I didn't particularly like that and I think it kills part of the roleplaying experience to do that.

You have a modicum of control already by being able to direct their powers and everything and I think that fits with the theme of being a commander.

This is one mechanic I did not miss. If it was improved somehow, like streamlining the skills so that, a la Dragon Age where the rogue characters for instance would just have to level up lockpicking.

Never played Dragon Age, actually. So I imagine you're making a comparison I didn't really intend.


Mass Effect in a sense already has an element of turn-based combat to it, what with pausing the game to select powers. I think a fully turn-based system would have been fine form the start. It would also have left much less opportunity for the game to devolve into a pure action shooter.

By its very nature a turn-based system would keep out the CoD crowd, or rather any incentive to try and rope them in. Keeping the game more focused on dialogue and roleplaying.

Me personally, I like to micromanage.
Nothing irks me more than being in the heat of battle and having to wait for my AI to recharge their overload or something because they used it on a guy who had ~10% of shield left when I could have used it on a more high-priority target.

I think the problem with the combat in ME1 was two things

1.) No feedback

Enemies didn't react physically to taking damage or being killed. They just went from acting normal to a ragdoll when they died. Something ME2 really improved on was enemy animations when they died or took damage or were stunned. It made combat more satisfying.

2.) The defensive abilities were too powerful

Once you powered up immunity or the barrier abilities you were effectively invincible. As such you'd just run around without even needing cover (and the enemy wouldn't either), which just made combat chaotic and silly.


So again in that sense ME2 did it better by making cover more essential. In fact, this even fit the lore better as in the books shields and barriers are good for deflecting an attack, briefly, so that you can get behind cover. Else they go down very quickly and you wind up getting splattered.


I just wish ME2 hadn't made its combat so segregated from everything else. Two things I miss from ME1's combat are:

1.) It could happen anywhere totally unexpected. Literally in the same place you regularly do shopping you could get into a shoot-out on a quest. You could get ambushed in other areas. The game was able to surprise you every now and then with this.

2.) The scale. In ME1 you have some really big open battlefields with heavy turrets and snipers. I miss stuff like that. Real battlefields.

I'd have loved to see the series expand on that rather than cut it. I liked that rachni mission for instance where you have to defend the outpost on this big open map. So much more could have been done with that.

I'm playing ME3 for the first time since release and I never managed to figure out war assets very well.

Where do most of them come from? My first playthrough I remember doing almost every single side quest in the game but I didn't have 100% search and rescue and I didn't even get close to the best ending so obviously I missed something, however doing search and rescue looks like this also doesnt give that many war assets.
