There wasn't that much opposition to EU4. People shitposted about CK2 a lot but eventually warmed up to it. Victoria 2 on release was one of the worst Paradox games in history and yet it's the default that most people here resort to now.

I've kind of been toying with the idea of starting an open source engine replacement project for Victoria 2. Probably based on HPM instead of vanilla. At least to begin with you would use the original game assets, and try to recreate the hardcoded functionality with ideally improved AI and economy logic. Later on what these engine recreations tend to do is replace the assets so you can decouple the game completely from the original, and start adding new features and depth. I like the idea in theory but idk if it's better than just starting from scratch. I'm probably too lazy to get it actually started, and it would take years to be playable state anyway

Development was going slowly because of the ambition of the project and no deadlines were being met in a satisfactory manner, it would have probably needed to come out at the same time as EUIV with how things were going if it wanted to look good, and it's never a good idea to release two games that would directly compete with each other.

We can assume the same thing Happened to EvW with the projected plans for HOI4. Something about the Clausewitz engine makes it difficult to replicate the modding wonders that the FtG, AoD, and Darkest Hour people did with the Europa Engine.

I'm adding three custom nations to South East Asia. First is a Wokou nation on Taiwan to represent the Japanese pirate who terrorized Korea and China for centuries (pic related).

Next is the Haizei Chinese pirate kingdom, meant to represent the more ambitious pirates like Lim Hong and Ching Shih who based themselves in the South China sea and also terrorized the Chinese coast.

I know c++ and only c++. For mouths I have had the ability to code all the logic that happens behind the graphics, all the calculations, values, AI, all aspects that happen to make a game run, but not the ability to incorporate graphical meshes into the game.

There's a lot of cool things I can do with C++ right now, anything you can think of(that is, if you can tell me HOW the mechanic would work) I can translate into code so that computer will run it. Sounds easy, but what about getting the unit sprite to be in the center of the #providence, in c++, I would make a script to find the center of the odd shaped tiles then tell the sprite to be in those coordinates. In unity, I don't know how I could communicate the tile information to cpp files so that they could do the work, then send that information back to tell unity where the sprite needs to be. It can be done, but requires learning how to use unity, which I'm not sure I want to do.

I'm thinking about making a game spanning 1800-2010.... Aiming for the stars here, going to need a lot of help on country specifics. Only one start date, and since history is going to diverge so hard that by the end date no ones going to recognize it, there will be a lot of sandbox mechanics to try to cover everything from the industrial revolution to proxy war mechanics, decolonization, terrorism, block trade groups, embargo, etc

First major design question, since this game has no graphics, it has no map and no real time element.

Here's whats lost because of no graphical input:

1.The map in paradox games gives us information about resources, political boarders, military units, and allows for pseudo-combat

2.The element of real-time action allows for the passage of time to seem fluid, waiting 100 days for a ship to be built and 70 days for a factory to open, having it like this really helps immersion. When a game is turned based, everything has to happen faster, you don't want to sit around for 70 turns for a damn factory to open and then 30 more for the ship to finish. So turned based makes everything feel less smooth.

For this game to work, we need to fill in the lost stuff though abstraction. The turned based stuff is the more obvious one, just make it so that every turn equals a mouth or something like that. The Map stuff is the harder one to account for

So, this is a game I'm making for /gsg/, so feel free to weigh in if you have any ideas of how to execute this stuff in code. I'll be monitoring for your input, if no one has any ideas, I'll come up with something and propose that stuff to you.

That's the reason why you can mod the game, the exe is a compilation of engine code they created, it's inputs are all the things you can modifies, the outputs, the game though your modifications.

If I made my own engine, it would be that simple, but I would be mapping unity to it's own coordinate grid that it set up realitve to itself, meaning the coordinates wouldn't work going back and forth between my code and unity

As for the map, it is beyond my ability to graphically repentant it, however there may be other ways to simulate territory. Looking back at the idea of territory, I feel that I might be on to something.

Ok, so here's an idea of how to navigate past the no map problem. What if every country had a territory amount assigned to them, and the amount of territory you have is divided to equal like 5 states. So each country has 5 states in varying sizes.

These states will house, resources, populations, and units. When you go to war with another nation, the battle doctrine, equipment, troop number determine how much territory you take over per victory?
