I'm not sure if you're trying to be sarcastic, but I'm talking about how deep the conversations go, mainly.

ME2 and 3 had more ambient, spontaneous, and flyby dialog, and used what it had to good effect most of the time, but otherwise there's simply less (optional) exposition overall.

Perhaps it was for the better since it can get boring to just stand there jawing for 5 minutes, and maybe it wasn't even that necessary since the setting was already established.

Clear screens make sense if they can become translucent or opaque on command. If they're off, they're as attractive as a window, and if they're on you can use them.

As for them still being clear while operating, that's cinematic shorthand for fancy holograms, a halfway between floating color panels and standard displays. PADD-type devices exist wherever using paper might be seen as not futuristic enough. The failing is usually in people using them like paper (i.e. handing pads around like they were forms) and not like actual devices.

Another weird point is where all the above display technologies exist already in Mass Effect. You've got floating holopanels and omni-tools that just manifest anything you want above your hand, so you wouldn't need a piece of glass/plastic that rolls text.

This started in ME2, really. In ME1 Cerberus was as obscure as Section 31 in Star Trek. By ME2 they're basically famous. By ME3 they're a magical super organization that can pull fleets out of its ass and go to war with multiple galactic powers simultaneously, using "Reaper Tech" as some kind of magic wand to excuse all inconsistency.

If I had my way Cerberus would only "go public" in ME3. TIM would've mastered some form of indoctrination and used it on a portion of alliance leaders, then attempt to secede as the reapers arrived, claiming that since cerberus was fighting the reaper threat since ME2 with shepard only they were qualified to defend humanity against it. Well-meaning people that weren't indoctrinated would side with cerberus out of distrust for the alliance leadership that attempted to disavow shep.

The alliance would then fracture into civil war, which would explain why cerberus has all those fleets, and why Shep would need so much alien help. The aliens would be reluctant to side with a human "internal affair" in addition to their own reaper issues.

I think what I'd do for ME3 is after the Reapers gain control of Earth they indoctrinate much of the leadership and population. They then have them broadcast to the rest of the Alliance that they should stand down and assist the Reapers. Humans and Reapers are allies. They could even drop in some bits of truth to make some people capitulate. Such as the fact that Reapers do seem to consider humans more worthy than the other races of being "uplifted".

Considering Shepard's trial was on Earth it seems that a good portion of the Alliance leadership is stationed there. So if enough of them were captured they could be giving out orders to the rest of the Alliance that would technically be legitimate. This would fracture and it some might actually obey.

I think a nice moment that could have been in ME3 is Shepard calling in for reinforcements. He sees a stealth frigate fly overhead and N7 marines drop down... then they open fire on his squad.


Really though, if I were gonna rewrite the series I'd have to start at the beginning.

Most of Alliance leadership was on Arcturus station, which was hit in the first attack on Earth. In ME3 udina mentions being the most powerful human in history after the alliance parliament got blown up.

There are ambient details in ME3 where the reapers were broadcasting negotiation offers for earth leaders (presumably the nation-state leaders), followed by more details about leaders using military force against the civilian population "to prevent loose cannons from provoking the reapers", with Allers and the resistance suspecting those leaders are indoctrinated.

That stuff flies in the face of everything we're actually shown about the reapers, so it doesn't ring true in the actual context of ME3, but it would ring truer under the background of a cerberus-led civil war. A fractured government on earth would be trying anything to survive, including appeasement, and we already know TIM's ultimate goal was Control, which would mean that Cerberus-led forces wouldn't necessarily be out for absolute resistance against the reapers, and would be attempting to do things like hinder attempts to build the crucible in addition to out-and-out fighting tha liance military.

A thought about ME3 and Cerberus.

Everything in ME2 and Mass Effect: Retribution set them up to have a smaller role in ME3. Not a bigger one.

In ME2 we are repeatedly told, including from classified Cerberus files we weren't intended to see, that Cerberus had sunk most of its money and resources into Shepard and the SR2. On top of that we saw projects like Overlord and the derelict Reaper which had numbers of personnel in the hundreds and suffered nigh total losses. Then in Retribution the turians attack several Cerberus facilities, killing all the personnel, and they also arrest a large number of Cerberus' spies in the Alliance and in the private sector.


It's pretty stupid and clumsy in terms of writing then that in ME3 none of this seems to play any role. Cerberus has a competently large fleet and support staff to build an army and wage war on the galaxy. All of this in only a few months.


Going into ME3, before the leak anyway, I assumed that in ME3 our interaction with them would be limited. That their main role in the story was completed with 2. I figured we'd call up TIM at the start and if we saved the base he might give us a free upgrade or something, but that otherwise he'd be all like:

Mm, I never played it. However I've always wondered about the ambient stuff. Sometimes it's the most interesting and builds the world a lot, but is often overlooked.

A long time ago I had an idea similar to your Alliance Civil War concept. Only it was for an alternate "anthology" Mass Effect series. One in which each game was a self-contained story about one of the first human Spectre's missions.

In I think the third or fourth game, I had the idea that the Cerberus group would be uncovered. They'd have reactivated the Klendagon Gun and use it to hold the galaxy hostage, eliminate human rivals, and allow a coup of supporters overthrow the Alliance leadership.

At that point Shepard would find himself being hunted down human and alien forces alike, whilst trying to free the galaxy from Cerberus' clutches but at the same time prevent a violent alien retaliation that could cripple humanity for generations.

Back in the ME1 days some folks who thought they were clever asked why the aliens all spoke English. A sane and rational person understands that this is merely an artistic indulgence to aid in story telling as devising alien biology is hard enough without having to come up with a fictional language and then add in sub-titles.

However... people just couldn't leave well enough alone. So now everybody has an INSTANTANEOUS universal translator in their omni-tool or some shit that not only converts speech AS IT IS SPOKEN INSTANTLY but also completely mutes the original actual voice and words and replaces it with the translation AND it also, somehow, makes sure the entity is properly lip-synced as though they were speaking English.

True, but Biotics is Space Magic, so precedent carries no weight. After all, Vangos couldn't charge in ME1.

Anyway, the flavor text for Charge says they phase through solid objects, so that's what they're doing. Gameplaywise, a vanguard can't charge an enemy that's behind cover, so maybe lore-wise there's a limit on how much they can phase, so it's not full on Kitty Pryde mutant powers.

That aside, all biotics are basically capable of the same, it's just a matter of training, talent, and the quality of their amps. Crazies like Jack, Samara, and top Asari biotics can do all kinds of crazy cutscene-level shit, while scrubs like Kaidan or pre-ME2 shepard have to content themselves with occasionally being able to warp or pull

I will admit that in ME1 Meer had some really terrible lines that were just totally flat. However in ME2 he'd improved tremendously and was pretty fantastic, especially as a Renegade.

That works more logically, but it's weaker thematically and less satisfying dramatically. Bioware clearly wanted a more dramatic ending and they got it in ME3, but even all of that couldn't undo the damage ME2 did to the overall story.

See, even in ME1 they were pushing the idea of synthetic/organic conflict being at the root of the reaper cycle, via the convos with sovereign, with the larger background theme to that being the importance of multiculturalism and diversity (along with the peacemaking and diplomacy critical to maintaining both) being the key to surviving the cycle.

Unfortunately, ME2's diversion with cerberus, TIM and the collectors, and the general tonal shift of the whole thing with Paragon/Renegade becoming so much more binary (ME1 was more Jade Empire while ME2 was more KOTOR in the way moralities were differentiated) put big cracks in how that story would unfold. From there it became a Bioware-standard "unite the races, beat the evil" story with all the awesome-button subtlety of Dragon Age 2 marketing.

The themes of Synthetic/organic conflict and cyclical history were pushed to the background by the Cerberus cheerleading, and even in ME3 they couldn't help it. There are so many moments in ME3 that would've worked better or just made so much more sense of the reapers were the enemy rather than cerberus.
