News:
1)
Julian Gollop is working on his new game, Phoenix Point. It's a turn-based tactical game with strategy elements, destructible terrain, geoscape and character progression much akin to XCOM
2)2) Long war studios are working on more mods for Xcom2, the first of five Long War Toolbox is live on the workshop
https://xcom.com/news/en-long-war-studios-creating-more-xcom-2-mods

Furthermore mod author Capnbubs - maker of the most endorsed mod on the workshop - has been signed onto the LWS team

Fun fact, Elite Dangerous tried doing perfect space physics but found it completely killed dogfights and with weapon ranges and accuracy turned the game into space jousting with the losing party just not coming back around when their shields went down and accelerating into the sunset

>Most things don't try to do space correctly as it makes for a shitty game or blockbuster

It does neither, it changes what you can do. It's like saying submarine combat has to be exactly like space fighter combat or it's not fun.
Fucking retarded.

The problem is that people can't seem to conceive of space being anything other then WWII space fighters, or how anything except WWII space fighters could be fun.
And that's because they're retards.

Elite Dangerous fucked up by trying to implement WWII dogfighting in space, while ignoring all the elements that even make WWII dogfighting fun and interesting to begin with. That's a game design failure, not a "realistic space is intrinsically boring" failure. And retards keep failing at it and begetting the whole thing more.
>>
>>140865618
I presume this is in regards to the new CoD trailer? CoD has never cared about realism, even the old ones are abstract and one man army as fuck (the soviet level where you clear out large portions of Stalingrad pretty much singlehandedly come to mind) and expecting space realism from them is silly considering this is the studio that brought us a teleporting russian army, a russian army that conquers all of europe in a few hours and the Ghosts tank that handles like a Ferrari
>>
>>140866453
>the Ghosts tank that handles like a Ferrari
I was pretty annoyed about that, it felt so stupid
>>
>>140866385
Because its not exciting, realistic space combat would be two opposing fleets made up of ships primarily constructed of heat radiators firing at each other from hundreds of thousands of KM away, read atomic rockets if it still exists if you want to know quite how boring it would be in anything but strategy game.

They didn't try to implement classic dogfighting in space though, that was my entire point, they fell back to it after realising realistic combat would make it a boring game.

Also whats with all the aggression, just because people enjoy classic dogfighting which is visually exciting and tense doesn't make them retards, its the same reason in most action films they don't show the reality of modern air combat which is just sitting beyond visual range firing missiles at each other

So is xcom 2 better than xcom :enemy within or not?

i heard a lot of bad things about xcom 2 on release day.
>>
>>140870032
They're probably about on par, the strategy layer is better in EW but the tactics layer is better in Xcom2. Long War is still better than Xcom2 but with mods and DLC I would expect Xcom 2 to eclipse EW. If you enjoyed EW you'll enjoy Xcom2.

How is any of that boring?

You're making the same mistake all the other retards do: If it isn't spasm-inducing 'fun' it isn't 'fun'. Why in the fuck is someone like you even in an xcom thread? Your type is usually complaining about how boring turn-based gameplay is and how everything should be real time.
>>
>>140870882
>waiting for decades just to have your missiles to miss the enemy ship
>fun
>>
>>140870882
I don't think you quite comprehend the distances that are involved, it would be a salvo of torpedos firing, a big cannon firing or a little red light coming on and then a few minutes/hours later having a ship suddenly explode or watch an effectively invisible missile/projectile miss by several hundred km isn't that exciting and thats what realistic space combat is. The distances involved are massive and the same technology used to make space travel possible will make space combat just that.

Also it only works for a strategy game like I said if you actually bothered to read instead of sperging out at the first line, most genres are not suited to realistic combat because its not fun for it, it would be great fun in a turn based or real time strategy but it would be shit for a shooter or action RPG

Its funny how having a basic understanding of physics and not finding sitting watching nothing happen for several hours with an explosion happening once boring makes me apparantly incapable of enjoying xcom.

Holo targeting or Implacable?
>>
>>140870032
The only problem I have right now is that I can't adapt to the gorilla warfare. Even on normal my squad often loses 1-2 soldiers per mission which never happened in xcom. I hope I'm not a pleb in a few days and start to change my playstyle.
>>
>>140871195
It's so unfortunate that it's impossible for games to do anything like speed up or slow down or otherwise change the presentation of time to the player.

But no, go on with your caricature of a game, strawmanning all the way about how unfun it would be because of your contrived conditions of 'fun' and what this hypothetical game would play like.

Realistic sci-fi games can't be fun because if I made one, it wouldn't be fun. For example, don't you know how long it would take a missile to travel 1.2 million kilometers? Waiting for 2 IRL months while playing a game wouldn't be fun!

Therefore all realistic sci-fi can't be fun, because, as you can see from my example game, it's impossible to make it fun, you have to do so much boring stuff.

Specialist, I'm considering Implacable since three of my other guys ended up with Holo-targeting too
>>
>>140872418
They're good in the very early game to prevent your rookies getting oneshot.

Once they've got 7-8 health plus a point of armor, you don't have to worry about the vests anymore.
>>
>>140873010
Consider grabbing holo-targeting. A guardian specialist will be able to apply holo targeting onto a large number of enemies, allowing for easy clean up (in an ideal world of course). Then again, having holo targeting on a lot of soldiers is a bit redundant.

Not an exactly original idea but, what if instead of vests that take a slot, each vest can be added to base armor like a weapon mod? There would have to be some balancing stuff to work out but how about something like this:
No addition: No effect
Nanoscale vest: -1 mobility, +1 health
And so on. Each vest would give you soe small bonus at the cost of mobility.

More ideas
Tactical rigging: -1 mobility, 1 more utility slot
Mind shield: -1 mobility, +20 will
Jump jets: allows soldiers to jump up buildings
Shield generator: -1 mobility, the soldier starts with 3-5 shields.
Camo: decreases detection radius for this soldier.
Blast padding: -1 mobility, +1 armor, reduced damage from explosives.
What other useless items are there?
>>
>>140875978

Have you been aboard a frigate in the Wild Yonder at the bridge yet?

>>
>>140877449
http://www.projectrho.com/public_html/rocket/
Physics is constant.
>>
>>140877567
Yes, but the progression of technology is not. By the point we're dividing and forming militarized factions in space we'd probably have been there a long time.
>>
>>140877337
could make it "EOD gear"
-1 movement, +1 armor, +33% resistance to explosive damage
Then it makes blast padding really tempting for a sweet +3 armor, 66% explosive resistance
>>
>>140877669
For clarity, I meant to imply that humans have a habit of exponentially improving their technology with each successive breakthrough, instead of keeping to a linear scale.
Just look at the Renaissance for an example.
>>
>>140872186
I literally said it would work fine for a strategy game where that kind of thing can be abstracted. Do you have no reading comprehension?

>>140877669
And that will still be bound by the laws of physics, heat retention is always going to be a massive issue and the kind of tech needed to move a starship is going to make for an incredibly effective long range weapon.

The laws of physics are constant, nothing is going to change the fact that you'll be able to spot your target from vast differences away, nothing is going to change the fact that the same tech used to propel a starship can be turned around and used as a weapon. As technology advances with things like high powered lasers and railguns these things are going to become even more pronounced, if you can accelerate something to relativistic speed or project a beam that can heat a hull to millions of degrees in a second you're going to be engaging from very long distances and with the lack of things like air resistance and a medium for light to diffract in these are going to be a lot more powerful than on Earth.

It sucks but unless we discover some way to break the laws of physics thats what realistic space combat will be like. This is proved to an extent by history, as technology has advanced military technology has become longer and longer ranged

It's kind of what long war did with most of the additional armor/items. It's interesting when items are given a cost/benefit, but often times with the limited resources the biggest costs are opportunity, e.g. you couldn't equip the grenade.

I think nanoscale vests by themselves have a very small niche in the early game where you have weapon mods but are on the ropes with only rookies. Or are just on the ropes with only rookies that must eat the pain for a sergeant to rise.

How exactly does the wounded state system work in the game? So far it just seems completely random how long a character is going to be in the infirmary after a mission.
> Heavy gunner and a ranger both take damage during a mission
> Heavy gunner gets bound by snake tits and only takes 2 damage
> Ranger gets shanked by a advent stun lancer and takes 4 damage
> Heavy gunner is gravely wounded and has to spend over two weeks in the infirmary
> Ranger is just wounded and just needs to spend a couple days in the infirmary

How does that even make sense?
>>
>>140878794
I imagine it'd be very similar to submarine warfare from the cold war era. You get a image of where a craft is and a time-stamp then a moment later you get another, and the computer extrapolates a probably set of paths. You decide where to shoot and it's more like you're setting off a depth charge or flak than anything pinpoint.

Bust out your stopwatch

>>
>>140879076
It rolls for what wound you get, taking less damage increases you chance to take a light wound, but it's not guaranteed.
>>
>>140879076
The damage dealt to a unit deals wound points (based on percentage health damage), the amount of time needed out is based on these points, for some stupid reason the time required healing for the points has massive overlap.

For example you can get the max amount of woundpoints and roll a regular wound while someone can have a middle number of woundpoints and roll a gravely injured.

I've personally played a turn-based tabletop wargame using realistic physics doing 'spaceship dogfighting' and it works perfectly fine

You're just stuck on "space combat isn't/can't be fun because I said so"

It's literally just submarines in space except they have rocket engines on the back and skate around like they're on black ice while firing lasers and nuclear missiles at each other.

Yeah, totally not fun, sure thing bro.

Let me remind you I've actually PLAYED this.

ahurr durr space combat can't be fun or exciting; go fuck yourself. I'm sick of retards like you who parrot this stupid fucking meme every single fucking time realistic space combat comes up because you can't personally think of how it would be entertaining.
>>
>>140879076
Largely RNG, I think it's partially based off of Will.
Can open up the .ini files to check. There's a few mods that try to rebalance it based on damage and total health of the soldiers.

The hidden pronoun is (You) can open up the ini files to check.
>>
>>140879008
Would be nice, I kind of want a full on hard sci-fi crpg now.

>>140879246
Distances are so astronomical it would be a lot harder than that, a ship wouldn't be that big and you'd start engaging from a long way out, if you presume lasers continue to get more advanced you wouldn't even really need the timing.

>>140879327
Yes, they'd be taken out by long range cruise and ballistic missiles.

>>140879453
I've literally said it could be fun in the right setting.

You also aren't capable to grasp the fact that the realism of the setting and physics goes out the window if you have short range fights as any ship would be detectable from extreme ranges due to the coldness of space and any tech capable of taking you up there and making you effective at fighting would be effective at extreme ranges.

You're boardgame simply sounds like it has mildly realistic flight physics and then throws everything else out in the sake of "fun"

You clearly have no understanding of physics and technology if you think dogfighting in space is remotely realistic. I have literally linked resources by actual physicists explaining what realistic space combat would look like and you cling on to denying it would be like that.

It's about getting used to it and the dangers that are presented. I have to say getting used to fatigue again was another challenge for myself.
For xcom2, I definitely did a commander run with an extended campaign mod and then switched to legend in the third month.
Starting what I consider a true ironman legend game only recently and I have to say that experience has really helped me feel a lot more comfortable. Definitely there's salty moments, like finding a sectoid reanimating the body of my best armed soldier (so the equipment and the soldier were lost for good), but it's important to think about things as being expendable for the greater good of the campaign.

That feeling when you realize the sectoid is not a sectoid but a sectoid commander... I didn't think I could feel trepidation again, but there it is...

Ironman isn't a problem once you start removing bullshit RNG stuff and you've got more tools to counter bullshit RNG stuff.

Basically, it's great once you're mid-late game.

It's a huge pain in the ass early game though, because it's piss easy to wipe entire squads just because one guy triggered another pod and they have flanks on everyone.

Unfortunately, that's the nature of a game that relies on numbers to beat human players, rather than good AI.

Also, my guns look too dangerous. They're black, and they have attachments on them, so the enemy probably gets scared more easily and calls in reinforcements to deal with the 'assault weapons'.

>>140905548

it's great for anyone likely to be either staying with height advantage some distance from the enemy, or for anyone who's gonna be picking off exposed targets from a distance

I find though, with OW infantry or scouts, sometimes using the DMR is just asking to get the close range aim penalties. Rocketeers and Harrier infantry can get a lot from em, but you need a bit of shotgun support from support classes if you do that

Alright, beat the game on normal. I like that they rebalanced the action economy, and that I can't just spam assaults all over the place.
Psi seems absolutely game breaking, and hacking seems of marginal utility, the tradeoff doesn't seem worth the benefit a lot of the time. Game seems just as focused on not letting enemies have a turn as EW.

Is Classic difficulty more of a balanced experience?
>>
>>140935821
I'd still say that classic (commander) is still the most balanced between " a challenge" but still fun for most people just like in X1.

Psi is definitely broken, they just bring too much utility and damage, and with so many abilities the cooldowns hardly matter. Stasis is arguably the best ability in the game, or at least is in the running for it.

Primarily commanding heroes in the single player was infinitely more fun than a quasi-RTS with sort-of-but-not-really base building and resource generation that was present in DoW1.

If I wanted a decent mix of RTS and RPG I'd play Spellforce or Spellforce 2 again. Dawn of War 1 couldn't even live up to those games despite being sci-fi instead of of high fantasy.

Hello /xcg/

So, recently, I added a new concept to my mod, which is I added supplies as a cost for research. I added this in order to increase the early and mid game tension and as a way to limit the player from becoming op through the selling of resources, items, etc.

In practice, I created a hectic early game, where some research is unobtainable til a supply raid happens or you're forced to sell your items.

However, there is an issue with research just on the backburner all the time, which can get boring. How do you think i can fix this without removing the supply requirement entirely? Also any other interesting mechanics/ideas you'd like to share?

Could actually make more research items take a minimum level of scientists just to start. Not sure how easy or hard that would be to implement though.
>>
>>140943996
decrease research times and turn it from a slow, cautious if-you-lose-a-man-you're-fucked early game to send-forth-rookies-to-the-harvester-of-souls early game
and to prevent any blatant cheese, you only have a limited number of free rookies, and after that point, hiring costs start increasing based on how many you've gotten killed (since it would take a hefty sum to convince people to die if you're a shitty commander or just allahu akbar everything)
>>
>>140944256
I know that there was a couple or researches that required a certain amount of staff, I think it was the sectoid autopsies or psionics. Will take a look at it

>>140944545
I don't really agree with most of your suggestions but I can see where you're coming from. I don't agree with the entire "rookies to the slaughter" approach, yes rookies should be weaker and much more vulnerable than your veterans, but they still should have a chance and a use for something. I do agree with the costs increasing with more losses approach though, it would be something above my current experience level but I will keep it in mind. As for the decrease in research times? No, I like long research times as they encourage a hunt for scientists and a need for the black market to buy rushes, its an additional struggle in the strategic game
>>
>>140943996
So I don't know what your mod is, but the issue I'm seeing is the enemy will be outpacing XCOM. A supply cost added too researching magnetic weapons means that it will be even longer before I can afford to build them from. In the mean time, the doom counter has put on a jetpack and is flying high. ADVENT will be sending out more advanced ayys like mutons and I will be stuck trying to fight them and destroy facilities with ballistics.

Easy solution would be to slow down threat level increase and the doom timer.
>>
>>140944545
oh right, increase mission frequency early game too then have a tightened advent security moment that reduces mission rates
and make bradford fly faster
>>
>>140945563
I think the best way to describe it is to make early game strategy an opposite of late game, details dont matter much

Well I'm off for another clash with the Mercenaries, so hopefully it goes better this time (16/18 died of my squad died only killing two enemies).

This time I'm packing low/mid tier laser weapons, a few basic plasma wepaons, posion nades, ellerium nades, lots of HE bricks, and a spore launcher. Completely dropped all ballistic weapons as even the best are near useless against their armor.

Still might have to beat a hasty retreat.

The first guy tanks 7 laser shots before going down to a plasma bolt. This might sound bad, but the fact that I've killed an enemy in the first turn only using 6 soldiers means I'm miles ahead of where I was last time. He's got the most basic armor though, so I'm not sure how many hits the more elite troops will take.

Yes, that would be preferable.

A) However, all damage rolls from guns in this game are 0-200%
B) I have no indication of how much damage they take in game
C) I have no previous experience with how many hits they take from either plasma or laser

I'm flying pretty blind right now, so I was trying to see how successful the laser weapons would be since that is what the majority of my team has.

Unfortunately I only connect with a few laser weapons shots and a few of my hardest hitting ballistic weapons so the captain looks to be relatively unscathed. The plasma weapons I obtained have the best damage of any weapons I currently own, but their drawback for being low tier is that their accuracy is more that of an smg, but with only 8 round clips I can't take advantage of any sort of volume of fire. I miss the 80% and 68% aim shots my two soldiers take.

In the meantime I'm popping smoke near an enemies position and preparing to find out just how effective melee damage is against them. Research showed the armor didn't have any cutting resistance, so I'm hoping my two brave and suicidal gals can successfully grapple with the enemy at CLOSE RANGE

Civies are dropping like flies, so I'm not really counting on saving them. In PirateZ civies are actually a mix of humans, but mostly alien-human hybrids so they are actually quiet durable and will take a good deal of punishment versus early game weapons to put down.

The owners of the alien franchise have taken people to court over making xenomorph mods before, they don't care about winning, they care about bankrupting the mod creator through legal fees so no one else does it
>>
>>140975025
The 3D model he was using was a direct rip from Alien: Isolation. It is the property of that company and using it without their permission is stealing. From my understanding the company in question is also very aggressive about defending their property so it was unlikely that he would get permission.

If he made a 3D model from scratch it would have been fine, but that is a lot of work (which is why using someone else's model counts as stealing).
>>
>>140975529
>The 3D model he was using was a direct rip from Alien: Isolation. It is the property of that company and using it without their permission is stealing

Is potentially copyright infringement, but it would have to be taken to court and proven as such, because using works like this for mods is well within the bounds of Fair Use.

So not only is it NOT stealing, it's not even guaranteed to be copyright infringement.
>>
>>140975721
Literally doesn't matter, they'll still take him to court and throw money at the case until everyone stops.
>>
>>140975832
Literally it does matter. They can take him to court over it, but they don't have a guarantee of winning, and they're on the hook for criminal charges if you can prove they're sending off copyright notices with malicious intent, which is implied by your "They want to just throw money at it to shut down anyone making mods and ruin their life forever" spiel.

How many corporate cocks do you suck daily?

Top secret protip: merc suits are a uniform membrane, the protection is the same from every direction.

>>
>>140976098
Nigger it doesn't even matter if they have a guaranteed win. They have a legal team and money, which means they're more likely to win than the average person just because they know how to build a case. 99.9% of the time, the threat of legal action is more than enough to force them to cease, because the average person doesn't think they have a chance and don't want to risk it.
>>
>>140976098
>understanding what they do is sucking corporate cock
Sensitive much? They have enough of a case to take it to court because its their IP and the laws are in their favour, they don't care about actually winning, they care about getting the other far poorer party to back down with lengthy and expensive appeal processes and court cases.

It sucks but at the end of the day the law is written in favour of the IP holders and proving malicious intent is a lot harder than proving its their IP.
>>
>>140976265

>>
>>140976385
>>140976393
And let's get back to what really happens:

They don't take you to court, they send you a takedown notice, and then you can choose to fight it in court or not.

It's not a situation where you make a mod and then some lawyer guy says, "Hey you owe us $2 billion dollars see you in court next week."

As shitty as the DMCA is, there's still a process to it, and these companies know they won't get a dime out of your average modder, it's nothing but a cost on their bottom line. A takedown notice is a lot cheaper and a lot easier than a court battle, and they'll only specifically target individuals who they feel they have a good case against should it go to court.

You people have an absolutely infantile fantasy of how the courts work with copyright law. You don't even understand that copyright isn't the same thing as stealing, yet you feel the need to lecture everyone on the fine points of copyright law?
>>
>>140976814
They do not care about the fact they won't get a penny off the modder, they know if they don't take them to court after the takedown notice they lose credibility with these things and in the future people will ignore the notices. They have the money to bankrupt the modder.

I find it kind of funny how you're insulting people and putting words in our mouths while saying we have infantile fantasies, no ones said copyright infringement is the same as stealing
>>
>>140976814
>being this pro-corporate
You disgust me

>They do not care about the fact they won't get a penny off the modder, they know if they don't take them to court after the takedown notice they lose credibility with these things and in the future people will ignore the notices.

The reason they do this is to protect potential future profits. Usually a company doesn't send out takedown notices unless there's a conflict of interests - like when Microsoft sent a take down notice to the Halogen team who were working on a Halo mod for C&C: Generals. Microsoft didn't do this because they thought the brand would lose credibility; they did it because Halogen would've been competing with their upcoming Halo Wars product, and it was easier to shut down that competition with a takedown notice and courts, than it was on competing in terms of merits of the games.

IP holders of the alien franchises tend to be more litigious because they're part of the hollywood bloc of retards who still think all copyright is literally stealing, but even they only send takedown notices when/where they notice it and think the person won't try to fight it, or can't effectively fight it. Most of it is a grey area, but circumstances depending it's very likely that most of the stuff receiving a takedown notice would be justified under Fair Use ruling.

>no ones said copyright infringement is the same as stealing

>>140975529
>It is the property of that company and using it without their permission is stealing.
>>
So Fair Use relies on 4 factors:
1. The purpose and character of the use (What is it being used for?)
2. The nature of the copyrighted work (What kind of work is being used?)
3. The amount and substantiality of the portion used in relation to the copyrighted work as a whole (How much of the work is being used?)
4. The effect of the use upon the potential market for or value of the copyrighted work (How is this use going to affect the creator’s ability to sell the work?)

Using a rip of a 3D model means that it will pass 3 of the 4 test for Fair Use. While the IP holders for the xenomorph could attempt a take-down notice, it would not hold up in court.

Also, fuck you guys for making me spend the past 20 minutes reading court documents.

You're second point is agreeing with me, they're litigious and they know modders do not have the money to fight it so they send them takedown notices and if they try and resist, they take them to court at which point they'll almost certainly back down. Corporations are not these friendly blobs that won't take you to court because they probably won't win if they still benefit from taking you to court to prove a point.

>>140979228
>it would not hold up in court
Once again that does not matter, they will still take you to court and just tie you up in legal fees, they don't care about getting money of you, they care about making sure no one does what you're doing anymore because they're a shitty megacorporation and when it falls through theres no penalties for them as its still close enough to justify them trying and theres no way to prove malicious intent. The laws are in there favour and so is threatening small people.
>>
>>140979228
corps have big enough legal teams to find ways to argue all 4 of those points being breached, they'll get thrown out eventually if its fought but they can argue it long enough to scare the other guy.

If this is you don't have another scout, then conceal. If you already have a scout then run and gun.

For early missions, run and gun is more versatile if you just need him for damage and is my recommendation since he's already phantom.
If you don't have another ranger for covert extractions, the ranger is the one class that it's great to have someone with the opposite build as blademaster and conceal for the uber scouting options.

So there is a new mod that adds a notoriety rating. It is calculated based on your soldiers' ranks and affects future missions. If you take a mission while notoriety is high, Advent gets different boosts. Haven't tried it yet, but looks fun.

They have anon, it is called All Armor Options. Makes all armors available on all types. Word of warning though, many mods like MGS V BDUs and Halo Armor make a copy of each piece for each armor type. When combined with All Armor Options, you will see all 7 "copies" of the same armor. You can go into the config files of the other mods and delete all the non-kevlar versions to get rid of this, although that is a bit of a pain.

I don't know. Probably the same way that Alien 3 is his favorite movie. He also prefers the Star Wars prequels to Episode 7 because "they are more connected to the originals".

Thank god Alien 5 is retconning 3, so I can rub that in his face.

>>141062080
The movie is satire
The book is deadly serious
The two are incredibly different and have barely anything to do with each other.

>>
>>141064154
I say action but it might not be the best word, if it wasn't a star wars film it would be a lot more enjoyable is what I'm trying to say
>>
>>141063796
while Ep. 1 was shit, the Prequels gave us the Clone Wars, which IMO is one of the best pieces of canon (and is leagues better than whatever Disney can cook up). So far, all Disney has proven is that they can put out shitty Ep.4 remakes to get all the kiddies and nostaligiatards salivating and buying tons of merch

tbqh they should have just made the Prequels about the Clone Wars instead of Annie's relationship/sand hate issues
>>
>>141064725
Clone Wars is still canon
>>
>>141064651
I kinda see what you mean. It still would still need editing though. Jar Jar didn't add anything, all of the characters felt flat, and the plot was...tangled. I feel it could have been a good coherent story.

>>
>>141065772
Its a classic, worth a read but be aware its a whole-hearted endorsement of fascism.
>>
>>141065694
It needs an edit but it at least keeps you interested, its a solid 6 or 7 out of 10. Ep2 is just boring until the Battle of Geonosis which still isn't that good.

Ep2 does have the detective Obi-Wan segments which are good though, doesn't make up for the rest of it
>>
>>141065772
I remember trying to read it in high school and giving up. Of course, I grew up watching Roughnecks, so I might have had unrealistic expectations. It is more of the guys political views than a sci fi adventure.

Give it a shot, and if you find it too dry try Armor by John Steakley.
>>
>>141066250
>It is more of the guys political views
Thats an important thing to remember when reading it, it was written as both a novel and a political essay
>>
>>141066250
I read through Goodreads for Armor, it looks great. Considering what >>141066404 said I think I'll start there instead, many thanks anon!
>>
>>141066751
Make sure to at least give it a try, even if you don't agree with the politics (like almost everyone) its still good to see alternate viewpoints and its good sci-fi as well.
>>
>>141066751
Armor is a great book, one of my all time favorites. If you want another good sci-fi book series, try reading Dragonriders of Pern.
>>
>>141066404
There is a reason why it is required reading in a couple military academies. There is a substantial portion not just on politics, but also why war happens and how we should train officers.
>>
>>141066870
>even if you don't agree with the politics (like almost everyone)
Speak for yourself you fucking commie.
>>
>>141066870
It's not so much that I don't want to read it because I disagree with his politics, I'm just looking for hard sci-fi rather than a political essay - though it's definitely on my list as well! It seems real good.

>>141067097
What's Dragonriders of Pern about?
>>
>>141067746
Space settlers who colonized a planet that has another planet pass by and drop deadly space worms that burn through everything. Somehow the solution to this is to bio-engineer dragons so they burn the space worms before they hit the ground.
>>
>>141043806
That's a lot of ayys, how is the campaign going?
>>
>>141067746
If you want hard scifi go read stuff like Ringworld, Dune, or anything by Isaac Asimov.
>>
>>141067746
It is a childrens/teen series based around the world of Pern. Pern is basically a more peaceful version of medieval Europe. However every so many centuries, something called Thread (silver worms that secrete acid and reproduce super fast) fall from the sky. The only people who can save the planet are the dragonriders, humans who have bonded with a dragon. Dragons are telepathic, can teleport, and breathe fire after chewing brimstone. Fun story for kids, still enjoyable as an adult.

I called it sci-fi as a joke, since one of the plot twists is you discover that the humans originally came to the planet in a space ship and lost all their technology when the first threadfall happened.

The Foundation Series is basically the fall of Space Rome, but a group is established to try and make it less harmful. His other big book is I, Robot, which deals with AI and all that jazz, it has a whole series too. Nightfall deals with two competing universes that are able to generate energy from the other. It's alright. Nothing particularly special.

It introduced the concept of power armor into the mainstream. (Although I'm sure other authors came up with the concept before him)

The book itself is basically a coming of age story as a guy goes through bootcamp in a near-future earth. Like 80% of the book deals with going through bootcamp.

Couple things to keep in mind: Just because Heinlein says it, doesn't mean it's necessarily true.

And, the political institutions and ideology in his books are more like experimentation to see what works out and how it might work; not actual endorsements of any political structure in particular, which is what a lot of retards on both the left and right fail to understand. The society depicted in Starship Troopers is at complete odds with the society depicted in The Moon is a Harsh Mistress, for just one example.

I'd give the book 8/10, and that's being a bit generous to it.

Heinlein's views were all over the place throughout his life, its unfair to call people retards for reading the book as its written and not trying to figure out what the fuck Heinlein actually thought.

It certainly reads like an endorsement of the political views espoused in it and while you're probably right about it being him experimenting with ideas its still easy to read it at face value.

Of course anyone who criticises the man himself or says you shouldn't read it because of the political views espoused and toyed with is an actual retard.

>Of course anyone who criticises the man himself or says you shouldn't read it because of the political views espoused and toyed with is an actual retard.

Well, that's just the point of it. People call Heinlein a "Fascist" and a "right-wing bigot" because of Starship Troopers, yet they've never actually read the book, or any of his other books, and don't know a goddamn thing about what he believed.

I don't think the government described in Starship Troopers could ever work, the biggest issue is stemming from the enfranchised group having too much incentive to keep others away from similar enfranchisement, while simultaneously having the power and authority to do so. The core tenet of this government is that anyone can become a citizen, if they put in the effort.

Yet it's trivial for the citizens to make citizenship almost impossible to acquire, all the while being able to vote for their personal benefits to the detriment of non-citizens, who of course, have no say at all.

Imagine for example, that there is a pie and citizens get 80% of that pie. The issue comes up; how should we divide this pie to be more fair? The only ones who get to vote are the citizens. The citizens say; "I had to work hard to gain this citizenship, so I deserve more than half of this pie." and the citizens vote themselves another nibble more of the pie and now they get 82.5% of it.

The non-citizens are then told, "if you want some pie, then you better goddamn well apply for citizenship and earn your place". Millions and millions of non-citizens go for it, this of course means the pie is further divided amongst a larger population; individually each citizen gets less.

But the citizens can vote and decide on what sorts of jobs must be done to gain citizenship. So of course, they start an interstellar war and throw all these good people into the meatgrinder, with absolutely no intention of any of them actually surviving. In fact, all the better that they don't survive at all.

I think you're projecting a bit, not to mention the book goes through quite a bit explaining the path to citizenship and that military service is only one way to gain it, and in fact the most discouraged and least popular way.

This is like right in the beginning of the book senpai.
>>
>>141080138
What is he trying to say is that since only citizens can vote, they can change the requirements for citizenship. Once they have done that, they can effectively make laws that only benefit themselves at the cost of non-citizens.

>>141078004
>what the fuck Heinlein actually thought
Did you ever read Time Enough for Love? I read it a bit ago so I don't remember most of it, but the only parts that stuck with me is that apparently once (medical) science moves far enough forward I should be creating female twins from my DNA and travelling back in time to meat my mother all so that I can have sex with all of them. I'm sure there was some other points elsewhere, but they really got lost in the shuffle...

>>141079650
I don't disagree, I just thought you were being a bit vague and presuming people that read the book as an endorsement of fascism due to not knowing Heinlein's history were retards
>>
>>141080138
You don't seem to fundamentally understand what I'm pointing out:

There is no reason for it to stay the way Heinlein describes it, and in fact there is every incentive for the enfranchised group to keep the enfranchised group small while voting more gibs for themselves to the detriment of every non-enfranchised member of society.

His political structure is naive as fuck and assumes people won't be complete assholes to each other.

The political structure in The Moon is a Harsh Mistress is a little better, because at least it assumes everyone to be complete assholes to each other, and the biggest assholes who offend the most or the wrong people are quickly disposed of. Unfortunately, that structure doesn't take into account organized crime or warlords.

>It's naive
>because I say it is

I'm going to be the smart one here and remind you that the type of government he was exploring was fundamentally very different than any we are familiar with, and a very idealized pseudo-Constitutional fascist republic that has only existed in the book you clearly didn't pay much attention to when you read it.

Apart from it being made painstakingly clear that citizenship conferred little privileges other than the right to vote, but carried with it a tremendous amount of responsibility. It was also stated in no uncertain terms that citizenship was not necessary to be powerful or wealthy, Rico's father in the beginning of the book is literally the wealthiest person we ever meet in the book, as well as the only non-military character we meet in any position of power. This principle was core to the founding beliefs of the government, one that can't be done away with or made inappropriately challenging without invalidating citizenship itself. Not to mention that Citizenship comes with a heavy dose of psychiatric screening and something bordering on patriotic brainwashing to instill a love of the system as it is.

What you're saying could technically happen, in the same way that everyone in the United States could vote in representatives from a Monarchist party that would amend the constitution to turn us into a straight up Kingdom. If that sounds absurd that's the point, the idea is as stupid to you as your idea would be as stupid to them.

Those aren't killing holes anons, those are breathing holes. XCOM saw how many Advent had passed out and decided to use their patented long-distance breathing hole maker to ensure that no one drowned on their vomit.
>>
So I have been thinking about XCOM2, and I have finally realized what was bugging me about the game. I want to start off by saying that it is a good game and I enjoy it a lot. It is definitely an improvement on EU/EW. My issue is that I don't feel like a guerrilla resistance group. There are two main things that prevent my immersion.
First is that I don't feel like I have initiative in the Strategic Layer. All I do is scan a region to add it and wait for guerilla events to occur. Yes there are the occasional base assaults and story missions, but I spend most of the game scanning.
Second is that I don't feel like the underdog. ADVENT has been in control of the planet for 20 years. They have raised a clone army on top of their legions of aliens. They have constructed dozens of factories to produce the arms and armors for their troops on top of countless mechanized forces. They should have the advantage. The way the game tries to get this across is through the Dark Events, but those only provide a small, temporary boost to ADVENT.

I think a better way would be if ADVENT had continent wide bonuses. For example, ADVENT forces in Africa might have better robots while North America has better clones. Dark events still occur as normal, but the bonus they give are permanent and added to whatever continent they occur on instead of being global.
Once you have made contact will all the regions of a continent, you gain the location of an ADVENT facility. Destroying this facility will remove all bonuses for ADVENT on that continent on top of lowering the doom counter by a tick. There are still facilities that appear in a region every so often, but they would provide a small, global benefit to ADVENT.

Thoughts?
>>
>>141108020
I agree, ADVENT needs to feel a lot stronger. One idea that has been bouncing around is changing timers from being hard deadlines to being a constant stream of reinforcements.
>>
>>141109193
I like that, but maybe a soft timer and a hard timer. Like after 8 turns reinforcements will drop every turn, but you still have 5 more turns to evac.
The hard timer is supposed to represent enemy fighters in the AO forcing Firebrand to leave.
>>
>>141108020
I agree with a lot of your points. Considering that you're supposed to be in a much weaker state compared to EU, you'd think that the pacing and atmosphere would be pretty different.

>lack of initiative
this could be countered by giving the player a selection of minor guerilla ops (giving little in the way of rewards but also being short in length) like bombing security checkpoints and infrastructure like rail lines. These ops would always be available, and would be replaced when completed after a short scan. Maybe implement some sort of "compounding effect" mechanic so you don't feel like you're grinding scores of mini-missions for spare change?

>underdog
some anons were talking about making Dark Events last indefinitely until they are dealt with via a facility assault. You could also make them stack on top of each other, which I'd imagine would make the aforementioned mini-missions quite a challenge

Maybe add covert operatives back in? You can send them off to gather intel, try and find VIPs, find a convoy to raid, or even give XCOM a small buff for a month similar to specialists hacking.

Perhaps the different types of missions have different chances of success and intel costs (aside from gathering intel). If you fail then you have to do a mission to extract the operative. A successful intel means your operative's mission was a success too.

it'd be nice if it were possible to actually be stealthy; including killing advent without raising an alarm.

But I think there'd be too much coding involved to really make it possible.

Also, I think it should be more likely for your soldiers to be captured; then you could have a jailbreak mission to get them back.

I'd also like to see fighting take place in large buildings, but the LOS code seems really fucky when you start working with multi-story buildings.

The Scout class mod has a passive ability that lets you keep concealment if you kill the enemy you attack.

What could be cool is if instead of two states (uncontacted and contacted), parts of the map could be Hostile, Neutral or Friendly. if you try to contact a hostile territory, you should need to do a mission like destroying an armory or killing some kind of ADVENT Commander. The territory then becomes Neutral. Making the territory Friendly should involve cripling ADVENT's ability to respond to anything you do, like destroying a Trooper cloning facility or a dropship repair yard.

It would also be neat for Dark Events to make facilities that you could attack, like Alien Cipher would spawn a Comm Facility assault mission, or Viper Rounds would spawn an Armory or Production Facility mission. Failing these would make the Dark Event permanent, or the Dark Event would continue forever until the facility it spawned is destroyed.
>>
>>141127975
Definitely the sort of thing needed

The benefit of gorilla operations is that you attack when/where you want and you're extremely hard to root out and destroy.

There really needs to be a LOT more play on intel, concealment, sabotage, etc. I don't really want to fault the team for making basically xcom EU 2.0 because it's not necessarily bad, but the setting and circumstances of the game don't lend themselves to EU's setup and they basically ignored that.

IMO, there shouldn't be a non-stop stream of ops that you're basically forced to do or else, every 1-2 weeks. The game plays like you're still old xcom defending earth from the Ayy invasion. The initiative should be in xcom's court now; you should pick when and where you attack, if you attack at all.

Introduce some play back and forth with advent needing to gather intel to conduct offensive operations - having to kidnap soldiers, scientists, infiltrate rebel communities, etc.

I'm still not entirely sure how best to work all of that out, but still - the game needs to be more cloak and dagger and a lot less pure offensive operations. (for that matter, EU still managed a limited version of this with the exalt missions)
>>
>>141044652
Some of the timers are pretty bullshit.

The VIP rescue/capture missions in particular are the worst offender. I think you get 7 or 9 rounds by default - usually 4-5 pods on the map. I guess the intent is that you break in and get out ASAP, but the nature of the game doesn't lend itself to that without serious lossing from you triggering every goddamn pod and having 20+ advent shooting at your nigger ass each round. Sheer volume wins RNG fights; there's no cover in the game that's going to save you from so many shots.

But if you try and take it slow and knock out each pod one by one, you don't have the time to complete it.

And if you fail the mission, you don't simply miss out on intel or an engineer. You lose your entire squad. So these missions are basically: Do you want to lose some of your squad, or all of your squad?

And that's just stupid. Especially for a game that puts so much emphasis on individual soldiers to the point that they're not replaceable mooks you don't really give a damn about. Losing a couple experienced soldiers fucks you over completely.

The game needs to be 'failsafe' not 'failhard'. At the very least on the first two difficulty settings.

I did, and it looks to me like you need to get good. I warned you that it was a step up in difficulty in the Pastebin description.

Anyway, it's supposed to be a smash and grab and it literally tells you that after you pop concealment there's going to be reinforcements until you bail. There aren't even that many pods on the map to activate at the start, so you can advance pretty unhampered close to the VIP until the dropships start coming. That mod adds two other mission types by the way, both are really fun.

anarchy's children and alien hunters don't fit the xcom aesthetic whatsoever, and their DLC so far is just cosmetics; no real gameplay changes.

>XCOM 2 players have a new DLC pack to look forward to next week. Following the Anarchy's Children pack, the new DLC Alien Hunters adds new campaign content, including a new mission, weapons and armor, and a new update to the Avenger's Armory called "Hunter's Lodge." Players can also expect to go up against three new "Ruler" aliens in combat.

>The Rulers include the Viper King, the Berserker Queen, and the Archon King. They appear randomly throughout the campaign after completing the new DLC mission and each have their own tactics. However, the Rulers only show up for a limited time, after which they'll escape the map and return in another mission later on. You can see what they look like in the gallery below.
>The four new weapons include the Bolt Caster, which delivers high damage in single-shots; the Hunter's Axe, a new blade weapon that can be thrown; the ShadowKeeper pistol, a gun that is guaranteed to hit and conceal you if you kill an enemy with it; and the Frost Bomb grenade, which freezes targets temporarily. The catch with these weapons is there's only one of each and if a soldier equipped with them dies, you have to carry their bodies to the Skyranger or you'll lose them permanently.

>The new DLC comes with three new armor sets, which you'll have to create with the Ruler aliens' corpses. The armor gives you a higher chance of causing the corresponding Ruler's subordinates to panic--for example, wearing the Viper King's armor is more likely to scare Vipers. The armor sets also grant unique abilities to the user, such as boosters that let you fly around the map.

>Alien Hunters arrives alongside a compatibility patch that also makes general bug fixes, optimizes performance, and balances the single player and multiplayer modes.

probably a retexture entirely, but I seriously doubt it took more than a couple hours of an artist's time.

The new meshes are likely a similar story.

Overall I'd wager less than 24 hours of work put into the viper; as it should be. No reason for a model to be ridiculously complicated/time consuming to make.

Whenever I do certain missions, I can expect to always encounter ayys with heavy weapons, particularly explosives. Missions such as larger UFO landings/crashes, and some terror missions.
Whenever I happen to be on said missions, I tend to encounter a crash whenever an ayy uses a particular explosive. Not sure if it's the blaster launcher, but some sort of launcher crashes my game with no error window upon the explosion, regardless of whether or not it hits anything. Anyone got an explanation for this?

>inb4 they do a numeric health display or show value for a base game, just like with SWMT and zip mode

Its literally saying there's at least one new special mission which introduces the rulers into the game world, three new unique 'ruler' aliens that will appear on random missions after that and a bunch of unique weapons and armor you can get from murdering them and defiling their corpses.

Which really isn't anything new to the gameplay.

It's just additional content.

to me, new gameplay would be like, something fundamentally changing the way things work on the strategy layer; changes to how the tactical layer work; stuff that changes how the game is played.

This is just the same old game, but new aliens.

"new gameplay" is just marketing speak.

So this is exactly like the DLC plan for xcom2012? purely cosmetic DLC, then a minor DLC with a few new missions and other things and then an expansion?
>>
>before release, i thought that alien hunters will be big great dlc with coverops-like style missions to hunt alien rulers and real changes to gameplay
>it's just 3 boss aliens
On the bright side, look like we gonna get some more ui options for full-body armor? Hopefully modders can do something more with this(then again nobody really did anything with separate arms and shoulders that anarchy childre introduced and it was tied to AC torsos)
>>
>>141148445
Well firaxis is not really known for their different approaches and revolutinary methodics in sales and marketing. I think we could've expected that it will be similar to EU in terms of dlc and receive a EW-like expansion in a year or so. Just like every other game firaxis did in a last years.
>>
>>141148792
I don't know why people didn't, the signs were there from the moment it was announced, the initial marketing speak made it sound relatively small and if people didn't realise then the achievements should've been the bigger give-away.

Firaxis are a predictable company and this follows what they did for EU.

>Each unique armor set also strikes fear into the subordinate alien caste.
So, uh...if you wear icarus armor and encounter archon, they will panic or get some other debuff? Or is it wording again

They said from the start the tiddies are just venom sacs, and Thin Men were.. well.. Thin MEN. It's the same species, so makes sense that the Vipers are male too, despite appearances fooling Snekfags into thinking they were females due to the similarities to human females.
