so can I start an adventure mode without retiring my current fortress?
>>
>>143421568
well, you could set that world aside and start another one
but you can't run adventure mode and fort mode at the same time, if that's what you're asking
>>
>>143421568
You could copy your world folder, retire your fort in one and do your adventure, and in the other you keep doing your fort. That's about as close as you'll get. You can't have two games in the same world at the same time.
>>
any reasons as to why my adventurer save keeps crashing when i try to save it?

>>143422286
It's probably just Toady's fault then. He's getting bugs this time around and he just added a bunch of stuff so there's a lot of them.

>>
>>143427103
There are arguments both ways.

Early history, like year 10~20 means all the big monsters are running around, but nobody knows shit, and no interesting history has taken place.

Late history means the big baddies are usually gone by like year 250~500, but there is a lot of history to explore and take part in.

Old worlds, out towards or beyond 1000 are fun if there are still an interesting population of beasts and such.
>>
Wouldn't an old world take literally forever to load up?
>>
>So the plan was to upgrade my compiler and then do another bug fix release before doing 64 bit stuff, so different new problems could be kept separate. That's still the plan... it just stretched out a bit since the compiler installation crashed and destroyed my system. Things are partially back together now, with the new compiler in place. I've been playing around with its static code analysis tool, which located some interesting typos which have probably screwed up the medical bedrest and ghost behavior among other things.

So I remember in some of the older versions there was this dfhack tweak that made your soldiers actually decide to spar most of the time when training but I noticed it isn't a part of dfhack anymore. Do any of you actually play this straight up vanilla without any tools or mods? I'm asking because I refuse to touch the new version without Dwarf Therapist to go with it. I find it impossible to believe that anyone plays this without mods of some kind.

Are there any saner ways to micromanage my dwarves without plowing through a fucking maze of terrible UI? Dwarf the rapist is obviously one way, but surely there's a way to make it easier without relying on literal memory hacks?
>>
>>143430792
You're probably thinking of the dfhack tweak that prevented soldiers from getting the patrol duty negative thought improperly. What you're referring to wasn't a thing.
>>
>>143432446
you don't really need more than ~35 dwarves if you skip out on luxury industries and taverns/inns/libraries, just set the cap lower
the only real issue is hauling not getting done quickly, which is easily countered by using mine-carts and wheelbarrows
>>
>>143432446
I almost never use the rapist or manipulator unless I have a major labor reassignment. v p l really isn't that hard.
>>
>>143432446

so this is my first time playing adventure mode

Out of genuine curious interest, has there been any BIG controversies at all?

Like, in relation to DF or any of Toady's games. Any that broke news? Any that caused a split amongst fans? I'm not talking about certain Mods getting their own subforums, and devs getting salty.

I'm talking about stuff that pissed people off (more than usual).

Luckily I assumed there would be some kind of unpleasant wave (but not that much) so I began work on proper dorms, albeit not up to my usual strict brutalistic utilitarian designs. So at least everyone has a bed and most of em have furniture.

I had an interesting idea and went with it. The central ring next to the staircase shaft is a temple. So dwarves walk through a temple to get to their beds. In the center is an artifact cabinet which will help all around.

Okay, when I went to the surface, it turned out that the only buildings in the town, save for the keep, was a tavern, a warehouse and a temple.

Important adventurers always start out in mead halls and keeps, no? And peasant adventurers always start out in residential buildings, on't they? Since there isn't a single one of the latter in this town, and since I started out as a peasant, I guess the game just put me in the dungeon for a lack of better buildings.

No mods, well I modded one being a pet but that is an experiment. No tools no rapist, but I use a damn text editor to keep organized notes. I have a list of dwarves by alpha and one by seniority at the fortress and countercheck those two lists against eachother so I don't forget a twolegged beast and it's about as good as a spreadsheet would be. I have a short list of the miners by skill and I ceased them all except the Grand Master to mine a gold vein and he made Legendary, then I used my list of miners to turn the dabbling junior miners back on to mining.
I have a small file of my own notes for the seven founders in case they have an adventure story I want to note, and it is easier to flip through seven text files than to go in to DF and select them and get in to their profiles to see if they like copper or chestnut.

I know which save file is which, I do not use either autosave. fucktherapist

It does. When you mill a stack of plants the resulting powder stack depends on the size of the stack of plants. It doesn't separate the stack into single units of flour.

Thing is that it only takes the stack as those are, so if you have low-level growers, you will have only single urist of wheat, so you will have only one urist of flour in bag.

Not that I'm aware of, but I haven't kept as bleeding-edge-up-to-date with adv mode mechanics as I have with fort mode. At least as of .40.24 there was no way to change your object of worship in the course of normal gameplay. There's probably some dfhack gmeditor shenanigans you can do it you're playing a version with a working dfhack. Otherwise, the only way that I know that a creature can gain a new object of worship after birth is to be at a site that's attacked by a titan/mega/semimegabeast during worldgen, after which they may start to worship the attacking creature. However I'm pretty sure beast attacks still only happen at player forts after worldgen ends, and I don't know if an adventurer could address an actual creature in the same way they would a deity anyway, even if you did manage to start worshipping one.

Add [INDIV_CONTROLLABLE] and/or [LOCAL_POPS_PRODUCE_HEROES] to their raw block. You might need both, can't remember. You may also need a third tag that allows you to play as an outsider. I don't remember what it is, but if you ctrl f outsider in creatures_standard you'll find it under humans. For convenience you'll probably want to give them the tags that allow them to grasp, open doors, and speak as well.

>>
>>143495924
Oh, so it was a peekaboo siege?
The snatcher still should've had it's own arrival message.
Regardless, the fake sieges where a unit appears with the siege message and then promptly leaves the map isn't units pathing through the site, it's a bug. Traveling units on their way somewhere else isn't something that's implemented on-site for player forts yet. When that happens it's intended to be a proper invasion which, for some heretofore mysterious reason, fails on arrival, the siege status clears immediately, and the rest of the units never show up.
>>143496963
Nah, ambushes have a completely different arrival message that only appears when you discover one of the stealthed units. "An ambush! Curse them!" I haven't seen an actual goblin ambush since 34.11. AFAIK they've never been restored after they were disabled in .40.

Maybe in .42, but if you had them in .40 you're the only one. Unless you're talking about elves or kobolds. Or if you added the [AMBUSHER] tag to goblins, which makes entire sieges arrive in ambush. But the nonexistence of goblin ambushes in .40 was well known and well documented, and this is the first I've seen anyone make a claim to the contrary.

>>
america

>>143505705

Venom tends to take a long time to do anything. It only seems to happen quickly in Fortress mode because of how fast time goes in that mode. It takes 18 hours for a giant desert scorpion (rip ;_;7) sting to rot the brain.
>>

>>
>>143509886
um how to check on the good, evil, neutral alignments of lands.
I am aware offhand that a local swamp is evil because it is purple on the strategic map, but the good aligned jungle biome is (what) green like others. I happened to hear about it's benevolent unicorns that will swiftly terminate your life in adventure mode.

I know you get something of a list of areas in Legends, but that list in at least one rendition is partial. Like it told me 9 out of 22 or is it a hundred areas.

Can someone who known something tell us how players can tell if the very earth where the dwarves is embarked is aligned good?

What is your world gen ferociousness, 100% probably? Almost nobody on here except me is weenie enough to turn that down.
>>
>>143509886
Have you noticed any benevolent unicorns that will swiftly terminate your life at this fortress?
>>
>>143511046
>>143511230
No sign of unicorns, so it must be neutral.
>>
>>143509886
I have genned a world that had no goblins.
Most players will not have had that happen.
Are there goblins, and are there goblin towers in your world?

Hit the 'C' key and what civilizations...hm well that will show you the ones you have run in to.
Can you get in to Legend mode (depends I guess the newer versions lets you read Legends from in a current fortress.)

What version of DF, what gen seed? What is the randomly generated name of the Dwarves civilization and what is the name of this embark? (Those two answers could be used for retrograde analysis I cannot do but possibly Toady can plug a site name in to a piece of software and find out what version and more. Unless he doesn't have that capability either.)

...and also...I give up why am I trying to answer your question. I have seen noblemen demand "ITEM" and then forget it. Not enough crazy dwarves just calm down again for me, ever. Are you by a waterfall? Is there a demon 83 Z levels beneath your fortress that puts an eldritch crock on normal physics and eats all the goblins?

You turned off "Invasion" and you forgot you did.
>>
>>143511418
This logic is probably faulty. While the presence of unicorns would be a dead ringer conclusion, I think they might not show in Fortress mode so that the inverted negative conclusion is not a solid on conclusion at all.

The post about the unicorns was 91% a joke.
As for that other 9%, "who would face the nine?"
>>
>>143512424
>You turned off "Invasion" and you forgot you did.
Obviously I checked that.

>I give up why am I trying to answer your question.
I give up on the fort. Abandoning and genning a better world.
>>
>>143512641
It's a shame too, because I really liked that seed, aside from the lack of interesting events.
>>

>>
>>143509089
>wait a month or so for all the bugs to be ironed out
Hahahahahahaha

Really, you should always play the latest version unless there's a particularly game breaking bug that makes it unplayable. There will always be bugs, old and new, but they're almost never bad enough to put off playing the latest version.
>>
>>143512641
Oh. Of course, what is the name of the land area in which you embarked? If it was "Gracefilled Sylvantia" then I think I might be on to a clue
>>
>>143463410
What are these settings? Don't mind it for my dwarves or other sentient races, but next time I play DF I'd rather not be stuck with non-breeding animals.
>>
>>143511046
>>143511418
The savagery and evil of a region have nothing to do with the frequency of attacks, the resolution of a failed mood or the disposition of a noble after a mandate is failed. All of that is irrelevant to the original question.

If you aren't getting attacked despite having met all of the progress triggers, then you have likely embarked too far from a goblin civ. The limit for civ interaction is 30 world map tiles, and you can check for proximity by pressing tab on the embark selection screen.
Two things affect what flavor of insanity will afflict a dwarf when they fail a mood: their personality traits and rng.
When a noble's mandate is left unfulfilled they get a (usually) negative thought. A crime is registered with the justice system, which sentence will be carried out only provided you have appointed nobles to the just positions and designated proper facilities. If a demand (not the same thing as a mandate) is unfulfilled the noble will only suffer a (usually) negative thought, and no crime will be registered.

Sufficiently explained?

If one attempts to build as an adventurer on a retired fortress, does it persist? Or does the game explode?

I want to use a fortress embark to define the site size and shape and get some starting materials, then build as an adventurer and maybe even hire the starting seven.

So does the fact that the most useful minerals are only found in mountains. Are you going to suggest that Toady makes all metals available everywhere, just for the sake of being "user friendly"?

Your response to your crash,
addresses something different from your crash.

Ya could just delete the world and start over again with the same seed and replay that.

Ya could gen another world and if you are trying for less of a crash, a smaller one should affect that.

Getting the new version might be a good idea and it might be a fine move but the cure it presents to your crash is that you will have to gen a new world.

Thread readers ! Do not be deceived !

Such appeals to upgrade are not strictly connected to the data growth in DF, you still face data growth in every version.
>>
>>143554984
The size and complexity of your fort shouldn't ever prevent it from loading. It would crash before you ever had an opportunity to attempt to save it in such a state. You more likely just had a save corruption the last time you saved. If you don't already, you should start keeping backups to protect against things like this.
>>
>>143515032
Quite well explained.

I always think back through some dim clouds of an indeliberately memorized world gen, where I selected 'skulking' for evil resulting in kobolds only no goblins. So there was once a situation where scalar-type world gen parameters affected goblin attacks because there were 0 goblins and 0 has special properties. I do not know which old version of DF I was in, I have not noticed that "select evil" parameter in five years real time. I did not make a strong point out of mentally tackling those parameters at the time, I just played through so naturally I hardly know what I am trying to talk about.

Maybe that player with the broad question "what is wrong with my game" settled more than 30 from goblins. It's hard to guess crap when we can't see the screens or review the Legends mode.

His conclusion to regen then could be an overresponse where the player could have reembarked closer to goblins. If that, is it.

>>
>>143561370
It's just tedious, that's all. For example: Say I have a fortress that's getting pretty full. Like, 100 dwarves-full. My embarkation site has had very few metal deposits, but I want to make something out of metal. If I have dwarf therapist, I can very quickly pick out who has the highest metalworking skill and profile the workshop to only work for them. If I don't, I have to pick through them individually to figure out who that is. Stuff like that.
>>
>>143561850
I've never played anything but vanilla so I guess I'm just used to the micromanagement, but that dwarf therapist does sound handy.
>>
>>143562138
I get the sneaking suspicion that for like 80% of folks it's really just quality-of-life stuff like that. On the bright side, though, running pure vanilla means you don't have any extra bells and whistles to further slow your processor down, no?

Yeah, save corruption is an old problem in DF that has never been extrememly prevalent, but has also never had a serious bug-squashing push. Considering that people have done multi-generational forts and sophisticated minecart computing and absurd world-collapsing doomsday devices, complexity alone will probably never be a factor for loading failure. Similarly, if the size of your fort is going to crash the game, it'll crash it before you've ever built anything, just from the size of your embark. What's actually in the tiles doesn't matter as much for loading as how many tiles there are.
But I could be wrong. Maybe anon is on a 10x10 embark trying to emulate a sega saturn with a water logic computer in a 300 year old fort. Save corruption seems a lot more likely, though.
>>
>>143562519

>>
>>143561850
Well the metalworkers I am always watching, they are a fulcrum of a dwarven settlement.
Direct the labor at just one of them, and so their rival might first go nutty, make an artifact which might be useful and maybe make Legendary therefore reversing the player's focus on the other one.

DESU of they arrive I look through the motley newcomers and if they like pig iron, iron or steel I take note of that whatever their profession.

But your specific example is about "stuff like that" not just relative metalworker abilities.

This is pretty cool.

After I embarked, I travelled westwards until I found an asterix, which I tried to engage. My movment was stopped by a river, so I left fast travel and activated the tracking mode. After following the tracks in the vegetation for a while, I stumbled upon this one lone bandit, named "Milo Somethingsomething". After I had disarmed him and left him unconscious, I asked about him in a nearby village, and found out that he was part of some local bandit group. When I was about to fast travel out of the village, I noticed one asterix that was standing still in the centre, so I engaged it. It turned out that it was the very same bandit, and a battle ensued. He was still disarmed, so I didn't want to use any weapon myself. The battle turned out to be pretty fierce, but eventually, I managed to deck him.

That's really bad advice. The very first lines of init.txt:

"WARNING: Do NOT copy over the init.txt from an earlier version of DF.
Always read the file carefully, including the comments.

In general, you can copy savegames and tilesets from older DF
versions, but you should not copy anything else. You should not, under any circumstances, unpack a new DF on top of an older one."

1. set up a floor for workshops

2. set up a residential floor

3. set up a stockpile floor

4. designate a bunch of trees to be chopped

5. designate some plants to be harvested

6. set up a pen/pasture in some grass for whatever animals your dwarves brought so they don't starve to death

7. set up defenses (bridge at entrance, cage traps, stonefall traps)

Those are the biggest priorities I can think of. You don't need to bring a leatherworker, armorer, or weaponsmith on your initial embark. I usually have one smith dwarf but it's not totally necessary. I would recommend replacing one of those dwarves with a fisherdwarf next time.

>>143590030
You can use them, but it's not recommended. If for some reason they aren't compatible with the latest release, you can't update without having to relearn a lot. You also can't read screenshots in ASCII.

On the other hand, if you learn with ASCII and then pick your tileset and graphics set and visualizers, you're fine because you won't forget how to read ASCII.

It's not that hard to learn with ASCII, since the 'k' menu tells you exactly what anything is and most things are either placed somewhere you'll remember them (Gee, I wonder what's in the bedrooms that only have beds), have logical symbols (E is for elephant!), or aren't made any easier by not being in ACSII (Workshops look like a jumbled undistinguishable mess no matter what they're made from, you just have to learn them).

It is better to die as a Dwarf than live as an Elf

Here lies unnamed militia #9, fallen among the goblins.

He struck down three even after being pinned in the kidney by an iron bolt. An iron arrow struck him in the neck and he was unafraid. After slaying a final goblin he stood up, pulled the arrow out of his neck, bit a goblin to death and stated "Death is all around us. I am not upset by this." then died.

>>
>>143627716
Oh you mean when you aim specific attacks?

Yeah, if you were using a piercing weapon like a spear, I'd imagine a precise attack would be very useful for upping the chances of piercing organs like a champion.

Likewise heavy would be best used with axes or hammers, the pure slashy/smashy types to get that extra oompf into the attack and hack or pulp body parts harder.

Swords, I guess go for context, whether you want to go for the slash or stab. Overall precision would be best for stabbing organs and heavy would be best for chopping/smashing.

Probably both work better than the normal attack in regards to going through armor.

To be fair I generally don't use the variety moves and just stick either with the default balanced attack or use multi-attacks.

Hope that helps.

If you know about a sword, the sharp end of it is the point of attack. It is like a small spear where the shaft is metal instead of wood. Hacking with the edge of a sword is a waste of time reducing it to a sort of axe. It's like, you could strike with the pommel too why not but it does not work as well as the point does.
Not that I am some real expert on this but I have heard it said that if you chop with the edge instead of stab with the point you are a barbarian on loan from a lumberjack camp.
>>
>>143655354

In DF terms though can you sever as easily with stabs?
>>
>>143655501
probably not, but from what I've seen, severing is only really worthwhile if your enemy is immune to pain, otherwise you just poke or smack them until they fall over, and then poke or smack their heart or head until they die
>>
>>143655650

Interesting. My strategy is usually to sever a weapon hand or a foot and then go for the head.
>>
>>143639998
In general, look in to Legends early and often (now that you have started your first game.)
Migrants just show up, insert immigrant joke here

Did anyone spoil you on population = 80, you import or make a king but also triggers invading armies (if you ever made it that far.)

I am managing a fortress to keep population controlled at 31 today. One went nuts and died this game year.
>>
>>143653709
I got that.

One or two names in their weird as-given works, but it become tedious and you can feel the table-generated nature of it when the grey goo builds up too much. Throw in a Dave or so
>>
>>143655501
Really depends on rng. Sometimes you can sever a whole hydra leg in a steel boot in one hit and sometimes you just keep chopping a fucking arm till a fucking dwarf bleed to death without losing a single limb.
>>
>>143656668
Oh, I misread your post. Nevermind this
>>
>>143653709
The grey goo effect is shorthand for the loss of meaning or relatability a fictional setting undergoes as its elements become more divorced from reality.
If I tell you a story about 5 dwarves with made-up names going to 3 places with made-up names, chances are you'll be able to track that pretty well. Increase the number of dwarves to 50 and the number of places to 15 and then it's going to be a lot harder for you track what's going on than it would be if those were people with normal names and places in the real world. It all blends together into a mishmash of made-up words that don't mean anything outside of the story. That's the grey goo effect.
Now if I take 5 of those 50 dwarves and rename them Mike Tyson, DaffodilPicker, JefftheCuntDestroyer, SSJ9001GOKU, and putnam, those particular dwarves immediately become easier for you to track out the grey gooified mass of dodoks, bomreks, and urists.
>>
Betimes I seriously wonder whether the DF combat system is in fact random at all.

It seems like there are some slightly complex definitions, and the game just looks at this adversary and that one and compares their attack forms and derives a result. Because of our limited capacity for analysis, the various outcomes seem random. Maybe by deep enough analysis it would be possible to know the outcome of a given combat play - I am talking about very deep technical analysis here, not just a good strong understanding.

Anyone agree or any conclusive contradictions on that?

So many other games use a random number generated for 'hit probability.' I am not sure DF does that.

The smart thing to do is rename them to the translated version of their name.

Wheelarch and Cometthrown are easier to track than the dorfish versions.

>>143657145
From playing with the combat system in adventurer mode, the game favors easier targets when you let it pick what to do, and it favors edged attacks over blunt ones.

It does take into account a surprisingly deep level of situational variability which can seem random but really isn't.

If someone is about to punch you with their right hand, if you aim an attack at them you'll see that their right hand is getting closer (normal/easy) but possibly harder to hit (tricky/impossible) because it's moving rapidly.

Oh, for anon who asked about the size/pain change, I just now hit a human bandit with a dragonfall several times and they only went unconscious when their forearm got all mangled to shit, despite fingers and toes getting beaten up.
>>
>want to play DF
>"oh I'll just wait for the next release, it's buggy/the new features are worth the wait"
>>
>>143655501
Depends on the creature. Cuts and stabs are really the same kind of attack, they just have different contact areas. If the body part that you're attacking is small enough in relation to the contact area of the weapon, then any attack from that weapon could sever the part. The more damage the part takes, the lower the range of possible contact areas that could sever (hence spears occassionally severing arms or heads). So on a really small creature like a rabbit, you could sever any part with a spear or dagger, despite the small contact area of their attacks. On a very big creature like a draltha even weapons like greatswords and great axes will need multiple attacks to sever a part.

Ok, so I'm gonna see if I can figure out what happened here, but there's a temple, like human town (and dorfs since I have them making less laggy towns instead of forts) type temples, in a forest retreat with a library.

>>143658101
But, libraries!
>>
>>143658247

Hmm, well the litmus test I guess then is how easy is it to cut off a human head or hand using a stab attack versus a slash?
>>
>>143657790
>The smart thing to do is...
It's not really an issue in your own forts. You're playing it and constantly going back to those dwarves. You have a relationship with them.
In succession forts, though, the readers and most of the players don't have that benefit. That's why naming the dwarves after turn-takers and forum-goers is useful. Their translated names are a little better, but they can get pretty greygooey too to an unfamiliar audience.
>>
>>143658682
I've never cut off a human's head with a spear or short sword's stab attack. It's probably possible with zombified humans, but I can't guess how many times you would have to attack the neck to make it happen. Living humans would almost certainly bleed out or suffocate before the head came off.
>>
Two questions:

As a small worm man do I take any sort of penalty from equipping a longsword? I know dwarves can't equip things that are too big in dwarf mode.

Additionally, can one become a necromancer then vampire? Or does it need to be vampire then necromancer? In the former case, do you still need to drink blood?
>>

This combat system, what is going on in there merits maybe 5 pages on wikipedia. It is probably going to take at least seven years for the concept to sink in to the general public that the combat does not involve a random number.
The "surprisingly deep level of situational variability" should be talked about. It is respectable.

Missile fire and close melee are two completely different planets.

Anything with one or more shields is quite different from a similar situation less that or those shields.
Then there is skill with shield, there is dodging ability.

There is the melee weapon way of things and then there are grappling and unarmed attacks and skill levels in all that. There is the direction two adversaries were moving, which I think the game does take account of.
So who needs a random number then?

Yup. There really is a lot of ragdoll stuff taking place in a sort of accidental fashion. From watching it in game you wouldn't think much of it but then you see the combat logs with someone tumbling and skidding across the ground, shredding tissue, breaking bones, slamming into a tree and falling over barfing in a heap.

Course you can also get strong enough to break shit horribly.

Velocity times Mass = Ha ha, fuck you elves apparently.

We haven't gotten to the point where you can smash your knuckles punching an iron helm, but we will!

>>143665415
Switch to sprint mode, get as fast as you can before you get next to them, then make sure you have a free hand (strap your weapon/shield down, remove a weapon > two pieces of armor/clothing > remove your shield > wear the clothing/armor again, pow, weapon/shield in same hand), then aim a grab at the gobby > jump through them > grapple them (upper arm > upper body is default) and laugh, and laugh, and laugh.

>>143666508
That's just a quirk of the connectivity system, you can see it sometimes when you hack someone in the guts and just bisect them, you get "and the lower body sails off in an arc" since it lists the closest part to the upper body as what was actually severed. A neck means neck+head when you find them, say, laying around in a library.

It really depends on the type of sword.
a katana is very different from a zweihander is very different from a rapier is very different from a gladius.

For the archetypical fantasy sword, the good old-fashioned pointy metal thing sharp on both sides with a handle at the bottom and a crossguard, you can use almost any part of it to kill a motherfucker.
Stab them with the point. Cut them with the edge. Shatter their skull with the bottom. Grab it by the top and break a few bones with the crossguard. Grab it by the middle and use it like a short spear. Just about the only part you can't commit glorious murder with is the bit just above the crossguard because it's not sharp and you don't have much leverage.

You have needs visible in your status screen, sadly you probably didn't know how to get rid of the impossible to fulfill ones (romance/friendship/family), and similarly difficult to fulfill or maintain ones (acquire items/bling/see animals is stupidly hard at times/cause trouble/argue/etc) so you didn't end up only needing like, make merry/excitement/admire art (all fulfilled by reciting a short poem in the middle of nowhere, if need be), prayer (literally talk to your deity, ask how it is feeling), and alcoholism (acquired by murdering lots of people/sentient beings, fulfilled by drinking booze) so that is gonna be a pain.

If you become famous enough, either from heroic acts, impressive hunts, rescuing people from bandits, or just as a story teller/dancer/poet/etc you can stay for free, otherwise you gotta barter stuff/the local currency.

Since DF is going to be in development for so long, I wonder if eventually after 10 years or so Toady will decide to increase the size of the worlds/depth of the simulation that he couldn't fully do this time around. We could probably have like 1000 dwarf, 16x16 embarks and stuff.

Eventually we could maybe even have the entire world simulated at the local level.

The singularity is coming, like can you imagine the average computer of the 2040s compared to today...

64 bit is part of the road to that, being able to hit larger chunks of ram at a time and so forth.
>>
>>143717175

What is 64 bit going to actually change in terms of performance? Just maximum RAM usage?

My hope with this 64 bit thing is that the new compiler Toady selected will have some automatic multithreading type functionality that will split up a few things into multi core without Toady himself having to understand it.

The compiler has already been helping him find stuff, hopefully as he learns more with it he will get more benefit from those sort of tweaks. As for performance it's less about that in a noticeable sense, and more about stuff like when you look at a particularly busy level in your fort or walk into a library as an adventurer and everything stutters and slows way down for a second before going back to normal?

Those sort of bumps will be smoothed over and made less noticeable if they show up at all.

Then you get stuff like 500x500 or 1000x1000 worlds running for millenia, the game just shits itself when you try to max out certain world-gen values, I don't see how a larger page to work in would hurt that.

I've personally heard, but can't confirm, that DF tends to run into speed issues not due to processing but due to having to load and unload things to and from memory since it needs to handle more data than a 32bit program can address all at once. IF, and I stress the IF, that is the case then 64bit will see that problem vanish if the end user has enough RAM and speed will skyrocket.

I found a neat little site with a river intersection I could dam, and a stone highway running along it.

Set up a site there, put in pre-damming walls and set up a partially submerged campsite in the little canyon, figured I'd have to go travel to a volcano to get some magma to fully dam the rivers.

Then on a hunch I tried to deconstruct some of the road, and yep, a single magma sitting there.

Picked it up, chucked it in my backpack, and then worked out how to juggle it between minecarts to multiply it.

1. Get a magma
2. Place it in a magma safe minecart (naturally)
3. Empty the minecart
4. Immediately refill the cart from the magma pool you just created
5. Pick the magma back up

What's fascinating is when the gobs start to gobboform a site they conquer, building the trenches and minitowers and shit.

I knew technically that other civs did this, but as I mentioned earlier in the thread, it wasn't until just recently that I saw a forest retreat capital which had been conquered and had human temples built in it alongside the tree "buildings" and such.
