I don't know how other people play or if they can effectively replicate this, but personally, I run (or if I'm playing Voidwalker, blink) as fast as I can between cover to close the distance, grenade ahead of myself, and sidearm them down. If you're good with sidearms, they're surprisingly effective in close-quarters engagements with their high rate of fire, and I can usually take out most players rushing me before they can get a shot in. The key is to be aggressive as possible, since that surprisingly catches half of Destiny players off-guard (and I should know, since I take it too lax sometimes and get killed with my head easily up my ass when it shouldn't have been there).

I don't know how many times I've had to do this to break up mid-map sniper formations on Exodus Blue, or run the outside edge of the map on Pantheon to break through to the other side to keep the match from being some dumbass sniper stand-off.
