Dominions is a fantasy turn-based strategy game created by two dudes. One of them is a teacher.

The game combines a simple presentation with an extremely wide array of strategic options, including over 2800 units, 800 spells and 300 magic items. Turns are resolved simultaneously, with players planning battles rather than directly controlling them.

It has simplistic graphics but is easily moddable and extremely deep.

Basically, it's an autist’s wet dream of a strategy game.

It's entirely possible, just way beyond my abilities. The giant animu heads are literally just their heads made so large that they cover their entire body, for example, and I'm not sure if those wings were also part of the head model. Actually sticking things to players' hands is possible, but more complicated than just modding their head.

And of course, we'd need actual 3d models for it. We're lucky to have what we have, it was all made by other people.

Well I can tell you from experience that the absolute most important thing is for your enemy's ally to backstab him without warning and give you the breathing room you need to reach endgame.

Other than that, I've been working on my LA Abysia pretender design. I really like EB paths so I can break into Earth magic a lot more easily and Maneater is a fantastic awake expander. Seriously, just slam him into whatever and he'll most likely deal with it just fine between fear and awe. I've been thinking something like 4E3B, for the reinvig on all your holy mages and getting your magics online but that's pretty expensive with the Dom 9 you want to awake expand. Haven't really figured out the scales balance yet.

Not that Abysia needs an awake expander by any means, I just had a lot of success with mine and think it can be a handy option.

Well, let's talk about production scale. I know such a change isn't moddable but if Illwinter were to change production scale, what kind of change (if any) would you like to see? I've seen a number of suggestions to buff it (like +-1/2/3 turns to fort construction time) but what about if it affected fort cost by a modest amount (like +-5/10/15%)?

I'm not sure that's a solution. I mean it definitely makes Production more attractive, but it doesn't fix Production's main issue, which is that it loses relevance in the long run. Early on Production is pretty nice, because it lets you churn out more/bigger expansion parties. But later on it becomes far less relevant because resources stop being a real bottleneck and its income bonus gets outperformed by both Order and Growth. Adding a bonus to fort construction (whether by speeding it up or making it cheaper), makes it even better in the short term, but doesn't do much to help its long-term potential since mid- and especially lategame generally doesn't see much fort construction. It becomes more about taking the enemy's forts than about building your own.

So while it definitely helps, it just makes Production even more into an early-game focused pick.

What if you tied Production to unit upkeep? There's some (tangential) precedent for this since units use province resources to replace rusted/destroyed armor, so you could say that Production scales helps with shit like that and in/decrease upkeep by like 1% per scale. It's something minor that has virtually no effect on the early game, but over time it can really add up especially in the lategame, making it more and more relevant in the long run.

However, now that I think about it, you could think of it something along the lines of troops in the land of sloth neglecting the maintenance of equipment so it needs more paid work by local professionals/camp followers.

Order allows you to build secondary forts earlier and with 4-6 adjencent provinces, unless they're all farmland, gives a respectable amount of resources to capital even with neutral scales. It's not even early game centric for almost every nation, really, more like first half a year.

EA Hinnom, and the other Jew nations to a lesser degree, are plagued by having powerful units that eat population. For a Blood nation especially, this is absolutely disastrous. If you can get a decent bloodgame going and survive into the endgame as Hinnom, their ridiculously powerful, borderline unkillable SC summons WILL win you the game, but with your population dropping like a rock, you're likely to die midgame with lagging money, resources, and blood slaves. Even Early Game is a challenge. This is compounded by the fact that despite being giants, their units aren't all that good.

You can stick them in a wasteland since they don't actually need supplies. Your researchers aren't going to be the actual hungry giants themselves, they're the other, smaller giants that happen to be decent mages anyway. The other option is to just go full scales and ignore the rephaites, and use dawn guard as your main troops instead since they're actually fairly decent.

1. Don't recruit Ba'als. They have very limted use and you'll never need 1-3 tops for certain spells/forging duty. It's almost always better to go for Melqarts if you need a blood mage.

2. your FAES 200% mage is actually a very good battle mage and can carry you for awhile due to their High HP and decent fighting ability. If you can squeeze A4 on your pretender chassis of choice it makes the A2s a lot better and you can basically become a psuedo-T strike nation.

IF you rely on your reserach/battle mages and chariots early on you can survive till early mid game. If you get boosters for your A's and Get strong E magic you have a real shot making it till end game, especially if you get a E2 melqart which will be your go-to SC chassis

Is it really worth it to get an A4 bless when you only get the A2 mage variant 25% of the time?

I know you spam a lot of them, so you're bound to get a few but it seems weird to spend points on that.

Kinda stuck on pretender design atm actually. I think growth 3 is a given, but I'm not sure if I should go for scales/big bless/awake expansion pretender is the best way to go. I get a lot of mixed info from reading forum posts about Hinnom. Lot of people say the sacred troops are unsustainable/not worth their cost.

you don't get the A4 for the bless. You get it for the booster. the S/F/Es can boost themselves up but the A2s will always be reglated to crap duty unless you get that one guy who can cast storm, so you either rely on your A4 hero or get a pretender to forge A4 or the Winged helm Air booster.

Also Scales are a given, your a nation is hungry for gold 24/7. I go O3P2/H3/G3 minimal. You consider dom 5/6 since you can sacrifice and you won't be recruiting sacreds anyway.

Typical builds are N9 full scales, N9E4 with good scales, A4 Pure scales, or just plan old super scales

Obviously you recruit all three. Basalt Kings because they're great, str and cap only so you need to recruit them constantly to have enough. Mages of the Deep because that's what your other UW forts can make and you need lots of mages. Plus they can get astral and do some useful things with that. Any indie mage with an actual higher gold-to-RP-ratio usually also has non-national paths, so you should get them as well.

You won't be able to recruit Fomorian Kings/Nemedian Sorceressess in every castle every turn anyway. On the other hand, Abysia could recruit almost exclusively Warlocks and Warlock Apprentices, which would give them both amazing research (on a nation with incredibly easy access to lightless lanterns) and very strong battlemages.

This is extremely niche, but against MA Agartha, it's occasionally useful for death nations to make a bunch of Bows of Botulf set to Fire: Large to take out their oracles (since it will target them and not any of the size 3 or below dudes).

Since you have the bows against them anyways, you'll occasionally have them firing on statues which can feeblemind them. It's not a big deal there, since the only statues that this has a major effect on are the H2 dudes since it prevents them from self blessing, but that's not generally important.

A2 guys can be your T-strike casters, like your Airya Seraphs (which you can also build if you know you absolutely do need your T-strikers). D2 guys can be skellyspammers, which is great for raiding since you can fly two of them in, and also combos well with a T-strike or archer backline since you already have ways of dishing out damage. The E1 guys will be lab rats at first, and then will become RoS casters so that your kings don't need to be used for that if you don't need magic movement.

Great idea, Airya Seraphs only good while you are relying on T-strikes and Frozen Hearts and it's smart to have some of them. But in the long run Harab Seraphs are far better, they can Disintegrate, sceletspam, do crafting, T-strikes, create Corpse Constructs and they are tad bit cheaper.
So basically, up to the early midgame your main mage is Airya Seraph, but eventually you are stop buying them and go for the Harab Seraphs.

Random paths on the land mage are WESN as well.

Both mages seem a bit weak to me. Maverni mainly uses druids to support their massed S1 with some variety, not as their primary mage. The randoms are a bit too spread out to make them your primary mage.

Having to use only those is going to be rough, especially with a lack of cheap communion fodder. You have the same issue with the UW mage too.

Also, this is a strong earth magic nation. Their out of cap mages are S1E1 (WESN)1 on coasts and W1E1 (WESN1)1 underwater. While the land mages are obviously better, both get E2 pretty frequently.

They get up to A4 without 10% randoms, so they don't need a pretender to make hats, which is nice, but those big mages will be reserved for big battle support like fog warriors and so on.

If their princesses weren't cap only StR, they'd be great thugs. Since they're competing with your A3+ mages for recruitment slots, you'll probably never bother with them.

Rarity of the certain event which labled not as 'always' is totally unexpectedly random. So it totally varies from game to game. Nothing apart from statistics from several long games with diferent event frequency settings and Misf/Luck scales, won't allow you to understand who common certain event is. I'll be trying out Ys next chance I get for MP, but my read on them is actually different from yours. While they have elves in their cap, they're really not at all an elf nation.

Their workhorse coastal mage is S1E1, which means that they'll be able to field Gifts from Heaven communions (not as well as TC, but enough to have strong midgame evo). Their UW mages are much less good, with w/e base. They're cheap enough that you can use them as lab rats and a quarter of them are E2, which is useful for buffing, but you clearly prefer coastal forts to UW forts for mage production.

With your cap supersacreds being killing machines on land and about as good as your 50g knights underwater, you're encouraged to push out onto land with your expansion parties as well. Given that your coastal mages are better, you want coastal forts. Since your coastal mages and troops aren't amphibious, you're also slightly encouraged to build up along one coast rather than spread out to all sides of the water, except as a result of opportunistic expansion.

In other words, they're more like a weird coastal nation that happens to start UW. They have reasonably efficient evo mages backed up by big air magic for big air battlefield spells, so they should do fine in midgame fights. Earth magic is pretty good at fighting UW too, since the Meld spells, buffs, and earth elementals still work while a lot of evo is turned off. They have excellent expansion on land with their supersacreds and UW expansion tends to be much less competitive, so they should do well early if they aren't facing a Pelagia that wants to sit on their cap on turn 5. I don't expect them to be Ermor-tier strong, but they definitely don't look weak.

Ys has a bit of a wonky feel to them. Just about every commander you make is sacred, and you benefit from a strong bless. But with your one sacred unit being so expensive, they don't actually need a very high dominion- with even just 6 you'll run out of resources more often than you run out of sacred points, and that's with three points in production. (And you want three points in production- the coastal fort troops are very expensive well. Everything that isn't a spearman memer eats a ton of resources.)

The amount of dependence on the capital feels crippling. I wish at least the Morgen Champion was available outside cap, since there's little reason to ever make her as-is.

Not many aquatic nations fight so capably outside of the water though, so their underwater start feels like an advantage instead of consigning them to the irrelevant pool like with R'yleh.

It makes them MUCH more killy, though. More attacks = more flame strikes. While they get exhausted more quickly in terms of turn count, they don't get exhausted more quickly in terms of numbers of attacks they're putting out. Nature does a lot to keep Ys sacreds alive- Nature is always a great bless. Their damage output on land is so great you just want regen/reinvigoration to keep them going.

F12 works on steam for me, and it's what I usually use. I'm not sure why it wouldn't work for you.

I've noticed printscreen acting wierdly as well, which is why I use F12. Alt-tabbing right before using printscreen sometimes works for me.

Steam might let you rebind F12 to something else.

If neither of those works for you, you could try looking into some free video recording software. They should have some way to take a screenshot.

They're a lot less vulnerable to arrows than jaguars, so I like to recruit some for the frontlines in fights. Smart enemies are likely to be throwing lots of arrows at you, so it's nice to have something which can take it.

You could use normal nonsacred troops instead, but those won't do half as well in melee combat if you have a decent bless.

I dunno, I never really used eagles myself. They have even worse squishiness issues than jaguars, and you get ozelotl to fill your flying needs pretty early.

B9 or F9 are commonly used, both of which are good for eagles.

Even with N9B9 they're pretty decent for a 16 gold troop. The main use of them would probably be screwing with enemy formations by attacking rear, and they don't need to be amazing fighters for that to work (though it does help if they are).

I just think you'll get more use out of sun warriors since you can replace eagles with ozelotl. You can't really replace armored sacreds until you get protection buffs (which requires breaking into earth and getting high research).

I'm not sure how other people view it, but here's my opinion. I could be wrong, so you might want to ask when the next thread goes up.

Barkskin is a risky buff. The protection increase can be a nice (but not amazing) boost for troops without natural protection, but it gives -5 fire resistance. If your enemy starts using fire magic in a fight where you've cast Wooden Warriors it will probably end very badly for you.

Flaming Arrows makes it especially bad, since all the enemy needs to ruin your day is a single F2+ mage and a ton of archers. A lot of nations which can't field massed fire magic can field enough of it to cast Flaming Arrows, and Flaming Arrows is amazing even if your enemy doesn't have barkskin.

I think the negatives of barkskin almost always outweigh the protection and I almost never use it. I go for stoneskin/ironskin instead, which give much more protection and have less dangerous weaknesses.

All you need for lategame is a troll king with earth boots to cast army of lead or army of gold. Both of those hit the entire army, so one troll king with each major force is sufficient.

A few troll kings should be well within your capabilities if you don't get really unlucky with earth gems, and if you're lucky you might find some recruitable earth mages and not even need troll kings.

Barkskin is very much a "once" tactic. It's good if the enemy doesn't counter it, but basically anyone can counter it and turn it against you. Use it to win a battle where you know the enemy won't bring Fire, then forget you have it until they stop fielding Fire again.

You should definitely get some, but use them as specialists rather than replacing your whole army with them.

Jaguar warriors are a lot more expendable so use them as your main infantry, and use your ozelotl only where you really need extra offensive power or flying.

You could get a tlahuelpuchi (B2 assassin mage) for slightly less than 6 ozelotl worth of slaves (9 if you use rain of jaguars).

Newish player here, trying to learn a few EA nations to break into a multiplayer game down the road, and I'm learning EA Hinnom right now.

I've read some posts that say that you should be able to close out the game as Hinnom once you get late game blood research, which I assume means Grigori SC's and devil spam.

I'm just stuck on how to kit out the Grigori so they can fly over to thrones and swipe them up to win the game. They get locked down by chaff and eventually die after hitting max fatigue.

I don't have much experience with what items to go for, and I just gave them items the wiki recommended for building thugs/SC's that I had access to, like rainbow armor/MR trinkets/etc.

I guess this strategy is also countered if my opponents fort up the thrones and I wanted to know what I could do to counter that as well.

Unless the enemy is using spells that cause fatigue damage, this should never happen. The basis of all SC strats is making sure they stay at 0 or at least <50 fatigue forever using reinvigoration or lifedrain effects/items.

Second, players will indeed fort their thrones after they've lost a game or two to someone swiping a bunch of thrones at ones, and you need to figure out a way to get enough siege chaff on thrones to win. Typically you use SCs to gain economic and tactical advantage rather than straight up win, especially as even the strongest SC can always be killed by a competent player.

Honestly in most games you won't even see Grigori, let alone need to brush up on special tactics for them. Focus on learning how to use the mages and troops.

I asked earlier in a previous thread about Hinnom and I remember someone saying they had great early game with chariot expansion, and that if you were able to make it through mid/early late game you should be a strong contender to win. Steam forums sort of echoed that a little.

Again I don't have too much knowledge of the metagame since I've been learning this game from reading and playing with friends in the same boat/A.I.

First off, don't let your SC's cast spells rather than fight at the end of scripting, since they'll exhaust themselves casting spells which makes them much easier to hit and crit. If your reinvigoration is above their encumbrance they shouldn't be getting tired in melee unless they're getting hit by stuff like ghost grip or stellar cascades. If you've been putting quickness items on them that makes them attack twice as often and so doubles the amount of fatigue they get as well, so keep that in mind.
A true SC is going to be able to drop a spell that continuously clears stuff from the battlefield, like firestorm, so that the numbers they are facing don't matter as much. They shouldn't be taking any significant damage from normal units at all if you put the right items on them.

Maybe post a screenshot of what your grigori looks like with all the gear on them and what you're scripting for them, as well as the thrones that they're having trouble with.

Here's one that's survived, I've been playing around with them, so 4 of them have died so far.

This one got wounded by an A.I. army however, and they don't even consciously try to counter him, so he'd probably be dead in a mutliplayer game.

This is how I've been sending him around.

They don't take much damage from normal units, they just hit max fatigue and die after many turns of combat with 50 men hitting them per turn, so eventually a hit connects and deals damage.

Switch your hell sword for a fire brand and vine shield. Those are standard issue for thugs and SCs unless you're planning something specific.

Also don't tell him to just cast spells at the end, tell him to fight. Casting spells all fight long just wrecks your fatigue. You can probably lose the earthquakes as well since they cost a lot of fatigue and most of the shit that an earthquake clears can't really do anything to an SC anyway.
