Alien grenades are sentient beings with the sole purpose of planting eggs in your female troops.

In Long War I'm pretty sure once you get alien grenades, the explosive radius of starndard nades are increased.

So you could decide to trade off some of the damage for potentially more aoe dmg and cover destruction. But I think alien grenades still have more environmental damage.

Base assault are actually considered the meta strategy for getting the resources you need for the ridiculous cost of late game stuff in Long War.

I've seen multiple people even talk about letting terror attacks go if they were crushing the ayys to hard.

Legendary bumps up the length. Honestly though, if your expecting LW your just going to be disappointed. This is a sequel to XCOM EU/EW, NOT long war.

Play through at least a vanilla campaign, and then start modding away if you are still looking for LW2.

Check the OP modlist, its organized and a good place to start. Then your just going to have to start evaluating what changes need to be made and getting mods for it or doing it yourself.

There is currently no "LW" overhaul so to speak, all that stuff is in progress, all the building blocks are being established, it will be a while before some definitive overhaul mod is recognized. If that happens, though it still seems likely, we just might have more then 1 this time around.

But you really should start with a vanilla campaign, otherwise you won't actually understand how the gameplays, hindering your ability to modify it the way you want to.

I guess it's hard to explain, but the way I'd put it is you only get to experience playing a game for the first time only once, and I'd love to have all the options available to me when I experience these things for the first time.

I mean, I remember the first time I ran into chryssalids in UFO Defense and I shit my pants when everybody started dying because it was this whole new enemy that I was wholly unprepared for and erreybody died. Subsequent playthroughs you're just used to them.

Kind of like Newfoundland in XCOM, after you've experienced it once, you can't not be ready for it on the next playthrough.

I did but I actively followed Firaxis' workings and /xcg/. Hard not to be spoilered if you do.

The only alien that caught me totally off guard was the Andromedon I played on a friends account to help him saving his campaign, tho.

Shit was stil great and I'm a bit happy I didn't send one of my own soldiers right next to him for the killing blow.

I couldn't give you a comprehensive answer. Honestly, 60 hours seems a bit longer then I would think of for a standard commander campaign, assuming you aren't saving and reloading alot, or aren't spending tons of time customizing soldiers and dabbling.

I can tell you that Legendary double the construction times for everything, and does similar lengthening of research and the rate at which soldiers rank up.

So its a significant difference as you can imagine, and of course this doesn't include the possibilities of failed campaigns.

I'm sorry to have to inform you that anything below commander is considered easy. Relatively at least.
Sword rangers are poor on Commander (not recommended, very sub-optimal) and will absolutely get you killed on legendary. In concept their fun, but they just don't measure up to other builds unfortunately. Even the controversial gunslinger build is 100% certified for Commander difficulty, which means its probably still functional in Legendary.

The standard accepted build is conceal rangers, which focuses on stealth and the shotgun. I don't know if your aware, but lower difficulties give invisible aim modifiers to your hit chance, boosting you aim. This means on normal your ranger will land their sword alot more often then commander or legendary. Also, enemies have more hp in higher difficulties, so the massive damage that shotguns provide with criticals far outperforms for killing enemies, not even taking into account that unlike swords, shotguns can achieve 100% accuracy, and often do so.

Furthermore, moving into melee range increases the chance of activating more pods and can leave your ranger absolutely screwed in poor or flankable (or both) cover.

We had access to 3 maps.

Definitely some things broken, Samurai was OP as shit, you could attack so fast and there was a bug there if you spammed your kunai you would never triggered the cooldown on it, to top it off it one-shot players.
They also had a poison ability which drains 100% of health very slowly.

1v1 fights are great but ability to fight against multiplayer with the matched combat system proved difficult, it was possible, there was a system that made it easier to block attacks from opponents you are not locked on to but you'd still die most of the time.

Knights were really good too, Samurai was OP because their abilities were broken and they attack really fast.

They fought totally differently, for example, Knights you block in whatever direction/stance you are in however Samurai can not hold a stance, when you press a direction they only hold it for a few seconds. They were a very aggressive character.
I did prefer Knights, slower but did a ton more damage, they have a special move that lets you block and attack at the same if timed correctly (top strikes only). Samurai had this backstep slash attack which people liked to spam because it was easy to use against new players but experienced players can see it coming and just parry it.

The parrying mechanic temporarily gave you a damage and 'force?' boost, where your attacks are harder to block (they do chip damage) and you gain hyperarmour so you can just tank through attacks and wreck shit.

There was a little bit of customization, tons of armor patterns (with different areas [i.e Helmet, left arm etc]), 3 types of metal finishes (brass, steel and gold) and a bunch of insigniats.

Closest I can think of is a mix between the first BFME and Starcraft, and some elements of Generals.

You have a base slot with a set amount of building slots, and certain commanders with certain traits. Covenant leaders can actually fight on the field like hero units, UNSC can't. resources work like the mining fields in Generals, only you build them in a slot on your base with diminishing returns.

The rest is blobbing, blobbing, and max level spartan spam. Most games came down to a SC2 level of play without any abilities being used because it's so awkward to control. It was Grizzly/ODST/Spartan versus something something for the Covenant. Might have been a mixed bag like AOE3 had it come to PC, but being designed for consoles killed it.

It really doesn't but that's because they are trying to build a framework it seems.

With a little effort you can get a decent comp going with it included if you're inclined to.

I like it because of the auto resolve sometimes I use that to train the B or C team up. I play with fatigue notoriety cohesion and all soldiers gain XP too tho besides the standard difficulty mods. (IESS, All Pods Active, Reinforcements, + a few additional enemy types I'm waiting on ABA to include officer call for reinforcements.)

I like using the auto resolve because sometimes I send out the B or C team and them get some kills but I dont get universal XP and run the risk of people dying to complete the mission (small chance of a fail too.) It feels like a fair way to train troops if I dont want to grind out a mission just then. I usually use it when I have just run a nuts 90 minute mission prior or something like that and all m good guys are sot up fatigued or infamous.

The thing is, melee never really has been a thing in any x-com game, even the originals. Getting right up close to an ayy was risky and stupid. At any moment they could reaction fire you down, or you could also stumble into more aliens.

Core XCOM gameplay and Melee just doesn't really mesh, at least not enough to try and define half a class by it.

I played during beta (or... alpha?), regardless, the game was quite fun, despite it's easily fixable shortcomings.

I'm sure people will find a way to exploit and shitcunt their way to easy spammable victory, but in my very brief experience the game was a blast.

Fluid, fast, brutal combat, tight arenas spread out over a fairly large (really, medium sized) map, probably to keep people funneled into the same few areas for killing purposes.

If they don't fuck it up and just expand on what they have I think FH will be a great game.

Then again it is fucking UbiShaft, so god knows they'll find a way to Watch_Dogs it up

The information a scout can safely and quickly bring you is to good to pass up in my opinion. But due to them usually abusing concealment on the frontlines before an engagement it leaves them vulnerable to being spotted at times, which is why I like heavy armor+extra con. I mean shit IS going to go wrong and with them being so far forward it's hard/impossible to get a smoke nade on them, so I make them beefy as possible, because they will get shot every now and then, and you don't want to lose such a key component of your roster.

I've never turned it on before, but honestly, finding the last alien on the map can be an excruciating endeavor and I feel like this would make that even worse. I really don't want to find 5+ turns at the end of missions creeping my squad to comb every corner of the map. Then again, that's just conjecture, who knows maybe it works well.

One thing I really wish they could implement in OpenX-com is the sound cues from New XCOM. It completely eliminates that frustration of tracking down the last straggler while doing it in an interesting fashion. Honestly I like Revival protocol for early game. You won't use it often, but it removes panic and unconscious/stunned with a single action, which is pretty huge which means you can still shoot or combat protocol afterwards. This can save your squad in a situation that could wiper early.

Also early on usually your specialists suck too much to hack anything with enough consistancy to make it worth it.

So I would say, revival protocol early game, then somewhere during the midgame maybe retrain, especially if you have been getting the bonus hack skill rewards.

Also it has not connection to medkits or the healing tree, they operate completely independently.

The best part is that all of these factions have their own strengths and weaknesses, fully fleshed out. Some bring higher tech gear, some have more close ranged weapon preferances, others have stealth, some have armor extremely good against ballistic/piercing weapons, others have good energy weapon resistance.

Once you get the hyperwave beacon up, you'll actually spend your time equipping your squad with completely different equipment, weapons, and armor depending on who you are fighting. There is very little "x" is the best weapon or armor.

It was pretty bullshit.
Five troopers, I sneeki'd my way to the VIP while letting the pods stunlancer pods and officer + meatwall dipshits merge into one and walk into my prepped killbox.

Then the A.I decides to move a undetected pod on the roof of the building where the VIP and my troopers were, the pod consisted of pectoid, viper and another fucking stunlancer. The pod of course moved precisely one tile enough to flank my one overwatched grenadier and crit his ass without killing him, he didn't get to use his overwatch shot because the pod just fucking stood there instead of scurrying for cover.

It just went to hell from there on.

the muton was flanked by a grenadier so if the ranger fucked up he would still die, I sent the ranger there because he'd dash into cover by slicing the muton

I know less about guns than you do, but a hair trigger in the game gives you a free action, and plasma weapons suck energy(or something) into them before they fire, so my headcanon is that the "teeth" retain some of that energy and eventually they give you a free shot, or something.

I don't know i just made this up right now, but also the hair trigger of the default plasma rifles add some kind of rings around the center of the gun.

I've ran probably close to a total of 10 missions now trying to make through first contact without this exact scenario playing out each time: guy gets hit through full cover or a half cover hunker on the very first turn. Guy panics. 4/5 times another soldier panics as well.

Has sectoid aim been increased? What the fuck is this stupid bullshit? This literally never happened before.

You really must try and have NO return fire at all or a minimum of it if you want to survive the first few missions: Abuse grenades, break LoS, flashbang, etc. Otherwise you will get losses that you really can't afford when entering the mid-campaign as you need all the Corporals/Sergeants you can get.
