Help I can't stop chocobo racing what is wrong with me

So crafters of /xivg/ how do I use Waste Not? It seems strictly inferior to durability restoring abilities. I understand that it's more CP efficient per point of durability but it seems like being forced to use it every turn is a huge drawback, whereas with mending abilities you're free to use whatever the fuck you want because you can't waste the CP cost(with the exception of Manipulation if you're proactively using it at high durability.)

With Steady Hand II and Waste Not active you're using a combined 19 CP per turn which makes Tricks of the Trade useless; that 1 CP gain is not worth the tradeoff of losing increased quality. A single TotT use makes any mending ability more CP efficient than Waste Not.

Waste Not has kind of just been relegated to certain rotations while leveling when your other abilities aren't available for whatever reason. It's pretty much just as you said, you're better off making use of durability repairing abilities IE manipulation than you are with really relying on tricks. I haven't used it once since 3.0, honestlly.

Waste Not (I and II) are just flat-out bad unless you're committing yourself to a crafting rotation that doesn't allow for taking advantage of procs and RNG - and even in those cases, it's kind of shit unless you get it to a point where it lines up perfectly with other buffs like Steady Hand. They have their place in macros and other strict-rotation crafting, but if you're doing anything by hand, they're shit and you should steer clear of them.

However, one thing to note is that you shouldn't be thinking of it in terms of "Waste Not + Steady Hand II = 19 CP/turn". Since there isn't actually a difference between having 5 Durability left and having 10 Durability left outside of Waste Not, you get the same effect out of Waste Not if you use 3 Durability-consuming actions or 4 Durability-consuming actions (and the same effect out of Waste Not II if you use 7 versus if you use 8), provided that you start with a multiple of 10 Durability.

I've made about 60-70 pieces of 3-star food every week since 3.2 released, and probably somewhere in the area of 150 pieces of 220 gear in that time. I stopped using HQ materials entirely after the second week, and now just sell any HQ stuff I get and use my own NQ materials to craft.

I've had to Reclaim maybe 20-25 times out of a thousand 3-star crafts, and I've had exactly 3 synths go NQ on me.

It's like the people who swear by Maker's Mark. Yeah, it's more efficient cp-durability wise, but who wants to spend 20+ steps every craft accomplishing what you can in 3-5 steps with RS IG2?

The tradeoff is efficiency for time, time is $ blah blah blah. Any crafter worth their salt can hq from 100% nq. The only difference is how much time it takes you to get the same result.
