Hey /ptg/

I'm normally a smash player, but got pokken because it looks incredibly fun, and I was bored.

I'm playing against the AI on normal, and while I am winning consistently, I realize I have no idea what I am doing.

I did all the tutorials, and I did the move/combo tutorials for Machamp.

I was able to get down all the combos, but the instant I get into a match I forget them and just sort of flail about. While I haven't lost to the AI, thats mainly because they don't dodge command grabs, and just attack into counters.

I understand the basics of the game and the Triangle system. I just want to know how I can actually apply any of this shit to playing.

Are there any particularly good videos to watch to help someone get into it?

I find Blaziken very difficult to play against as Weavile due to his high damaging combos and counter piercing attacks. Anyone have any tips?

I dunno much about Machamp, but I'd say you should probably turn on your brain to proper combos if you do manage to hit the right move. Go into free training and try to see combos into what regardless of the few things the combo dojo taught. Eventually it'll be muscle memory for when you're in an actual fight, so when you hit the right move you'll know automatically the combo to move into.

Anyone got an explanation of the button input notations people are using for the game? Haven't used the clock/numeric system since KOF13.

Deoxys - In both Field and Duel mode, he can use a single input (Back Y or something) to toggle through his forms (Normal > Attack > Speed > Defence > Normal). In each form, all of his other inputs result in different attacks.
Normal form focuses on zoning, mostly at midrange. Damage and defence is average.
Attack form focuses on heavy pressure, breaking through shield quickly and dealing large amounts of damage, but defence is low, so opponents can deal lots of damage back
Speed form focuses on rushdown, with moves that let him get close to the opponent very quickly and can bypass projectiles. Damage and defence are less than that of Normal form, however
Defence focuses on powering through opponent's attacks with various forms of super armor. Damage output and movement speed are low, however.
Theoretically, you'll want to switch forms depending on your distance with the opponent and how much pressure they're putting on you.

I think having two forms that compliment each other would make more sense.
Basically say Normal and Speed are semi paired so during move execution he'll shift forms.
I.e. YYY would be Normal form attack x2 and then Speed form finisher.
And then Defense and Attack pairing changing the moves available and stats slightly.
Or alternatively having Field Phase be Speed, Duel Phase be Defense, and Burst Mode be Attack, leaving him to be Normal mode only in Round animations.

my roughest match right now is machamp because he just kills me in two combos or grabs and I don't like getting close to him for fear of getting countered so I have to lame him out and harrass him with icicle crashes and the occasional divekick

if they start a round throwing out random projectiles (aka 99% of online chandy/garde/braixen players) then just run at them, jump, and hit aerial X to punish them for it and get into duel mode

protip: the slide in duel mode (down+x I think) goes under several projectiles, kinda nice to throw out sometimes

I mostly use icicle crash for oki on weavile. if they're hitting counter then it'll miss and I can either hit them or restart pressure with a divekick or jump Y

If you're on the ground you can go in with a Y string and cancel to Taunt if they wake up with counter. It'll beat most counters unless they full charge it.

So I just found a way to beat 99% of people online as Sceptile.

Field:

Use jumping A (the two seeds), and occasionally side Y (the one seed). Use up Y (the blade) when they get close; that move also sends you into dual mode every time.

Dual:

Use the two seeds again to trap them, and down A as well. Use forward A when they get close/knocked down from the seeds. Forward A also usually leaves them a good distance to use another down A. Your synergy will charge very fast; use it. I like Cresselia as support.

I've won literally 20 matches in a row with this and I'm a shitter. My WR previously was 34%.

Are non-combo extender supports ever worth it?

Really dislike synergy mode. There's almost no risk to throwing your super out at random and even when it does get blocked you're superarmored so you still have an edge over the opponent after a colossal fuck up.

Using super should immediately drain your synergy bar, I think. If they're going to have supers be safe on block they should make it a bigger waste of resources to just throwing it out.
