I finally fixed mining content

After years of trying to come up with an idea that fixes the unfixable, I finally did it

Firstly, no more lasers. Instead, the new mining modules are now mini-drones that cut in the rock and plant bombs to separate the waste from the mineral vein, as in real life. You have an exploration-tier minigame which shows you a huge 3d model of the asteroid, and gives you control over the drones and which sections you decide to nuke. The point of this is to reduce the size (and m3 volume) of the asteroid so your ship can pull it in its cargohold, but also be careful not to bomb away the valuable (randomized) minerals contained in it. If are botting it, you'll end up with a lot of useless unprocessable asteroid waste and you'd be basically wasting your time.

Now, the most important part. There's an empty skill book called "Driller Drone Expertise", can contain up to 500k SP and the book itself gives no bonuses or effects. Every successful pull rewards you a certain amount of SP in that book (as a RP effect of your character learning). It is evaluated by the pulled percentage of waste versus percentage of minerals. The higher the mineral/waste ratio is, the more SP you're rewarded, while the statistically average pulls give you no SP.

By doing that:
>1) CCP introduces a "captcha" to mining that fully prevents botting and makes it unprofitable
>2) Makes it actually somewhat fun and not repetitive to mine, as it adds a gambling mechanism to it
>3) The reward of mining is greatly increased to match the other safe highsec activities, such as station trading and mission running. You get the mineral value AND skillpoints in a useless book which you can extract and sell for a lot. Also, botters being gone means a moderate increase in mineral price, which means even more profit for miners

i think it's a fairly common thought pattern to propose a minigame (like explo) to "fix" mining, and in one since I think it's a reasonable idea. As such, your concept of the minigame is interesting and the first time i've actually seen an attempt to come up with a relevant minigame.

i don't see why the "most important part" - the sp book - is related at all; it seems like a totally different, sp-related mechanic that doesn't have much to do conceptually with mining and that you just sort of tacked on. You justify it by giving it as a way to reward above-average performance at the game, but the increase mineral yield should already do that just fine.

All this being said, a common counterargument to the "minigame" suggestion is that there should exist some kind of afk activity for the people that want to play in that way, in order to maintain diversity in the sandbox. putting in a minigame will make the people who like exploration already more likely to mine, but won't do anything for the people who already mine. You might argue that it would allow newbie miners to make more money compared to what they make in the face of the current multiboxed mining fleets - but it does this by forcing them to do basically what exploration currently does. Why not simply ask the newbros to do exploration as things are now, instead of putting in a massive set of changes?

Personally, I think of mining (as it currently stands) as high-level content that is continually mislabeled as new player friendly. To me, the main problem with mining is that it tricks new players into doing it who don't know what they're getting into (a high-competition, high-investment market) - and not at all the fact that it scales very well with multiboxing.

It provides the miner with another source of reward - another way of spiking his dopamine levels, and is one which can't be blown up and plundered. I was thinking about a rare mineral or something like that contained in the very core that costs a lot, like a high quality item drop in a fantasy MMO, but that'd be pointless as it will have to be included in most blueprints to simulate a demand and a lot of changes will have to be made to adapt it to the game, and everything would be more expensive as an effect.

No, the current state of highsec mining is what's bad and needs a buff, and has needed one since at least 2009. The problem is that A LOT of newbies get attracted to this game to chill and punch asteroids, and once they realize how repetitive and unprofitable it actually is, they quit. That's a problem that affects the whole game, not just highsec.

Perfect example of I like this and I don't like this and screw the truth. EVE is not your standard MMO/video game. I'll respond just to part on mining... First he left off how incredibly important mining is to the game as a whole as EVERYTHING player produced IN the game (and that's the vast majority of ALL the products available in the game) depend on mining. Without it, EVE would grind to a halt. And as it is hugely important, it seems there are probably a few more than just "2" miners... and obviously all those miners are out there playing every single day... thousands of them. The gameplay is not just "target rock - press F1", there's drones and rats and salvage and watching for local spikes and working out of the client on those infamous spreadsheets and chatting on comms with the rest of the guys you are mining with and running haulers or a Orca... etc. etc. etc. ALL of which the reviewing asshat completely left out. He took a look at an immensely complex game and gameplay and left out a HUGE amount of the details... the details of which ARE the gameplay... not just target press F1. Id10t. This is one seriously fecked up review that will act to push people away from one of the best and most immersive MMOs on the fecking market... Thanx, butthead.

In case of player pirates you want to fucking run. If you are on-grid when they show up you're probably dead. The prospect of a lucky jam is enticing, but that's mostly only gonna work on dumbass highsec gankers. Stay aligned to a celestial, watch local and mash that d-scan button. You can't jam NPC rats and your drones should be able to deal with them, maybe. I would fit a little tank instead of jams.

To answer your question using any offensive module on a player will give you a combat timer, and if you jam someone before they are flagged to you it will activate gate guns or if it's high sec you'll get concorded.

A single neut can cap out a frig before his gang arrives, losing point.
