I am indeed doing it as I go, however that's just for dialogue. Enemies, items, areas and abilities have mostly been translated.

Not the most efficient way, but I've already done too much to deviate from that methodology.

For something like Devil Children Black Book though, which I've picked up, I've already dumped its whole script in Japanese and have been slowly translating it day by day. Planning to inject that shit into the rom once I've turned it all into English (using a program I wrote).

Text hacking is hex editing, generally. In it's most basic form at least.

Make a table and it becomes easy.

Compression is when it gets harder, and you don't always need ASM for that, but sometimes I guess you do (I believe when it comes to SNES rpgs as well). I can't really think of a game that requires ASM knowledge to crack text, except DDS2. Maybe Dragon Warrior?

Just hitting the Yamato reactor with only Burroughs (forced) on your side makes that fight pretty emotional though.
I admit that it's strange that nobody from Law, Neutral or Chaos tried to stop you but the presentation of the ending had a lot of impact this way in my opinion, it would be just another ending if it had a normal boss fight. Also I didn't think we were talking about the gameplay perspective because then Neutral would obviously be the best executed one even though it's pretty lacking storywise.

I thought Law and Chaos fit their alignments pretty well in IV. The problem with Neutral was that it didn't need anything more ideas but they shoved a bunch of bullshit in with that Goddess of Tokyo. To those who have played MegaTen games in Japanese, how far along were you when you did and how well did you understand them? I've been seriously studying for about half a year and I'm able to get through some simpler things with a dictionary. I've been wanting to play Persona 2 but I'm not sure if I'm ready for it yet since I'm assuming it'll get philosophical and metaphysical or whatever. On the other hand, I imagine the modern setting might be easier to handle than some medieval or sci-fi setting. My main worry is missing important plot points because of my lack of understanding or having to stop to look up words so much that a scene loses its momentum.

Man all these alignment bugs in SMT1 are killing me. I just went up 8 floors in the cathedral only to find my alignment had shifted from neutral to chaos somewhere along the way (even though it's not supposed to be able to change after the lock) and couldn't get through the door cause chaos hero was blocking the way, then I tried going back to the bottom and couldn't enter the heart of the cathedral anymore.

I had to reload my game and climb all the way back up, only this time running from every encounter except for the bosses, at least it worked and I was able to proceed with the neutral path. I'll probably have to do the same thing on the way down to Asura.

Someone save me from this hell.

Yeah I tend to do that against enemies that I know can inflict annoying status ailments or reflect physical attacks. I nearly wiped my entire party when a demon repelled the Hinokagutsuchi back at me

After googling around I found some people had the same problem I had, with their alignment changing after the lock and causing inconsistencies with the story, I wouldn't mind as much only I wanna jump straight into SMTII after this, so I'm determined to end up neutral.

Something just occurred to me. When we first saw the peace and anarchy logos for final we assumed that they corresponded to law and chaos somewhat, before finding out they were bot presented as neutralish. But in retrospect don't you think its more the other way around? Anarchy is more like law since you commit genocide based on saying that its necessary for the future of the world as a whole to be more ordered and work better.
