This doesn't work too well in my experience.

You're empire I assume?

Bring cavalry, even pistoliers, and have them guard your flanks. They should be able to keep the doggos and marauders at a safe enough distance for your to finish off their infantry line before you turn on them. You'll want some crossbowers to support your cav by shooting the mounted marauders.

Anyone else loving how much you get shit on as Vampire Counts? It's a struggle to just withstand chaos and you end up being a few castles in their way that just won't fall until you end them, I'm 400 turns into legendary and I've just re-established myself in the North after a bit of lurking and withdrawing behind the lines of Mousillon to build a buffer, I can't see thisdescending into doomstack conquer move on conquer for a while. Also grinding enemies down with attrition and stack after stack of zombies while you soften them up for your main army.

Who the fuck though marauders and warhounds were a good idea. How the fuck am I supposed to react to 15 units literally sprinting in circles around me until they find a flank to attack, while another ten units of marauders make a front line I cant ignore, and hellcannons attack me.

I can't attack the hellcannons with my front line, because that leaves my flanks open to hounds. I can't attack with my reiksgaurd, because they get fucking bodyblocked by a thousand dogs.

I scraped a win, but holy shit was it close, and I lost more men then they even had. I wasn't even using shit tier units. I had Greatswords and crossbowmen and Halberdiers and Karl.

The terrain is a bitch for dwarfs and greenskins. You have to go through turns of using the underground and taking roundabout passages to get to your enemy and it seems like they're always two steps ahead of you. If you can consolidate power in the mountains and use the dwarf clans neighboring the VC as a buffer to the bullshit in the north and finally open up the badlands as your main front, you've won. In my experience the other dwarves surrounding the badlands are always thirsty for at least defensive alliances, even on the higher difficulties. Try coordinating war targets and sniping smaller clans so the greenskins can't confederate if the grenskins themselves are taking too much effort to kill early.

well there are a few tricks I've picked up with chaos that can add a little bit of technique to speed things up.

>army states

you can use 75% of your normal movement every turn and still recuperate losses. there isn't a reason to stay still, really.

you can actually go into force-march after razing a settlement. marching gives you a great boost in mobility, and if your army's relatively big people aren't going to attack you, even on higher difficulties.

What I personally do at the start of the chaos campaign is awaken the baersonlings, and move south, rarely looking back. the start is rough because Kislev will make use of their forts to take defensive postures. The Red Eye Orcs and the dwarves they're fighting south of the chaos wastes, not the Kraka Drak, are actually prime looting locations for a fast start.

It really doesn't hurt chaos to forego diplomacy. I've been at war with fucking everybody, and even attacked my allies to get to a fort I wanted. Very rarely does anyone do anything about your bullying.

It's a good idea to try and maintain a single strong army for a portion of the game, and don't be afraid to merge units and recruit more while you're recuperating on your 75% movement turns. The reason being isn't really the debt, but that way you can get away with a lot more bullshit that involves bullying all of the factions.

Don't feel obligated to pick fights with everyone though. You can just as easily run through countless factions on your quest to eliminate the dwarves, or Bretonnia.

The most important for last, is that you should always get horde-growth on your main commander as soon as possible. It let's you rush the chaos warshrine and field some chosen, who have little problem mopping up other human factions especially early on. A lot of people complain about Chaos being too slow, or taking forever, yet I really haven't felt that, finishing my legendary in around 120 turns, and easy in 34.

What are each faction's choices versus the End Times?

empire can usually go toe-to-toe with greatswords and muskets. demigryphs and steam tanks if need-be.

dwarves you just park your ass and wait for them to be out of position and jump them, or have them fuck up by attacking you on a map where you have a hill and artillery.

Reinforcements are bullshit.

Sometimes they trivialise maps, because you can crush one enemy before they get a chance to do anything and sometimes they place one of your armies in an incredibly vulnerable position.

I've been playing too much undead, when I play empire I just throw units at the enemy to tire them out. Like I don't even care anymore, I'll just conscript more soldiers. Perhaps war has hardened my heart.

Really enjoying Warhammer despite the dumbing down they did to the game. The agent spam doesn't seem TOO bad so far despite the complaints. My only 3 gripes so far are:

The AI seems to cheat much more blatantly than before. I've seen enemy armies reinforce from 2-4 units to 15+ while in enemy territory suffering from attrition where the player would have no means to do so. As well hero units seem to respawn pretty much instantly with more or less a full stack.

Not being able to manage garrisons and hire armies without a lord. Didn't like it in Rome 2 and don't like it here.

And coinciding with issue 1 orcs are an absolute nightmare to play against. They have insanely fast respawns and don't seem to have any sort of limit on their armies or waaagh! stacks at all. I have one of their towns totally isolated and yet somehow it has managed to spawn 5 fucking waaagh stacks from 1 army despite them never moving or fighting at all. This is made worse in that they still spawn armies and waaagh! armies in absolute abundance down in the badlands while doing so. It's all from the Greenskins faction and I have an agent at the lone town and haven't seen anything move in via underway.

Also diplomacy kind of sucks but that could just be because I'm playing vamp lords/

I just can't keep up with any more, especially when facing the faster factions like the Norse. I'm taking tons of casualties from units wasting time because I can't micro them as fast as the AI does.

I figured that way. Glad to hear it though. Surprisingly the best alliance I have is with the last free dwarf subfaction that hasn't been subjugated by the Dwarfs faction. They give me currency when I need it, they attack anyone I ask, they actually help during chaos incursions.

I'm at a horrible stalemate with the orcs right now so I think I might boot up a dwarf game to check them out. I do really like the VC style of having mostly mediocre units dealing heavy morale damage though. Makes for some surprising wins via routing.

Basically this, the lords are what holds the vc together right now.

I've also noticed the AI is really shit at properly using their lords, and they don't focus my lords unless I directly put them in harms way or try to solo a giant with one.

Feels like that simple thing is making battles easier than it should be, especially on legendary. I really shouldn't be winning the battles I have been as VC, especially with spirit leech thrown in, can cheese your way to victory by routing entire armies with a lord snipe.

additional info : don't particularly enjoy chasing horse-archers, and greatly enjoy having strong heavy infantry for sieges / in general. You use them in the vampire wars, and against the doomtide. That's when you KNOW you're gonna be fighting some large shit. Vamp castles always have the varghests/varghulf/terrorgheists lurking in garrison to take your cannons out, and the chaos lords bring giants.

If you spent cash unlocking them while you're still dealing with the greenskin problem, I feel bad for you.

You can't bog Kholek. He smashes a hole and walks through. If you really need to move, order him to charge something he isn't fighting and he'll clear a path through literally everything on him, nothing comes close to his mass. But smashing the hammer once is good enough.

He also can't be hurt by anything less than a great cannon battery, which might ping off 60 or so health per volley.

A little late to the party, I know, but I just started playing the warscape games. S2, R2... What the fuck? It's so weird. I feel like I can't tell what's happening to my troops and they just blob all over the place, hardly feel like cohesive units the way they did in M2 and R1.

Managing cities seems like there's way less precision and I can't really dedicate cities to specific things. I can't even set the taxes individually.

Am I going to get used to this at some point?

Essentially what i usually do is make sure my starting province can create a large amount of units and then make the rest into economy provinces / defensive outposts

depends greatly on what faction you're playing as, each has their own sense of pace

dwarves and greenskins probably expand the fastest since they aren't impeded much by having to spread corruption and they only compete with each other for settlements that other factions have no interest in for the large majority of the game, in an area that only they can traverse well

VC probably has to expand the slowest since they have to saturate areas with corruption before safely expanding, but that can be done fairly quickly if you're familiar with the faction

empire is variable, depending on how fast you can get an economic jumpstart. people don't joke when they say grabbing marienburg before turn 20 literally sets you up for the rest of the game. basically you want to be aggressive enough to secure key provinces, build up the necessary infrastructure, then explode outwards towards enemies you can't negotiate with. expansion is handed to you on a silver platter when chaos appears for the second time as all human and dwarven nations will ally/confederate without issue.

chaos depends on whether or not you decide to subjugate the north or not. deciding to go straight south into kislev is riskier but ultimately quicker than dominating norsca at the beginning (by anywhere from 50-100 turns depending on how lucky you get chasing down varg and skaeling), but making sure all of norsca belongs to you through vassalage basically ensures you can't lose.

Collapse how? In total war games there is no reason not to be as big as possible, the more settlements you have the more income you have. That is it. The only thing to be worried about is public order, even then it is basically a free level for what ever general is near the rebel army. Even if the rebel army takes the city it is better to have it in the hands of one week faction than part of a larger enemy.

in my greenskins game it was Tilea. Early on I sacked the Border Princes and that opened the door into empire territory. After purging the empire and meeting chaos in what used to be ostland, I stopped to look at the map and Tilea snaked its way through Altdorf into Nordland while Kislev had been displaced into Hochland, which they made into their new home. Everything east of Ostland and north of Akendorf was ruins. It's always interesting seeing the political powers shift and move through the course of a campaign.

I think expanding to the north was a poor decision in hindsight, I could have spent all the effort I've used on fighting off chaos on fighting humans and actually taking their land like a good vampire. Instead, the entire world loves me and I have military alliances with the Dwarves and Empire, because I thought that if I helped both of them out they could hold off the Greenskins and Chaos, respectively. Unfortunately, I'm also causing massive civil wars by corrupting their lands, and I think it's fucking them up pretty badly. Whoops.

Sometimes the AI seems to make HUGE strategic errors, like they forget to account for 16 unit garrisons or something. They aren't better at decision making on higher difficulty levels, are they? Beyond being more aggressive and attacking you if you're weak, I mean, these guys just decided to besiege my city when I have two full stacks of elite troops in range and 16 fairly elite troops in the garrison, and they've only got two stacks of somewhat attritioned chaos guys. Yeah unfortunately the best way to actually play Chaos is to stack Chaos Warrior w/ Great Weapons.

The Chosen are basically a ruse. You can easily come up with 2 armies much earlier in campaign if you just get the much more efficient Chaos Warrior GW's and you'll have more of them too to match the enemy numbers easier.

Nah bretonnia won't have unique schools of magic. They use Heavens, Beast and Life though.

Beast and Life aren't in the game yet, Beast has a few ranged damage spells, a couple buffs that work best on cavalry and beast units and its last spell can turn the wizard into a dragon.

Life again has some damage spells that work best around forest, but its buff spells are about toughness or regeneration.


Also Pegasus knights are fucking cool. and were pretty tough for flying units (how ever right now they're really fragile in game)

I think the weight given to units in autoresolve is imbalanced in humans favour somehow, much more so than i remember from older total wars. I remember autoresolve being a gamble even when the bar was 70%.

Now it's pretty much a guaranteed win if the bar is even halfway.

Anyway i think their decision to not attack is based on that.

Autoresolve seems pretty fucked up a lot of the time. Most of the time, it's fairly accurate. As in, 70-80%. And then you get situations where you're VC with superior troops that outnumber theirs, and you get about 15% yellow. Or they have literally a single heavily injured lord and they have a solid 15% of the bar. It doesn't even seem to be that it just oversimplifies things and uses stats, and ignores stuff like cavalry destroying a pure archer army, although I'm sure it does that too. It just seems to get things straight up wrong sometimes.

Greatswords I can see standing up to boyz, but basic swordsmen? Not a chance.

You'd have to set entire battles with armies dedicated to weakening the fucker, throw steam tanks, demigryphs and greatswords at him and they'd be swatted aside and laughed at, but whittle down his armies, lure him into the deep forests, and get on his ass with an army of luminarks, wizards, great cannons, and some hit and runs with ghal maraz and he might go down if he's had a bad few battles earlier. Help me understanders. How to fight undead with this army? It's mostly zombies and skeletons, which I have beaten before with this army, but it was fucking close last time. I fought them in triple line last time but my marauders broke and reformed 3 separate times and barely finished the fight. If I spaghetti though, I think they're just gonna break through and shit all over me the second one group gets spooked.

The enemy also has one group of grave guard and 5 heroes, I think two banshees, a necro, a level 1 vampire lord, and one level 18 manfred on hellsteed. I'm banking on fireballing him out of the sky but if my bird gets leeched this army is pretty much lost because nothing else can stand up to those grave guard, and I think manfred could duel my bird and straight up murder him.

I'm taking a half measure and going double line. The guys in the back are veterans of Hel Fenn, where we defeated them before. I remembered incorrectly and they have no grave guard, but they do have some dire wolves and a bat.

So am i the only one who is already bored with this? I've beaten a empire campaign and most of a vampire count and i feel like there is no challenge/ anything left to see :p I have also done about 40 turns on the other factions just to get a feel. The one siege map is starting to lose its luster after the 80th battle . The over world strategy is the same for each race and managing city's is more of a chore than a decision .

Auto Resolve has this fucking mess at 50% and if I do auto it I win and only lose the god damn Warrior Priest. Clearly the game thinks this is winnable but every time I've tried to tackle this battle, I get shit on super hard and route because I can't catch anything and get easily surrounded. Is this even remotely winnable outside the lucky autoresolve?

that seems really hard to beat without some cavalry and great lord stats, especially with the hellcannons pounding you. The pistoliers might be able to kite some of the horseman away for a time to even the odds, but it would come down to the wire every time I suspect.
