>>
>>145139553
>crysis of our day
It could run well. But can eat more when asked to.

DCS eats everything, then shits out 2 FPS.
>>
so what I've gathered from the comments so far is that none of you have 60fps. no need to be salty

I can get 60fps in MP with most of the settings turned way low. Old ass Core i7 920, GTX560ti, 12GB of RAM. For whatever reason DCS seems really limited by non-sequential read speeds, adding a cheap SSD made a world of difference in performance.

I can actually get 40-60 FPS on max graphics if the situation is right, such when there's few things happening

>>145144719
Though then you have cases such as this were the game just straight up says "No fuck you enjoy your 15FPS" for the smallest of stuff. Also cases when the game had a memory leak before some patch fixed it and I couldn't play MP/large instant actions without the game freezing.

So basically, don't base a computer off of DCS specs.

Yeah SSD helped a lot, I was having major stuttering problems in multiplayer that are all but gone now. Also download the mod that removes tree shadows, it makes a massive difference.

I'm also running in Windowed fullscreen which eats a few FPS, and using Opentrack which eats up some CPU cycles. But overall this old rig is just fine, but none of my screenshots are ever going to be pretty.

no, the IFF symbology is the same as the modern russian planes.
>>
>>145193147

When you lock something, you'll eventually get a tone. That's max range.

Get closer and you get red symbology, that RTR/Second pull etc. Shoot then.

IFF can only be done before you lock. Minus is enemies, equal sign is friendly.

Once they're locked you get no indication.

I really gotta learn how to deal with those spins it loves to get into when I turn it a little bit more than it likes.
>>
>>145189163

honestly any time I land anything fixed wing I tend to basically stall it right at the runway threshold. Fucked if I know why, but if I'm not following a specific landing profile I will drop airspeed as much as I can until I hit critical AoA, then land like that. Maybe I was a bush pilot in a former life and had to learn how to make minimum-length landings a lot or some shit.
>>
>>145199965
You'd be better off (and spend less time fighting the plane) if you just learned how not to induce those spins.

>>
>>145200303
Fly your approach speed then find a point on the runway and keep that point as still as you can. Then as the end of the runway goes beneath you, look at the end of the runway, go to idle power, and keep bringing the nose up to meet the end.

Using that technique you should theoretically be able to land any plane nicely.

>>
>>145200303
Stalling it on the threshold is risky, it'll give you the shortest roll out, but as long as you are not overweight you shouldn't need to.
The correct way to do it is find the appropriate pitch and then use your throttle to adjust AoA until you intercept the glide path and follow it down.

The glide slope is always 3 degrees so if you know your landing AoA, just subtract 3 to give you the correct pitch, then just use you throttle to follow the glide path (add power if you are under it, decrease power if you are over it).

They do generally pick up on moving targets. And, as a helicopter, by virtue of your method of lift generation, you're always a moving target- your rotor disc is turning insanely fast.

Now in reality you'd likely be able to hide amongst ground clutter to reduce the range at which you were visible to radar, but at the moment the only aircraft with any sort of ground reflections on radar only has -1.5deg scan elevation below the horizon, so you're probably not going to be sniffed out by a fishbed.

A flight simulator is a device that artificially re-creates aircraft flight and the environment in which it flies, for pilot training, design, or other purposes. It includes replicating the equations that govern how aircraft fly, how they react to applications of flight controls, the effects of other aircraft systems, and how the aircraft reacts to external factors such as air density, turbulence, wind shear, cloud, precipitation, etc. Flight simulation is used for a variety of reasons, including flight training (mainly of pilots), the design and development of the aircraft itself, and research into aircraft characteristics and control handling qualities.

The Italian F-104S is the only Starfighter to ever carry a radar guided missile and that was a late addition. It's very difficult to find photos of F-104S's carrying Sparrows. I think I've only seen two or three.

If an F-104 was added to DCS it would either be a USAF F-104C, or the F-104G, which was the most common model by far. Neither carried radar guided air to air missiles.

The S is a tiny fraction of all Starfighters ever built, while the G was almost half.

>>145235632
I mean you can just make up your own definitions if you want, but be aware that most people aren't going to understand what you're talking about if you use it when talking to others. What even falls under second generation for you? Even the F-100 could fly supersonic. It seems to me like you're trying to use 2nd generation to very specifically define post war Korean era fighters like the F-86, MiG-17, and not much else.

Once you start including things like radars and swept wings, it's hard to find a plane that wasn't also supersonic or capable of searching for targets. There's a lot of overlap with what you're calling 3rd generation.
>>
>>145236789
That's actually AFM's definition of "generations", and I think that it's the one that makes the most sense. Because really, lumping the F-86 together with WW2 shit is just dumb.
>>
>>145235632
What is the point of ranging without searching? It feels like searching is a far more useful function, and for radar to have evolved like that seems counter-intuitive to me.

Gun sights. Using a ranging radar to feed the exact range to a radar gunsight makes accurate gunnery easier.
>>

>What is the point of ranging without searching
It makes gunsights much more accurate. Basically a crutch for shiters. Funfact: IIRC some pilots gave those sights monikers such as "ace maker".

>and for radar to have evolved like that seems counter-intuitive to me.
Lolno. A ranging radar is much simpler than a search radar with all that entails, and a search radar isn't that useful on a plane that operates from an area that has radars installed on the ground, because of GCI.
>>
>>145237130
Reading the AFM definition on wiki makes it make a lot more sense, and I realize how subjective and arbitrary these definitions tend to be.

In the wild, I often hear the Air Force Magazine version because the 4, 4+ and 4++ definitions contain very important distinctions and most of what I read about in my day to day life is current events in the industry.

F-86 is cool and really turny and fun to fly but there's not much in DCS for it- just the MiG-15 and T-55s and shit. Rudder control is essential to flight, however the Extreme 3D Pro has a twist rudder. It's absolutely 'fine' at that price point.

Restart the software maybe? Opentrack you can just toggle it off and on again easily within the software and the game detects it being disabled and enabled. If for some reason the game stops detecting it which has only happened once for me in my year and a half of using it, you can just toggle it off and on and it works again.

Away from the radar? Rotation != relative movement, you fucking idiot. If the radar picked any scattered background noise like this you would see every fucking metal radio tower as an airborne target on the screen. You don't have a heli body reflection when it's hovering. Every point on the heli blade have different linear speed. Every heli have a different number of blades and a random rpm. Radar greatly depends on clutter filtering when acquiring low targets. Only modern radars have a digital signal processing algorithms to analyze and localize the scattered noise source. Even then, they are not able to have a solid lock and it greatly reduces distance of detection and engagement compared to high and moving targets.

>>
>>145260414
I have a 3D pro and upgraded inb4 shitposting to an X-55

The 3D pro is a decent stick but you'll need to setup massive deadzones for it. The hat on it is pretty bad too and the software for the stick is very bare bones. It is comfortable though for the most part with a bunch of rubber bands stacked up near the base above the hand rest unless you have gigantic hands. The hand rest of the stick is very uncomfortable if it doesn't fit you just right.

You'll also find that it'll probably lack buttons for a space game like star citizen as you'll already be using a pretty large number of modifier keys plus using the keyboard itself in DCS alone for just the FC3 modules, let alone the full fidelity sims.

>Anything about this stick not stated in the pastebin?
afaik it's not bad, but everyone I know of is pretty sad that that paddle thing on the throttle is an axis and not just two buttons. Or else it would be a good way to bind zoom view.
>>
>>145263560
I say massive in comparison to my X-55 which I don't use any deadzones on at all. I think I used about 5-10% deadzones on x and y axis with a 20-25% deadzone on the rudder twist. I don't recall my stick having too much of a physical deadzone but the way it centers and lack of resistance until you push the stick more requires a larger deadzone setting.

I've heard the stick gets less accurate over time as well with more use so those may increase. The way it centers is a rubber/silicone thing that essentially pulls the stick back to center plus a spring in there somewhere I think so I can see how it wears down in strength over time.
>>
>>145263826
Depending on how it works I could bind the radiator there, or the trim because Im fiddling constantly with that, or something. That said, I dont know how it works even after watching an attempt of a review. It looked like it behaved like buttons instead of an axis so Im fairly confused.

>>145263953
Now I get what you mean. I thought only the x52 had issues with the resistance but it seems like that isnt the case. I went springless once with a cheap joystick I have and it was absolutely awful so Im not willing to go through that again.
I'll think about the 3d pro as an alternative, if anything.
>>
>>145264953
>Depending on how it works I could bind the radiator there,
It springs back to centre, that's why it's of dubious use.

>affordable hotas setup available in this shithole

You happen to live in Brazil by any chance, anon? I live here and had one.

>Now I have a boner. Anything about this stick not stated in the pastebin?

I owned it for about 2 years. The spring resistance on the stick is adjustable through a knob under the base, the stick itself has short travel (if compared to my current CH setup), only one hat and the paddle on the throttle is an axis centered on the middle. Although, like you stated, you -could- in theory work around that by removing the spring.

The big pro of the hotasx is that it's probably the cheapest HOTAS setup available while the con is that you're limited to 1 hat and the buttons it provides.

I guess I could deal with that. Im using a very, very cheap stick with short travel so Im kinda used to it. I just want a stick without accuracy issues, especially in the rudder twist.

CH doesn't feel cheap, the plastic is like industrial quality. It's light but it feels like you could throw it across the room and it wouldn't break.

Also it's got enough binds on the stick and throttle to map out the entire A-10C HOTAS so it's def the next best thing if the Thrustmaster is out of your price range.

Also actual fighter jet sticks are made out of plastic, unless they are Russian sticks, in which case they are clubs that are also pretty good at controlling planes.

Anyway, it's beyond me why people ever recommend anything from logitech, esspecially their joystic, both the G940 and the 3d pro are pieces of crap, and while the g940 can be fixed if you are good with electronics and soldering, there's no hope for the 3d pro, it should only be bought if the only other thing you can get is the saitek av8r or cyborg falls apart in your hands stick

I have another question on the Mirage. Is the radar supposed to move when you roll? The azimuth that it displays seems relative to your own plane, and not an overhead view like most other planes.

It depends on which specific version of the AN/APQ-159 we're getting. 159-1 would be the model with the capability to fire mavericks- it apparently had a "dual display" capable of operating in a television mode to slew and cue up targets for the mavericks.

Information on this is really fucking sparse though. A google search just throws up the wikipedia link and a bunch of articles reposting the text from wikipedia.

Shouldn't that radar's documentation and the F-5B's manuals be declassified by now? Why don't they get Wags to nag EE or Northrop about it instead of having him suck shitspawn's dick or play Guitar Hero?
>>
>>145321282
It's not that it's classified, the F-5 has never been classified afaik. Just because something is declassified doesn't mean it's documentation gets dumped on the internet though.
>>
>>145321282

The 159 never flew on the B as far as I'm aware. IIRC, the A/B model F-5s didn't even have radars- the 5E first flew with an AN/APQ-153 radar, then the E-3 was upgraded to the 159, and then some early model 159s had the capability to display TV images. Basically, we're looking at a subset of a specific block of aircraft trying to find information on a very specific, technical, obscure feature. As far as I'm aware, all the technical documentation on the F-5 has been declassified, but most of the shit I've found has been USAF stuff- so, very limited to the aircraft the USAF specifically acquired.

Likely, if a manual exists with a description of how the 159-1 operated in "maverick mode", it's in some shitty South East Asian language and it only exists as a ring-bound paper thing because only like two people ever actually flew them.

Honestly I'd be fine with them just fudging the maverick launching capability- just fuckin display the image on the radar scope (with a neat effect on the edges for the aberration you get at the edges of old CRT displays) and have it work similarly to the A-10C's maverick display just in lower res and shit. Yeah, it'd be guesswork, but ultimately the real system probably wasn't much different and it'd add some really neato strike capabilities to the aircraft.

Like, it'd very definitely add to an undeniably limited set of capabilities the aircraft has. The MiG-21 is its obvious competitor- compared to the MiG, the only new things it brings to the table are a better radar (that can't lock anything up BVR, really), a much better gunsight with some high velocity guns to go with it, and the ability to truck GBUs. It doesn't have any all-aspect missile capability, no radar-guided missiles, and its air to ground ordinance is more limited than the MiG's

so just fucking slap together something for the mavericks pls bst

I doubt it, because it was really pushing the limits of the airframe. I mean, look at the F-16 today, and the F-35. They could release a stealth version of the F-16 with all the same shit, but the F-35 will be more upgradeable later on.

It was pretty stupid to just kill off the Tigershark instead of just exporting the fucker, though.

Ooon the other hand, I do have a hard-on for planes that are just big enough to get the job done and nothing more, like the Bf-109, which is funny because it was also pushed to the limts of its upgradeability.

Well, for starters the F-20 was meant to have radar missiles right off the bat, while the F-16 became able to use them like in the early 90s?

>It was pretty stupid to just kill off the Tigershark instead of just exporting the fucker, though.
As far as I know the F-16's initial success is what killed it, but the stupid shit that was done by Northrop (the demonstration flights that killed the pilots thanks to blackouts) didn't help one bit.

Because the US literally gifts F-16s. Whoever can't afford to maintain them just upgrades old shit like MiG-21s and F-5s - and we could argue that the Tigershark is more alive than ever, at least its concept, as there are a seizable amount of F-5s that got upgraded to the point of being better than the original Tigershark at least from the avionics standpoint. Hel as far as I understand some F-5s are frankenplanes that use the same nose as the F-20.

I have ONE fucking complain about the F-5 we're getting and it's the lack of refueling probe. That's it. I seriously hope it will get it in 2019 or so, I'm positive that its really limited internal capacity and shitty engines (and therefore the need to use the AB often) will severely hamper it in the Strait. Or hell even in the Caucasus if they really end up with expanding it.
>>
>>145308424
It's not like it NEEDs the rear section for flying, I'm pretty sure it was also designed with that eventuality in mind.

how in-depth is the systems modelling? like, is there ground reflection on the radar or anything? Can you fly RIO on the tomcat?
>>
>>145370118
Do you still have the psd? Could you swap the moonspeak with Russian and the Fiji with Moloko or something?
>>
>>145418801
I'm not actually sure how in depth the radar is. It seems pretty simple, but I never did any testing to be sure. You can't fly RIO.

The systems are like IL-2 46. They're all very abstracted and you control things through hotkeys. It's a survey lite-sim in the same vein as old style flight sims like the Janes games.

Huh. Kinda lame. Anything more interesting than just fighter combat/simple air to ground- stuff like SEAD and maybe some more precision munitions available?

It's EASY, but it's not simple and it doesn't really teach him the basics of flight well.

Trainer aircraft, be them civilian or military are supposed to teach the basics of flight in an easy, yet challenging manner to teach the student good habits and to strengthen his ability.

If he just jumps into the F-15 first, he's gonna have a hard time transitioning to anything else.

Besides, the Su-25T is a good training platform, because it has a PFM and a few simulated systems to teach him the basics of the game and flight in general.

there isnt any modules besides the m2000 that can do modern air superiority

f-15 is pretty good for teaching modern air combat since it gets you understanding the concept of 50km flashlight tag fights
