That's an interesting analogy, but yeah, I think it holds up; I'd say Doerr gets off lightly there, though.

The retranslation could have been excellent, but the team themselves weren't too good at writing and the dialogue didn't flow as smoothly as you'd expect it to be; often coming off as clunky or stilted. Neptune especially seemed to slip in and out of using and not using contractions, making the lack of a unified tone very apparent.

I have no qualms with the actual writing, I think it's much better in the re;translation, but the grammar needs a touch-up.

I know it's a dream sequence, but Noire's dream actually has a bit where she mentions a ritual that would make Uni take Noire's place as CPU. While its only mentioned in her dream of retiring, I like to think it's a real thing, since it would mean the candidates would still have an actual purpose in the CPU cycle. For the most part tough enemies do give good xp, but are hard to beat. If you need to grind, go to Mechtro Factory, with enemies added. The Child Whales have a lot of health, but they don't do much damage compared to other bosses, and they give enough xp that you'll level up every fight with one. Even better, there are two of them, and both are close to the entrance, so you can just leave and re-enter the dungeon to heal fully. You can eventually start killing the Herobro as well for an even more absurd amount of xp.
It also gets a lot easier when you get your EXE, like >>145223253 said. You get to the point where you can practically farm a level a minute or more.

To be fair to Doerr (and please do kill me if I ever use that sentence outside of this context) the Jap versions are filled with memes as well. Check this out http://wikiwiki.jp/neptune_v/?%A5%D1%A5%ED%A5%C7%A5%A3%B2%F2%C0%E2#wce483a4 and see how many references to 2ch. Also pic related. Neptunia is a very memey game. I won't defend "Cool Cucumbers" or stuff like that, because that is very subjective stuff -although "Nep Jr" sounds very fitting for Neptune IMO, since she's not one for formalities- but at least on the meme account he seems more or less in the clear to me. Jap puts memes here, so the localisation team sort of *has* to put memes somewhere close to the same place to preserve it, and translating memes is basically a losing game so searching for analogues makes some sense.

TL;DR: Nep Jr is fine by me, Doerr's jokes I don't care either way. But the jap version of the game sort of forces his hand on the memes.

I wasn't talking about basic grammar. Any ape can get grammar right; not anyone can write. It's not even about punctuation, a good writer can transcend that.

Take this as an example. "Are you still feeling like that" is completely an artefact of translation, that is not a "dumb" or "silly" sentence, like Doerr's; granted. It's just a sentence that would never be spoken "Are you still feeling down about it?" or "That still weighing on you? *anything*. And you know why they did it, because the Japanese version says "Sono yo ni" which literally google translates as "like that" The retranslation is just badly written. It's a teen's shitty poetry book, he has a big vocabulary oh yes, but he has no sense of flow or sentence structure. They've taken off Doerr's touch, but they've ruined every other piece of dialogue with their amateurishness. Nothing reads well.

Let's use another screenshot (third google result if you search "Neptunia retranslated") "You don't mind if I defeat them, yes?" No one uses defeat like that, it should be "beat up" or "harm" or anything, that's not how we use defeat. Same with that "yes", that's not there to sound good because most people say "do you?"; that's just there because the Japanese versions said "Nee" and we're dealing with total amateurs.

This is unprecedented, of all the threads on all the boards of this whole website and probably this whole fanbase on the internet, in no place they managed the threads like they did in the Neptunia General, in the nepgen that I used to love, it was perfect, it wasn't written in the rules that hetero of those 4 wasn't allowed and yet everyone worked as a team to keep the people that did out of the place, I joined this team on June 13th of 2013 and with the time this place became my home because it had everything I asked for in a videogame thread, a thread in which people actually talked about the games and the character interactions presented in the games, without derailing into talk about waifus and which girl is better than which or other no game related stuff that ignored the sexual orientation presented in the games of those 4 girls. It was a place in which the people actually knew the characters of the games they were playing and what they were, and a place like this couldn't be found anywhere else in the world. That's why this became my home. But then a year ago my home was invaded and today the invaders still refuse to leave. That's what this blog is for though, to kill the sins and make the threads have 0 sins, together we can make nepgen return to its glory days, together we can make this place return to be the only place in the internet that actually cared about the characters of the games they are from, together we can make my home become a good home for any person that is searching the same thing as me, again.
