I know that most of people are turned off by the combination of dungeon crawling and touch combat, but I can't stress out enough how amazing Severed is.
The exploration is truly satisfying, and every single room is handcrafted and not copypasted similarly other bigger games. The game also keeps teasing you about places you can't reach, building up the experience, the music and the minimalistic but appealing visual design help a lot in this regard.
Also the gameplay is tight as fuck, keeping you always on edge: the touch based input is not an issue at all, it's the other way around actually.
The fact that the game is a Vita exclusive and really cheap, made impossible for me to resist the tentation to buy it D1, also the devs are really passionate and cool guys.
But I can understand if a lot of people are turned off by such a strange game anyway.

I've got L1 and R1 mapped to the right analog, R2 mapped to the R button, and the D-pad mapped to the left analog, all of which help, but I've still gotten screwed over by reaverbots and the Bonne family 'cause of the controls (somehow have made it to the boat boss).

Xillia 1 is basically Jude lusting for Milla, since she basically perfect.
There is a scene on the cave where they are pretty close, but Milla misunderstand because she is not used to being human. Jude was too scared and had to much respect for Milla to try anything funny.
There are also Elize's crush on Jude at first, but I guess that's what 12 year or girls do when they meet Professor Matis. Also Leia, that at the end she understands she can't compare to Milla and leaves Jude to chase Alvin.

There are missed opportunities, I think. I wish more JRPG had some good romance stories or sidestories.
The last jrpgs I played that had that was Demon Gaze (not great romance but was there) and The Last Story (decent, main girl was cute)

If you played Xillia and didn't get that vibe from them then you're blind and deaf. It's even a major part of Jude's character in the first game that he goes from helping Milla because he has the hots for her, to realizing he needs to serious the fuck up.

Tales generally isn't too heavy on the romance in general because it's a series about groups of people travelling together - the focus in Tales stories is about having that 6~ people, their interactions, how they play off each other and if every game had major focus on romance, that would take away from the "adventuring group" focus and make the two in question stand out.

If you want romance that's all well and good, but not every game will have it and the one game that does have it but doesn't shove it in your face isn't proof the "japanese are scared of romance".

But presumably this is just more "shitty excuses" to you so I'm not sure why I'm bothering.

There's just the eye icon that locks on an enemy temporarily but it's not mandatory, you can press a button for it, but touching it is more useful since you can choose which enemy you want to look at.

You need to unlock the second character first and you can switch to her.
I can't remember if you have to beat the game but once you start unlocking costumes you can choose which skin you want to use.
