My co-survivor spawned with a simple flamethrower, and promptly started a raging forest fire. To add insult to injury, I chose a profession that doesn't start with a means to create fire. When I asked for some gear to try to complete her bullshit quest, what does she give me? A lighter, like 90% of my other starts? No. My firebug friend gave me a plastic bottle instead. You want EV to prevent getting beat up by something like a ettin, you want AC for things like hydras or killer bees

Any EV is always useful, there are some foos with terrible accuracy and you're always under a lot of attacks. Layered defenses is where it is at, 20AC 20EV is better than 40AC/EV. If you aren't getting a lot of value for going to really low numbers I wouldn't.

I've ascended a melee dude now it's time for a caster dude anons. I've tried many types of casters and they always splat to some ranged fuckery or random unique abilities that disable escapes.

Trying SpAE. Spriggans aptitude for stealth and speed to make initiating fights much easier even vs ranged opponents. Air Elementalist since it's the least shitty aptitude for destructive magics then go into transmutations for lich form, maybe translocations for some blink/dispersal.

Do I care about raising dex at all? What about dodge, ev, sh? I usually get to mid-game and splat right as my I'm getting higher level magic up, but before I can invest much into defenses.

Usually you get enough dex as an Sp that you can just dump it into int if you feel like going full spellsman.

I hate how much of a slog Crawl becomes near normal endgame

It turns into a mindless repetition of the same things you'd done the entire game prior. Getting runes is just playing the resistance roulette and then proceeding to do the same. Enemies have 3 settings: Swarming trash, free XP popcorn and bullshit

All interesting gameplay seems to happen at either early game or post-end.

This is worsened because Crawl is designed as a relatively "clean" game where you can't have cheesy fun a la Nethack, while being long enough that its streamlined gameplay seems to lose all charm after a while, whereas other rogueikes on the same vein try to be "short but sweet".

I'll go splat this character in Depths, honestly I can't be fucked to do branches at this point

Get gud. Straightswords are easy modo. But really, if that is what you like to use, enjoy it. It really does take a lot of the sting away from enemies though. If I remember right, I started playing at .11 or .12 My first win was after the .13 tourney with a SpEn, quickly followed by some gargoyles later on. It definitely takes time to learn, and don't feel bad about not ascending for months or even years.

Faulty engines are new in the development branch. The engine itself is at 100% health, but is labeled as faulty, which according to the source code means there's something wrong with the drive belt, spark plug, etc. Since the thing has 0 damage, I can't highlight it with repair, but I can't find any other way to view what exactly is wrong with it. There's a giant wasp nearby, which I've never seen before, and I'm hoping they're the same way. If so, I might camp out here for a couple of days, read up on some basic skills, and maybe train my swing on some ants. After that, scotch.

I'm not sure exactly what energyscumming means (I thought it was pillar dancing a dangerous enemy until you create a gap between the two of you allowing you to escape), but there's that ogre trick you mentioned where you let him swing his slow club, which takes more than 1 turn, allowing you to consistently create a gap by walking away and allowing you to flee upstairs. There's also another trick where you shadowbox (punch the air), which takes less than 1 turn, just before an enemy gets next to you, giving you a slight turn advantage when you begin fisticuffs.

I'm inclined to agree that he would have eventually picked up some magic due to having nowhere else profitable to invest. But the thing is, even though these low cost/high impact spells are good, he never missed them all that much. Regeneration is really good, but when you're firing +8 GSC's out of your +9 triple railgun to end popcorn in one or two turns, you don't lose much HP except in big encounters. You'd want to blink to run away from those, except you also have literal endless teleports from consumables. You want haste, but you probably have a wand. All the bigger spells that are really strong cost a lot of investment for something that you don't necessarily need. The character had more to gain from going TSO for holy triple xbow. The ONLY spell that would have made that character absolutely better was portal projectile. Now that penetration is artifact only, I'd say that the build wouldn't work in postend without portal projectile. Or maybe even not at all.

I think one of the reasons we still talk about crawl might be because of the tournaments. Other than the fact that three and a half years ago this place was literally built for discussing dcss and thus it has always remained a background topic, despite how the regulars stopped playing it and it's mostly new guys trying the new versions and some diehards that keep playing because they like it, the tourneys inject a large amount of dcss in /rlg/'s bloodstream which keeps it running faster and jump higher for a while, then the new guys look at dcss and see people playing it do they play it too and thus the cycle continues.
The fact that there is a tourney each year ensures that there will be not a single thread without dcss posts, no matter what.

For earlygame in DCSS, ring mail provides the best combination of AC/EV that you can find, among the base body armour types.

Comparisons between things like scale mail and leather don't matter too much. Pickup and use whichever you find that provides the best overall combination of defenses until you find some ring mail, and then use that until you find or create some dragon armour. MDA used to be the best in older versions, Swamp DA is often the most helpful in current versions.


If your combo has lots of strength and a good armour aptitude, then you can choose something heavier if you want to, but always remember that EV is generally more valuable than AC point for point.

There's a couple ways to deal with this:
*your pet will try to avoid walking over cursed items, and if he has to he will move "only reluctantly". so if your pet walks over or picks up an item you know it isn't cursed
*if you find a holy altar (even if it isn't for your god), dropping items on it will identify whether they're blessed, uncursed, or cursed.

ID scrolls are sort of uncommon and you'll end up identifying a lot of gear (especially wands) by testing it out manually

I don't think there are a lot of sources of arrows. If you want ranged options that don't run out, play a rogue (whose throwing daggers will never break) or a wizard (who can eventually kill everything with spells)

The good thing about Cata is that if you don't like starting off not knowing how to make jack shit, you can adjust settings to give yourself more starting points to work with. They even have a system in place for you to seperate points into three seperate pools, one for traits, one for stats, and one for skills(at least, I think this is how it's divided). I like that you can divide the pools like that so that way you actually use them for skills instead of changing your mind halfway through character creation and go "oh I'll just read to get those skills" and then dumping those extra points into INT or something instead.

Well, you can learn a lot of info that lives in spoilers by paying the Oracle for true rumors (or finding rumors around the dungeon and correctly guessing which are true and which false). We had an anon a month or two ago who did a vanilla win in this way, without spoilers. Finding out some cute interactions in nethack by oneself can be very fun. Still, not many people will give you shit for reading spoilers for it if you prefer.

Most non-melee characters end up using a ring mail before upgrading to some sort of dragon armor eventually. For melee characters a ring mail gives the most balanced defenses, so they're a viable choice until you have the training/stats to use something heavier without nuking your EV (which is much worse than nuking your AC)

Also, you want FDA rather than plate. It's not quite as tough but gives rF++ and it's much less cumbersome. Then there's GDA and crystal plate but those nuke your EV unless you have size bonuses (on the case of crystal plate those are exclusive to Nagas and Formicids) or a ridiculous amount of training in Armor (like if you were doing post-end and had a virtually unlimited amount of XP at your disposal)

You counter banishment in a Berserker by either not fighting things capable of banishing you or using Trog's Hand to get extra MR before doing so

The average apt in most skills is -1, not 0. Nagas have pretty good apts across the board, and their -2 to armor becomes less relevant when you realize they get free AC and size bonuses against armor encumbrance. The only bad one is -2 dodging, and you have to train that regardless.

Nagas are better as hybrid characters because they can gain Chei piety obscenely fast, and their Slouch is one of the strongest attacks in the game. You just have to be very careful. A good one is a NaTm

- Velocity will always apply an overall-positive effect (with allies present).
- Banshee now drains victims, in addition to causing fear.
- Solitude can now cause Disjunction at high power.
* Wild Magic now affects enemies instead of the player, and restores magic for
each enemy so affected. It has moved from the Deck of Punishment to the Deck
of Wonders.
* Dowsing is no longer in the deck of battle.
* Decks of war have lost their set of destruction cards.
* The Cloud card has moved from decks of destruction to decks of emergency.
* Removed cards: Metamorphosis, Herd, Bones.

- 5*: Apocalypse: Deals very high damage to all monsters in LOS and inflicts

* All gods now treat followers' kills the same as the player's, for purposes of
piety gain.
* Makhleb and Okawaru no longer support corpse sacrifice.
* Dithmenos now specifically hates fire; Corona and related effects are now
permitted to Dithmenos's worshippers.
* Nemelex Xobeh:
- Draw One and Peek at Two are no more.
- Cards have been changed thoroughly over once more.
- Nemelex now grants destruction decks again.
* While following TSO, enemies will no longer be distracted by your allies.
* TSO's Divine Shield no longer benefits from Shields skill.
* Zin:
- Hell effect protection halved; now capping out at 50%, down from 100%.

Where the fuck are the PosChengband tilesets? I'm searching all over Google and nothing is coming up. When I try to enable tiles it gives me the "You may not do that right now" and tells me it can't execute the files because they don't even exist in the first place. You can do that in ADoM, but you do have to advance the game at least slowly so you win before background corruption gets too bad. That takes a long time though. After that it becomes a sandbox.
