Sisko's problem is that his character is too bound up with being the Nerevarine and when he isn't doing that he's just a not very remarkable Starfleet captain. That and the writing didn't pick up until like four years in.

I think he gets better once the show gets better and they start to have an idea of where they're going. Because Sisko is so connected to the story arc, it drags him down when it's bad and boosts him when it's good.

He really starts to shine in season 5. For the Uniform is a good example, and probably my favorite episode.

Saw something about portals in the last thread, got me thinking

Advanced FTL methods? Maybe they can add more, you can research more, or research advanced upgrades to your current FTL?
Like in last thread, wormholes>portals
You can either make portal stations that connect from anywhere in the galaxy, or sort of a giant wormhole generator with reach across the whole galaxy
Hyperlanes> some sort of super-hyper lanes, let me explain
Instead of all these random stars being connected, there are a certain # of stars (depending on galaxy size) that connect with huge lanes, I'm talking you can go from one star to another a certain # of stars (again depending) or to another across the galaxy, in a relatively short time compared to what it'd take to travel normal hyper lane
Warp>...beats me

Ideas/comments/opinions/suggestions?
>>
>>143929468
There was only one starship troopers movie though.
>>
>>143929636
True.

I wish I hasn't sold the game, I miss shooting alien bugs.
>>
>>143929509
Slipstream space like in Halo. Similar to warp except you aren't sure where in system you'll land.

How many types of ftl is there in sci fi? I mean really they all seem to boil down to the three basic ones we have in Stellaris. Not sure what more could be added that wouldn't either be significantly worse or better than any of the current ones and that also isn't just a slight variation of one of the three. Although adding variations of the three would be cool as well.
>>
>>143929509
For hyperlanes you could introduce lane creation. For warp, I dunno, passively repair while in transit?
>>
Still the best.

I'd like it if wormholes could only produce a single connection that you set, that would basically just make them warp gates, with your ships having no ftl capability of their own

no charge up time just flying through the wormhole as if it were regular space, possibly even with them being open for anyone to use

the late game upgrade could be a more expensive infinite range version

of course that would fuck up the retreat functionality, but it would be more interesting to me, and more balanced with the other types

another upgrade could be a ship mounted version that does have chargeup time like now, so you would have one or more large ships mounted with a wormhole generator for highly mobile fleets, or put one on a science ship for better exploration, that would also restore retreat functions
>>
>>143927132
This is the map from Fading Suns.

I never played it, but apparently it gives you a full map for every planet. Which makes sense, because planets are the actually interesting part of space, no one ever printed out a 1:1 solar system map.

Space games should stop dicking around with space ships and make ground combat the focus. Make planetary invasions like the air game in X-Com.

New ship sets when? The Reptillian ship set is the only all around good looking one, but even the corvettes have retarded wing things. Mammalian ships are okay but the corvettes are weird and the destroyers have some ugly combos.

The rest have one or two decent ships but most of them are ugly.
>>
>>143930002
>no charge up time, just fly through
That's essentially what I thought of for portals/star gates lol. A good idea
>wormhole components (Large) for ships
Would be an amazing addition
Maybe take a lot of energy, but no need to return to the wormhole generator if one of your battleships has one?
Maybe it'd have to be an actual segment of the ship and not just a component. I dunno. Another good idea though

Except in Moo3 those were naturally occurring lanes.
You also had basic retro engines that in ultra lategame became as fast as hyperlanes to counter bottleneck problems
>>
>>143930012
That's an awesome idea
If they made it so you had to actually set up/plan for defense of the randomly generated terrain of your planets, it'd give you something to do mid/late game

As well as give a lot more depth to the game/war and combat, deploying ground troops and going from a space 4x to an on-ground rts. In the same game, no load screens? Just zoom into the planet? I would never stop playing

Warp isn't moving at the speed of light (since matter can't travel at the speed of light), what warp does is manipulate (warp) space-time so that your ship is essentially caught in a space-time wave or bubble, that is capable of moving faster than light, since space-time itself doesn't have to follow it's own speed limit. So technically ship traveling at high warp speed probably wouldn't be moving faster than a normal space ship, if it even needed to move at all. The interesting bit about the crash would be observing the effects of the abrupt compression of space-time around the crash site, as the the warp drive would've been active and warping space till the moment of the crash.

Because you're probably using the largest map?
The others have a cap for 10,8,6, etc. players.

Trust me on this, beyond earth is three times the fun if youplay with max players on a normal map. The Ai gets really aggresive and paranoid with the player and each other, every new city angers someone.

You also can't get Telepathy unless you have a Psionic scientist if you are Materialist.

This is why basing the faction threshold solely on happiness is retarded, it makes it easy to game and entirely ignorable, but they probably set it at 35% since above that the number of rebellions probably become overwhelming. It should be based on ethics, development level, distance from capital, and other factors on top of happiness, and give factions more demands than just independence or repatriation.

I've played multiple games to the 300-400 year mark and I've never had a single rebellion, not one, even playing as non-slaving/purging empires, it's really easy to keep happiness above the threshold.

More hull if you manage to get that tech. If not then shields.

Armor is pointless since lazers and plasma is a thing. Shields main drawback is torps, and you can PD your way through those.

Although if its MP, and the enemy has Neutron Torps, then you're kinda just fucked...may as well build armor to sorta tank em.

But I had a hard time deciding whether to make them cultural or militaristic. So I thought of these two. Do you think they are balanced? (these are meant to replace "vanilla" denmark, so they borrow elements)

First one is cultural/exploration based...
Civ: Norsemen
Start bias: Tundra
Leader: Leif Ericson
Trait: Boats and embarked units have +2 sight. Land units pay 1 movement cost to embark or dismebark. Tiles that border both a mountain and a river get +1 culture and +1 gold.
Unique unit: Skald. Great writer replacement. Get one free at Masonry. Get one free whenever you found a city on a landmass that you don't currently have a city on. When writing a political treatise or great work of writing, the tile the skald was standing on gets a "runestone" improvement as well, which gives + 2 faith and with archaeology, +2 culture. Additionally if the runestone is on tundra, +1 food. Skalds also have unique names, like Snorri Sturluson.
Unique unit: Norse Explorer. Unlocks with optics. Land unit with 10 strength. Costs as much production/gold to make as a longswordsman. 3 movement. Ignores enemy zone of control. Moves at full speed on hills and across rivers. Can settle a city if you don't current have a city on the landmass he is standing on. Cities founded by these units get a runestone placed on a random non-luxury/etc tile adjacent to the city.

>>
>>143946816
>you only pick 1
But why not both?
>>
Second one is pillaging...

Civ: Vikings
Start Bias: Coastal
Leader: Rollo
Trait: Coastal pillagers. Health regained and gold from pillaging doubled. Pre-gunpowder land units pay 0 (melee and ranged) or 1(siege) movement to pillage. Any unit standing on a land tile next to the coast or a lake gets doubled defense against ranged and city attacks. All units get amphibious promotion.
Unique unit: Berserker. Replaces longswordsman. Unlocks early, like the regular denmark berserker. Ignores terrain cost. Fights at full strength regardless of health. For every 15 health missing, +1 strength. If it dies to a melee unit, gain faith (however much a pictish warrior would have gotten for killing it). Gets first "defense against ranged attacks" promotion.
Unique unit: Longship. Replaces trireme. Built 25% faster. Doesn't cost maintance. 2 less strength. If stacked with a land melee unit at the beginning of a turn, the longship gets +4 strength and +1 move, and the melee unit gets boosted to whatever move the longship has. If the longship is on a coast or a lake and stacked with a land unit, the land unit can disembark for free.

Only half a million in naval losses.
That being said, I'm fairly sure an assault army is about a million men strong, in which case I likely go through 5 (combined) losses every time I take a world, with 10 worlds per war, so a total of 700 million martial losses.

PD has fairly short range so I do mixed fleet designs to accomodate for the retarded battle AI. I have seperate designs for corvettes and destroyers that have some PD on them. Cruisers and Battleships I always give 2-4 since they tend to be slow as fuck.

Usually I rely on corvettes for PD and just replace them when they inevitably die from rushing ahead. It's important to not do too much PD and get used to fighting missile empires. The instant you need to fight lasers or cannons you will get melted if you don't have enough damage.

That would be, what, a 160 fleet score?
>>
Is there any way to know what kind of weaponry/defense the enemy is using before actually fighting them?
>>
>>143955417
In my opinion, you want a lot more escort vessels than capital vessels, but not -too- many.

Once you have access to battleships, those WILL be your primary damage dealers; escorts like corvettes and destroyers exist only to soak damage, and to kill other escorts.

Overall, the best fleet mass ratio I've found is 3 capitol mass for every 2 escort mass, so 60/40.

As battleships have a fleet mass of 8, we can see the ratio

2:0:3:5 at the base "unit" fleet will give us 16 capitol mass, and 11 escort mass, which comes out almost exactly at a ratio of 60/40.

In my opinion, this optimizes the survivability of the capitol ships, while not sacrificing overall damage capacity in favor of escort screens.

the doubling structure does work, and it has the added benefit of lining up perfectly for production, as you can produce the entire rest of the unit-fleet by the time the battleship is done.

That being said, we can see in that structure there is 16 capitol mass and 16 escort mass, so 50/50, which I feel just doesn't have enough capital firepower and too much escort screen. Whatever works for you though, anon.

Corvettes are your pd screen and cannon fodder.
Destroyers are corvettes that trade evasion for a large weapon.
Battleships are for boating standoff range weapons.
And cruisers are failed battleships.
>>
>>143957426
Corvettes: Soaking up damage, killing other escorts
Destroyers: killing escorts, as well as limited anti-capital weaponry (especially if you give them large guns)
Cruisers: poor man's battleships
Battleships: Primary damage dealers, capable of engaging multiple escorts at once as well as trading blows with other capitals.
>>
>>143957606
By pd screen you mean stuffing them with things that shoot down missiles and projectiles so they can protect your battleships, right?
>>
>>143957737
Pretty much; slapping 1 PD on a interceptor corvette, 1-2 PD on a destroyer (if there's space for it), and 2-4 PD on a battleship is usually sufficient to totally negate any and all missile weaponry.

AC could seriously use an update though, the interface is horrible, the graphics are really dated, especially the FMV's, it barely runs on modern machines without a bunch of fiddling, and ICS is completely out of control. It basically inherited every gameplay and balance problem from civ2.

Firaxis is in no shape to do it since they can only dumb things down these days. Very few are really making 4x to compete directly with civ, and the attempt of pandora to be a modern AC was abysmal at best.

If it's The First League, it's shitty as fuck, just some society points.
If it's the Cybrex you get a destroyed ring world one of them containing Living Metal.
I don't know what you get for the caterpillar ones

Cybrex are hilariously better than the others so far though.

I said this before but 4X really needs a stability mechanic where the wider you go the more unstable you become. I think that one CV mod where your cities could secede did that but I never go wide enough for it to matter.

I like the idea of C3's corruption mechanic but I'm not sure it actually worked.

Most 4x do have wide penalties but its abstracted into "ineffciency", "corruption" or "unhappiness", so it takes effect to prevent you from getting too big.
Stability is just that concept with rng applied to it so instead of being preventative its consequential.
Honestly, its very difficult to balance tall vs wide becuase realistically wide is probably better than tall 90% of the time. The idea that research should slow down in a wide empire is on th right track, but the mechanics of it are usually so abstract and gamey that they dont make much sense or feel arbitrary.
If there were amy mechanic that prevented a wide empire from snowballing it would be
- a stability penalty for things very far from the centre of culture/government
- a penalty for research via a "literacy" mechanic abstracting relative levels of educational development and infrastructure

I agree, wide should be better most of the time.
But tall should be a possible strategy as well, you need mechanics that allow that.
Level of development is always tied to infrastructure, and infrastructure takes time and resources to create. Some of the smallest nations are also the most productive - Japan, korea, switzerland for example. If there was no dichotomy why is russia and brazil 80% forests and jungle? The US might be the only exception, since it had like a 100 year headstart in development.
>>
>>143968592
Creative robots already exists. So do science robots. Research AI and science robots ironically are probably one of the first applications of AI as it doesn't actually require massive capital investments unlike getting farmer robots to botswana or something.

But not like anyone is arguing that a mean robot will steal your particular job overnight. It's a long term shift in economics as it still takes years of advancements and even then it has to push trough socioeconomical inertia.
Any particular person might continue their job for decades even when robots that could replace you are on the market. The company might even buy one and let it work alongside you when one of your coworkers retires. Once you move from the job market though there company simply might not hire a new person.
>>
>>143968906

The Noldor that killed balrogs were the only ones to return from Valinor. Their strength was unsurpassed as they had the Light of Aman in their faces. I think the swords were made by some really badass dwarves, but a good chunk of them also came from Valinor and were blessed. The Black Sword of Turon was later, and yeah it was from a meteor. It wasn't infused with evil so much as it was infused by jerk to cut both ways by the guy who made it.

I just finished reading the Silmarillion. that was like drinking from a firehose.

I've heard that a lot. I had almost no difficulty in reading it, but i took mythology in college and loved that as well. The mythic prose was just like something you'd see from gilgamesh, beowulf, bakaridjan kone, the ramayana, the bible, all that sort. I absolutely loved it, especially as a DM. It's like the grand backstory to the most in-depth campaign ever.

You don't have enough organs for that.

There are no implications to fusion power because the total net energy that the plant provides is eviscerated by the logistics demands of its operation. Tritium needs it's own fission breeder reactor infrastructure, deuterium needs high-energy extraction from seawater, the operators need to be more highly trained than any other power plant operators, the inner walls transmute from neutron embrittlement, etc etc.

Fusion works, just not fiscally. I would love to see their cost-benefit analysis.

You need around 40-50K fleet against FE.

As for pre-battleships game fleets dodge corvettes > all. Stack all dodge you can means defensive computers, admiral with dodge. Interceptor core x3 same best weapons. Armoured torpedos in you case.

Best defensive if HP (crystaline armor), if not put armor because no energy drain, it doesn't matter anyway low tier shields or armor provides minuscule defensive bonus for corvette.

So it might be a stupid quesion but i downloaded some mods from the Archive in the OP but none of them came with a .mod file. So how am i supposed to get them to work? Is there a way to make them work without it?

I don't know what exactly the t. stands for, but the implication is a pot ending in .t X was a post written by X.

So, the reply of t. johan to the post about getting mods off the workshop is implying only someone who works for Paradox would promote getting legit mods for legit copies of the game from Steam. Any real /v/irgin would pirate that shit and get mods from the Ruskies.

So the individualist/materialist greeting, what's up with that?

My main beef with Distant Worlds is that you have to load troops manually to invade others planets.
>>
>>143984105
I was confused for a while as well so I googled it.

>"Who is John Galt?"
Apparently a reference to that rand line, but I don't see how that makes it make sense as a greeting.

Yeah, change the 1.0.3 or 1.0.* to 1.1.* in the .mod file, assuming there are no other conflicts with the mod.
