That's how it used to work. Tons of people working on projects. How many Dragon Quest 5 translations were there? Nowadays, no one wants to fuck with learning assembler and just wait for someone else to do it.

It's more like, Gideon's seen as a veteran/role model and highly respected. So if you try to take a project from him, you better be able to do that thing without any support from anyone else in the community.

I'll make an argument that I make against localizers as well. Particularly the ones that think what they are doing is art which gives them the right to "fix" things that went against their opinion. This game was not a product of their own thought, and it doesn't "belong" to them. It was made by someone else and they are there to translate it in a way that respects the game and audience. It doesn't have to be dry shit, but it has to retain the soul of the game. Likewise to fan translators, they don't "own" the rights to the game. Hell, half of what they do is in a very legal grey area. So to act all high and mighty that the project "belongs" to them like they have some sort of contract is retarded and laughable.

Anyone else feel like Maniax kind of ruined the SMT timeline? Gameplay-wise it's a much needed addition to a rather bare bones game, but turning Lucifer into a KILL ALL HUMANS nutjob and introducing infinite parallel universes (as opposed to If...'s branching timeline) really fucked everything up.

I would lean less towards 'inspired by' and more towards 'plagiarized from'. Hell, even the reincarnation stuff is hinted at near the end there.

The only thing the novel really does significantly differently is the addition of Yumiko, but I'd say that's more a product of the author doing a "find-replace" on the Christian concepts in the film for various Shinto ones and thereby requiring a female counterpart to Izanagi. Oh, and also Cerberus.

That "I WILL RETURN" ending on the computer was really the last nail in that coffin. Glad the franchise transferred into new hands and was able to move into more original territory with SMT.

Playing Nocturne, I think I might have fucked up the Yurakucho tunnel mining thing to get the kimon stone so you can get one of the magatama. I gave him the most shit-tier demon I had (a preta) and then went through the tunnel, did the fifth kalpa, the diet building, spent about an hour running around the world map, came back, and he still wasn't fucking done. I read it takes 7 full phases if you give him a 21+ strength demon, and 10 if you give him one with less, but does it take even longer if you give him a really shitty demon? Did I fuck up? Is it a bug?

A bit surprised that only the two crew members in the Command Room said anything about it; and after you talk to them once they never mention it again. Can't wait to go Chaos on my next playthrough to watch Mastema's meltdown and the subsequent fight. To tell the truth, him appearing right after Zelenin's death unnerved me a bit. Thought I would have to fight him right after until I remembered that he only do so on Chaos.

I did not expect to see such refined taste here.

There are lots of little clues as to his personality too, from the iOS/GBA extra scenes to a really great interview I cannot fucking find anymore about SMT1 character development.

There's a vulnerability and quiet sadness to his character that just works so well in a game about murdering your friends. For me, betraying your friends didn't really carry the same weight in the other games as it did here either. Everyone just seems so scared and desperate to make things stop fucking up.

Playing as a superhuman clone, demon hybrid, elite soldier, or magical human never replicated the same feeling.

Pretty great stuff, does an excellent job fleshing out the more reasonable aspects of Chaos, and the Law-Chaos conflict as a whole. The only thing I'd read previously that attempts anything like this is 'Letters from the Earth' but that derailed very quickly into Twain ranting about sexuality and I dropped it.
