It's all going to be okay, anon. You're going to finish your game and you'll find out all the pain and suffering was worth it in the end.

It's alright. I knew all along that this was going to tear me down. I knew I'd never make it, like everyone else here. There's no hope of achieving our goals, since we aren't the lucky ones. The lucky ones always achieve their goals. We're just the rabble. The group of nothings who will never amount to anything.

April fools. We're all going to make it, and nothing can stop us. Not even Cthulhu.

>>
>>137218130
The thing is they aren't ten month olds, they're drawings. Heavily stylized ones at that. No matter how extreme or grotesque a drawing might be, it's still just a drawing.
If westerners had any sort of consistency in their reasoning then violence and gore in the media would be just as taboo, but instead it's viewed as normal entertainment. People love watching others beat the shit out of each other, get blown up, or die in horribly gruesome or comical ways, many of which can still be considered pg-13. But you expose a single tit and that's it and it almost guarantees it'll be rated R.

Well Carlton, as someone who has never played a TyranoBuilder made game without experiencing at least 1 game breaking bug, I would recommend you switch. I tried to like it too, I really did. I even purchased it on Steam. Maybe come back to it after 2 years of updates. Ren'Py has been around for a loooooong time with constant updates and bug fixes.

No. These threads are nothing but people bumping day in and day out. There's zero reason for this thread to exist. I don't know the history of why /evn/ was created, but it's silly. There is no community for this thread. It's the same couple of people bumping again and again. Let's do the smart thing and move in with our /vn/ brethren. They'll accept us as brothers and sisters in arms.
>>
>>137256769
/vn/ steals people's food and leaves dirty underwear lying around
>>
>>137256769
You can go ahead and do it on your own to have your posts smothered by people talking about Japanese VNs, but I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one who'd rather have a slow general than that.

There's literally nothing smart about expecting a general of fans to offer good insight on development.
>>
>>137256769
We could just let it die for a few months again like we did a year or two ago.
>>
>>137257049

>>
>>137257342
>all feedback is valid, objective and relevant to one's market base
Don't leave your day job to open any sort of business, for your own sake.
>>
>>137257524
You're missing the point. I'm saying getting opinions and feedback is more important than getting no opinions and feedback. There's an old business saying,

>All feedback is good feedback

Perhaps you should not open any sort of business. I have a feeling you'd fare badly.
>>
>>137257748
Only we do get feedback here, from people who deal with the same issues as we do and often with the same people. It's not a fast general because there is obviously a smaller number of developers than there is of consumers, thank God.

If you want to shill there to people who will most likely never pay for a western title, be my guest. Just don't try to dilute us when this works for the developers here.

Also, I own my business. That saying just means you don't shut down a client to their face because you want repeat business, not that you take everyone's input as the same. It's the same as "the client is always right". They're not, more often than not they're oblivious to the business end of the equation; you just don't say it to their faces.
>>
>>137258092
>Also, I own my business.

>>
>>137258240
I'm fine with that, Stacy, new memes are always a good thing.
>>
>>137256769
The speed of the thread is fine, we're all supposed to be working on our projects anyway. If the threads became too lively, that wouldn't happen as often.
>>
>>137259441
That's like saying, we should just delete the thread and not come back so we have more time to work on our projects.

>>137258092
>If you want to shill there to people who will most likely never pay for a western title, be my guest.

Because people who play JVNs are completely alien to the concept of what EVNs are, right? Their opinions only related to JVNs? You make it sound like their opinions aren't valid because they aren't EVN devs, which is absolutely terrible logic. Also, what kind of business do you own? Let me guess, ebay store or commission artist.
>>
>>137260004
>Because people who play JVNs are completely alien to the concept of what EVNs are, right?
If you don't think that's the case for the majority of the weebs playing JVNs, you're completely unaware of why we felt we needed a separate thread in the first place.
>>
>>137260004
>That's like saying, we should just delete the thread and not come back so we have more time to work on our projects.

It's like saying what I said, not something entirely different. You can go hang out in /vn/, nothing is stopping you.
>>
>>137260143
>weebs
So basically someone wanted to be an elitist and create a cool kids club, even though there aren't enough people to support such a general? Alright, I'm starting to understand now.
>>
>>137260450
I'll probably just go hang out on the lemmasoft forums. I made probably a third of all the posts in the last couple of threads, minus the arguments, so you'll get plenty of time to work on your game when I'm gone.
>>

>>
>>137261059
You asked a community to disband and join another community and expected nobody to oppose it?
>>
>>137261348
It's the same community. /vn/ and /evn/ are the same kinds of people. We all enjoy visual novels. There's no need to be separate, and the only ones who are being hurt by it is /evn/ because of our lack of population. These threads are stagnant. There's no new growth, nothing interesting, no proper discussion. We need to liven it up, and the only way you can do that is with more people.
>>
I've found there is someone almost always someone here to answer a development related question, for people like myself who hate forums, this is a nice place and I'd be sad to see it disintegrate into /vn/.
>>
>>137261778
/evn/ will not survive in /vn/. Any questions will be buried and never seen, I don't have enough time to skim through threads, and I'm sure most of you don't either. It's either we exist as /evn/, or we disappear.

Is this the kind of posters you want to associate yourself with? All these people do is bump posts, call each other names, and proclaim that they are the elites of the visual novel world, and that 'weebs' are below them. Yet they are all weeaboos! Have you seen what happens when someone tries to change up the meta? Someone posts a picture of a character with LIPS. A trait commonly used in western and french artwork, but rarely used in Japan. What happens? The thread goes nuts for an entire 2 days about how terrible looks are on characters. All I see is a bunch of 'weebs' in denial. This is unacceptable. Absolutely unacceptable. VN accepts your invitation and welcomes you with open arms. Even offers to change the stupid rule at the bottom that states VNs must be Japanese in nature. They reached out to you with kindness. Yet you bite their hand and call them names. This is the kind of people you want to associate with? I pity you.

So, did the Backstage Pass devs spend all their money on the animated intro? The backgrounds all look like what I'd expect from a free VN or something that costs $5, not $30. A fair few of the CGs are wonky and lazily done, with characters superimposed on a blurred out version of the current background. The music is repetitive and more often than not out of place.

The worst thing is that the story is so incredibly bland, though. At times I was wondering whether whoever wrote it is a robot or something. In the route I've seen so far there's the cringiest love confession I've ever seen in any medium, it's so awkward it reads like some kind of business proposal. The protagonist is all over the place with her behaviour, so much so she ends up having no personality at all; the bit about her having social anxiety seems to be put in just so the writer could tick off their Tumblr box in the feature list. It's just not used for the story, it's there to say "There, we have someone who's in some way mentally disabled! Except for more or less anywhere in the story after we introduce her problem, because that would not allow us to make her assertive and independent!"

What the fuck was the writer thinking??? What am I reading? Why is there so much grinding and so little story? Why did I trust the goddamn Steam reviews?

The game charges for all 3 chapters upfront, which is why it's $15. I'm betting people are waiting for the conclusion to come out before buying it. They should have a sale for it when it's complete.
>>
Looks like there's a new initiative on Steam for visual novels. Any indie developed visual novel that is successfully greenlit and put up for sale or early access gets $10,000 in cash and a free shout out from Valve. This could be huge.

Furries are just whatever. I've been numb to people's weird-ass fetishes on the Internet for years.

I dunno, could YOU make a derivative work and have 11,000 pay attention to it (and thousands more see it)? Serious question. I don't think I could. It requires some degree of quality to get noticed. A ton of people would be interested in a Zootopia VN, as anon mentioned, but if I just shat out some awful garbage nobody would give it a second glance and it wouldn't get spread for shit. Even if they leeched somewhat off an existing fanbase, doing so successfully is still notable.

>>
>>137309595
So you don't have to make something quality for a bunch of people to look at it. You just have to make something based off something popular, and LiS is quite popular on tumblr.

I'm not saying the game is bad because I haven't played it, but an original game getting 11000 views is completely different from a fan game based on something that's got a huge fanbase already doing so.
>>
>>137308318
Your posts speak for themselves broski.
Honestly though, with a Zootopia VN where Disney is completely out of the picture you either cater to children, or you cater to furries. Seeing as how preteens aren't really in the market for visual novels, furries are your only real audience. Good luck trying to get anyone else.

It's almost like visual novels can be more than dating sims or something.

Faye crushed on Lenna but was shot down, Lenna broke up with Sol instead during the former terrible scene, and Kika is being a tsundere. Based on what's been leaked and how the story is shaping up, there's going to be romantic ends with each of the girls in the final part.
>>
>>137310889
I still find it amusing that you haven't realized that I never once said I hated furries and that you somehow believe I care about what you fap to.
>Oh do tell me more. So interesting.
Do I really need to point out all the ad hominems?

I'm not saying people can't like anthropomorphic characters non-sexually. I'm saying that any Zootopia project that's completely unrelated to Disney is not going to have anywhere near the same appeal to those who aren't into furry, especially if it's a VN where sex is a pretty normal thing for the medium.
>>
>>137312038
>especially if it's a VN where sex is a pretty normal thing for the medium.

Woah, woah what? You were thinking about a sex novel? No one said anything about sex.

Non-furries fap to furry porn all the time. Consider yourself educated.
>>
>>137311863
>It's almost like visual novels can be more than dating sims or something.
No, it's almost like this game has a seriously bad reputation because of what happened in the past and I'm trying to get some conclusive proof of romantic encounters so that I can sell /u/ on it, which is basically refusing to buy the game until it is PROVED that your girlfriend isn't going to dump you for a man.
>>
>>137312596
We've had several people on /evn/ who've played it say that it doesn't happen. There's CGs revealed showing it doesn't happen. The writer has made public statements several times that it doesn't happen.

/u/ just wants to hate on it. I say let them and let another yuri game go down the drain.
>>
>>137312829
>There's CGs revealed showing it doesn't happen.
Technically, you can't have a CG proving that a thing doesn't happen, a CG could only prove what does happen.
>>
>>137312596
I doubt you'll be able to convince them, try again when it's completely finished if you really want to.
>>
>>137312265
I didn't say it had to be. I was trying to say that people would probably expect that to be the case. Sex is very common for VNs and without it I don't think even all that many furries would be interested as I'm sure that's what they would be hoping for. Besides, with the way you keep going on about fapping to furry, I assume you feel the same way.

So what makes someone a furry if merely being interested in the porn isn't enough of a qualifier?
>>
>>137313131
First of all, are you seriously arguing that a Zootopia VN wouldn't sell like hotcakes? That's a really silly argument considering how popular it is, and how much fanfiction is being made. People would eat that shit up. Even if you assume that only furries buy or support it, which wouldn't be the case, you still have a huge audience.

What makes a furry. Furry conventions, fursonas, animal spirit bullshit, being part of a furry community, etc. Liking furry porn doesn't make you any more of a furry than liking rape novels makes you a rapist.
>>
>>137313645
>Disney IP VN
>selling
That's a good one.
But look back at the whole reason this chain started. My point was that only furries would want it. And without porn that would just hurt it even more. Nobody would give a shit about a Zootopia VN made by some random blokes nobody knows about if they think all they have to do is coast off the success of the movie.

None of the furries I know care about and actively mock fursonas and all that shit, but they love the porn more than regular stuff and consider themselves furry as a result. You don't have to revolve a chunk of your life around something in order to have a label apply to you. Labels all have different criteria and don't all need to meet the same universal standards. As a similar example, it's like saying you're not a lolicon unless you go to conventions or dress up as a little girl.
>>
>>137316017
Not really. That's not true at all. Lolicon is someone who likes young girls. Furry is not someone who likes furry porn. Furry is a lifestyle. You can enjoy furry porn and not be a furry. It's more like saying people who like lolicon are sexual predators, or people who like traps are gay in real life.

>Disney IP VN
Yeah, no shit, but that's not the topic of discussion.

>Only furries would want it
Yeah, like only furries watched Zootopia am I rite.

>>137316985
>Furry is not someone who likes furry porn.
They're someone who is sexually attracted to anthropomorphic characters. I fail to see how that's different from any other sexual inclination regardless of how you choose to act on it. If you are sexually attracted to anthropomorphic characters you are a furry. It doesn't matter if you're also attracted to humans. That said, there is a good deal of leeway over just how furry you can be given the range and diversity.

>but that's not the topic of discussion
It is if you're trying to argue that it would sell well.
>are you seriously arguing that a Zootopia VN wouldn't sell like hotcakes?

>Yeah, like only furries watched Zootopia am I rite
Finding such characters cute or charming is very different from being sexually attracted to them. There's a huge gulf between a massive studio like Disney, who's aiming a child friendly movie at kids and parents, compared to a parody VN, where the medium is rife with sexual content and has a niche audience, created by random anons on the internet. Nobody is arguing it can't do well, but you're delusional if you think any non-furries would care about it just because of its name. We all know it would make bank if it was even remotely decent and had loads of porn. If it doesn't? Good luck.
>>
>>137319345
It was troll art, like I said. It was made to be super over the top and get an emotional response from people. Trolling is exactly what it was, and trolling can be a joke.

>>
>>137319728
The japs don't care about shit like that. It was a an over the top joke about her ten year anniversary.
>>
>>137319696
>If you are sexually attracted to anthropomorphic characters you are a furry.
Again. This is blatantly false. Someone faps to MLP rule34, that does not make them a Brony. A brony is part of the MLP community, just like a Furry is part of the furry community. Fapping to something does not automatically associate you with a certain ideology or lifestyle.

>Finding such characters cute or charming is very different from being sexually attracted to them.

There are many more non-sexual VNs than sexual VNs fyi. I don't know why you're so stuck on this. Who wouldn't want to play a game with such charming characters? Exactly.

>if it was even remotely decent and had loads of porn. If it doesn't? Good luck.

That's literally every VN, ever. Only they have less of a chance of making it because they have nothing popular to associate with.

>>

>>

Bronies are very different. Brony is a method of conduct. Someone who only faps to ponies is merely a furry.
My point is that being a furry doesn't automatically associate you with any ideology or lifestyle. It's a sexual attraction, pure and simple.

>There are many more non-sexual VNs than sexual VNs fyi
And how well do they do compared to the ones with sexual content? All the most successful EVNs that people actually know of and care about outside /evn/ are pornographic.

>Who wouldn't want to play a game with such charming characters?
You're making a lot of assumptions about the level of competence of whoever would make this. Even if the devs are competent, you're assuming they'd able to capture any of the charm and quality of Disney, especially without any of the animations that really bring the characters to life. Porn is the greatest, and only unique leverage you have as it'd be copying everything else. And you know it would be the easiest way to attract the most people.

>Only they have less of a chance of making it because they have nothing popular to associate with.
Not necessarily. It's much more important that people know and respect the actual developers. A new game from a well liked dev has a far better chance than a parody VN from some nobodies.

are your characters all stood on stools or are they floating in the air?
>>
>>137350650
The latter, unfortunately. We don't have a BG artist of our own so we're at the mercy of DLSite's selection.

Do you think it's particularly that bad or immersion-breaking, or is it something you could generally overlook?
>>
>>137352250
Well, just eyeballing it it looks like the BG is drawn in such a way that you'd have perspective issues regardless unless you were to draw the sprites specifically for the background... From the perspective of a player, it's probably something i'd not pay much attention to. I mean, I didn't really clock on to the perspective stuff in Umineko until I saw images on twitter pointing it out months later, so meh. Some people will notice it, some won't.
>>
>>137352250
I think it's something that could be solved fairly easy, either by moving the sprites down, enlarging the BG (do they just come in a standard 1280 x 720 size on dlsite?) so it can be positioned more naturally, or a combination of the two.

And it depends entirely on how someone is viewing the background, whether or not they see it as a vague representation of where the characters are, or as a physical space behind them where their bodies have to match up. I've seen professional VNs use the former style, so it isn't too immersion breaking in the grand scheme of things.
>>
>>137352568
>>137352692
Thanks for the feedback. Yeah, I think that we could ameliorate it a little by playing with the full resolution (which is a modest 1920x1080) or simply by repositioning when they're appearing on problematic backgrounds. I'll give that a shot when I'm back on my PC tonight.

>My point is that being a furry doesn't automatically associate you with any ideology or lifestyle. It's a sexual attraction, pure and simple

That point is wrong. For instance, I fap to furry on occasion, yet I am not a furry. I don't even associate with furries. All your doing is incorrectly labeling people who fap to a certain kind of porn. Furry IS a lifestyle, just like Brony is a lifestyle. Sexual attraction has little to do with it. You don't just fap to a picture of an anthro character and suddenly you're furry. It doesn't work like that, and that's the stupidest shit I've heard someone here say in a long time.

>All the most successful EVNs that people actually know of and care about outside /evn/ are pornographic.
Because the EVN scene is still young. So they have to stand out. How stupid are you not to realize this?

>You're making a lot of assumptions
This entire point is bullshit and not worth commenting on. Also, you're the KING of assumptions, so don't talk about assumptions like you yourself are not loaded with them.

>A new game from a well liked dev has a far better chance than a parody VN from some nobodies.
That's true, but it isn't black and white. Many different factors go into it. I think that's your problem, you see everything in black and white. It has to be this way, or that way, no in between. If they fap to a furry pic they are furry, there is no grey area. Etc. No wonder discussing with you is so hard. You're blissfully ignorant and you don't have a decent viewpoint on anything other than 'what you think you know' and 'what cannot be'.

I really just want .mtn (or was it cmox) or whatever L2D has to be used directly in Ren'Py, not going about this method of:
>exporting to .gif
>converting from .gif to .webm via ffmpeg
>extracting masks

Not to mention the parameters/controls in movie() is kinda lacking.

Really though, you can do Live2D, and quite a few games have Live2D in them. It looks really awesome, and it's the reason I bought TyranoBuilder.

For actually making a VN though, unless you just want the most basic of basic VN, you might want to wait a couple of years to try it out. When it has some bug fixes and quality of life changes done to it.

The thing that breaks my soul is how Japan has about 4 really good VN builders, and all of them have Live2D support. All the new ones that come out are created with Live2D support in mind. Yet, in the good old west, we only have Live2D support with the buggy TyranoBuilder. Our best VN option Ren'Py doesn't support it, and it's questionable whether it ever will or not. It's normal for Japan to be ahead of us in the VN area, since they love VNs and have much more experience and visibility there than we have in the west. But we have the Internet! We know what kinds of things are awesome, and what's going on even in Japan. There's no reason we should have to lag behind like this.

Anyone else find it really difficult to plan out a story as opposed to just writing?
I mean, beyond having a somewhat fleshed out idea of where you want things to go and how you want the characters to develop. If I try to strictly plan out the sequence of events I have a hard time deciding what should happen and when I do get to writing it never turns out the way I was planning.
I get a lot more mileage figuring out the basics and then just letting the characters loose and seeing how they behave.
What about you guys?

Akabur makes 10 grand a month on his patreon. The Re:maid devs make 17 grand a month to make shitty newgrounds VNs.
Unteralterbach was free, but considering the reception and how I still see people talk about it elsewhere and have heared people unironically claim it as the best or highest quality EVN it's undoubtedly successful. On the flip side, I never see anyone outside of /evn/ talk about any other EVNs, not even the Sakura series, let alone things like Sunrider, Cinders, or SC2VN.
What PG VNs am I unaware of that stand up to any of those?
>>
>>137429985

I've seen Cinders discussed in "serious" game sites, most likely people that like it are not aware that vns are a thing. SC2VN is rarer, but some e-sport fans like it.

>>
>>137431438
But its continued popularity outside of 4chan and the reason it got so big wasn't the sex scenes. It was about "the feels" and also the novelty of something from 4chan that sounds offensive being so good.
>>
>>137427210
Alienworks dev here. Raith didn't steal the team from anyone. Raith doesn't even team lead, though he does have more of a presence than the rest of us.

What happened was what happened with all young teams, especially young amateur ones. Our roster is pretty solid and consistent now, but people came and went. There have been times when someone has been asked to leave, yes. But as we've grown as a team (Kickstarter, commercial releases), we've had to do things we didn't necessarily want to do for the good of our projects.

Though you do seem to be bringing up one instance specifically. Is there anything in particular you'd like to bring up with us?
>>
>>137432034
That's true. But from what I saw while it was in development, the sex scenes were a very big part of the reason people wanted to play it, leading many to be disappointed in that regard when it was released. I doubt so many people would have given it a chance and it would have taken off in the same way if it wasn't enticing people with sex. Also the fact that it was free certainly helped as it made it incredibly easy for anyone even remotely curious about it to give it a chance.
Even if it doesn't qualify because the sex is damn near impossible to fap to, it's still the only exception to what I've seen thus far.
>>
>>137429985
>Akabur makes 10 grand a month on his patreon. The Re:maid devs make 17 grand a month to make shitty newgrounds VNs.

Decent money, though I can almost certainly say Winter Wolves is earning that monthly in sales and I wouldn't call any of his games the "most successful EVNs"

I've never heard UAB mentioned outside of /evn/, not even in other VN communities (which certainly talk about the Sakura series)

There are lots of games that I've seen people unironically call the highest-quality EVN ever made and I still wouldn't list them as most successful. (Frozen Essence, for example. Some people will insist to their dying breath that is the greatest story ever released in EVN.)

If you want a game with a crazy obsessive fandom, check out 7KPP which isn't even done yet. It doesn't get talked about much here because of demographics, but it's a big thing.

If you want games that got mainstream gaming coverage, look at Digital, Analogue, and Long Live The Queen.

I admit I never see people talk about Sunrider outside of the actual Sunrider forums or small EVN discussions, but the damn thing has a HUGE install count on Steam so it absolutely has to be included as one of the most successful EVNs.
>>
>>137433639
>Winter Wolves is earning that monthly in sales

>>
>>137433639

I like it and I still think the fandom is obsessive. It comes with the territory (sexless otome game where you can create your own character), though.
>>
>>137433391
>I doubt so many people would have given it a chance and it would have taken off in the same way if it wasn't enticing people with sex.
It took off because it was one of /a/'s stupid collaborative brainstorms about [insert thing here] that was being brought to life. People joked about fucking cripples but their excitement was for seeing one of their daydreams become reality. As for people who aren't on 4chan, the sex actually made them wary because the first impression is that it's just a cripple fetishizing game.
>>
>>137434431
Completely unprovable, sorry. It's an extrapolation on my part based on games whose sales figures I do know and their apparent comparative rankings.

So yes, [citation needed] is the correct reaction.

If you want to try and step through my logic, $10K a month for $20 games only requires selling 500 copies. Look at the number of games he has on sale, consider what games sell monthly and that he has enough titles to put something in the weekly sale constantly for constant promotion, and this should help suggest why I think it's pretty likely.
>>
>>137433639
>I've never heard UAB mentioned outside of /evn/, not even in other VN communities (which certainly talk about the Sakura series)

There are rough guesses but people read at different speeds and certain technical tricks in a VN may serve to adjust playtime.

If you assume average reading speed is 200-300 wpm, then 12K to 18K would map to about an hour. Of course, a lot of VN fans are faster readers than average.

Finish writing up plot synopses for three bad end routes, making sure there aren't any glaring plot holes with what I have written so far.

Also worrying that my protagonist is turning out to be a bit of a mary sue so I'm piling on negative traits and I'm not sure if that's actually going to fix it or if there even is a problem in the first place AAAH.
>>
>>137458161
Whoa there compadre slow down
>>
>>137458395
Depth is the bane of mary sues, not just piling on negative traits.
>>
>>137457350
I would've had better luck seeing it on 4chan before the mods decided to delete every thread on sight.
>>
>>137458395
Piling on negative traits alone will just make a mary sue more annoying. Especially if the traits are only there to make her look "less perfect" and not to actually inconvenience her in some way.

Mary Sue is a poor term to use for the protagonist of an original work, anyway, since one of the major factors in identifying a Sue is how much she derails the canon work she's inserted into to make it all about her.

If you avoid that term and refer to what you're actually afraid of, it can make it easier to see and address the problem.

Do you have a protagonist whom absolutely everyone loves for no reason? Solutions: provide reasons for them to love her, add characters who don't love her, make her work harder to win the love of others, make it impossible for everyone to love her at the same time

Do you have a protagonist who is always right / always wins? Make them lose at some point, the story is generally better if they have to struggle anyway.

Do you have a protagonist who is highly skilled in too many different areas and therefore feels unbelievable? It CAN happen irl, but you need to be sure you have a good backstory for it, and you need to boost the power levels of other characters to compensate. You don't want your protagonist to be in a completely different league than everyone else, or there's no challenge. Alternately, you could remove some of those skills if they're not needed, or give them to a different character.

>>
>>137462382
AJtilley is pretty hated around these parts.
>>
>>137462382
It depends on the nature of the joke, and the reason someone isn't popular.

Actually organising a hatemob to go trash AJTilley's house would be wrong. But not only is he a shitty game maker, he's either delusional or an outright con artist (look at the financial shenanigans he's pulled with all those kickstarters, and dumping games half-finished for full price, and bullying people to leave good reviews)

So making fun of him isn't quite the same as making fun of the Wild Catgirl Appears dev, who was just sort of clueless but not a scammer.

That sucks, but that's the thing about kickstarter. Any kid straight out of highschool with no clue of how anything works can make one. Most adult professionals don't even know how to run a team or manage money, and people expect some kid to be able to? I don't even blame him. He was just using the funds he got from people who placed a bet on him, and he messed up. Everyone messes up. It's possible that he does better this time if he learned anything, but would I bet on him? Nope. Do I blame him for trying? Nope. People love throwing their money at nothing these days. >first financial disaster he'd been in charge of

>>
>>137534229
The reason they had to do a kickstarter for the next episode in the first place.

Dischan made a huge fuss about how all other EVN producers were unprofessional, and they were going to Do It Right and open up visual novels to a whole new audience, blah blah blah, all the overblown talk you generally get.

And to be fair, their episode 1 did come out nicely polished.

But in the process, they paid a _large_ number of people regular salaries to make it and then released the final product for a low, low price, cheerfully assuming that it would sell at least 100K copies because it would be cheap and easy to pick up.

After reality hit them in the face, they announced that they coudln't even pay back the costs of developing the thing, so there would be no second episode.

The people who did buy the game begged them to reconsider, and eventually they agreed to try the kickstarter route.

Best girl gets revealed tomorrow.

Also, not really hearing much feedback from people aside from "m-muh sequel." Reason is we didn't want to do a retread. Also we get people want to see other characters get some attention (mostly Reva) and we have something planned to address that.
>>
>>137555334
Like 3 threads ago, which is what, a month?
>>
>>137555867
so who the fuck are you?
>>
>>137555867
Prequels are a lot harder than sequels, since if anything big happens we didn't know about before, it feels like a lame retcon, and if only the things we already know about happen, it feels boring.

A prequel is hard to get people excited about unless there's a major noodle incident in the past that they were already curious about.

As it is, it sounds much more like a retread than a sequel would, if it's about those two characters getting started.

Not writing it off or anything, but not hearing anything to get psyched for yet either.
>>
>>137556352
I get that. We're holding back on details at the moment since we don't want to spoil stuff, but the story is much different. SC2VN is essentially about Mach overcoming his/her insecurity. Bolt is a much different protagonist.

It didn't dawn on me until recently that people might not be excited to play as Bolt since he's a dickhead in the first game. I'm sure that once people play the game and they get to know him that won't be the case, but that doesn't help us at this stage lmao.

We also get less momentum based on bandwagoning something that's already popular since Brood War is basically dead in the west. But it's rich ground for fiction, so idgaf as long as we fund. The story will be better for it.

So I finally got around to reading SC2VN (great timing I know), and I was wondering what other anons thought about it. Were the SC2VN devs reasonable with their product? They raised something like $8,000 for their kickstarter, and they put out a kinetic novel that took 2.5 hours to complete. I enjoyed it (especially considering it is free), but I feel like it didn't really go through with some of the things I felt that it promised, with the main concern being depth and length.

I don't really care about the delays, because, for better or for worse, huge delays seem to be the norm for this sort of thing. At least they finished it.
>>
>>137558764
8k is nothing.
>>
>>137558764
I liked it, but I feel like they overpromised for the KS, which is a common thing for first time devs. All things considered, it was a decent product and I could see where the 8k went.
>>
>>137559007
>>137558929
That seems reasonable. I don't really have a frame of reference for how much that sort of thing costs. I guess it's natural to hype up your product as much as possible when trying to secure funding, and that's why they're asking for 35k now. I just wish it had been longer.

I'm having trouble making art for my game and I need some advice on how to proceed. I am still pretty new to art, and I am always seeing little minor improvements because of this. I try to make sprites or art for my game, and then I keep coming back to make fixes and changes. There's no end to it. How do you people deal with this? Do you just say "I'm done!" Or are you genuinely happy with your art when you put it out? I keep changing silly things from the face shape to the outfit, to the hair, etc. I can't keep working on this same character forever. I'll get no where.
>>
>>137598425
I commission people to do it.
First because I'm new to art as well, and don't trust my skill.
Second because there are some pretty decent artists out there and I can pay them to do a better job, so why not?
>>
>>137598425
Git gud with drawing characters first. You said it yourself, you're still starting out so you're constantly seeing mistakes. Focus on getting your art into a decent level first.

It's what I did and it saved me the headache of redoing the same thing a million times. Same with backgrounds.
>>
>>137590840
They said latest, not one you were born with.
>>
>>137535535
If that's the case, then the people who bought the game should've just given up. Encouraging someone who can't manage money to use crowdfunding was a terrible idea to begin with.
>>
>>137598425
Art is never finished, merely abandoned. You will always dislike your own art, if not now then certainly later. It's the nature of improvement. There will be people out there that think you should wait until you are 'good enough' but there is not a single better way of improving then just doing the thing, over and over. Accept your skill level and look forward to doing better next time because if you don't move forward there will not be a next time.
>>
>>137597819
Thinking you need that shit. Have you seen the porn that comes from NEETS in Japan? That should be all the proof you need. Most of them have never even SEEN any members of the opposite sex that aren't their own mothers. Sex is just sex. You stick your dick in the hole. Or you lick their cunt, suck a dick, rub their skin, then stick your dick in a hole. Or get a dick stuck in you. It isn't some crazy otherworldly experience that suddenly makes you an amazing writer unfortunately. Or I would be a romance and sex writing profit by now.

>>137598838
That makes me feel a little better, but I'm worried that if I post my art and it isn't perfect or above my current level people will think it looks terrible. If I put out terrible art, no one will want to play my games.
>>
How the hell do you get a following?
How? I don't get it. How do people manage to have fandoms?

>>
>>137599284
Release something that's not shit.
>>
>>137599175
There will always be people who don't like what you do, it's not always a matter of skill. Art does take time (and I mean years), if making games is more important you might benefit from teaming up with an artist instead, maybe you can even pick up some things from them.
>>
>>137599284
You could try and, you know, be nice. Being productive also helps, people like to see content.
>>
>>137599175
Honestly, maybe you should just release something that you put less of yourself in it.
You seem like the kind of person that thinks your art is a direct representation of your worth, and who believes their work is tied to themselves.
Just because your first work might be shit doesn't mean you can't evolve later and git gud.

If you are too scared because you want that game idea/art to be perfect, maybe release something less perfect now, so you can improve next time. And don't take too hard if people don't play your stuff. We all start somewhere.
>>
>>137599634
I just want the ratio of people who don't like what I do to be less than the people who like what I do. I'm not selling on steam, but in steam review terms, I don't want mixed review status, or mostly negative status, I want positive status. Even if it's only one person who pushes it into positive.
>>
>>137599284
Come on, awkward and desperate teenage tumblr users aren't all there is

>remembers that Seduce Me has a huge fandom on tumblr

>>
>>137599928
Thanks, I haven't thought about it that way before. You're right though. I feel like the thing I put out is a direct representation of me and the quality that I'm able to achieve. I think a lot of this comes from my previous job where failure was absolutely not an option and could result in thousands of deaths, or worse. I'm not really sure how to get over that, but your advice seems like a step in the right direction.
>>
>>137598425
I have the exact same problem, expect on writing.
My art is pretty decent as it is, and I really wanna release a quick VN, but the writing is such a drag. I'm terrible at it, and english is not my first language. I don't have money to pay for a writer and I'm to scared to take free help because whenever I tried that, people just vanished on me sooner or later. I didn't have a good experience on relying on people working for free.

I decided I'm gonna release a VN either way. Will it be shit writing? Yes. Will I at least try to get someone to proof read? Probably. But at lease I'll finish something, goddamn it.
