Yeah, vampire cunts aren't in a great place right now. The only reliable unit VC has is the varghulf, and bat pups can only get you so far, especially considering they need a lord to babysit them, and they get fucked by spears.

Vargheists and terrorgheists get bogged down by mooks way too easy, it's impossible to pull them out of a crowd, and crowds are their worst enemy because no area attack.

Everything else is just inferior to their counterparts in other armies as well. Which would be perfectly fine if the vampire cunts worked like their tabletop incarnation and their strength worked around bringing your mooks back to life. But that's not the case.

What difficulty are you playing on by the way?

Why is this meme being perpetuated? Nothing's tuned for small unit sizes. Magic was just a bit overpowered previously (see the Bretonnia video they released some while back) so they nerfed it a bit too hard.
Buffs are still amazing and will do far more for an army than any damage spell.

I was playing hard campaign, normal battle.

Gave up when Archeon and one other Chaos stack slapped 4 of my stacks to hell and back. I had a ragtag grouping of graveguards (shielded), bats, skeleton warriors/spears, a few knights, a few monstrous units, etc.

60 units massacred, having dealt very few kills themselves.

I realize some of my mistakes now. It was a learning experience.

Total noob here.

How to use Handgunners and Imperial Cavalry effectively? I'm not really great in TW games, I played Shogun 2 casually, mostly using turtling tactics with ashigaru spam and samurai archers, but that's really it. I also struggled with gun units here. Tried to get into FotS, but wasn't able to make it.

I usually put my Handgunners on a first row, they able to make few volleys before I advance my melee row and they go behind and mostly stay doing nothing. I'm pretty sure I'm fuckin up something. Should I move them and flank enemy melee when they get pinned fighting my melee formations?

And with Cav, I get that general gist it to charge flanks and employ hit and run, they usually do great and route weak units, but sometimes they get stuck fighting and just die out and It's really hard to pull them out. What I'm doing wrong?

Also, I'm not really great with 20+ stack armies, I really get overwhelmed and abuse pause commands which I feel is kinda lame, is there any tips to get gud? I recently fought a battle against two Norsca full stacks with mine 3 stacks and that was such a shitshow. I'm pretty sure I lost most of my range units to a two dog squads.

And in a strategic plane, I struggle with initiating battles, enemy stacks just keep running around, raiding and sacking my towns while my armies chase and almost make it but stay behind one step. Even +movement advisors barely help. How to counter?

Well Grave Guards + Black Knights allows for a basic hammer and anvil strategy, though Hexwraiths could probably do it better since deploy anywhere is so fucking good. Having nothing but heavy infantry and cavalry with a possible Mound King really limits what you can do, better to wait for TK to get your fill of bonermurder.

Hammer and Anvil is your friend as Empire. Get a line of Spearmen/Halbardiers/Swordsmen and then when the lines clash you move your Crossbowmen/Handgunners to the sides so they can shoot the enemy.
Same with Cavalry. Wait until the enemy is engaged and then move in from behind and charge them. Unless they're equipped with swords you want to move them out ASAP after charging so they don't get attacked from behind and get bogged down.

Don't feel bad about pausing or slowing down. I've played Total War games for 10 years now and I still do it all of the time.

The only way to git gud is to keep playing. Total War is a very difficult franchise to get into.

The combat one I'm noticing is a bit too slow for my liking but at the very least it's nice for units to not be sanic fast anymore and to allow for greater use of projectiles.

If not:

-I was positioning handgunners on the wings of my battle line with cavalry or some kind of infantry behind them to sweep in and stand up when the enemy hits your line. Once the enemy approaches you move handgunners back, then reorient them to fire enfilade on the enemy now engaging your line.

-Be wary of charging tarpit units (big large infantry blocks. Especially true of the vampire counts) as it can be hard to pull them out.

-I don't think pause command abuse is really too lame. Being able to command like we do at all is unrealistic and because the AI is brain dead if you aren't babysitting it (see those dog squads and idle melee infantry not being able to realize "hey maybe I should move 50 feet to help the guys being butchered"). Again, if you don't mind slower combat Id' recommend that one for making it possible to actually stop and smell the roses and enjoy the sight of battle or respond to threats.

Handgunners can't arc shots and ranged units avoid friendly fire so if you put them behind anything they'll just sit there. If you must use them have them split and flank after pulling them behind your infantry.

Different unit types are easier or harder to disengage from, obviously ones with shit melee like archers are easy where anti-cav stuff like polearms are bad news bears.

You may want to work with heavily focused armies at first, like 3 unit types and maybe some artillery, remember to use ctrl+g to make groups and shit gets much more manageable.

As for the hero thing, I guess what I'd like to see is scrapping the current heroes and instead have 3 categories. The first is armies and their lords, the second are agents, these guys just provide passive buffs and perform actions in the world. The last are actual heroes. People from the setting that don't fit as lords. These guys are tough as hell, expensive as hell, extremely rare, and will solo entire units and each has completely unique traits, like Felix has a bonus against dragons. Then adopt a sort of battle system where one hero/lord when ordered to attack the other will initiate a challenge. A circle appears on the map and all units are forced out of it where the two of them spar. This would be a perfect opportunity to show off some neato animations like say felix is fighting someone riding a dragon and as a finisher he blocks the dragons fire with his sword, runs forward and stabs it under the chin into its brain, flinging the rider off, and then finishes him with a sword blow to the heart. Each lord and hero gets unique finishers and attacks based on the other lords. And if they get wounded they get a rivalry going with stat changes and what not. Losing a duel can cause permanent debuffs on said heroes.

Yeah, every one of the VC units have the strength level of mooks right now, so it's not surprising they got ripped through. Chosen, warriors, giants, and especially chaos lords and heroes will rip through your infantry like butter. A few more units here and there too.

It'd be even worse against kholek stacking ward save and/or magic resist, you'd never be able to kill him, you'd run out of magic long before leech could bring him down.

From a power ranking standpoint, assuming best units available, I'd but it somewhere along the lines of

1 .Empire (largely because tanks and demigryph)
2. Vampire Counts (way to good at lord sniping and breaking morale)
3. Orcs (unless fighting a lot of monsters, which wreck their shit)
4. Dwarves (easy to counter, falls apart late game, lords are meh and artillary isnt that great against high tier stuff)
5.Chaos kinda sucks outside of Kholek being a beast.

Their late game units are mostly fairly crap. The fire cannons are to situational for their cost and you'd be better off with a myriad other things. All their flying units are garbage. Slayers are garbage. Hammers are good but not that great.

It simply doesnt compare to what other armies start bringing late game. Its less that Dwarves stuff is bad. More so that everyone else is better. Add all this to their lords being average at best while other armies all field gods of war.

A lot of their balance is based on two things: magic resistance, and magic is shit anyway right now so thats a moot point. And being hard as balls to break. Which also is a problem that stops being a problem for other armies late game.

So having played through 2 campaigns (VC+chaos), I've noticed something about the units, and was wondering if anyone else experienced this stuff.

So first I played as VC and obviously noticed that the varghulf's regeneration and damage let it basically solo armies at the beginning. But then I had trouble with the auto resolve being shit and killing him off randomly (is there any way to fix this?), and with him being surrounded and then decaying because of low morale.

So then I checked out crypt horrors who have 9 dudes so they don't evaporate when you autoresolve, and they don't get surrounded as easily, and they tend to take up more area so they tank more hits in melee. They seemed like the strongest thing available, just like 6-8 crypt horror squads and then some filler dudes. Then I did the same thing with Chaos's armored trolls and also felt like they're just the best unit.

Anyone else experiencing this? I noticed a lot of people saying the varghulf is the best, regen is shit, etc, but I didn't really experience that.

Also yeah is there a way to make autoresolve not kill all your heroes?

All that remains of the armies of Chaos in my legenmdary campaign, they smashed Mannfred as soon as they marched in, since then I've been raising legions of skellingtons, I must have lost over 20,000 undead just grinding them down, being under siege, then sending skeletons to force them to destroy the skeletons and lift the siege.

I have never felt more satisfied playing total war.

Which units have surprised you on the battlefield /twg/?

For me its got to be gorebeast chariots. They seemed really shit first time round but after giving them a second chance one racked up 183 kills on halberdiers and swordsmen. Chariots are hard to use because you cannot pull units through other units now but if you get them to skim the edges they seem to do pretty well.

Finished my legendary campaign yesterday, fucking struggled to do it because it was so boring. There is LITERALLY no reason to bring anything but black orcs. Boars are utter shite, they are too weak too stay in a fight, too slow to be shock cav, cant pierce enough armor to be of any use late game.

Both Empire and VC have infinitely better cav. How you can even pretend boars are worthwhile is laughable. They need a massive buff.

Playing as Dwarves and grimgore keeps sacking my allies town to the west of my capital... the thing is they keep repairing and recruiting a lord to hold it and grimgore just wrecks them, runs off and goes into raid stance and fucking gets a wagghhhh at around turn 12 and he is around level 11/12 when I'm level 5.

Dwarf artillery is pretty shit beyond the Organ Gun which has shit range (artillery is shit in general on Ultra unit sizes) Gyrocopters are worthless, and there's pretty much no reason to have anything but Ironbreakers and Hammerers in the frontline, and then Thunderers or Quarrelers with Great Weapons in the back, depending on the faction.

They're not worth it unless you're using Ungrim Ironfist. The -50% upkeep on them makes them really valuable, especially with upgrades to Slayers. My army is like, 75% slayers, simply because they're fast enough to catch up with people and they do a shitton of damage. Declare war on them and don't build up walls on your city right next to them. Set up an ambush between your city and theirs. The retarded AI will move their units off their city and run straight into your ambush. You should be able to beat them 1 vs 1, then chase them down to their city and take it after you've raped their main army. Enjoy free money and trade advantage. Funnel it into your capital for Stables until you get Demis and build up a shock army that runs over infantry. I'd recommend not fucking with the south since they'll eventually try to join you anyway when chaos hits. Instead remove vampires, dorfs will probably leave you alone if you help them get rid of the vampire plague. At this point if chaos hits you have a bunch of empire factions between you and them while you build up your walls on all settlements. Either send out armies to aid the other empire units or wait it out and just reinforce/build up armies, I personally prefer aiding them since they are usually willing to confederate themselves because they get fucked by chaos troops.

What's a good opening strategy for Chaos campaign? From what I've heard it's best to stack population growth, ditch your marauder struture for the one that makes chaos warriors and chosen ASAP, and that it's best to immediately subjugate tribes after you awaken them. the amount of micromanaging you need to do in the lategame is really bothersome. Mid-game/early game is so interesting because you have real goals and real enemies. Chaos is just wave-mode where you bully underpowered armies until they fuck off back to the wastelands while the rest of the empire tries to pick up the pieces and you accidentally took control of 75% of the south because every single settlement got fucked.

If they release expansions and the map gets even bigger...it's already CIV V syndrome where you just eventually spend more time upgrading units and reallocating them while chasing some raiding-parties around your empire. A strong tribe can easily get up to 15+ settlements and pumps out cheap stacks like crazy.

My biggest issue with the game really. It's either some doomstack attacking a minor settlements garrison which you can't win at all or you catch up and outnumber them so badly with a 85% autoresolve ratio that you probably won't even bother.

Especially not if you're fighting the 12th Varg stack in a row full of marauder fucking shits.

The stance is not the problem, it is that the AI just cheats very obviously and can blitz around the map at crazy speeds.

Or activates march after razing a settlement which usually takes away all the movement and puts the army on hold.

This always happens to me, in my current Dwarf campaign the Highking is down all the way south to kill of the last orc remnants, easily 10 turns away from home with a shit tier army because all my good stuff is being recruited in my home province.

It will take me forever to get my armies setup and then move them to the north to fuck up chaos because the Empire thinks it is necessary to fight Bretonnia at this time of crisis.

I wouldn't say you should dismantle the marauder structure, the dogs are basically the only option you have for dealing with horsemen. In my opinion, the Norscan horses are so cancer I would head straight for poisoned dogs and then get Chaos warriors. Might even get the tech that increases the speed of the dogs, because otherwise you will never catch the fuckers.

You'd be surprised, Sylvania is actually pretty stable and secure by the standard of Empire regions.

Sure you have to lock your doors at night but at least the vampires keep the forests clear of orcs and beastmen so you won't have your village burnt to the ground every six months.

Just play with Marauder units? Norscans can recruit hounds, marauders, chariots and trolls. Nothing stopping you recruiting those units. As for making them a different race they could only conquer 2/3 provinces of Norsca anyway. I'm betting on Vargs/Skaelings wiping the floor with you though.

There's one: Wulfrik the wanderer' and as his name suggests he doesn't own a tribe or settlement. He just moves around the world on a flying longship challenging others to duel. Mods aren't going to have fleshed out lords with quests you realise.

Alright, 2x spell damage mod is complete. As the name suggests this mod doubles the spell damage of every damaging spell in the game. I also increased the times you can Raise Dead (the zombie summon spell) to 2 times.

Orcs don't really need a buff apart from their Orc cav (Gobbo Cav is fine) and maybe Trolls. They are perfectly fun to play, especially with the WAAGH mechanic.

VC are the most needing of buffs, followed by some of the Dwarf late game specialist units (Slayers, Organ Guns, Brimstone Gyros/Bombers, maybe Hammerers). Gunpowder missle units also feel pretty underwhelming due to their range.
