Dominions is a fantasy turn-based strategy game created by two dudes. One of them is a teacher.

The game combines a simple presentation with an extremely wide array of strategic options, including over 2800 units, 800 spells and 300 magic items. Turns are resolved simultaneously, with players planning battles rather than directly controlling them.

It has simplistic graphics but is easily moddable and extremely deep.

Basically, it's an autist’s wet dream of a strategy game.

T-strike has a fairly high base fatigue cost and stuff like Fog Warriors is even higher, so without boosters he'll get exhausted quickly.

That's wrong. The fatigue is decreased to 1/(extra levels +1). So A8 would be casting thunderstrike for roughly 1/6 fatigue, which is about 7 fatigue per thunderstrike. Add 3 encumbrance and he's taking 10 fatigue per cast, or 40 per turn.

The Math nerds only magic weapon troops have MR (hard to resist) negates, so there's that.
Both of the Dorf nations have good magic weapons on their sacreds.
The Empire has Lightsabers on their sacreds.
The Dreki lack magic weapons until their dragons hatch.

Doom has Banefire Bolts, Lightning strikes, and Fireballs. All with 1 Res cost, yikes.

I think cataclysm would bring out the "throw everything and anything at the undead apocalypse" atmosphere, but if other people want to play normal, MA nations against #OPErmorPlsNerf I'd join that game too.

When I phrase it like that, it makes me think, "Ya, just what I want to do with MA nations, fight against Ermor yet again." So maybe that's the thing: playing versus the best nation in the game in the worst age is what truly makes fighting Ermor suck. How about a modified one age game, with all non-redundant EA and MA nations? Isn't that what heralded the end of the EA anyway, Ermor's destruction? So wouldn't Lanka, EA Xibalba, Helheim and such nations still be around to fight before Ermor unshers in the MA? Imagine a scenario not unlike the very fall of Ermor!

I mainly like it because the sprites are amazing, but the way it does ranged troops is interesting too. Their only ranged weapons are javelins, but their javelin troops have significant improvements to precision and damage, on top of dealing fatigue damage on hit. It makes them surprisingly lethal, though I'm not sure how it'd hold up in a larger battle.

I'd like to see their troops get a buff, though. Their units all have coldpower and terrible base stats outside the water, leaving them barely acceptable in cold3. It basically feels like you need to spread your dominion to any land province you want to take.

I think a far better way of doing it would be to set up a scenario such that Ermor controls 30% of the map, the other nations cover 50% of the map between them, and the remaining 20% is indie buffer zones. All nations should, assuming sane expansion, wind up bordering Ermor. That way Ermor is a fightable opponent and likely to (eventually) lose but can go all-out instead of trying to cripple themselves just right. .

Giving them an identity besides being bad underwater Pangaea would be preferable. A2W1 Sirens on land would be a start if they had the means to cast Storm for some Thunder Strike action, but I don't know of a thematic way to implement this. Some sort of Siren Queen, maybe?

Letting them catch up a bit on Pangaea's strengths would be a band-aid fix. For starters, they're paying 55g more for a far inferior big mage: 2/3 of their randoms are worthless for fuck's sake, never mind Earth being superior to Water (especially considering Pan has super-buffable Reveler while Oceania doesn't benefit nearly as much from their access to N buffs due to their weaker troops).

I think that increasing their random to 100% while keeping their price the same would make Capricorns great mages. In addition to having up to E3 on land for earthquakes and A1E2 for RoS (with boots in summod), you would also have the occasional A2 capricorn for cloud trapeze thugging or mobile mage support and even N5 capricorns if you ever felt that N4 base just wasn't enough.

I'd like to see them hit a lot harder in melee. If you want to effectively flank someone your flankers need to be able to kill things quickly, before your enemy wins the fight. Right now cavalry can't do that. After their charge is used up, their offense is pretty shit, and they don't take buffs well either.

If you buffed their offense they'd also fill a niche which human nations desperately need filled - powerful melee troops for lategame.

A change I'd like to see but can't mod is additional mobility on the strategic map. If armies with sufficient movement points could attack non-adjacent enemy provinces (like flying, but without being able to move through enemy provinces) the extra strategic movement on cavalry could let them be used in raiding parties.

Well, what do you mean by flavour nations? If you mean taking various existing units, giving them different skins and making a new nation with them, just use the #copystats monster command to lift them then have the spritegen stuff in a nearbyr folder for spr1 and spr2 to link to. Casting non-blood rituals or crafting non-blood items causes the mage to be assassinated by a Horror. Battlefield magic is still safe even if you use gems, but it pretty much puts magic rituals on total lockdown (or rather, you can still craft and cast things but expect to lose the mage doing it). As an added bonus, Call (Lesser) Horror spells are buffed.

Since, it's easy to overcast blood rituals with hundreds of slaves, it's not efficient to dispel it either. You pretty much have to kill the caster.

I have finally successfully gotten enough Air gems from Trades and double catalyzing Fire gems to have some A2 mages to finish site-searching my land for the last kind of gem I need to sift through them for. In the meantime I get to watch Lanka eat Pan and Abysia, while Niefelheim successfully sets up a base on the other side of the map to finish eating Ermor with everyone else. At some point in the future, I may be attacked by others in my campaign for President of Oerida, but have no qualms retaliating against the individuals that do so.

Here you go. 250 provs for 15 players. I'd recommend no UW nations, but you might be able to get away with one. Ermor starts with its whole cap circle, 3 free forts, and a bunch of free troops and commanders, including a Dusk Elder & an Archbishop. If that's not enough to be supercharged, then I don't know what is.

Sacred F9B9 Flying Demons (even if they are a bit shit) vs longdead. And Armageddon squishes priests while Onaqui deal with it just fine.

I'll put ALL my money on the Beast Bats. And that's before accounting for Ozelotls > Lankan National Units by a huge fucking margin.

In a normal game, I'd be inclined to agree that Dakini > summoned Onaqui, but in giant ass, long ass games, DomSummon is a stupidly broken mechanic. Especially when only one out of Xibalba and Lanka can blood sac.

I'm not sure how well priests will work in a post-armageddon world, but they cost almost nothing in upkeep and most memegame nations have managed a decent income stream even after multiple armageddons.

Rigor Mortis is potent, but can be soft countered by Relief, and by killing shit fast. Longdead are much weaker to large BF removal, such as RoS, EQ, Firestorm/Acid Storm (Firestorm stops being relevant after Army of Gold, but Acid Storm will always devour skellingtons).

Furthermore Lanka isn't Ermor/Lemuria, their main battlemages aren't undead, so Rigor Mortis isn't quite as stupid (still crazy strong, ofc).

Having Reanimating Priests is, ofc, better than not having them. But it still isn't matching DomSummon for a flying demon sacred on an upkeepless summon that survives Genocide.

In the super lategame skeletons are pretty much worthless for attacking into armies, since they just make HP routes easier. They have validity as defenders though, since Turn 1 Buffs go up before the BF clear.

That's over 5000g worth of infrastructure and nearly 50d worth of commanders, free. Plus ~6 months of freespawn & expansion, and three sites. Basically a whole year's worth of goodies gotten for free. It's also centered on some very nice farmland territory, so he'll have plenty of money to start up more forts once he's ready.

Every other nation still needs to build a basic economy before they can even think about throwing themselves at him sometime in year 2. At which point Ermor will have easily researched Ench 4+, built another fort or two, and be ready to catch them.
Or you could use that weird turn-1 event and essentially give everyone free expansion into low-PD provs.

I don't think it's compatible with other balance mods if you want to run Summod for example, but I personally like it. Besides UW nations being generally weak, I think Dominions underwater gameplay has a number of other problems like land nations having great trouble getting underwater: often times it's so troublesome the UW nations just stay unchallenged in their pond until the end of the game. UW Expanded seeks to rectify this by giving UW nations better tools to get on land and land nations better tools to get underwater.

And here's another area where you're wrong. Lots of communions use low-level spells, but offload fatigue to the communion slaves so that more spells end up being cast overall. Horde of Skeletons seems to be a popular choice for this.

Scripting only goes up to five. If you're using a communion, that gives you effectively four script slots per master. There's very few times where you'll be using a communion to try and script four low-level spells as opposed to scripting higher-level ones with more fatigue, because most of the time, your slaves can do the same shit once or twice. There is no real 'average' for communions, but generally when they're utilized heavily it's to easily place down serious buffs, cast mid-to-strong level evos, and when powerful enough, get endgame shit down. There's a fair amount of fine-tuning you're missing. One of the best tools for communions is a master matrix, which preserves scripting turns and gets you first turn. Another nice trick is turbocommuning, and I don't mean that stupid "lol i have lizards with n9," but with 10+ masters, 4 slaves, and one master dumping reinvigoration +pain transfer to keep the slaves around as long as possible. Both of these are relatively advanced mode, though, and you'll note they're effectively ignored by many people in this thread. Blood-magic also isn't too complicated, but scaling up properly is beyond many people until they're exposed to the idea, so it really is a scrub->not scrub step. That said, I really have three things I think are important.

The first is "teching up." In games that will get past turn 30-40, knowing how to get beyond the basic abilities of your nation is vital, especially if you're playing a nation with nonobvious tools. Int erms of ease of difficulty here, you basically have berytos (just use better summons as the game goes on) --> normal blood nations --> Arco (has to tech into golems, faerie queens, etc.

The second is map movement. Knowing how to split armies and coordinate them so that you time major conflicts to major research goals, grab territory and take forts as efficiently as possible, and capture the defensive turn are vital.

The third is threat assessment. Knowing what different force compositions can beat is pretty important, especially for the goal of using your forces efficiently. Small gains at the start of the game snowball into large gains at the end, and while the easiest way to get those small gains is through effective diplo, simply playing more efficiently than your neighbors can sometimes work too.

To be more clear: Pop Loss reduces resources. This is seen by playing with/against any dom kill nation and noticing that resources drop when people start dying off. Prod 3 Ermor still has no resources in the lands that it killed off.

Unrest also decreases resources in a province. You can see this if you recruit a bunch of revelers or other unrest increasing units that do not kill population. The "Raiders from the sea" or "brigands have holed up in some ruins" events are also a testament to that fact, but are harder to test.

Bloodhunting decreases both population (if successful) and increases unrest (no matter what). So it fucks up resources regardless.

I'm no veteran player, as should be obvious by the fact I'm in this game too. But I can tell you that I'm gonna start building a fort next turn and I already feel like I'm behind for not starting this turn. The earlier you get to building, the sooner you can have more mages researching and the sooner you can get better spells

I have research orders worked out before the game starts, with a general idea of when I want them by.

When I build forts usually depends on how my income is doing, since I usually only build them with money which I can't spend on expansion.

Basically you want to do that as soon as possible, even if you're just recruiting cheap mages for the research. The only exception is when it'd get in the way of expansion.

When your first fort finishes construction, you should have a lab (and temple, if needed) already there so mage recruitment can begin immediately.

There really isn't much of one, outside expansion.

During expansion you can focus on either. Getting a couple of research levels done early can be insurance against a rush, whereas sitesearching early gets you more gems. I usually go for early sitesearching if I'm running a bless, and research if not.

Once you're finished with expansion you should have plenty of mages to sitesearch and research at the same time. Sitesearching needs very few mages (compared to research and battlemagic), and once you're done searching those mages can go back to research.

There's limits for most ID ranges (the biggest issues seem to be with events), so there's a hard limit to how many nations you could have available at once.

The limit should be fairly high if you're willing to replace vanilla stuff, though.

Thanks for the advice. This is the first map I've made for the game. I get how clustered terrain types can be a problem, but I am designing the map to be a scenario-type thing, like that one EA map, so the terrain types shouldn't be a problem for the nations that are placed there. it's for a mod i'm working on

I'm planning to add water provinces, as well as an underground version of the map which is displayed below it. (horizontal wraparound only).

How exactly does sailing work? Can you just cross through one water province if it's adjacent to a land province? I was thinking of just placing pre-determined sailing locations as well, where any army can "sail" between major ports by moving normally.

Sailing works by allowing the sailing commander to treat water provinces as land for movement. So, a 2 move commander could move Land (water) Land, 3 move can cross two water porivnces, and so on.


Also, totally jealous of your map, using the same tools the empire of Sarthon looked very mehish, and that looks awesome.

But what happens when someone wants to invade them? And what happens if someone successfully beats another nation and holds a lot of their terrain? You can't assume the land is going to be held by a player with the appropriate survival skill.

Province clusters also tend to have income/resource disparities. Starting in the middle of a bunch of mountains would make expansion easy, but should result in a lot less income than someone who started in the middle of a bunch of untyped provinces.
