You can get somewhat useful items out of killing them. I've gotten some of the identification powder, plus an item that can restore around ~60ish MP. The XP is alright too, if you can get through that regen.
Only way I've killed them was through eventually knocking them out, then using the Charge divinity right after.

While Rorona has better features I think the game's structure is much more linear and it hurts the replay value. Totori is much more open which I really liked and was surprised to see from the series, it's pretty much an open-world RPG in gameplay and that's not something you see often in JRPGs. Meruru was just like the in-between that didn't do anything really impressive to me and I thought the new characters and the story in general were much less interesting. Also I didn't like Rorona being turned into a kid, while loli Rorona was pretty cute I still much more enjoyed the older Rorona from Totori. Even tough I got the plat for Totori, I can see myself replaying it in the future because the game is so open and I'd want to see Totori, Rorona and the others again, while I don't see myself replaying Rorona (Too restrictive) or Meruru (Don't care about most of the characters except the returning ones). Finally Astrid is worst girl and Totori is the only game that doesn't feature her which gives it more point to me.

That's another thing for me - I prefer the more restrictive nature of things. I'm surprised I liked Totori at all considering I don't really like open world games. I can see why someone would find Rorona restrictive, though. Meanwhile, I think Meruru struck a palatable balance between the two so gameplay wise I favored it the most, though you do have a point with the characters. I really like Hanna and Keina has her cute moments but beyond them the new cast wasn't as good as the other 2 games.

Their appeal is not universal, that's for sure. Past the veneer of cute girls doing cute things lie an in depth alchemy system and constant time management. They're actually quite good at what they do mechanically, there's actually a bit of a learning curve to it all and unless you're ungodly good or have a guide you won't be clearing them on your first run. But I cannot stress this enough - THEY ARE NOT FOR EVERYONE. If you aren't obsessive compulsive about making the best items and equipment and managing your time as efficiently as possible, your mileage may vary.

Since you like RPGs I don't see why you wouldn't like them. The battle mechanics are simple, and Rorona especially is pretty easy, but the games make up for it with other stuff (Events don't happen in a linear order, item crafting plays an important part of the game, friendship can be raised for bonuses and event flags, multiple endings). There's a time mechanic similar to the Persona games. It's one of the most popular series here and it's not just because of the cute girls.

You don't need anywhere remotely close to be making the best equipment or managing your time that well. It definitely doesn't "require a guide to clear them first run". What a joke. You're making it sound like it's some hardcore experience to not get a bad ending.

Only Totori can be that difficult but mainly because it's so open ended that you can waste too much time. Even then, a whole chunk of the game is optional. The rest are very straight forward, and Atelier Rorona Plus is a very easy game with all the equipment that's just handed to you.

All you should say is that getting all the endings in a single playthrough is impossible without a guide, but that's absolutely not a requirement to enjoy the game.

Gotta give the devs credit, they work with the assets they have. Repetition is a common trait in Vanillaware games but I do think a penchant for arcade-like action shines through with efforts like Odin Sphere, Muramasa, and Dragon's Crown. I don't think there's anything wrong with liking that sort of thing, really.

At some point, the male starts getting a "bad feeling," since the pathway ahead, which would pass under some trees, would be dark, and because it was getting to be quite late. He ignores the feeling and presses on. In later rehearsings of the story, the female would say that she had felt the same feeling at what was probably the same time, though she didn't know the trail like he did. A minute later, the feeling came back to the male. He ignored it again, and started walking a bit of the way into the trees when his foot hit something "soft" in the middle of the path. Under the trees, it was too dark to see just what this soft thing was, and the feeling came back stronger than ever. Instead of finding out what his foot had bumped into, he and the female both agreed to hightail it out of there... Years later, after being married for some time, they were watching an interview with the serial killer, Ted Bundy. In response to a question asking him to describe the time that he felt the closest to being caught, he explained about the night that he lured a girl into Provo Canyon, and had just killed her when he heard some people coming up the trail. He explained how he hid in the trees just in time, only to watch some guy walk right into the body, and for some reason, just turn around and walk away.
