Is it just me or has Nintendo been REALLY lackluster the last...year or so.

I'm not talking about their shit marketing or any reduction in game quality (except that Metroid shit...who approved that), but just...it seems like a chore to play anything Nintendo, or anything on a Nintendo system? Like somehow the magic is gone, from the new and the old?

I'm playing catch-up with everything so I hardly notice and I mean...there's the massive regular DS library full of stuff I haven't played yet let alone the fact Ive got alot of stuff this gen to play through and multiplayer and yes....

But then I am someone who burns through 20+ hours on flawed games like F1 2011 on my 3DS so...

I still enjoy Nintendo stuff, I'm getting plenty of life out of the WiiU and especially the 3DS but it's been a long time since they really released a 10/10 title. In a lot of cases it really seems like they don't know what to do with some of their best franchises, which is worrying since in a lot of cases like F-Zero the answer is literally just make a fucking game.

Still, at least for the moment it's not bad enough for me to lose faith in them. I'll keep hoping they find their feet and get back on track. I'll probably always love Nintendo to some degree.

I think it's just a combination of normal, turn-based RPGs going out of style on the AAA market, and that most RPGs nowadays subvert themselves into other genres (example: shit like Borderlands) and that JRPGs in general are just hard for children, which is kind of ironic cause Sticker Star is one of the hardest Nintendo games ever if you don't play it right.

If Nintendo had power over GameFreak they'd make Pokemon suck too.

Game Freak and Pokemon have the exact opposite problem, they refuse to innovate and just keep throwing the same old thing at you time and time again. The actual aesthetics of the game only changed significantly for the first time after about 15 years. They were creating games stuck in the year 2000 for most of that.

There have been mechanic splits, natures, abilities, online multiplayer, tag battles horde battles, diagonal movement, and all kinds of tweaks.

Which excites the hardcore players but not the average person. I don't want to say just graphics but that's a big part of it, something to mix up the actual gameplay a bit, even something simple like a paper Mario style button presses, items to give you more than four moves, less grinding.

I grew disillusioned with the game by gen 3 though, Gold & Silver improved massively with types, world, time system, something for after the main game, creating pokeballs, probably more I'm forgetting. Gen 3 seemed to remove all these features of anything.

But the games still sold brilliantly and obviously I'm the odd one out here

-the towns had more personality
-the pokémon were overall better
-the legendary Pokémon had more cool things going for them (the Regi quest goddamit, figuring that out was a blast). I like the dogs and the birds but not as much.

Johto is undercooked and has horrible level curving, isn't really fun to explore, few memorable locations. and you mostly run into Kanto Pokemon, since for some reason a lot of Johto Pokemon are pushed to the late game (cause Misdreavus has to only appear in Mt. Silver right?)

Kanto itself was barren and shitty, also grass starters were not balanced at all for Johto's region, the only advantageous matchup is against Chuck's Poliwrath, and even then it's a fighting gym so Flying types are way more practical. You couldn't even grind Chikorita decently in the early game cause the pre-gym levels are from a tower that's filled with Bellsprout, Hoothoots, and Gastly.

The only exception flaw of Hoenn is that Dive locations have very little pay off for exploring and utilizing the Dive HM.

It's literally a small, and I mean SMALL, town surrounded by trees.

There's nothing interesting to it outside of being able to make Balls, and even then there's nothing exceptional about the building.

Hoenn had Slateport City with the largest beached region of any game, and a market on the port.

There's the ash pathway followed by the exceptionally dry-looking Fallabor Town, Sky Pillar, an actual desert, the boggy Mossdeep city. a downed ship you could explore (which was was later retooled in ORAS) and Shoal Cave which featured a unique tide mechanic that would change depending on the time you explored.

Oh, and there was also a religious city residing inside a fucking crater.

Because the CPU is now playing Game Boy Advance games, usually that CPU is performing background tasks like powering the wireless on or checking your friends list to notify you when they come online. While it’s being used as a Game Boy Advance – it can’t do anything else at all.

Gen 3 is my favorite, too. I loved the world; even though it wasn't 2 regions it was still a very interesting region to me. The addition of abilities and double battles was fun for me. Emerald with the Battle Frontier was the first time I was ever interested in training Pokemon for battling (mainly just try to complete the Pokedex).

Didn't bother picking up the Ruby/Sapphire remakes because they look stripped of a lot of things and lackluster, like every newer gen after 3. Or maybe I just need to realize I'm no long Game Freak's target audience and that those days are over.

I think they cover parts of Nintendo's product history they cover quite well - much of which is outside most of their traditional gaming fans knowledge (so NES and up fans). Text-wise though - the general corporate history stuff Ive already been exposed to through various magazines so I don't care but they are well presented.

I really enjoyed the first volume but I work for an Auctioneering firm and so have kind of had a little contact with collectible toys and playing cards from that era (nothing Nintendo though).

I'm playing Hyrule Warrior Legends on an old 3DS and having fun.
