I need some new goals in this game. I want to play it but every time I log in I find myself sitting around for a bit before logging out again. The only two things that keep me logging in are fractals and raids.

raids are the only way to get legendary armor, but for the most part the only rewards you can get from raids that you cant get anywhere else are unique skins and certain special drops worth loads of cash.
If you want to play a condition build, viper trinkets and backpiece only come from raids as well, for some reason.

Rewards are good.
You're able to earn 100 of a currency a week with chances at earning more by turning in miniatures or salvaging ascended weapons you get as drops. You can turn in the currency for any raid drop if you were after a specific skin or ascended gear.

Each boss gives a fair amount of gold, rares, and a guaranteed exotic. There are minis, boss specific weapon skins, ascended armor, ascended trinkets with stats you can only get from the raid, and a few other boss specific drops.

There's also legendary armor which should be coming out soon that you have to do the raid to earn

they've more or less fixed everything but the difficulty, which is still pretty minimal UNTIL you get to the expansion.
Skill trees have been remade, most of them from the ground up, and the progression system has been completely redone.
In general the game is far more balanced now, but aside from fixing the base game and living story stuff they havent done much aside from release new skins on the gem store.

If you're going to ask a question like that then you should be a little more specific.

If you don't have the expansion it isn't going to look like much has changed. Most parts of the game have been changed in some fashion, but you'll need the expansion to get the most out of it.
PvP has seasons and a ranking system along with new ways to earn rewards. You'll need HoT to be competitive, elite specs are too powerful.
PvE has a few new legendaries, fractal rebalances, tons of new skins, and if you haven't played since release a full new gear tier, ascended. There's also a raid.
WvW is a work in progress. Most changes have been QoL fixes. A major overhaul is in effect and is rolling out in small pieces over time.

Honestly there's too much shit to list off. Everything has changed to some extent.

In raids you usually run 1-2 healers but tanking and aggro isn't always consistent. Usually you either heal or run some sort of DPS (power or conditions).

In zergs for WvW some classes will also run as a tankier frontliners or healers.

In WvW, General PvE, and PvP? No. In raids? Sort of.
A couple raid bosses require tanks, all of them require a healer, and the only class that qualifies as pure support is chronomancer which is also a staple in all groups. Every other slot is filled by some form of damage/support through abilities.

Most classes have their uses. All I can think of is that engineer is one of the least useful classes in PvE/WvW but is good in PvP. It's still okay so even with that said it's still perfectly viable.

Right now a number of MMOs are happily coexisting. FFXIV, GW2 and WoW id say are the biggest in the west and their relationship is a bit like a love triangle. (Except it isnt really love, you know what I mean).
Right now these three MMOs seem to satisfy most people. For example when a game like Wildstar comes out, the market isn't really there.

I can't comment on eastern MMOs other than that in the west, they satisfy smaller niche markets, although Final Fantasy is an exception because its fucking Final Fantasy.

No, the weapon clashing thing is one of the myths in-universe about the Foefire. I think it's the Ascalonian/Human take on it, because the Charr version includes the Fireshadows and how they discovered what Adelbern planned (and Flame's Imperator punishing them, pushing on inward and getting fucking obliterated by the Foefire while the Fireshadows watched from their punishment-post.)

It basically is the truth. The same place where they reveal these two sides to the story, the Ghosts of Ascalon novel, (early on in the book, comparing their folktales about it or w/e) the heroes later encounter the ghost of one of Adelbern's advisors or something. He's not violent and not a Foefire ghost, because Adelbern stabbed him to death when he tried to warn him away from his "turn all my subjects into ghosts and subject to eternally reliving this day as a hell worse than anything the charr could subject them to" plan. And he basically confirms that the Flame Imperator basically got nowhere near Adelbern before he finished his ritual and reduced that assaulting army to ash and then had his now ghostly subjects toss the Claw in his personal vault.
