Current campaign progress at turn 76. Sylvania continues to stabilize and I've done some ork stomping in the mountains in preparation for the Ghal Maraz quest battle. Chaos Warriors are active and the first chaos event has obviously happened, norscans are a bigger threat though, they actually sacked one of my towns before I got some armies in position to deal with them.

Whether or not you'll find the genre good is subjective, I'd recommend maybe pirating another title first to see if you like the concept. Otherwise wait for denuvo to crack or the steam sale.

Remember that there aren't many Warhammer factions in at the moment.
It's fairly easy to get into for a total war title, not really buggy, could do with a bit of balance; but it's been out for long enough to start expecting a patch soon.
It isn't really a difficult game up until a certain point where it's extremely difficult. You could always play on shitter settings and probably avoid that though.

Early game is harder than some other TW games because a lot of factions are surrounded by like 3 people they are at war with and things can move a bit fast on harder difficulties. I still believe that Shogun 2 is the best to start off with because the units are relatively easy to get the hang of, as you'll use one of the starting ones for pretty much the entire game. Warhammer might be a good second choice though because there's only two preset formations, less abilities for individual units, etc.

I really liked them in my vamp vh campaign. Great for sieges to fuck up dudes on the walls. Great at sniping siege units and ranged units, especially helpful against hell canons.

There's really not much reason to bring two wizards, the tiny amount of extra winds they each provide isn't enough to justify the slot and the lores are similar enough that the added versatility isn't any great shakes.

I'm also not sure I would bother with a captain when you could fill that slot with a unit of demigryphs

There is absolutely no point in savage orcs, they aren't really better than the regular guys and the AI is not spamming armor piercing only anyways.
So they just get fucked up by any kind of missiles.

Poison is largely ineffective, a minor debuff still won't get the kills in. Goblin Rider are fast but lack any kind of punch. Even mediocre ranged units will be able to fight them off in melee, making them largely useless because they don't really have any kind of target they can go up against.

The only viable way to play orcs is to create absolute shit tier stacks. Get a Lord and a catapult, then 4-5 regular orc archers and the rest just Boyz. Then you send two armies around together and spawn a Waagh for each one.

That'll overpower absolutely everything in auto resolve and is the only way to get the Orc concept (just swarm everything and make shit quality up with numbers) to work.

Which is pretty fucking boring but that is what it is.

Well I only brought up what I brought up because of my success with it in Legendary. Hell even night goblin fanatic ambushes demolished dwarves, despite the "fanatics are bad meme" which is pretty much true in all but the most rare cases. I rarely actually got to auto-resolve anything, and all of the battles I played were incredibly fun, if not absurdly difficult. Going into battles outmatched and just doing as much damage as possible so my next army can take them out, was a pretty fun way of approaching it. Savage orcs put in insane work for me in the campaign, and multiplayer but you're right in that the AI doesn't really spam armour piercing.

Chances are usually fucking terrible despite me using Naginata Attendants instead of the AIs levy spam but better than fighting battles with 3 morale units. Which is about what Orcs got.

This is my biggest gripe in the game. So much shit would be fairly easy to implement but the answer as to why it's not there is that it would require a modicum of effort. Copy pasted quest maps with no unique scenarios, actually good voice actors, animated walls being destroyed, blood and gore and matched animations (the current animations fucking suck and most look retarded, the animators should be fired), much more fluid combat compared to the clunky shit we have now, all of it is simply because they couldn't be fucked to put the effort in. Why couldn't lord duels be like in say black and white, why do people fly 100 feet and get back up, why not make every hit big creatures make and every explosion or charge actually kill them and just ramp up the number of mods. It all boils down to not wanting to put effort in.

If I do let it rest, I honestly won't pick it up back up again until autum-ish, perhaps later. Knowing the exact date of expansions, DLC packs and free DLC pieces would go a long way into allocating my time and finances better for this.

i started with empire and found it easier but that was only because you generally aren't in Total Warâ„¢ unlike the constant war you're going to be in with the Greenskins as Dwarfs. the difficulty with Dwarfs for me was that i would tend to go north after getting all of my first province rather than south, meaning Grimgor comes up and wrecks my shit and i'd have to restart, then i wouldn't really understand what i had done wrong and do everything the same. just go south and wipe out the Greenskins before you do anything else.

Also I find that the confederation system is shit, it makes all games endgame the same, big greenskin/dwarf blob at the south, norsca united in all but name, vampires don't suffer of that because of the few factions that exist, empire just confederates shit AI you took 5-8 turns to siege. etc.
For me this, coupled with having no need to fight any faction that you can't conquer cities for, is the biggest flaw of the game, all playthroughts end up being exactly the same, where you only fight 1, max 2 different races.

No, you're fucked. I ran into that exact same problem. In the Dwarf campaign, if you expand too fast, Grimgor and his buddies will come and fuck you in the butt. Caused me to lose a 37 turn campaign and restart.

When you restart, and you will when Grimgor destroys everything you own; each settlement you own needs an gold income of some source. Make your main captial in the silver roads, have an engineer/great quarreler unit source and leave the solider (Ironbeards, Shield Bearers) making aspect to the other lesser settlements since you only need a Rank 3 in a building to make the highest soldiers dwarves have. Also, make your main capital will NEED an armory since you require this to create Great Quarrelers which are the meat of your damage for most of the game.

When you go north for that first underway battle quest, keep going north and take the mine nearby. STOP RIGHT THERE, don't go further, then expand south ward at your own pace. You want to have 2 full stacks near the south mountain area cause that is where Grimgor and his buddies spawn, so it's only natural to conquer their area little by little. You kill two birds with one stone this way.

Lastly, in your Tech Tree, when you reach talents that need 6+ turns to complete, avoid them and do the other 3turn research trees. The reason for this, is that later talent trees only affect end game units, settlements, abilities etc and are a waste if you are do not have what they affect yet.

Try corner camping, and hide your cavalry away from the enemy army, only bringing them in when the enemy is committed to their attack. Also, try to kill the enemy commander if possible. Do you have any buff spells for your wizard? Does Karl have any of his leadership track related abilities yet? Both of those will help your men last longer before routing.

There is only one direction to defend, and in turn, attack. As the defender, just put people on the towers and where the attackers towers are going. That's it. You can nearly go AFK at that point.

As an attacker, you have to make it to the walls as soon as possible otherwise you'll get shredded by the towers. There's no pronged attacks where you spread the defenders out anymore, and the threat of artillery taking out unoccupied walls for quick cavalry infiltrations is completely gone, since the defender will always have all of the walls completely occupied. Not to mention almost every settlement follows this formula to the letter, so once you've played a couple siege battles, there's very little if any replayability to it.

Instead of wasting money on GW Quarrelers you use the regular ones. Dwarfs also don't get surrounded because they hunker down with strong Infantry on all sides.

Thunderers are also not that hard to use if you leave small gaps in your melee lines. The AI won't attempt to charge through (and can't anyways) cause the enemy infantry will get caught up in your own.

With 16 melee attack and defense those great weapons might as well be LARPer foam weapons, the shield blocks missiles and the added defense helps them last against melee enemies just a bit longer, which is what you need for your other 5 units of quarrelers to shoot the shit out of whoever managed to flank you.

No. You just build the Hut in every settlement alongside the gold building and walls. You don't want fucking rebellions all the way down south after you have managed to get control of all of the Badlands.

It is also the best way to deal with corruption which becomes a non issue for orcs since they need Huts everywhere to deal with public order.

I can't be bothered to write a novel on sieges, but a lot of what worked in previous games still work when adapted to the new environment. You'll probably find that you will lose a load of them all at once. On the higher difficulties enemy armies will seek you out anyway so you can usually wait for them to come to you and then defeat them in a siege or something. Every time I sent an army chasing after someone for a grudge it usually turned out badly.

Melee defense is alright against armor penetration, but in any other case - armor is more valuable. Melee defense is basically just your chance not to get hit - which if you pump it up a bunch, you'll have something like 25% chance to get hit by all attacks, only slightly increased by melee attack.

But yeah. Focus armor - if you have points to spare, melee defense isn't THAT bad, but I wouldn't feel pressured to put points into it.

You can easily just get a hero to get the same bonuses as your LL - but your LL, you want to be able to stack up against the enemy LL or that LL is going to thrash your units and make them rout no matter how many points you have in unit skills.

Chaos is piss easy for Dwarfs to deal with, what are you smoking. Those fuckers are so slow half their army is dead by the time they get into range to be killed by your iron breaker bombs.
Ungrim's last quest battle is the hardest fight against Chaos you'll ever have as dwarfs, and only because 5 Chaos Knights bumrush you from behind.

The only official units I can see being added are Questing Knights, which are Mounted Knights with two handed swords, and the Grail Pilgrims which are peasants carrying a dead grail knight.
CA could stretch it by adding foot Knights though, and hopefully peasant bowmen get flaming arrows and stakes.

Far too shallow. I've played every single Total War game, normally I'm spending weeks playing these games but I've done with this game, I haven't touched it since the first week.

If you're just after a Warhammer game, I think this will be fantastic for you, there's not that many good Warhammer Fantasy games out there.

If you're looking after a good Total War game, don't bother with this. The lessons of Rome 2 are completely unheeded with this, CA seem to have set out their stall and they're sticking to it. Rome 2, Attila and Warhammer have just continued down the road of streamlining all complexity out of their games.
I get they want the games to be accessible, but the tutorials and difficulty levels allow beginners to get into these games without taking out everything more serious fans, veteran players enjoy and even the beginners once they get to mid/end-game will find it shallow.

Because that's what this game is, shallow. The battles look fantastic, but they're over far too quickly, you don't get to admire the graphics and animations.
The engine is still the god awful one from the last couple of games so your units just end up as horrible blobs. The engine needs to go by the next game for certain.
The magic is not as impressive as they said it would be, certainly not game changing, mostly just more buffs and debuffs.
The AI actually however seems to have improved massively, I've not lost this many battles since Medieval 1.

The campaign map is pointless, a very simple puzzle game about where to place your buildings which you'll have solved by your third province anyway. There's no politics, there's barely any diplomacy or trade worth bothering with and there's just no interest in the campaign map other than getting to your next battle.

I hope they do much better in their next game.

The con is that most battles morph into a couple of blobs of units. In Attila you could have these sweet battle lines of shield walls and stuff, and battles were deeper when it came to formations and stuff.

Yeah the economy hasn't been getting better over the last few years. History buffs and warhammer fans with decent computers are largely similar numbers of people. That this has been at or near the top of the sales lists is largely due to the warhammer IP, but that doesn't mean investors are going to take a huge risk when most of the previous titles have been mediocre, with a notable few exceptions.

I take them just to role play a little bit!

The thing about zombies is they cause fear so you can get away with routing lines of spearmen with a rear cavalry charge when they have like 70% men left. Against more elite units they aren't really worth the army slot though. I always fill out armies that aren't already filled with real units though, especially since you can raise them right before the battle.

Out of all of the fucking documentaries on Hannibal, I consider that one to be pretty good. Besides some of the armor looking odd, it seemed to get most of its facts straight and didn't do the typical thing with making the Roman Legions look like they were from the Marian reform.
