Crops die off when the seasons change except for corn (which tells you this on the seed pack tooltip)

Coal can be found while mining or from geodes at a certain point there are monsters which drop coal alot.

When you upgrade tools you lose them for two days, also you can't buy anything from blacksmith or get him to open geodes (I learnt my lesson with the later)

Seeds are marked with what season they're for. You get many warnings through letters and conversations about how crops die on the 1rst of the season. There's in game tutorial books at the library in town and there's a tv that shows tutorial messages every once in a while, use tv every morning. You find more tutorial books by digging up little wiggling worms with a hoe on maps that's not your farm. Like leave towards town and if you see little worms on the ground dig them up with the hoe and you'll find something, treasure or book.

Parsnips and potatoes, cauliflower is higher profit but takes longer to grow and you want the XP harvesting gives, you should plant a variety but there are definite money crops. 2k gold for the egg festival and buy strawberry seeds. Blueberry is the money crop of summer and cranberries are for fall.

Parsnips are a great friendship gift food, grow a lot of them. Use fertilizer, tree sap can be gotten from chopping down trees and sap can be turned into fertilizer if you levelled up in farming (see parsnips and potatoes). Don't setup too big a field. You'll want to plant at least 5 of each crop for quests and cooking.

You can make coal in a wood burner, buy it from the blacksmith, randomly find it in those worm things, or mine rocks and find it there randomly.

If you give your tool to blacksmith, he keeps it for the rest of the day, the entire next day and then until you talk to him again.

Upgrade your water can whenever tv weatherman says rain tomorrow or the 27th of the month AFTER you've watered your plants.

Oh, I usually reach level 6 by summer with a heavy parsnip and potato strategy in spring with 20-30 strawberry plants and 5 of each other crop, plus 10 or so cauliflowers on fertilized ground for 1 gold cauliflower the luau.

8xp per harvest, so quick growing foods give more xp per tilled&watered ground square. Plus you re-invest the money back into seeds faster.

Yep. I set up a field of 30 parsnips and that has 5 harvests by the end of spring. 150 parsnips for 8xp is 1200 xp, which by itself will push my farmer to level 3 by the end of spring.

Then there's the potatoes and strawberries which easily push me into 4 or 5.

But for the 5 gold parsnips, my 3rd parsnip planting is entirely done on fertilized ground because I chopped down at least 10 trees and collected their sap to make fertilizer.

I've re-done the first year 3 times now and I've gotten to the point where I've gotten the greenhouse twice by mid fall.

They will continue to decline at a steady -2pt per day, unless you talk to them. Each day you talk to them, they gain +20. So if you make the slightest effort(for me, on days I'm gifting people, I make a round-trip to talk to everyone I'm invested in), they'll never decline.
