I wish someone would make a joke romhack of Fates. All the Nohrmies would have english voices, but hoshidaboos would have JP voices, entering the bathhouse while the opposite gender is present would play a laugh track. All the Hoshidaboo text would be in engrish. Aqua would be called the dumbass she is by Corrin and Corrin would generally not be a pussy and actually have balls. There are several things I'd like to discuss, but it mostly has to do with the flow of the game. I feel Conquest 10, regardless of difficulty complaints, is the better designed map of Fates. The reason for that is that it emphasizes map control and positioning as a whole: you have to choose where to send your units and hold a position, if you happen to lose it, you risk being overrun. Spread too thin, however, and you end up overwhelmed in all fronts. In contrast, most maps feature variations of "form a murderball, move forward without exposing your weaker units and aggro enemies with the tanks". Then you have to kill the enemies without really letting them fight back.

This promotes some nice micromanagement but throws strategy per se out of the window. In my opinion, the game would be much more challenging, in a good way, if I had spendable, no-name units to lose every map, as I would be forced to handle them in an efficient way while still being unable to save all of my troops, all of the time. As it stands, most of the time you win by a huge margin or you don't at all; it also happens that most non-reinforcement based maps start out with you in a very disadvantageous position which gets better overtime, with little catharsis.

Some other things I was considering (which I have implemented in a Java text version, moving to Unreal C++ pending) were engagement and height mechanics, more active skills and resources for "hero" units and longer ranges for ranged attacks that require you to skip a movement to increase accuracy or even attack at all.

What if the next FE gas time traveling like shenanigans, but with a twist? The present day army is at war with an enemy, and chapters roll on; however we get chapters based on the past that affect the present by choices you make. Something like chrono trigger. Before you advance further to another place, you'll see previous heroes making choices if different outcomes.

I understand it kind of defeats the appeal of having supports with all your units and all, but I feel that this really hampers the gameplay. I like me some waifus as much as the next anon, I'm simply considering different mechanics that would make a non-FE turn and grid-based strategy game challenging and fun.

Feel free to pick at any of the ideas, it is not an orderly not comprehensive post. Bottom line is: I would like to shift the emphasis from micromanagement to map control and strategy, trying to add pressure on the player as a result.

I mostly don't like that you feel forced to save all your units, it hinges on rock-paper-scissors and some RNG more than it does map positioning.

I'd find it enjoyable if I had to split my units to, say, defend certain positions from a horde of attackers while trying to take down a specific unit in another part of the map. It gets particularly interesting if you manage to balance it so that you start to be overrun in one or more fronts when you're about to reach the target. It's just an example, and there's obviously need for cozier maps too, but you get where I'm coming from.

Good review as always, but I think you didn't properly emphasized the utility Elise has.

First of all, Troubadour has naturally helpful skills for allies. Demo/Genti, Rally Res, and Inspiration are all geared towards boosting other units, and Elise's personal synergizes great with them.

But Elise also has Wyvern Lord as a reclass option, allowing her to get Rally Def. And she naturally gets Rally Res from Strategist. And she can A+ with Azura to get Rally Spd. Then she can marry a husband to get Rally Str (if you're smart) or Rally Skl (if you're not). Combined with her personal skill and Inspiration, this allows Elise to greatly buff her allies' offenses and defenses (She can also get Rally Lck from Sakura by forfeiting Rally Spd from Azura, but who would do that?). And, on top of all that, she naturally heals. So she practically bleeds utility.

Overall, she's probably the best magic user in Fates, even if she doesn't become one until late game. She's pretty much Nyx but better, which is a shame for Nyx. Plus, her accuracy issues can be solved by Takumi and Certain Blow and he defense issues can be solved with Effie and being a General, as you said. Shame there isn't a good class for her that gives def and hp without wasting growths on str, and that magic classes are pretty much uniformly shit.
