Main cities have walls already and if they attack those they're dead, so they'll go for undefended cities
If you have literally ONE army in reserve, you can hop from city to city while your main army catches up. The AI is then forced to either attack him (which will be bolstered by your garrison), or move to another city in a different direction. When he changes directions is when you can gain ground.

I honestly just started building the defense chains for cities in the interior, that is, away from the frontlines so that my armies could guard the undefended cities on the front

If you're facing chaos you should be getting a lot of alliances with other nations, in the diplomacy tab ask them to attack the armies roaming around your country. It takes them forever so don't rely on it but honestly just the fact that they're roaming around in your country makes it easier to catch the enemy.

I've had Bretonnia and Estalia take out about 4 skaeling stacks in and around Middenheim over the course of my game

Do you even play this game? Every lord is multiplies your total unit upkeep. When you're running 3-4 stacks "just" getting another Lord and a half stack is enough money to put a crimp on anybody's wallet.

And yeah, the 10 stacks running around using forced march are definitely a fun and entertaining gameplay element that deserves to be defended and detract from the actual battles that have a chance at actually being fun.

No way to avoid it, the word you're looking for here is 'mitigate'.

Buildings help but the best way to reduce it is through agents in two ways - the first is certain skills that passively reduce corruption in your province. The second is assassination, you'll want to kill chaos agents in your territory because their purpose is to spread corruption.

Corruption will start to go once you kill all the chaos stacks outside of Norsca (norse tribes ie varg not included)

You think that's bad? I misunderstood "deploy a battle wizard in Reikland" and thought I had to recruit one from there, so I spent ages getting the money and upgrades to do that.
When I finally did it and realized how retarded I was, the next part of the quest was to defeat 5 orc armies with Franz. He was all the way up in Kislev fighting with Archaeon, and the only survivng orcs were fucking top knots at the literal opposite end of the map, and you can't teleport for that.

Fighting off the entire chaos army with Balthasar and one generic guy was the most difficult time in Total war I'd ever had. I've abandoned maybe one settlement as the Saxons in Atilla, this time I was letting whole provinces go.

I've found that waiting on corruption to get critical mass before invading is a huge waste of time and resources for not much benefit.

Go out and conquer outposts, and then move on to the big cities. Once you conquer a city, that region is now considered vamp territory, and you don't get attrition anymore, regardless of the corruption level.

Corruption is mostly for solidifying your grip on the public.

By the way, go get the mod that lets every faction take any settlement (apart from chaos), and enjoy the large gameplay improvement.

I employed the pro strats taught to me by /twg/ and stacked quarrelers while rushing the gemstone mine to the north. The skill that increases quarreler damage helped a lot. I'm also on Very Hard and initially forgot the button to pause in combat (pretty sure it's fucking P) so I haven't done that once. This is the first TW game I've been at this difficulty and I'll probably move to Legendary on my next faction.

Make the majority of your army quarrelers and then add a few thunderers as you get further up the tech tree. You have no other way of dealing with cavalry that early and should only be using shield infantry to hold the enemy in place so they can get ripped to shreds by your ranged. You can get a skill on your starting lord that increases their damage by 12%, and an early tech that does it by another 10%.

I started by killing the orc army next to me and taking their city in the first turn. Then I took the second city and built a second army in the Pillars of Grungi while I built on to a full stack. Once it's at a full stack, take it north and skip the quest battle for now, you need to take Mount Gunbad. It has a special building that increases your income by A LOT. The second army is to fend off the small bands of orc fucks that will some up from the south, usually on the left side near your keep.

Now you're swimming in gold and can do whatever you want.

Orc buildings are absolute rubbish, this is just a fact. They make no money, poor public order, cant handle chaos or vampire corruption well. Even their defensive structure gives shit all in comparison to other fations

Biggest issue of orc units is the lack of good armor piercing and anti monster. They basically only have black orcs, while great units, too little and often too late.

Don't place your troops in 3+ ranks. You generally have the advantage against other melee units with troops that are 2 ranks deep since they naturally try to close around them.

Swordsman vs Swordsman for example with the same upgrades the unit that is placed in less ranks at the beginning of combat usually wins.

Don't use foot infantry to charge. You use them to shield your ranged units. If you want to disrupt enemy lines use cavalry, you are not going to ever move infantry against your opponent unless they decide to be stationary and you have the absolute clear advantage.

There is a reason shock troops are called shock troops. Don't use them as skirmishers that are supposed to rape in a 1 vs 1 fight, you run into the enemy troops and then pull them back to strike again.

Lords are incredibly useful to disrupt approaching infantry units. They can usually take a lot of hits and have target-priority since the lord is pretty much the most vital unit in your stack due to massive loss of unite moral if he dies or gets wounded. That means that they will focus on the lord which gives your ranged units enough time to rape the everliving shit out of anything that comes close.

Well, for all of Shogun 2, and Atilla, I played with nothing but auto resolves. Now though, it seems that Total War moreso hinges on actual play. However, I've found that I'm shit at strategy, does anybody know any good total war battle tutorials? Better if warhammer focused. So far I've found that I can win, but only after my army is absolutely crushed, and I can mess around and micro my lords.

well you kind of answered your own question there. A group of infantrymen with cavalry and a couple of ranged units can seriously fuck up even overwhelming armies if you play dirty but the only way you are ever going to beat odds like that is unit composition. You need to force the enemy to constantly chase you while you don't fight more than 1 or 2 units at once so as soon as the next unit catches up you've already done some serious damage. It would work better if ranged units wouldn't have ammunition.

You know game is meant to be played on normal mode and normal unit size because this is how it was balanced/tested toward?

Point in the case is that spellcasting/aoe artilery dmg isnt balanced for larger unit size. If they did test if for high/ultra they would fix it/scale it before game was sold.

I'm just not going to be bitching about VC being pure garbage because game has bugs/oversights so for now I'm just sticking with "the way it was meant to be played" which means normal/normal/normal. Its not only about spellcasting - artillery is nerfed too by that.

Personally I was doing stellar with full zombie/skeleton stacks with no autoresolve, in almost permanent raiding stance, only got bored by enemy agents because I fucked up this metagame somehow. Only had couple vargheists at times for extra cheese.

I'm terrible at this game and terrible with figuriing out shitty unexplained features (like how raise dead actually worked was mystery for 70 turns for me) and yet somehow I managed to do fine until agents made me ragequit because its impossible to catch up if you didn't train banshes from beginning.

Play battles on normal and campaign very hard with some mods and game can be near perfect balance of challenging and steamroll.

I found as playing the dwarfs, Grimgor gets a wargghhh going and just sits outside of my capital with two full stacks just sacking the neighbour capital to the west, lets them rebuild and then sacks them again, and my allies AI just keeps rebuilding and sending weak as armies to defend him constantly, by turn 24, he was level 18 and my leader was level 7.

That's not true at all though, the Empire is fucking united and has been most of it's history beyond (frequent) civil wars and hasn't conquered the world.

Elves wouldn't conquer the world either, even united they lack the manpower, it's why they abandoned their Old World settlements in the first place after the War of the Beard.

Same with Dorfs, too few and they hate living outside of the mountains.

I think the only issue I"ve had with an entirely Ironbreaker frontline was only against other Dwarves. With other armies Ironbreakers still hillariously last long enough for my Quarrelers/Thunderers/Artillery to break their lines.

The only nice Chaos player I've met was one that was mostly based his army around Norscan tribes, so that they were actually somewhat interesting.

You need a unified Norsca thats allied to you, otherwise something WILL eventually go wrong later in the campaign and it will bite you in the ass. Spend the first 100-120 turns sacking/razing all of the north while leaving one awakened tribe alive. Eventually they will grab all the ruins which will make a good area for you to retreat to when you need to reinforce your armies. Deal with the blue turkey before launching your rapetrain into the south, if you pick Kholek and fully upgrade him with combat skills he can fucking body the Turkey on his own and knock chaos giants on their asses. If you pick Archaon then be sure to get the skills that boost Chosen. When fully upgraded Chosen will have absolutely ridiculous stats and they will be dirt cheap too in Archaons army.

They'd use grenade launchers as clubs. There's a group of Orcs that uses crossbows and they're considered revolutionary and borderline un-Orcy because of it.

As for stealing demigryphs. Good fucking luck. The things bond with their riders, you'd never be able to ride a stolen one without being torn to pieces. The things turn into feathery terminators and will hunt you to the four corners of the world if you kill one of their riders.

Some wolf riders to pin down running dwarfs is useful, as is some archers of your choice, just dont let them get targeted by other archers because they will lose.

Simply overwhelm your enemy by spreading your line as thin as possible and wrapping around them.

And once you get another general, level him up with the buffs for melee orc units (its the red line). Its a lot of extra damage that you will desperately need.

Once you get black orcs dwarfs are irrelevant, nothing they have will top them.

Like I said I'll have to check if arty pieces scale with unit size, but what I'm trying to say is that artillery based on unit size doesn't scale linearly with unit size on infantry. I.E. Infantry size scales more than arty size does. I guess if that makes sense.

I don't know enough about the Total War engine to understand how it factors damage to individual units.

How do I git gud with the Empire?

I actually don't mind the idea behind Age of Sigmar, I started off with WFB but it really is quite complicated and hard to get into. However the way they went about it (lol fuck your established lore, time for Sigmarines) was atrocious, then GW (being the Jews they are) told us to go fuck ourselves over it.

How to git gud in this game? I mainly play the greenskins and win hard campaigns easily, I always auto the battles, but I want to git gud at manual battles. What should I think about during fights? What are common strategies? I tend to just charge in with all my melees, try to keep their leadership high with lord/heroes while I make sure they can't attack my flank. I also send my cavalry to harass their archers/artillery by going in and out with charge bonuses until they're weak enough to finish off. Also if I have advantage of the terrain I tend to wait for the opponent (forests, hills etc). Tips would be much appreciated!

Just got my minor victory as Saxons in Attila. Made myself stick to a non-save scumming playthrough and having a blast. Creating a political situation in Britian where the Caledonians had to just watch me destroy the Ebs, Picts and Brits before they could declare war on me (and then lost all territory in a turn), while I used my relations with the Jutes and Hispania to cost them all their territories in Spain.

Defeated the Gauls and Franks and took over all of France.

Eventually paid off the Jutes and Gespids to join my empire which gave me control over Spain and two dozen random armies all over the globe. Used those armies to colonise and eventually lead me to having control of Carthage, Macedonia, Rome and Italy.

Strength no.1, allies with strength 2 and 3 (Marcomonians and Burgandians) when Attila came to power. Ufortunately Attila glitched out and is stuck as an heir, so there's no way to actually stop the huns I guess. So after fending off their armies (and beating heir atilla twice), made peace, non-aggression and impregnated his daughter. Letting them wear down the Macromonians so I can eventually control all of Europe.

At the moment causing wars between myself and the Sassanids most powerful neighbours/allies (Persia, Himyar) and dragging the Sassanids into these wars with my allience with them, and using the opportunity to raise and sack the coast of the East and gain some provincial footholds for my inevitable war with the Sads.

So /twg/, when do you decide a campaign is 'finished'?
