Be warned though that game WILL let you plant the tree right next to another obstacle, like barn, condemning it to be stunted as long as the barn stands.

If you're too lazy to gather Winter Seeds to do the crop rot trick then going Hoe/Watering Can first is great.
Bombs take over the job of both pickaxe and axe anyway unless you're trying to control the destruction but even then gold is enough for both and iridium is just added convenience.

If you don't use the watering can, do it last since you don't need it. If you do use it, wait for winter. Otherwise, you should go Pickaxe-Hoe-Axe. Upgrading the pickaxe makes it much easier to break down rocks, especially in the skull mine. And a fully upgraded hoe just goes so much faster.

The axe barely needs an upgrade. There's nothing that the iridium axe can cut down which the gold axe can't also cut down. It does go faster, but by the time you get it you don't really need wood or hardwood either.

Some of the festivals could use some help. Basically, any festival where there's nothing to do but talk to people and watch a cutscene could use an improvement.

The combat is fine though. Yes, it's kind of clunky, but it's meant to be a farming game first and foremost.

Finally, it would be nice if the town evolved. If the inhabitants grew older, the kids grew into adults, etc. It would of course give the game a finite lifespan, as your character would eventually grow old and die, but you could easily just allow people to pick between that and an "endless" mode where shit stops changing after the second year.
