More JVN companies are beginning to release their games in the West before in Japan. How will EVNs compete?
>>
>>135616047
By catering to furries and feet fags
>>
>>135616047
Evns are comparable to Japanese doujins, so a major dev like FrontWing isn't a good comparison.
>>
>>135616286
I'm not comparing them. I'm saying games that are better than them are starting to come out in the West even before Japanese release.
>>
>>135616402
They'll like be 3-4x the cost as well. Steamfags are cheapskates, so $5-$10 evn still stand a good chance.
>>
>>135616730
Or they'll buy one expensive VN and have no money left over for cheap, less polished ones. Whatever helps you sleep at night.
>>
>>135616819
Anything over $20 has repeatedly been said to be too expensive for a vn on Steam.
>>
>>135617349
Any VN has repeatedly been said to not be a game and not worth buying period, too.
>>
>>135617562
Steamfags are cheapskates. Unless it's a kamige like Clannad, it'll be lucky to see a few thousand copies. More than likely Steam will see a rush of short Nekopara clones hoping to cash in.

And one's a tsundere, while the other is your classic modest waifu.

Completely new to making VNs. I'm thinking about starting with Ren'Py, but I want to make use of many animated scenes, and use constantly animated character sprites during dialogue. For instance the character will have a breathing animation or waving hair. I'm interested in learning simple scripting if possible to extend my game further, so having a little flexibility is necessary. Does Ren'Py do those things well? Most of the Ren'Py games I've seen just have simple static sprites, and I'm having trouble finding information that isn't very dated.
>>
>>135622231
But what does that have to do with the newly announced VN?
>>
>>135622802
Frontwing likely made their new vn to pander to weebs. This is supported by the teaser looking like a Nekopara ripoff.
>>
>>135622802
They're probably assuming the plot line will be similar. Tokyo School Life, the failed KS campaign by that one company reusing their assets, and Sekai's recently announced High School Life with Japanese Schoolgirls are all attempting to copy it.

Thanks, looks like it's back to good ol Unity for me then. I was kind of hoping I could find something like Ren'Py that supports something like Live2D, spine, or AE, but it looks like most options are not designed around that kind of thing. It would be nice to have a proven visual novel type engine to work off of so I could work more on the story and art instead of spending so much time programming. Unity has some interesting assets, Fungus and Jokerscript(Japanese language only), does anyone here have any experience with these?

>>
>>135684335
Glitchy when playing games made with it and it has very limited customization options.

http://store.steampowered.com/app/345370/#app_reviews_hash
>>
>>135684335
The longer the game, the more likely the glitches are to appear. It doesn't do well when the game has alot of choices either. If your game is free and very simple, then it's okay to use for that.
>>
>>135684335
In general, visual "No Code!" systems are easy to get started but difficult for longer projects because everything is always the same amount of effort.

When you're doing proper code, once you get past the initial hump things tend to be smooth sailing until and unless you hit something really tricky you need to do. The functions are already defined, you can just call them, you can just copy-and-paste the line that does the thing. Once you understand it, typing "show eileen at right" takes only seconds.

If, instead, every time you want to do a thing, you first have to open up a window, scroll through a list of graphically-represented options, find the right icon, drag it into your code, click on it to customise the options, and set the correct options... done over and over, this becomes exhausting.

Sure, it was helpful hand-holding when you were trying to figure out for the very first time how to make a character appear on screen, but it's annoying to do it all the time.

(The above is not necessarily how TB works, I'm comparing other visual game tools I've used.)

As for the bugginess, try playing the games in the TyranoBuilder game jam.
>>
>>135683976
Oh! In that case, as-salamu alaykum.
>>
>>135685281
>As for the bugginess, try playing the games in the TyranoBuilder game jam.

I downloaded a game, but it was made more than half a year ago and there have been a few updates since then, so I don't know if many issues were fixed since then. It had falling snow particles for no reason throughout the entire playthrough, when the particles landed on the bottom of the screen the window would get a little temporary scroll thing on the side which would go away when no snow was hitting the bottom of the window. Then when I tried to maximize the game it clipped to the top left corner of my screen, but the window was the exact same size as it was before, leaving most of my screen still visible. I was just hoping it was a fluke.

It seems like the creator is always posting updates, but is there really no hope for it? I really don't like all text systems. I like to have a nice GUI where I can organize my folders and mess with certain things while still retaining the ability to script when I need to. Something like GMS for VNs would be perfect. Where you have the visual element to the engine, but you can do everything with code if you like. Unity as well. I just don't want to use Unity because I don't know C# and don't really want to learn it, and I don't really want to use Ren'Py because it feels so outdated in many ways. Not having things like Live2D support is a killer, and we don't actually know if Tom will ever be able to add it. I saw his posts, but he seemed up in the air.

It's too bad there can't just be one perfect solution. I guess Ren'Py is my only real option at this point, but I really don't want to be stuck with no Live2D or Spine support and I'd have to learn python which I know nothing about.
>>
>>135686369
Oh, and another bug with that game. Whenever I hit the spacebar, the window would scroll downwards into blackness, and then slowly rise up again over time. Really disappointing to see that stuff in an otherwise nice looking program.
>>
>>135685327
Wa-Alaikum-us-Salaam
>>
>>135686369
>and I'd have to learn python which I know nothing about.
Do you know bog standard basic programming, like setting variables and checking if/else logic? That's pretty much all you need for most RenPy games.
>>
>>135689789
I know a bit about programming in general, but not much. The problem is that while I'm making a VN, I'd like to have intractable elements like a shop, and a simple inventory. Nothing fancy or crazy, just simple items that do simple things to the character like change the sprite's clothes or hair. I'm completely terrified of learning programming to tell the truth, so I'm always trying to find solutions that don't involve any, but I think I finally hit a wall. I think Ren'Py is still my best bet. I'll just have to hold out hope that someday it will have Live2D support so I can use my characters easily. I don't even have a clue how hard it would be to code something like the thing I said above. Not even sure if I'd be able to accomplish it at all.
>>
>>135692263
Those sound like pretty simple things (to someone with a little coding experience, unfortunately trying to explain how to get to that point can be hard). There definitely have been RenPy projects done with character customisation (colors, clothes, etc) but I'm not sure if there are tutorials or code samples for it.

Depending on your project you might be able to get someone to help out with the side bits if you're really stuck on them.

I see, thanks. I don't mind looking things up. What makes Ren'Py so awesome is there are so many awesome examples of nearly everything you'd need. >>
>>135726363
>What about when a project dies and people are mad that they aren't getting it?
I don't think I've ever yet had to dump a project that was far enough along for people to care and complain. I hate seeing things go to waste, I'd be inclined to try and release what existed and let the fans finish it themselves.
>>
>>135724852
I feel like I am perpetually in this situation.
I finish writing a script, but the artists and musicians haven't finished, so I get bored and start writing something else while I wait - and so I end up with a lot of finished scripts just floating around.
So it's like I'm always working on about 4 things at once, but not really, because I've pretty much finished my job and all I can do is wait...

But it's not like the other people I work with are slow, I think the problem is I write too quickly.

Maybe try working on some text-only projects on the side, both to keep you from being frustrated and to practice different styles of writing?

Whether it's a straight book / short story or some sort of twine/choicescript thing, it might be valuable perspective.

For all of you Ren'Py users, do you have your entire game script inside of the script.rpy? If not, what is a good way to set up and organize scripts? I haven't done much with my script so far, but it's already starting to feel a bit cluttered.

Are VNs the easiest genre of video games to make?
>>
>>135745078
No, it's platformers
>>
>>135745078
no. vn are not games.
>>
>>135745825
Then why are we talking about them on a video game board?
>>
>>135745078
Coming from other types of games to visual novels, they can be very easy, but it really depends on which tools you have to utilize, and what you do with those tools. Traditional games like platformers can be made very easily in game engines like Construct, Fusion, or even Game Maker Studio's drag and drop feature. Alternatively, you can make a complicated game completely through code using Game Maker Studio, or even code your own engine from scratch. It really depends on the scope and complexity of the game in question. I just got into VNs, but I've seen some very complex ones, and I wasn't even aware that things like that existed. I just thought all VNs were nothing but branching dialogue with pretty pictures. I guess it also depends on what you consider to be easy. Do you find artwork to be easy? Do you think coding is easy? Do you enjoy writing? All these different factors play into it. For example, if you enjoy art and writing, you will probably have a much easier time creating a visual novel than someone who doesn't write or draw, but loves to code physics and such. That said, making a Visual Novel might be the easiest thing to get into outside of some of the drag and drop systems, but it really depends on the scale and complexity.

>>
>>135745825
I don't really consider visual novels as games either - but I don't care why everybody cares about classifications so much. Who cares if they're games or not? Well, I know some people obviously do care, but however you choose to label something doesn't change what it fundamentally is - VNs won't suddenly gain more/less worth if everyone unanimously decides 'yes they are/no they're not games'.
>>
>>135728979
I try to practice different styles of writing with each VN I write (not all the time, but sometimes), but this makes me worry it'll alienate potential audiences... If I try doing different writing styles with each project, it might mean somebody who liked the writing style in one of my VNs would hate the writing style in another, so it might put them off trying my other stuff.

So maybe writing projects in a similar style would actually be a better way to establish a fanbase... But that's really boring...
>>

>>
>>135756105

Some people just don't like visual novels. Some people hate the idea of having to read through so much text. Just like plenty of people have grown tired of RPGmaker rpgs and generic looking pixel platformers. Fun games get passed up all the time because of the stigmas attached to the genre or style in which they belong. As far as VNs go, I just think they have a much smaller potential audience. At least in the west. I mean they're highly subjective. Style and subject preferences vary from person to person. You can have a generic pixel platformer, but if it plays and looks good, people who love platformers will enjoy it. With a visual novel, you're relying on people being into whatever message you're trying to convey through the character dialogue and game art. People playing a platformer will make exceptions if they don't like the characters, the story, or even the art because they like playing platformers, they like the challenge, gameplay or both. I would assume not many people would play a VN simply to click through a bunch of text they aren't interested in or look at art that isn't appealing to them.

But what's the point if you pay all of it in advance?
>>
>>135757369
But according to Reborn, Faye's not with any of them. And in Fates, Faye and Yoi are both romantic interests for Name, while Kika is one for Natalie. The canon end of Hope most likely ends with Faye being single.

I wonder what triggered the sudden influx of criticism of JP's We Know the Devil review. It was made back in October and the game came out on Steam a month ago.
>>
>>135770782
Yuri fans include:
men who think two chicks making out is hot (especially if they will then make out with him)
self-hating men who think maleness is impure and worship girl-only relationships
bisexual sluts who think it's awesome to get the chance to date girls as well as guys
bitter SJWs who feel oppressed by a history of bad lesbian stories and therefore go batshit at the slightest provocation

Those are just some of the most obvious groups, and that should explain why /u/ sometimes turns into a bloodbath.

Is that actually a controversy? It just sounds like people keep asking them about it.

It's a reasonable thing to wonder, if you suddenly see two really similar games at the same time. It's usually a coincidence, though.

As I recall from looking at the samples of the JVN one, the character archetypes are pretty different. I think. Haven't played either (didn't bother Sekai about demoing HB for me because why would they want to do that, I'm not press)

It's hard to tell from the video, but it looks like some monster girl types are overused. They could've just stole ideas from Monster Monpiece if they couldn't think of anything else.

I'm actually thinking of picking this up, even though I didn't really care for WC's previous games. They've had this one in development much longer than the others, and it reminds me of Demon Master Chris.

>Sakura Dungeon will be heading to PC in Spring 2016.

>Sakura Dungeon is packed with extensive dialogue and CG content. It might not be for everyone, but if you’re a fan of monster girls, fantasy stories, and dungeon crawling then you might want to keep an eye out for this RPG.

>You play as a fox spirit who has awoken after a long rest to find that her dungeon has been taken from her. She also has lost all her powers which means she must regain her strength and rebuild her army.

>The game allows you to capture enemies you encounter in the dungeon. If successfully caught, they will return back to your base but will apparently need further convincing.

Sounds like yuri.

>>
>>135783104
>I'd love to hear the highlights. Do you really think yuri caters specifically to men?
Not necessarily, but the fanbase is made of men obsessed with the concept of purity. I am not saying there aren't girls who aren't into the concept too, or that bona fide lesbians are fine with waifus who had dicks inside them either (although it is something hard to avoid in IRL lesbian dating), but much like lesbian porn, you get a lot of guys who are way too into the forbidden love, too pure for this world thing and get extremely vocal when anything strays from that path.

To me, it's very much like gentrification. Guys who aren't out of the trans closet yet just kinda took over something originally targeted to women.
>>
>>135787150

I strongly disagree with the poster claiming that the fanbase is "made up" of these people because they're a small faction. However, these people definitely exist.

Hang out on /lgbt/ and you'll run into guys who are questioning whether they should get on hormones because they hate themselves and think women are better, NOT because they believe they are already women.

It's not a large proportion of either yuri fans or MtFs, but it does exist.
>>
>>135788589
It's exactly what >>135788662

>>
>>135788973
May be why MtF's outnumber FtM's by such a large degree
>>
>>135789413
Are we actually sure they do? FtMs are much harder to notice if they don't go out of their way to announce themselves.

I mean I'm not saying you're wrong, I just don't know if there's real data.

... Although this is getting off topic. Sorry. Back to yuri.

What I've learned so far in terms of things that set /u/ off is that they are extremely sensitive to disappointment when it comes to surprise male rivals. If the game sets them up to think they get to date girl X and actually girl X likes dick, they have hissy fits. What this boils down to, I think, is that there's not enough yuri to go around so if they've psyched themselves up to be invested in dating this girl they thought they were promised a shot at, they rage.

They're much more likely to be okay with a bitch ex-girlfriend who dumps you for a man at the beginning of the game if they were warned that in the advertising. Or with competing with a man for the affections of a girl if, again, they knew it was coming, and they have a chance of success.

The standards for most EVNs has no correlation to what is good and what is bad. Just because other developers use shit art doesn't mean you get a free pass for using shit art.

I often wonder this, but why would you ever go to Sekai? They don't fund their projects, they barely promote their non-Alienworks EVNs, and after they come out they leave them on the catalog and never promote them again. Look at that Rising Angels game. He banked on them to do the promotion like a publisher is supposed to do and all they did was a retweet. Not even an original tweet, a retweet!

Why would you ever give them a cut of your profits and possession of your IP?

People are clueless and scared, is the only thing I can think of.

They supposedly do fund a few people or at least help them kickstart, and they can manage the "getting your game on Steam" thing that some people are scared of, but in general you could do all that yourself and get much better results.

The Rising Angels launch looks dead in the water so far, poor guy. Have they even given him any suggestions of what to do? Have they made any attempt to use the obvious avenue of...

wait, I'm not his publisher, should I be giving him this advice?

... oh, for fuck's sake. USE THE ANNOUNCEMENT FEATURE ON YOUR EXISTING FREE GAME!

>>135848640
On Steam, as the dev, you can make announcements about the game (like, if you released a patch or something), or about your company in general - like, if you released a new game.
It's not hard to do, it takes literally 5 seconds.
>>
>>135849507
oh alright, thanks for the explanation (and yeah it's pretty weird RA guy didn't do that)
>>
>>135850465
There's more detailed things you can do to draw attention to that announcement as well. Again, if someone's helping you with the Steam stuff, they should tell you these tricks, since you desperately want to get off to a strong launch, especially right before the weekend, so you can benefit from frontpage exposure.
>>
>>135849507
>>135848640
The problem with blogging on your Steam account is that only people subscribed or who bother to check your page will know whereas with SP twitter will reach a broader audience.

It's obvious which method is more effective if you're a first time indie dev with little to no audience. The question is whether it will be worth the cut in profits.
>>
>>135850957
>blogging on your Steam account
That is absolutely not what is being discussed, do you know anything about how Steam's tools work?
>>
>>135850957
Yeah I think with Sekai their biggest asset is that they have a lot of followers and a reasonably big fanbase (though I imagine lots of these people just want JVN, but even so...), so even if they don't do too much marketing they can still give you more exposure than you'd get on your own.
>>
>>135851223
You're discussing using announcements, right?
You do realize they only appear for people who bother checking the page in the first place or those who are subscribed, right?

Do you know anything about how Steam works?
>>
>>135846312

>>

>>
>>135851334
>You do realize they only appear for people who bother checking the page in the first place or those who are subscribed, right?

... and on Steam's front page if you promote it, and on the game's entry in the library of the 100K people who have it installed, which you can draw attention to with another little trick.

Even if you discount all of that, it's ridiculous not to bother taking those extra seconds to post an announcement and point anyone who happens to drop by the page in the direction of your new game.
>>
>>135784479
Sorry, been busy so I didn't catch this, but sure.

Love, Guitars, and Nashville Sky came out a little before Highway Blossoms kicked into gear. However, since it wasn't really a major release, it fell under our radar, as most Japanese doujin games do. It wasn't until around the time Sekai picked up ATOM GRRRL that we heard about it, and by then HB was already well into production.

So ultimately, there isn't really a controversy, just two yuri roadtrip games that exist. No one is mad, and all parties are happy the other exists.
>>
>>135851984
>... and on Steam's front page if you promote it,
Goodluck with that kek

>and on the game's entry in the library of the 100K people
>100K
Exceptionally generous and like I said, if they bother looking.

Listen, I agree that most people vastly underutilized what they have with Greenlight and Steam, but you're sorely delusional if you think these methods are better than a Tweet from SK that reaches hundreds of thousands of people if you're a first time indie.
>>
>>135851984
This is why he openly admits he is terrible at promotion and depends on others once it leaves his development hands. He depends on Sekai, where as he should be hiring a PR person instead with whatever they are getting out of this.
>>
>>135852414
>Goodluck with that kek
You literally don't know how steam's partner tools work.

>Exceptionally generous
I'm actually listing well under what steamspy reports.

Also, I never said all of these methods were better than a tweet from Sekai. I said that Sekai ought to be doing incredibly simple things that would BOOST the effectiveness of their single tweet.

The dev has said in a tweet a while back that the game had over 200k+ downloads across all platforms. I also wouldn't consider someone doing this as long as he has to be a first time indie. Idiot indie, to be sure, but not first time.

It's not really about whether you hate him or not, it's that the EVN scene is small and any "recognizable figures" we have aren't that far removed from being average EVN developers. It's not like making a dumb edit of Zoey Quinn or whoever and giggling about it. The smaller a community is, the easier it is to bruise someone's ego. Plus, there's a difference between criticizing someone and insulting them, even if that wasn't your intention.
>>

I don't think Raithfyre would be crushed by that particular edit, he's been around the block a few times, but it's still not a good direction to head down.

Ok, I finished all the endings and after all my project isn't similar enough to be called a rip-off, wew. Also it was p. good except perhaps for the last act where things got a bit hectic and felt more like a detailed outline than a completed project. Can't believe I'm saying this, but it could have used more low-key expositional scenes (but since it's more of an adventure game than a VN, you could argue that the room exploration parts were substitutes for those, maybe).
Oh and why on earth does it take up 500mb of space, there are probably quite a few wrongly compressed image files there. Also could use more polish especially with transitions.

It's not that bad really. When you're in the middle of a riveting story you tend to notice subtle wonkiness in graphics much less than when you're critiquing it on an imageboard. Umineko, Higurashi, Touhou, etc all have much worse art. I think what's bad is when people blatantly copy art from actual artists or paint over it, like I recently saw on Lemmasoft forums. Some guy had a bad copy over of a tracer image and a bad copy of a Norasuko image on his thread. Two completely different art styles, and two very distinct ones, which were much too complex for an artist making that caliber of lines and shading. It's super obvious to an actual artist. That art you called bad is at least original art, and it conveys what it means to properly. That price is insane for that much work, and I'd assume the artist will burn out if they keep doing it, but who knows. I say take it if you need art on a budget.

I don't want to call anyone out. It's clear that the person who did it spent some time making it look presentable. It was just obvious to me right away where they got the images from, whether they're exact traces or not, I don't know, but probably not. I can look at art all day and not find anything that looks copied, but that stood out to me right away. Then again I also follow Overwatch art and I've been a fan of Norasuko for a while. Shaming isn't my style, and if no one else noticed it, then it's probably fine.
