I only used it to get all the Grandmaster sets tho.

I want to do all the quests in order of level and i'm up to the DLC's.

I've gotten Hearts of Stone DLC's up to level 35, and i'll soon be swapping back and forth between Blood & Wine and Hearts of Stone, but my Main Quest Line is back at level 29.

Should I do the Main Quests and catch them up?
I would really prefer to do this, but i don't want to sequence break. I'd like to do whatever is best for the story.

You don't really need to play 1 or 2 to understand 3, reading the books would actually be a better choice in that department. a decent amount of lore is explained in the in-game books as well. 1's story has no bearing at all on 3's aside from a few characters and a call-back at a bookstore that will mean literally nothing if you aren't familiar with Alvin (there's also a few characters and a weapon from 1 that return in B&W). 2 is basically a setup for 3, but there's nothing in it that is imperative to understanding 3's story.

I'd recommend it but it's not necessary. There's as many, if not more references to the book than the other games, so most people were pretty lost at first anyway.
Plus TW1's combat hasn't aged well and the voice acting is terrible, so it might be hard to go through if you aren't dedicated or an old-school gamer.

Definitely worth it if you can get through them though.

So leveling up in TW1 and 2 seemed pretty easy and straight forward but somehow the leveling in TW3 is confusing me. I wish there was an actual manual. I'm not sure I follow what you're asking. You get a point each level and a point with each place of power. You definitely won't be hurting for them come end game if you invest consistently in two skills. You can also respec with a potion, so its fine to play around.

A mix of alchemy and combat is probably your best bet. Leveling quen can be pretty useful as you can make the first form fuck enemies up when it breaks, but the problem is with the severe limit you have to how many skills you can have active. Also, most of the best alchemy skills are locked in the last tier and require a pretty big investment, so if you go that rout you'll want to be pretty committed. I found using the skill that increases critical chance with adrenaline points, upgrading the alchemy skills that increase critical chance, and increasing the light attack skills made my char pretty op. Using Greater red and green mutagens in conjunction with your combat and alchemy skills can also give you very helpful boost to vit and attack power, whereas the sign intensity boosts that blues give you are generally less helpful and more boring imo.

Haven't done that quest yet, but I'd say the worst one is "Stranger in a strange land" or whatever it is. You automatically get knocked on your ass mid-fistfight, your friend gets killed before you can do anything, then you get thrown into a prison, and, finally, the Jarl declares you guilty no matter what so you can do his side quest in return. I honestly don't really mind the rest as much, even if I could probably pay their goddamn weight in gold or take on the whole village, but it's getting thrown on my ass by two fucking sheepherders mid-fight, regardless of the fact that I'm beating the shit out of them, that pisses me off. It's all armor, not just the chest piece. Cat School Technique + Levity Ursine Armor works great. But once you get Grandmaster set bonuses though, yeah, Feline goes in every slot.
